I've grown really fond of the 111mm's over the last few years. They are too big for me to carry in pocket, but they work great in a day bag or around the house!
I especially like the linerlocks, they are just more robust than the slidelocks, especially in an outdoors role. I still chuckle at the look of that anemic flat driver on the massive Workcamp slidelock...
I have five 111mm's:
- Workchamp (my only slidelock) - general duty and travel companion
- Forester - in my motorcycle hydration bag
- Soldier 08 - in a survival type bag in my car
- Skipper - lives in the kitchen drawer
- Outrider - in my grab bag for day excursions

I will leave you with a few pictures I've taken over the years:
Workcamp:

Small pliers are useful to handle hot items:

But lives permanently in my car's survival bag:

The Forester:

A long time ago I still had plans to carry it as an EDC using this belt clip. Cool idea, but... nope. Alox Cadet rules the pocket.

Now it's part of my motorcycle kit, and lives in my hydration pack. Spot the SAK... :D:

The Skipper:
I saw a great YouTube clip about the usefulness of the marlin spike, and thought it was a good enough reason to buy a Skipper. I also like the serrated main blade and philips.

It now serves duty in the kitchen drawer, for popping beer caps, pulling wine corks, opening cans, and as a quick access philips & flat driver around the house. The pliers have come in handy once or twice. I've yet to use the marlin spike...

(The Wenger SI was my EDC for years, but has retired gracefully and is now our dedicated egg shell piercer for boiled eggs, if you have to know :D)
The Outrider:
New kid on the block...

(https://i.postimg.cc/4xDHJLRQ/DSC-0704.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/NKxjDxMK)
It will live in my Fatboy, mainly used for day excursions with the family, picnics on the beach, BBQ, and short walks.

You know you have a problem when you have to stash SAKs everywhere around the house and car!
The 111mm's might be too big as EDC for most folks (including me), but they offer great utility and robustness if you toss them in a bag and drag them along for an adventure.
I really dig them!
-
I agree! I've always thought of them as 21st Century SAKs.
-
It's truly a nice robust size, I only have an oho trekker that I tried to edc but it was to big and I figured that it is going to be hard to explain if I ever got stopped by the men/women in blue. In my ordinary life a smaller SAK does the trick so it lives in my outdoor pants for hiking, kayaking and other outdoor adventures
[It's not failure if you learn something from it]

Thanks everybody...
I think the long saw is one of the 111mm’s greatest assets. It’s a good tool to prep kindling with, and allows you to notch bigger branches to break easily into smaller pieces. Not to mention it’s also a good firesteel scraper. In general it saves a lot of wear on the blade.
Has anyone yet worn out a saw, or had to sharpen it? Mine has seen lots of use and is still sharp.
-
I think the metal file/saw can wear with some use - Not heard or seen the same of the wood saw

Great post Brock O Lee :tu:
I had the same thoughts once about the Skipper.
But couldn't justify the cost to my curiosity :D
I love my Outrider.

The marlin spike is a specialized tool, but it has the potential for creative uses. I found that YouTube clip I referred to earlier:
https://youtu.be/O-2Z2YJGcDg (https://youtu.be/O-2Z2YJGcDg)
Even if you ignore the marlin spike completely the Skipper has a lot going for it.
I bought it with the idea to use as a general purpose kitchen drawer tool, and it does well in that role.
Yes I am at that stage where I have to invent a niche for every new knife, and the blue was so pretty...

It's one reason why I decided on a Trailmaster over a Farmer. In my work I consider a pocket saw of some kind essential carry. The 111mm saw cuts faster than any shorter SAK saw. If you have a model with THO, it's also more comfortable to hold.

It’s exactly for this reason I like the two hand open 111mm’s.
I prefer my Spyderco’s to be OHO though...
