Next time out, while walking the dog, my kid and I picked up some supplies. A random wind fallen branch.

Round one was in the back yard. Talk about a learning curve. And a mission.

My knee, arm and wrist were hurting. My fingers were yellow from the smoke. Wtf.

I broke the paracord but had enough on one side to retie it.

Went through half the spindle and five holes to get the first ember.

I felt beaten. I had enjoyed working on the parts but using them was not fun. I needed to reflect on the process.

Round two was in the pine forest. It was a warm day. Clock was ticking.

Found a nice soft bit of dirt for my sore knee.

I paced it out better. Still managed to break the paracord again. And wear through another spindle.

However this time it was three holes to get the ember.

I put the fire out and headed back home.

:salute: The prep is enjoyable but only getting smoke is confusing for me.  I'm glad you were able to get an ember.  I'll have to source some wood soon to have a go.

After round two happened I became aware there would be a US$1000 fine for anyone caught lighting fires around here.

So I would have to be careful.

Following a couple days of gale force winds the rain came down heavy.

Perfect.

I was ready and there would be a couple hour window before the winds kicked back in.

Round three was in the creek bed. Away from the beaten track. And near water.

I cut a new spindle on the way in.

Picked some punk wood and cleaver plant off a nearby willow.

Put a new piece of paracord on the bow.

Burn in was kept short. Stopped as soon as I had some smoke and quickly cut the notch. Ember on the first hole, smurf yeah.

Right after this pic I put the flames out. I didn't want the fine. The restriction will be lifted soon enough.

I look forward to trying out different types of wood combinations.

Might even attempt some other friction fire making techniques.

If you are getting smoke, keep going, the flames aren't too far away.

Definitely, the pause was supposed to be for information gathering.......finding the right local wood(s) to use.
