One of the things I have been working on for a while is coming up with a way to properly do a video review format that would stand out among the millions of other, not so well done reviews, and I have come up with this- the Multitool.org Multitool Minute. These are short reviews, not terribly in depth, but enough to give the average person an idea of what to expect with each tool. I have three already up, with many more to come. I hope you like them.

Be gentle- I know I have a face for radio and a voice for email, but I'm hoping to get a bit better as I go along! :D

I like the format. Its exactly the kind of video Im looking for when I wonder how big a tool is etc.
I noticed there is no MTO link in the bio below the video. Maybe there should be?
Also, it sounds like multitool.org got bleeped out of the SOG video. (?)

Quick, neat and most importantly informative! Great job Boss :salute:

I like it!
I know from bitter experience that shorter = better when it comes to Youtube reviews. I'd expect these to do really well :tu:
Nice job.

The bleep was a camera malfunction, but if you see how many takes I had to do just to get that one, you will understand why I said smurf it, and went with it anyway! :P

With respect Grant, you don't look too enthralled to be doing the vids. Selfie stick and looking at the screen instead of the camera doesn't help either. As dks says, either ditch the intro or looking cheerfully into the camera NOT the screen... of a fixed camera would make a huge difference IMHO.
As to the main vid section, you're trying to focus on both the dialogue and action at the same time, and condense all the necessary info into a one minute slot. That's makes it too easy to fluff the lines or fumble the tool. I would consider scripting a one minute monologue, and record that track seperately as the template, and edit the visuals in to suit. They can be desktop visuals or "working" visuals.
I know these comments seem harsh, but I genuinely don't mean them to be. The concept is excellent, and I think the tweaks to presentation would add the necessary polish, and make it MUCH easier to produce to the standard you're looking for. (easier to fix the booboos cos you're only focussing on one thing at a time)
-
Harsh? You didn't call me ugly and unattractive like DKS did.
I agree. I plan to make the intros a bit less like the Spanish Inquisition in the future, and sadly, there is no selfie stick involved. That's me just hsing the camera.
Def

I absolutely love the idea. Good job!

You could have quickly mentioned in the switchplier review that blade and outer tools can be opened without switching it open. :)

Good concept, and a decent start to the series with some varied tools :tu:
I know this is sort of a quickie format of review, but I think you should have mentioned that the Trekker's bottle opener has a liner lock as well.
And I don't think the SwitchPlier2.0 actually has compound leverage. I think SOG's site claimed it did, but the "gears" sure seem to be purely decorative.
Also, you should change the thumbnail for the Skeletool video to show the tool and MTo plug like the others, and keep that going with future uploads.
I also had the thought while typing this up that you could probably draw in a somewhat bigger audience by showing some trendier MTs.
Do you have a LM Tread? I don't personally think much of it, but that's exactly the sort of thing that might draw in non-MT/knife people to watch and perhaps join MTo to get in on the hobby. And maybe some better entry level tools that more people can afford and carry- keychain tools like the Micra and Vic Classic immediately come to mind.
-
^ I think doing the "non trendy" multis especially is a good angle. You can find hundreds of videos already on YouTube for the wave or rebar, from in depth to quick walk throughs. This is more of a hardcore users site, which is good. So this makes sense.
If I could add one suggestion. The multitool.org watermark is a little on the distracting side and takes up too much screen. Either have it large in the intro and then go away, or smaller in a corner for the duration.
Looks good Grant. Def excited to see more. Especially that Gerber Center Drive! :salute: :tu:
-
Love the concept :salute:
As with all things refining as you go along will tidy these videos up. I like some videos where voice over done. This way there is no stumbling and all the bullet points are hit. I not so sure I like the banner superimposed  along the bottom. Is there a way to include MTO link within the video?
Over all I dig the approach especially when I tire about 3 mins into a MT review and the tool isn't even being shown at that point :twak:
-
The idea is brilliant
-
I loved the subtitles on the first video :tu:
Very good for people with hearing impairment :tu: but also for people who can't watch a video with the sound on ;) and also for foreigners -like me- who don't speak Canadian
-
I plan on doing all tools, not just the trendy or non trendy. I have a Tread coming, but I won't likely have it until next month- don't ask, it's a long story. :P
My hope is to add more tools fairly often- I am actually working with a 1 per day schedule in my head, but that may be a bit too ambitious. I have several reviews already recorded and I need to record the intros, which was on my schedule for yesterday, but that didn't happen. Hopefully today, and hopefully the intros get better. :D
I like the captions at the bottom, but unfortunately the software I am using (Windows Movie Maker) means I have to add it manually, I realise there is much better software out there to use, but until I get a new computer that isn't an option. I am not exaggerating when I say that this poor little combination tablet/netbook is already quite taxed just checking the forum, let alone editing videos! :ahhh
I'm still experimenting, so bear with me, and keep the suggestions coming!

The gears are not the feature that actually gives the compound force on any model though, I presume they are there to guide everything where it should go but there sure isn't much force on them (seeing how they are made of fairly thin sheet with rounded edges).

That is correct, most of the load is applied at the plier's pivots, and the compound leverage stems from those pivots being below the point where the handles meet.

Little bit behind on the "on video per day" idea I had above, but here is today's:

I guess technically this is only the third of the month, and I've already got four up, so maybe I'm actually still ahead a little bit! :P
I went back to adding subtitles, even though it takes a lot of time to do. Hopefully you all consider it worthwhile. Also, this one seems to have gotten cut off a bit at the end. Sorry about that.

I'm confused....aside from the uncomfortable G10 slabs....I don't think he hated the knife that much?....
I will say however, I was miffed at his disparaging of "plastic clips"
Aside from my general outrage at the use of the word "plastic".....
The design and locking mechanism on the belt clip for his sheath is damn near identical to that use by (probably a bunch of companies), but the one that sprang to mind was - http://www.blade-tech.com/.
With all the mount holes when he shows the sheath, I would imagine the carry height can be adjusted....
There's nothing wrong with polymer or composite products - We invented them for a reason.
I'm all for taking the piss out of survival knives, but make sure you attack the right things :P
Okay I'm done.
Oh, I should probably comment on Grant's one as well :P --
It "has a wire stripping tool" might be more accurate than "it functions as a wire stripped"
I've never had much success anyway :D

I saw the last MTO video. The new redneck style intro is better but it can still be improved or removed.
-
All I can say about this thread...is... :2tu:!
Short to the point video reviews can only help MT.O and the industry at large. I find most online reviews to be overly long...and I tend to switch off after 5 minutes viewing them.

Redneck?
Regular people don't drive cars?
Def
-
There was something about it that made me think of that. Maybe it was the showing of the knife whilst driving, maybe it was the introduction.
The first thing that came to my mind was of someone in the middle of nowhere who had just got a new knife, was very excited about it and had to show it immediately.
Maybe if the whole review was done in the car, or somewhere outside it would have a better flow, more connection with the 1st shot.
You are the pro :)
I know you have had that SAK for years.

Very few forums value honesty then I guess.... :P
I was actually driving out into a wooded area of a local park to film some other intros, which you will see shortly. I wanted to film them outside, in the woods as much as possible to show that I am not one of those reviewers that sits at a desk and tells you how wonderful they are and how well they believe a product will be based on their fondling of it in the living room.
I am not a hardcore bushcrafter, but I do spend a lot of time in the woods. I am not a tradesman, but I do a lot of work around a house. I am not a mechanic, but I tinker with things. I wanted the review portion to focus on the tool itself, so that's why I use the top of a desk as a background, but I also want people to realise that I actually use them before talking about them.
Overall these videos are meant for a less knowledgeable audience than the folks here. There is very little that I could say in less than a minute that would be news to anyone here. But, as you have all pointed out, no one wants to watch a 15 minute long video which mostly revolves around some guy trying to get the tool out of the box, and who has never actually used it for anything.

I learnt something new from that video-the existence of the Flux.

I'm glad you liked it. I am sure I will cover a few tools eventually that you (and others) haven't heard of. I have more than a few hidden gems in my collection, but the Flux holds a special place for me. It was released in 2010, but I first saw it in 2009 when I was sitting down and talking to CRKT designer Tom Stokes. He was showing me this new tool design that I wasn't allowed to talk about but I always love a sneak peak.
He was showing me the various components and I was pretty impressed by it, when he showed me the switchblade style USB drive holder and explained that it was his favourite component but he didn't like the limitations of putting in a custom flash drive, knowing how size limits change in the blink of an eye. He was strongly considering dropping it, until I happened. >:D
I pulled out my keys and the Micro SD card reader I carried on it.
He loved the idea so much that he thanked me by giving me a Fulcrum Flame (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=8712.0) which wasn't released yet. One year later when the Flex was released I was amused to see that the card reader on the Flux wasn't a custom designed one, but the exact one I had shown Tom! The Fulcrum Flame and the Flux will always have a special place in my collection for this.
There's actually another Multitool.org angle to this story- that card reader was actually one I had bought in Maine, during the Multitool.org Maine Meetup in 2008. I had brought my camera, but forgotten the memory card for it and had to stop into Radio Shack. I had bought the only SD card they had, an 8gb one since I had forgotten that my camera wouldn't read anything over 2gb.
I ended up going back in and buying a 2gb Micro SD card with an adaptor and the card reader.
Who would have thought that would have ended up influencing the development of the Flux? :D

The only issue with this format is that I don't have much of an opportunity to talk about the tool itself, how well ot works, what is good and what is bad, what I like and don't like etc. But i guess that's why we have more in depth reviews on the Main Site.

Would it be worth giving each vid it's own thread in the relevant sub-section of the forum, and putting a direct link to it on the YouTube page. That way there is the facility for discussion on each vid/tool, and it might be a nice "way in" for new members.
It might also be worth extending the closing frames with a standard "for more reviews, insights and discussion...." voiceover pasted on the end of each clip
-
Yeah, I have thought those would be a good ideas too and you will probably see them in future Multitool Minutes.

Getting better, boss!
:salute: :tu:
Try doing this: in the intro, when you finished presenting the theme of the review, pause for a little longer. When you edit the footage, you can cut it without having that awkward moment when you move to the camera to shut it off.
If you get a cone over the mic, pointing at you, you can muffle most of the surrounding noise (cheapper than getting a directional mic).

Nice! This is the sort of thing that the manufacturers ought to be putting on every product page. Sort of unfortunate that YouTube chose "and one of the more useless tools" for the thumbnail, ha. There's gotta be a way to change it, but I don't know diddly about YouTube content creation. Good stuff though!

thanks for pointing it out! I believe I have fixed it now. That comment was actually there when I was pointing out the folding lanyard ring, which strikes me as one of the most useless things ever developed.
Unless it functions as a portable hole in the old Bugs Bunny cartoons, it's a waste of space and metal.

Another one in the books  I also have a dislike for the lanyard ring as well  They use to put them on the outside leaving all the inside space for tools bow they just use it so they don't have to put as many I think  :D

SOG did the best for lanyard rings as far as I'm concerned. Look at the PowerLock:
You can see it tucked away on the bottom of the left handle in the above image. It can easily be removed, or as you can see above, tucked away. It can also be brought out and used if lanyard use is your thing. Just fire in a small split ring and you can tie or hook pretty well anything you like to it. It doesn't take up any interior space, it is as strong as any other component on the tool, it's easily added ot removed or tucked away.
SOG isn't usually the first manufacturer that comes to mind when you think slick or elegant, and even if it is, the PowerLock is generally not the first tool you think of in that category, but this is perhaps one of the finest solutions to lanyards that I have seen from any manufacturer.
That bit of sheet metal with a hole in it that comes on many Leathermans may not take up much space but it is also sharp enough to cut through any lanyard you might try to put in it, And, the thick ones you find on the older Gerber models was a complete waste of space.
I would rather have nothing than either of those types of lanyards.
I didn't mention it in the film becase of time issues, but one major problem I have with the Sidekick and Wingman is that idiotic decorative hole in the handle. When you pull out the tool, occupied by something else and try to open the knife blade by feel there is just as much chance that you will try to open the handle. I know, I have done it. You have the tool rotated 180 degrees in your hand and you try to open the blade and all you are doing is pushing against the handle. This is frsutrating, and a serious drawback to this tool. IMHO, it defeats the purpose of having a one handed opening blade on a tool.
Leatherman designers, if you are reading this, please redesign the fricking SideKick and Wingman to get rid of that idiotic, stupid, useless and misleading hole.

Here is a photo of the Wingman that shows the hole I am talking about.
See where the blade opening hole is on the top left, and the idiotic fake hole on the bottom right.
What the hell were they thinking when they designed that?

The old school lanyard rings are another thing LM should have brought back with some of the newer tools as well IMO :tu: Well an improved version anyways :D
-
Agreed. Leatherman used to have decent ones as well, as you can see in this old comparison photo of Bob's:
I still think SOG's were better because they were away from the plier pivot, which kept the lanyard out of the way of the pliers when you used it, and you could remove it easily or rotate it out of the way. But yes, the original Leatherman lanyard ring was indeed quite nice in it's own right.

It seems no one was willing to spend $65 on a tripod with a couple of not so great functions. It's not a super high quality tool, and the handles are all plastic, which is probably a good thing as the plier seems to have been stolen from a cheap dollar store multitool. :ahhh
But, it makes an excellent tabletop tripod....

Maybe a good plan for when I have a better computer and some decent software, but this is really the best that can be done with Windows Movie Maker. :ahhh
It's actually funny that you guys are posting other people's videos. I was curious about a tool and saw someone had posted a video so I decided to watch it.
Over six minutes long, and it was a minute and a half before the guy started talking about the tool! :ahhh
There may have been some useful info in it (not sure, there was a lot of pointless stuff to dig through to get the nuggets of usefulness), but I got bored after 5 minutes and shut it off.
Maybe the Multitool Minute should be the Multitool Two Minutes as I find them awfully short and I can't get as much info into them as I'd like, but it's a lot better than wasting six minutes of your life on pointless stuff andbeing late for work because the video put you to sleep!
Def
-
Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, the guy got it wrong too.
Def
-
I get to the point of not wasting my time on a lot of videos when I already know the person will talk for 5-10 mins even before showing the tool let alone talk about it. There is a balance of lack of info and over kill. I do enjoy comparisons to other tools so I can get an idea of size. I've seen some good videos where there is a ruler on the table as well. Give me the bullet points and stop in some personal info and I'm good to go.
-
Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, the guy got it wrong too.

I just posted the video to illustrate the specs list at the beginning. The rest of the video was very repetitititive...
Ok, it's about a nice knife but you could say everything about it in less than 1min.
-
How about making some in depth videos in addition to the minute ones for tools you feel like talking more about?
A "Multitool dual minute"
-

A "Multitool dual minute"
"Multitool.org Extended Minute"?...
Ok, we are going a little overboard here. Grant is just starting, we haven't even give him time to see what works and what doesn't. I think he might need to do a few more reviews and after that maybe experiment with some of our suggestions. If he finds that some radical changes are in order, he can redo some of the first ones later on.
Another idea to keep in the back burner: some tools have similar models (from the same or different brands). A face-off video of two of them at a time might be interesting. Being two tools, it could be a new 2min format: "Multitool.org Dual Minute" or something to that effect...

Maybe keep the "Multitool Minute" for the simpler end of the tool spectrum, and do "mini reviews" (at a similar speed) for the more heavily laden tools - same concept, just not time specific.

As i said, the Multitool Minute is just the first step. i plan on doing longer, more in depth reviews as well. They will still be concise though. I have no desire to subject anyone to eight to ten minutes of rambling and package opening.
To be honest, the MM videos aren't really designed with forum members in mind- the info is pretty basic for most members here. My hope is to interest other people and bring them here too, so they can learn the ways of the Plier People. :D

I prefer to read reviews with pics about tools or anything . I dislike audiobooks, podcasts and youtube reviews, perhaps because my worktool is talking and listening to people who talk all the time. However, I find review videos very useful, since they help me percept the way a tool is holded, how it opens or functions, its momentum and torques at hand, its noise (or music if you like) and similar characteristics.1 minute is usually enough for that, unless I need to see all blades of an XAVT opened and closed. I don't even need the talking, music neither, since they both cover the sounds of the tool. It is very rare to find a video review the way I need it to be.

Screen in screen?
A quarter screen (or larger) close up of each feature in use (not just in close up) while you describe them would resolve the tool (the quiet one :P) not being prominent enough

I like the relaxed way you talk about it and compare it to the skeletool and the freestyle. :tu:
I would have liked to see a couple of close up scenes of the tool though.
Also the way you highlighted the link to the store was great! :D

I like short clips with condensed information handled in a not too formal, ie laid back way, which happens to be exactly what you did  but I agree you might wish to pepper it with detail shots of the tool, either with brief close up shots whole screen, or longer in a picture-in-picture mode (possibly reversing contents once in a while if detail warrants, or as an attention grabber). Just my C$ 0.02 (just got some for the next trip :D).

Boss, if you're looking for affordable video editing software, you should take a look at Videopad (http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/index.html).
It's rather uncomplicated and affordable piece of software, might be useful for you

Some constructive criticism:
- I also think there should be more closeups of the tool. Each feature was only being shown for a second or two and by the time I focused on it you took it away again. :twak: I was trying to follow tools going back and forth and it was kinda like watching tennis.

I like the cut to the close-up for the bulk of the video. I would still prefer it even closer though and perhaps a surface that contrasts better with the tool (white perhaps?). Actually the first video in this thread was almost there in that respect.
Other than that, pretty good. :tu:

Much better. :like:
I like the cut to the close-up for the bulk of the video. I would still prefer it even closer though and perhaps a surface that contrasts better with the tool (white perhaps?). Actually the first video in this thread was almost there in that respect.
Other than that, pretty good. :tu:
I was trying to figure out what best to use to cover my desk, and I ended up using some carbon fiber cloth that I got for my kayak rudder project but haven't used yet. I figured folks would appreciate the coolness of a carbon fiber background!
And yeah, I need to get closer closeups like the old episodes. But, it's a work in progress, and I hope to keep making progress!
I am impressed that the lighting was decent though- I have two work lamps that I use for ambient light to keep from getting distracting shadows everywhere, but one of them blew it's bulb yesterday and so I had to film it with only one light.

:imws: plus the cut from detail to overview at the end lost some audio. Otherwise, apart from audio quality generally (muted, no treble) it's getting there :tu:
Yeah, audio issues are significant in these videos. This is partially due to equipment issues, software issues and my lack of skill.... it's nice to not be 100% to blame for once!

Sent you a PM with some comments on the video, boss.
:salute:
Great idea having these small pieces of visual info on the various tools. When looking for some data on them, most videos don't show them in action. Some are just someone going on and on about why they bought them and where and why it's such a good deal, while we just see a box and their hands moving around in the screen.
:tu:

My plan is to try and keep them short so that someone doesn't spend the rest of their lives listening to my uhms and uhhs, because I hate videos like that. I also think unboxing videos are kind of dumb. I suppose they have at least some purpose, but overall I am interested in the product, not the packaging. To paraphrase the old joke, someone spends $400 on a new camera (phone, laptop, knife, whatever) and spends all of their time filming the box it came in.
Frankly I don't think there is enough info in these videos, but I really don't want to make 5 minute videos that I don't think people will actually watch. Instead I am doing the video at a bare minimum and trying to forward people back here so they can get the rest.
Very nice boss.
Thanks, but yours are way more action packed and fun! :D

Thanks boss! I am like you, I don't like most unboxing videos. That is why I do them with power tools to make the video funny, well sorta.
Keep up the good work!

I liked those videos a lot!
Fix the audio and you are really on to something.
Is the Q2 a fixed blade with a folding sheath?

I suppose you could call it that. :tu:
