I've recently gotten into carrying Opinels and Sword peasant knives, and the more I carry them, the more I love em! I guess it's just the simplicity of them, and yet they cut better than some of my high end knives. I was wondering if anyone else on the forum carries either a peasant knife, or an opinel. I'm planning on getting some outdoor pics of these beasts in action. For this first post, I'm just going to show all four, here are my Two peasant knives, along with my opinel number 6 and number 9. :tu:

Unit 43 reporting...

Sent a distant buddy an extra SAK I had laying around and this showed up in the mail Monday. :mail:
I'd never seen one before, love the locking mechanism. What a cool knife! For me personally it (No. 8 ) is a little past my pocket carry size, but I'll probably keep it in El Jeep. Put the Soldier in there for size comparison... and I just like taking pictures of it! :D

My favorite Opie pattern is the "Coghlans" style..... best blade shape, best handle shape, IMO.
Coghlans in Nos 7, 8 and 9, plus a Le Savoyard in Inox.

How are you guys treating the wood to avoid swelling on the Opinels?

I'm currently having trouble with my 9 being so swelled that I can barely open it right now. I've been setting it in direct sunlight to try to reduce the swelling. It's a tricky time of year for the wooden handles. Here's my 8 for today.

Yep. That's why I was asking how others treat the handle to avoid this.

Are any of you guys having issues with the wood handles swelling badly? I've been having trouble with my No. 9 for a few months now. I've tried putting it in the sun during the day, and it seems to help for a while, but by the next day, it's all swelled up again. Any Ideas? ???
-
^ it would seem the wood is not sealed and is swelling from the humidity.
I wonder if you would apply mineral oil to the handle, and wipe it down if it would help. I did that to my cutting boards that I made some 40 years ago and still do on occasion for mom's and grandma's (now mine).

OK, thanks Loopcutter, I'll have to give that a try and see what happens. I left it on the dashboard of my car today to see if the heat from the sun might cut down on the swelling.

I think you may have already mentioned, but how do you like it compared to SS? Be careful not to get salt water on it! I just watched a video of someone leaving their carbon Opi in a glass of salt water and it's crazy how fast it changed after a couple days. But I HARDLY EVER store my SAKs in salt water anyway, lol.
Stays sharper longer... other advantages?

Oh, memories... Summer camp as a kid in France back end of the 70s and just having enough money to buy me a smaller Opinel, I even modded it (already??) with a small lanyard eyelet screwed into the handle. I've still got two No 7's but I think I'll end up giving these away. They're great knives that take a wicked edge, but they never find their way into my pocket. :-\
I'll either pocket a SAK or another spring knife (traditional slippie). There's simply no reason for me to choose the Opinel instead.

Inox - I just checked again to be absolutely sure. The one I had when I went to school wasn't, that makes it a carbon steel by default doesn't it? Not sure they even sold Inoxes back in those days, but I'm sure hordes of fellow Opinel owners will jump up to enlighten us now. :D

I gifted my parents a second hand Inox Opinel with a Virobloc that only locks open, which means it was made before 2000.
Don't know when you went to school though :D

I've still got two No 7's but I think I'll end up giving these away. They're great knives that take a wicked edge, but they never find their way into my pocket. :-\
I'll either pocket a SAK or another spring knife (traditional slippie). There's simply no reason for me to choose the Opinel instead.
My problem is I have more knives to carry than I have pockets to put them in, so often times my opies get left behind. I may end up downsizing my collection sometime in the future. :ahhh
I've sold off a heck of a lot of stuff over the last couple of years, but still have way more than I'll ever need. I don't mind having a surplus so long as they get carried occasionally, which most of my stuff actually does.

Same here, it's nice to pull one out to carry that doesn't see a lot of pocket time. I just got done moving a few of my knives into the boxes for later on down the road. I'm trying to limit my EDC selection as much as possible ( for now :D).

Some awesome collections and PKs posted here! Two PKs have found me in my life. A Marjacq stainless and Opinel #8 pruning knife.
I have carried the Marjacq a few times, but rarely have an occasion to carry the #8 Opinel hawkbill. I don't do a lot of pruning. :P Cool knives though!
They have two of my favorite features in a wood handled knife. Light and locking blade. :)

Opinels are my only non SAK folding knives these days. My two number 8's are daily service knives in the work shop out back and the kitchen. I love how Opinels cut. I will soon be getting a number 6 and maybe a number 4 to replace my "peanut' class of pocket knives.

Nice collection! Of the different sizes out there, my all time favorite would have to be the the No. 9. I just love the big blade for heavy duty work, and it carries well in the pocket for it's size. The No. 6 is a great EDC pocket blade in that it doesn't take up a lot of space, but is still a very capable little blade. Here is my current collection. Starting from top to bottom: No. 6, No. 8, No. 8 Outdoor, No. 9, My modded Super 9, No. 12 Explore, and my two Svords.

Does anyone else aside from me not bother with the ring lock for most cutting jobs?
I had a few outright friction folders over the years like the Japanese Higonokami and the Sardinian Resolza, and I started to use my Opinels like them. I have the pivot rivet snugged up so the blade is a snug fit, but still openable when wet. Most times I don't bother twisting the lock and just depend on the cutting force keeping the blade open.
When I first read that the virobloc ring wan't added to the Opinel until 1955, that was very interesting to me. All the years with slip joints made me think that maybe I don't need the lock. After all, Joseph Opinel didn't invent the peasants knife, he was just the first one to put the design into mass production. Before that, the peasants knife was sort of a locally produced by blacksmith/craftsmen thing.
So, for a few years now, I've been using the Opinel as a pure friction folder peasants knife like the true penny knife of the European working class. I still have all my fingers so far. :D
-
I don´t use the lock very often. Mainly because I forget to. And I haven´t lost any fingers either.

Today at work, about half an inch of the tip of my Opinel #12 woodsaw snapped off.
I may have put too much forward/downward force on it. Stupid, right.
I just kept on sawing though.
It served me well for 15 about months now, 4 days a week.
I like it so much that this evening, when I got home, I ordered another one.
It should be here this time tomorrow, only E 26 to my door.
I´ll shoot a comparison pic when it arrives.

I've got a standard 12, bought it because the complete opposite in the Opinel lineup, the 2 didn't have the closing friction I wanted (and no lock). For a general camping/outdoor knife I don't think one can do much better, aside from the Explore, which is Sandvik stainless and has a firestarter and gut hook.
-
Thanks, Cody!
I've really enjoyed the Explore the few times I carried it. The blade grind is really really attractive as well. My Explore is a bit too stiff, but I know that will ease up with time.
I had no idea it used Sanvik, so thank you for the info.
It seems to be Opinel's foray into multitools. The hook is well ground, the fire starter is thick and hides well. The whistle isn't great, but in a survival situation, it may be useful. The color scheme makes it really hard to lose as well. :)
Edit:
Spartan, that is very nice. :like:
I need to get an Opinel with that color scheme.

Also included the Douk Douk and Mercator as I view them as the same vein. Lower cost, great performers, and lots of history. If I ever start a true collection it will be one of these.
Now time to sift through this great thread.

The 6 gets used bumming around the house. The 8 slim is in the backpack and handles food duty. The 8 is part of my EDC rotation. The 8 outdoor joins me when I have to work offshore.
Can't pick one!

Looks great!
Thanks

I included the K55K because its slim, single blade, inexpensive- though not actually a peasants knife or penny knife.
I was only 1 when city tough guys carried it, 1950s....

In! I looked one years ago but then did not connect. Now at barbeque time wanted a sharp knife. And this is. Cuts like a dream. I think I EDC this in BBQ season.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190616/c8422e8d55817ceb558fc0ab344595cf.jpg)

I have the orange version and really like it. Congrats!

+1! Very nice! :like:

Tx, yes seems nice and light. Very sharp and lock seems reliable, do not accidentally open in pocket.
-
Did reshape blade to loose serrations. Still working with very fine stone (when I find that..). But it is quite sharp already and shape is final. Sharpened from both sides (serrations were in one side sharpening) so had to take some stuff off.
Minus is I might loose opinels can't see the edge style. Lets see when I find my fine stone. Anyway it would be easier to get regular No8. I just like handle on this. And blade was so wide that enough to do this. Still quite much blade.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190618/4cadfcbc5c542c95fcb4cb24f7601fc8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190618/d899a272d2e5e6a32fb54399b394abe1.jpg)

Nice job! The joy of Opinel is that you can customize them to fit your wants and needs without breaking the bank. :tu:
-
Agree. You can hammer it with piece of wood and no need to worry. This already cuts paper okay, when I find my good stone I test how sharp can it get. So seems very good use knife. Maybe have to ask my spouse has she moved my important stuff (again)
-
 Sounds like my home!

Here is my only one the Opinel no2
