Hey Bob, or anyone else for that matter. Can we put together a comprehensive multitool timeline? Like what time a tool what released? I am not talking pre-leatherman, not yet (heavens no) but from PST to now. I think I remember that the Paratool was SOG's first tool and it was the second tool on the market (next to Leatherman's PST). I think a time line would be great for a sticky and maybe for the main site to show people how things progressed as things got moving. Any ideas?

I like this idea! Would give a nice insight into how they have progressed and changed over the years. But also how companies reacted to other bringing out new products and how they tried to increase their market share.

Leatherman
1983 - PST
1986 - Mini tool
1994 - Supertool
1996 - Micra

2001 - Juice series
2004 - Charge Series (New Wave?)
Gerber http://www.gerbergear.com/history.php
1991 - Multiplier
2003 - Recoil Auto Plier
Thats my bit done! Although i will try and find out more.

David

If I recall correctly, the ToolClip was actually SOG's first tool.  And the Paratool was SOG's first US-made tool.  I'll look for more dates later but here are a few dates for Leatherman:

PST     1983-2004
Mini   1986-2004
SuperTool  1994-2001
PST II    1996-2004
Micra    1996-present
SideClip   1998-2004
Wave (original)    1998-2004
Flair    1999-2004
Crunch    1999-present
Pulse     2000-2004
Juice KF4     2001-2005
SuperTool 200     2001-2005
Juice C2     2001-present
Juice CS4     2001-present
Juice S2     2001-present
Juice XE6     2001-present
Juice PRO   2002-   2003
Squirt P4     2002-present
Squirt S4     2002-present
Juice SC2     2003-present
Squirt EL     2003-present
Charge Ti & XTi     2004-2007
Blast    2004-present
Fuse   2004-present
Kick     2004-present
Wave  (new) 2004-present
Core      2005-present
Surge     2005-present
Charge AL & ALX   2007-present
Charge TTi     2007-present

Is it possible to upload an excel file?  It's not listed in the allowed file types.

Good info there, the only ones i see missing are the pruner tools (Hybrid etc)
Another good thing to add into the mix would be what each tool has in it, but that might get a bit complicated.

And by time line I dont mean, one for leatherman, one for sog, etc. But one that is interwoven so people can see what product came out at the same time, kind of like a which came first thing (chicken or the egg).

Great idea Dave! No wonder you get paid the big bucks!  ;) ;D

Hey, I put a "master time-line list" up at the beginning of this thread. I included all the info I had close at hand. As we get more and updated info, it can be added to the master list. That way it will always be on top and easy to find.

(Please scan through the list and look for errors. This is just a bunch of notes I had here and there. I can't swear that it is all rock solid info.)

Also, note that there are still a bunch of significant tools not listed. For instance:
Buck 355 and 350
Gerber 600 and 700
SOG PP and PPP
Schrade Tough Tool ST1 and Tough Chip ST2

Bob

Post by: supratentorial on September 18, 2007, 05:17:40 AM
here are a few more:

Schrade:
ST1 1997-2004
ST2 1999-2002
ST5 2003-2003
ST6 2002-2003
TMT1 2001-2004
TMT2 2002-2002
TMT11 2004-2004

Buck:
360 1996-2002?
360BK 2000?-2002?
360FL 2000-2002?
360CM 2000-2002?
360WM 2000?-2002?
Harley Davidson BuckTool 360 2000?-2002?
Buck X-tract LED 2007-present
Note: I think some of those BuckTool 360 models were introduced in late 2000, and possibly even early 2001.

SOG:
Micro ToolClip   1991-?
ParaTool   1992-present
PowerLock   1998-present
PowerPlier   1996? or 1997?   -?
Pocket PowerPlier... just pulling this one out of thin air but maybe 1996? or 1997?
SwitchPlier   2000-?
ToolClip   1991-?
CrossGrip ?-present
CrossCut ?-present
PowerLock 2.0 2007-present
PowerAssist 2007-present
PowerCut 2007-present
Note: I sent "Chris@SOG" a PM to see if he could help fill in the blanks (and/or correct my mistakes).

Suggested corrections:
I think the Schrade ST6 was from 2002 rather than 2001.
2002 is still missing the Juice Pro and 2003 is still missing Juice SC2 and 2007 is missing the new version of the Spyderco SpydeRench.

It would be nice to fill in some of the discontinue dates also.

I couldn't upload an Excel file but if anyone wants one, email me and I'll send it to you.  Here's a PDF file:

List updated. Thanks!

Interesting to note how the number of new entries gets larger with each passing year. That's good for us! (But bad for our wallets)  :-\

Cool thread, thanks for doing the work J-sews! I didn't ever know about the Juice sc2 until I saw it on the list. I was kind of surprised, as it's not on the LM website. I guess the Pro isn't either though. I wonder why ??? Oh well. One question I had though, I found this site that claims the sc2 was introduced in 2001. Are they confused?

Cool thread, thanks for doing the work J-sews!

Actually, with DavidBinGA hatching the idea and Supratentorial and the other fellows supplying the dates, all I did was the easy stuff!  ;D

The SC2 was somewhat of an odd duck. It was not one of the original 2001 Juice models as the other website claims, but instead came out two years later. I've been told it originated with a large special-order from Sam's Club, hence the "SC" prefix.
Other oddities:

I knew you'd have the answers ;D So the SC2 was for sams club. Was the pro also for them?

The Juice Pro was reportedly made as a big special order for Costco. It packs in a lot of functions, but is almost uncarryably fat as a result. (I still like it though)  :)

Sams Club, Costco, there almost the same, right? Anway, the Pro never apealed to me at all. I don't get the huge small tool thing I guess. :D Oh well, I'm done derailing this great thread now.

Added a few more, including the Spyderco Byrd Harp (2006) and the Leatherman Skeletool and Genus. Also put the whole list on the Tool Wiki so it would be easier to find and update down the road:  https://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=Multitool+Timeline

Anybody see any tools we are missing??

Welcome back Doug- I hope your health problems aren't too serious?  Been wondering where you were!

We are going to try and include as many manufacturers as possible, including the Chinese ones if we can made head or tails out of anything that comes from there.

Hi Bob ,

Just popped in for a quick visit . I have had a series of health concrns of late . When looking at your time line I found myself wondering if you had something against the Utica Toolmaster and the rest of thier line ?

Howdy Doug, hope you are on the road to recovery!

I've got nothing against any models not currently on the list, I'm just uncertain of their introduction date. Again, given that this is to be a reference source, I hate to simply guess.

So it appears that we are developing a second list...a list of major tools with unknown introduction dates:
Gerber 600 Multi-Plier
Gerber 700 Urban Legend
Kutmaster MultiMaster
BuckTool 350
BuckTool 355
SOG Power Plier
SOG Pocket Power Plier
SOG Crosscut
SOG Crossgrip

Any more for this list? Any ideas on how to get them dated correctly?

Referencing this (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88057&highlight=Buck+Tool) page it looks like the Buck350 came out in 1998.

What about the Gerber Multi-Lite? The earliest review I found was from 7/1998.

Earliest for the Paradox was 10/2001.

I've got some forums I can post questions on so I may have some more information.

I seem to remember Bear jaws having something in thier line that was not " tooly " enough to be of great interest to me though they listed it with thier other multis for a time . I do not recall the name of that one .

Also you have the Spyderco Spyerench listed as 2007 , is'nt this pretty much of a reissue ? It's original introduction was as you noted in 1999 .

I agree. 2007 listing has been removed.

Perhaps we should keep the 2007 listing and just mark it as a reissue?  Technically they were discontinued and re-introduced, which seems like a fairly valuable piece of info for the collector.

...a better idea yet. 2007 SpydeRench is back in, marked (reissue)

I notice that you listed the Buck navigator in 2001 , but it was not offically presented ( and then never offically introduced or released to the public , I believe that should be added as a footnote to that listing  ) until the 2002 SHOT show.

Good lord, how did I screw that up?  :P

Navigator is now listed in 2002

Are special issues such as the Lady Leatherman , Australian issue leathermans or the leatherman pro to be considered/listed ?

Loggerhead 10X added in 2006 thanks!

Leatherman Juice Pro is already listed in 2002.

I don't know when the others were introduced?  ???

I'm surprised at how early the Swisstool is - 97!

I guess I didn't really get into Brand Name multis in a big way until Leatherman released their new line in ought-four.

Anyway,

Interesting that the Swisstool, probably a direct competitor to the LM Supertool hit the market, then after than LM hit back with their Juice/Squirts to take on the smaller, soft-curved tool carrying market, then Vic scaled back with their Spirit to take the Juices (and waves?) on directly!

1999 LM Flair + Vic AutoTool released , must have been some Industrial designers & Project leaders looking for new jobs in 99 :D. Maybe Gerbil I mean Gerber hired them & the seeds of the Suspension were sowed :D

I meant it as a joke, one guy making a few here and there whenever he has the time would be very challenging for a timeline.

Technically, the Rebar was first shipped to pre-ordered and BIN orders a couple days/a week ago. :)

Gerber MPT?

As you gents have rightly pointed out, we've got a few gaping holes in our timeline. The SOG Powerplier and Pocket Powerplier, as well as the Gerber MPT, are all missing from the list for the simple reason that we don't know exactly when they were first introduced. :( We know all three came out sometime in the mid-1990's, but the exact year is uncertain.

Heh heh, funny story, but last year at the Shot Show I thought we were finally going to solve one of the mysteries. I was browsing around one of the manufacturer's booths - can't recall exactly which one - alongside a gentlemen I had never met before. It was obvious that we were both interested in the new multitools, so we struck up a conversation. Turns out this was the guy - THE ACTUAL GUY! :o - who is credited with inventing the Gerber sliding pliers mechanism!
Whew what a rush! :ahhh
He only had time for a couple of stories, about the early days when it was just the old Gerber Multi-Plier going head-to-head against the Leatherman PST, and boy were they some fascinating stories! But ahh, we'll save those for another thread. ;) So anyhow, at some point I did ask him about introduction dates, which have always been a little unclear for the Gerber tools, including the MPT, but unfortunately it seems there were no good records kept of when the various Gerber tools came out. :( He remembered it was in the mid-90's for the MPT, but we already knew that. So anyhow, best I can do is keep watching for old Gerber sales brochures and literature to show up on eBay and try to gather up what data I can from them. :salute:

How about having a look at the wayback machine (web.archive.org)? For example, the '99 version of the MP600 page mentions it was introduced in 1997.

Good catch. That is an important distinction. :tu:

Not a bad idea. It would be a shame to lose that information before it fades from memory....

Late response (but better late than never, right ? )  ....

The earliest mention I can find for the West Marine Blacktip multitool was a review/promo video by West Marine for the first (recalled) version with carbide wire cutters, it was dated April 2010.

While the wayback machine can help greatly, early 90s is a difficult time because few pages were archived and nobody had a big internet presence. One thing that really helps is to do a Trademark search on the name of the tool. I come up with 5/30/1995 as the first use of the MPT trademark. I found this out using trademarkia.com. Here's the link: https://www.trademarkia.com/mpt-74641492.html

First I searched by Gerber. Fiskars owns Gerber. So I searched the trademarks that Fiskars owns or has owned. And MPT came up. You an also just do a search for MPT, and then weed through the results. (It's near the end of the list).

It's not the best search engine, but it works well enough to find out useful information on our beloved tools.

I have detailed information on Coast fixed-plier multi tools that I'll be posting in its own thread, with descriptions and how to determine the year of the tool, changes made, etc. I've only completed the original plier tool, the newer version with the different plier I am still researching, but I have basic info on that as well. Would you want to add the basic release information for this tools to to this timeline?

I'm going to split this up by the plier types, because it can get very confusing otherwise. Coast re-used the names and model numbers of the early pliers when they made the 2nd generation (what I call type-2) pliers.

Here's the 1st gen:

1993 Coast Pocket Mechanic released. Similar to SOG ToolClip. Two piece jaw, comfortable plastic scales, and more tools than the SOG. (blade, saw, serrated blade/file/driver, bottle opener/driver, backspring phillips)
1995 Coast Sport Mechanic released.  (New needle-nosed jaw with larger cutters. Tools are different: added scissors and fish scaler, removed bottle opener and saw)
1996 "Sharper Image" branded Pro Pocket Mechanic release by Coast. (Same as the Pocket Mechanic, but adding scissors)
1997 All Pocket Mechanic and Sport Mechanic tools get spring-action pliers
(??) Coast makes a scissor-less Sport Mechanic for K-Mart, branded "SwissGear". It has Spring-action pliers, so it's post-1997.
2002 (early) Last year for Pocket and Sport Mechanic tools with this original design.

And here's the 2nd gen:

1996 Coast builds new type of blunt-nosed fixed plier tool for the Nature Company (Model 771139). Tool has thin plastic scales with red buttons holding them on instead of screws. Still made in Taiwan.

1997 Coast makes a Chrysler-branded version of what will eventually be called the "Pro Pocket Mechanic" for the 1997 Chrysler Master Tech Gold Tool Award, given by Chrysler to techs who completed all the required training courses in 1997. This tool has LED scales.

1998 Needle-nosed "Pro Pocket Mechanic" with LED scales. First direct evidence of "Pro Pocket Mechanic" branding since the Sharper Image tool. (Even though the tool obviously existed in 1997, I do not believe it was called the Pro Pocket Mechanic until 1998). Has a coast-branded ballistic nylon sheath.

2002 "Sport Mechanic" branding re-purposed for a needle-nosed type-2 plier without LED scales. Model SM8001

2002 "Pocket Mechanic" branding re-purposed for a blunt-nosed tool. Model PM2001

2002 "Pro Pocket Mechanic" model PMG2500CP. Blunt nosed with gator grip and oversized sheath. This version was definitely made in China. It is the only version of the type 2 pliers I have found that has either Coast branding or country of origin etched on the blades. Quality has received a large bump with this version. Some of these are sold with a sheath with "Endeavor" stitched in red, some with "Coast Pro Pocket Mechanic" stitched in red.

2003 Needle-nosed "Pro Pocket Mechanic"  now has a part number: PPM2500. Still has LED scales and a coast-branded sheath.

2003 Coast makes an "Endeavor"-branded version of the Pro Pocket Mechanic. Rubberized scales (no LED), blunt-nosed plier head. Model ETC-400, sold with a "Gator Grip" socket and sheath by the Endeavor Tool Company. Was sold through 2011, after which it was a special-order item (you had to call a phone number) I am unsure when they stopped selling it special order. The page existed until early 2017, after which it was removed from the Endeavor website. However, I do not believe it was linked to by the endeavor website for that entire time.

2005 was the last year for all of the pocket and sport mechanic tools. In 2006 they are no longer listed on the Coast Cutlery website. The only tool that remains is the ETC-400 sold by the Endeavor Company.

NOTE: Early images on the Coast website show drawings of the Pro Pocket Mechanic with a can opener and red-buttoned (LED-less) scales, but I have yet to encounter one of these in the wild.

NOTE2: There were two Brookstone-branded versions of the Type 2 Pocket Mechanic. I am unsure what years they were sold. They are springless and have a differently-shaped plier jaw. One has black plastic scales (no LED) and one has metal scales.

NOTE3: There is a miniature Pocket Mechanic made by Barlow. It looks like a type 1 pocket mechanic, but has the type 2 LED scale and is the size of a Micro ToolClip. Coast and Barlow have a history of working together, so this may be a licensed product.

NOTE4: There is also a minature Brookstone tool that looks like the larger Brookstone pliers, but is also the size of a Micro ToolClip.

NOTE5: To my knowledge, there was never a Coast-branded type 1 "Pro Pocket Mechanic". Only the Sharper Image got that designation. Coast used the "Pro" designation for the new plier head, and sold the old Pocket Mechanic and Sport Mechanic along side the new needle-nosed Pro Pocket Mechanic for some time.

That's what I've got. I'm a very confident of the type 1 plier history. The type 2 is a little shakier. The dates for the type 2 should be fairly close, but I believe there may be missing off-brands for the type 2 pliers, and I'm not entirely sure when production was moved from Taiwan to China.

I've based my research on the wayback machine (archive.org), trademark history, magazine articles, google image search, and archived newspapers (specifically the advertisements), as well as actual eBay purchases and the eBay completed items history.

I should probably have made an addendum. In 1993 the Pocket Mechanic was marked "Patent Pending" on the main blade. The patent was either denied, or it was abandoned by Coast. Subsequent models have a pattern number on the blade, "PAT.39994". This is a proprietary number and David C. Brands (the inventor) said he couldn't tell me what it meant, as it was Coast's confidential information. The 1993 model also had problems with the backspring phillips driver being extremely difficult to extend, and then rounding off and no longer staying in the closed position. It was fixed very quickly. There are other identifying marks and information from year to year, but I will post all of that separately in a (very large) separate post.

Great reading...thanks! I had two of these that were identical. I was plumbing fulltime and working for a company in Pullman, WA. I bought one, left it at a customer's (if you're in the trades and you leave a tool on a job, 95% of the time you will never see that tool again). So they were both bought around 1995/'96. I still have a box and it's the blunt nose pliers. Also, have the lit that came inside with an added phone number. I don't remember if the phone number had something to do with the knife or not....I think I was after a spare sheath.

I had a multitool like SOG too......but this tool had HEFT.....something that was lacking in most multitools. It held up and was beefy hand sized. Not that the SOG, Leatherman et al tools were inferior, they weren't. The smaller multitools are and always will be, a compromise tool....a get your butt out of a sling type tool. I do remember a weakness with the PM.....I think it was the knife blade and had to be careful with it. This is basically a crude multitool, but very durable if you could wear something that big. I used the pliers WAY more than anything else on the knife and they held up. In fact, I probably bought the second one just because I liked the pliers so much...lol.

I figured them to be sacrificial @$30 something back then. After the last one got lost....I just lost heart.

I'd sure like to have another, but they are conspicuously absent on eBay.

Kevin

If you’re talking blunt nose or needle nose, then you’re talking about the type 2 plier.  I need to update this with pics to make things clear.

While I can't speak for Leatherman, SOG or several others as my main interest is Gerber, I agree with Chako's sentiment.   Called Gerber about the MP1 Maintenance Pro and not only is this discontinued, but the entire series is as of 2019.   Haven't had a chance to properly verify this alleged claim, but I'd say the same goes with Gerber MP 450 and potentially this is the case with the MP800 Legend.  My best guess with MP450 was this was done in 2016/2017 and I am basing the other model number on two different distributors with MP800.

Gerber's new website layout search engine has some major issues when you type in model numbers, series names and other information, so unless anyone here knows a direct Gerber or any brand for that matter with current products, calling the manufacturer directly seems to be the only tried and true method of confirmation.

This would be very beneficial if similar to Klein Tools, Gerber had a list of discontinued items and ideally when they were discontinued as well.
