Recently had a house fire. Here’s a couple of SAKs that suffered.
Is it likely the properties of the blades have been altered enough by the heat to have affected them?

If the scales didn't completely cook away, there's a chance that it didn't get hot enough at the blade steel to ruin their original temper. Still, sorry for your loss of SAKs and damage to your home :( I hope you and your family/housemates/pets/whomever are otherwise well!

Thanks, nobody was hurt and Boris the tortoise survived so it’s just a waiting game for the rebuild right now.
I am a complete amateur when it comes to SAKs and have only just joined the forum so please excuse any errors I make.
Is there a sticky or webpage anywhere so I can identify what models these were as it sounds so lame referring to “the small one”.
So anyway, I cleaned up the small one and fitted some new scales and it functions as it used to. I’m presuming if it was affected, it would have softened and not hardened any metal.

As you can see it is in ‘loved’ condition as it was my most used out of all my pocket knives. It also has the corkscrew, but the small corkscrew driver hasn’t been replaced yet.

Welcome to the forum fred!
Glad no one was hurt.
That small one cleaned up great. :tu: :tu:

Thanks for the link, can’t find exact model but it is the same as 91mm compact but without the hook.
The second knife in the original pic is a 111mm Adventurer. It was gifted to me as a Danish Army issue knife, but I am sceptical of this as it had no military markings and I can’t find reference to Danish issue SAKs.

Maybe an 91mm Golfer then? Welcome to the boards fred.
-
Could be a 91mm Compact made before 1991? After all, they only started producing the hook in 1991.
Welcome to MTO. :salute:

Hi fred2892 and welcome to :MTO:
I am glad to hear no one got hurt
And good luck with the rebuild :tu:
-
Good to hear no one was hurt. Sorry to hear about the fire regardless. About the temper on those 2 damaged SAKs, yes I believe they could very well effected.
-
Thanks for all the welcomes.
According to http://victorinox.metodi.me/91mmtools.php
It has a pre 91 corkscrew and pre 92 scissors so I think Don Pablo has nailed it as a pre 91 Compact.

A pre 1991 Compact IS a 91mm Golfer, like zoidberg said.
It was only when they added the hook they started calling it a Compact.
And welcome!!
-
Thanks for the correction, like an idiot I never even looked at the Golfer as I presumed it would have a divot lifter or a marker or at least something relating to golf.

Firmly sitted on my mechanical engineer training, I can assure you that the temper of your blades has not suffered.
To moderately change the properties, just to soften the temper, you need to go above 270° Celsius,
and that leaves a coloration on the steel, which is not the case.
By the way, it's a shame I live in Europe, because I have a lot of 111mm scales to give away.
Glad you are safe. Do not forget to lube your pivots with FDA approved lubricant.
-
The tip of your yellow knife could easily be put back in better shape on the back of a stoneware plate. Here is a climber I did. No special tools, just elbow grease and patience.
-
Thanks, it’s good to know the blades won’t be affected. I’ll have a go at improving the blade on the golfer as you suggest. I would never have thought to use a plate though, that’s a new one for me.
I am almost in Europe, I am in Norfolk, England.

Ooooops ?! MTO being essentially an american/international forum,
I automatically assumed you were outside Europe.
Pardon my french :D - love your fine example of british humor.
I could still afford postage to send you a couple of scales.
However, if your 111 is a slider lock, I do not have a spare slider.
"chin up ! "

With the correct "plate grit", it works wonders, once you get used to it. A knife remains perfectly usable with only 95% of its main blade.
-
I am glad to hear Boris made it. Share a pic of Boris when you gat a chance. I suspect he has a harrowing fire story to tell.
-
Just had a quick try at grinding as you suggested. It’s getting there, a bit more profiling and a polish and it will be good as new.

Unfortunately the 111mm is a slide lock and it’s the slide that’s the tricky part to get hold of.

Here’s a picture of Boris in his indoor house. He was rescued by the fire brigade and after a vet check has suffered only slight damage to his right eye retina caused by the smoke. This is him in his indoor house where he is today, if the weather was better (it’s raining and cool today) he would be out in the garden eating weeds and attacking cats.

Glad to hear Boris has only a small bit of damage :tu:
Will his eye be alright or does
he need work done on his eye
-
It will be something he learns to live with, there’s nothing they can do apparently. At first he was bumping into things on the right side but he seems to have got used to it quickly and is now running around normally.

I should collect more 111mm blades... Sadly I'm out of any spare scales of any kind.
I'm not certain if they do the same in England, but in the US one can often get knives that were seized by airports on the second hand market. That's how I grew and continue to grow much of my collection on a humble budget :tu: not sure what Shipping from the US to the UK would run, but if you search eBay for "NTSA" there's much to be browsed!
Maybe do something up in nice green scales and have it etched commemorating Boris's good fortune!
-
Glad everyone was safe. I hope the insurance comes in without too much hassle.

Fine piece of work on the yellow Compact, mate !
For your 111, the only way to go is to have it serviced by Victorinox, which is normally free of charge.
At worst it will cost you postage.
-
Boris is only 5 years old but will only grow another couple of inches. He was at a tortoise gathering a couple of weeks ago where he had a fine time running rings round a couple of hundred year old plus tortoises.
The insurance are quite happy to throw money at me but are being slow at getting the contractors organised.
I didn’t know about the victorinox service option, thanks for letting me know.

Whoa,I thought the turtle was one of those tiny ones living in aquarium-like boxes. This one is a walking table! Glad nobody got hurt, thought it's sad to hear about the fire... :(
And the England-Europe joke was pretty cool :pok: :D (sorry I'm kinda late to this thread )

I had a couple of red eared turtles. Started like this:

After 8 years +/-, they were something like this:

Sir, you sure are one successfull turtle breeder! :salute:
Some of my friends had these turtles but they never got bigger than a phone...
