Which swisstool should a "swisstool" virgin buy first? I am looking for some good advice, I have read darn near all these threads and it's pretty confusing. Short of buying all of them because they all have their great points as everyone has pointed out, I'd like a pretty much united opinion of which should be the "first". What ONE tool would you give someone in hopes to make the best lasting impression? That would probably be the one I want first. I only have two tools now, :-[ older Gerber and a LM Charge Ti. The Gerber makes a great paperweight and I love the Charge. I really like the looks of the swisstools and want to get one. Thanks for the input guys.

I would say that the "best" first one would be the X because of the scissors.

I would agree that the X would be the best choice of the larger Swisstools. If you don't need something quite so "heavy duty" or large, get the Spirit. It's a nicer size for carry and also has a great set of tools.

The X is a good choice but only if you want scissors , which I do but I dont want a file so I EDC RS (it has a curved serrated rescue/belt cutter blade instead of a file . If you do alot of cutting and need two blades , one serrated and one plain , ideal if you want one for food then the std one may be what you want .You just need to write down all the tools that you need/use frequently , then choose .

I carry an X at work where I am more likely to need scissors. My weekend carry is an Original, when I am more likely to need/want a second hard use blade. I can heartily recommend either as a 'first'.
I normally pair the X with an pioneer pruner to a couple of blade options. The original is most ofent paired with a Super Tinker. Lately, for some reason, I've been sticking a black bladed OHT in my pocket to accompany either of the SwissTools.
Yeah, I'm a SAKaholic.

I think your first Swisstool should be a Spirit.
If you want the scissors, get the original Spirit. If you want a pointy knife blade instead of scissors, get the Spirit S.
But either way, the Spirit is the latest and greatest offering from Victorinox. The regular SwissTool, X, and RS are larger, heavier tools. (although they are now sold with the same plier head as the smaller Spirit) I guess I tend to think of the older tools as heavy duty workhorses, whereas the Spirit is a newer and more evolved recreational tool. Buy it, and you'll be showing it off to your friends at every opportunity.
And in the end, it doesn't much matter which SwissTool you buy first. Because as you hang around this place, you'll be buying all of them eventually! :laugh:

Oops, sorry about that error. I don't have one of the new plier heads. From the pictures I've seen, I thought they were the same.

Ahh yes. I see what you mean; both are the same "style", but the Spirit is slightly narrower than the SwissTool.

Well, I have spent the money I had for that on the Leatherman Supertool 200 pack at Costco and another KF4...But yes, I have made up my mind which tool I want. I would like the Swisstool RS, it has the items I use most on a multi...Pointed knife and scissors, and it also has a longer phillips screwdriver to get in to those little toys a little easier and an awl or reamer whatever its actually called. So, after I save up again this is my choice. Thanks for all the input guys, i appreciate it.

I have ordered the Swisstool RS and can not wait to get it....so much so I did 2 day delivery :o I "should" have it by Wednesday :) :) :) :) :)

(And the nice thing about getting it in November is that it legally cannot yet be considered a Christmas present, so you still qualify for your full allotment of presents!)
