Title: Posting Pictures
Post by: Grant Lamontagne on September 20, 2007, 06:31:05 PM
Upload your own pictures

Make sure your pictures are shrunk down to the size limitations of the forum!  Instructions for that are listed in another thread.

Once you have the pictures down to a usable size, you can upload them to the site fairly easily.  Right below the box you type in is a button marked "Additional Options" and has either a plus or minus sign next to it.  Different browsers and computer settings will make it default one way or the other, so if there's a + sign next to it, click on it.  If there's a - next to it, you probably have all the options you need in front of you!

Down below, find where it says "Attach" then has a long box followed by a button that says "Browse."  Click Browse and a little box pops up with all the stuff on your computer.  Find the picture you want to post and click "Open."  The info on how to find that picture then appears in the box between Attach and Browse and usually looks something like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Def\My Documents\My Pictures\Adobe\Digital Camera Photos\2007-09-20-1142-44\100_2326.JPG

If you want to add another picture (keeping in mind the size limitations of the forum- Allowed file types: txt, doc, pdf, jpg, gif, mpg, png, JPG, JPEG
Restrictions: 4 per post, maximum total size 4096KB, maximum individual size 512KB
) click on "(more attachments)" and you can add up to 4 pictures.  Then click "Post" and you are done!  It will take a few moments longer to return you to the forum as the picture info is being transferred to the server.  This will vary depending on the speed of your connection and the size of your pictures.  If your pictures are too big, you will get an error message saying they are too big and you get to start the whole mess over again, so make certain you keep track of picture sizes!

"Borrowing" Pictures

This is a simple thing that happens all the time, but really is a no-no since you are technically stealing bandwidth from other websites.  I don;t suggest you do this, but if you really feel like you want to, here's how....

The first thing you need is an image location which is pretty easy to get.  Go to www.google.com, type in what you want, then select the Image option.  You get all kinds of pictures some of what you want, some weird stuff, some guy's vacation pictures and some naked women doing unnatural things.  Such is the nature of the 'net.  Find one you want and click on it.  Then Google takes you to the originating website but retains a small frame at the top, where it says something to the effect of "To see a full size view, click HERE."  Click there and a page opens up with nothing but that picture.

Go to the top of your browser, where you type in addresses (like www.multitool.org for example) and copy that jumble of letters, numbers and punctuation.  Then, come back to the forum- always good to have the forum open in another window or tab.  Once you are on the page where you type stuff, either in a new thread or replying to another one, you need to use something called Image Tags which are pretty simple to do.

Type [ img ] pasteyourlinkhere[ /img ] and your picture is ready to go.  Don't put the spaces in between the "img" and the square brackets!  I put them there so the server wouldn't look at me funny for trying to post what obviously isn't a link!  Also, make sure the second Image Tag has a slash in it so the server knows you are finished with the link.  Write your post around it and away you go.

Taking pictures from a website

If there's a picture on a site that you want to post here (or on any other forum) you can copy it to your computer and upload it again, you can try to find it on Google, or you can just convince any website to give you the link.  Go to the site you want, right click on the picture you want, and select Properties.  There will be a link listed that you can copy, then just follow the above directions.  They work whenever you have a link to a picture, provided that the picture is all there is there.  For example, I "stole" this image form myself on SOSAKOnline using this method:

The code that I typed in to make it fit here looks like this:

[ img ]http://www.sosakonline.com/images/stories/September_07/Saw/SawComp03.JPG[ /img ]

Only without the spaces.

Now that you know all about it, Multitool.org does not condone such activities and anyone caught using up the bandwidth and/or pictures from other sites are liable to get a nasty shaming and have all their beer drank should I ever meet up with them in person.  And, if you do it real often, I may strongly suggest you sit in the corner.

Def, how do you guys insert a picture in the middle of a post with text and then continue on with the text. All I can ever do is type my text part of my post and then attach the pics that show up at the bottom of my post.

Yeah I've wondered about that too ???

on other forum's I've just done the normal [img] picture [img] ???

That's pretty well how you do it, by using the Image Tags, but you can make them show up at other places in the post or other posts as well, but getting the location of the picture described above, and setting the tags where you want it to show up.  It'll still be at the bottom, but it's also be where you want them to be.

That also means you will have to edit your post to put the pictures where you want them.

If you don't want them at the bottom, and just in places where they matter, then you have to host them on PhotoBucket or similar website.  This one was stolen from my Facebook Profile:

A cool site i use quite a bit is www.tinypic.com lets you upload photo's to it and gives you links to use in all manner of situations so you just copy the relevant link and paste it into your posts.

Just remember that picture hosting websites often have limits on how long they will host pictures, so when looking back at older threads, the pictures may have disappeared.

This is true, which is why when i get back to uni i'm going to try and set up my own ftp server so i can easily host images. I've got the software setup i just need a new router (which my friend is providing) so hopefully by the end of next week i'll have it sorted.

Today when I try to post photos using the "[ img][/ img]" method, I keep receiving an error message reading:
"Sorry, you are not allowed to post links."

This is very odd as I have posted photos to this forum previously.  Does anyone know what could be causing this?

I think 50 (or higher) is way too high to be allowed to post pictures. I could bring up endless examples of epic pictures coming off new members, and even yesterday a bunch of people encouraged a new member to share pictures of his gear

Losing any data is something no one ever has to experience. Get Carbonite (http://www.carbonite.com/en/default.aspx) and you're set. It's $55 a year and runs in the background, uploading the files/folders you specify (or everything) to a secure server. If something goes poof, you still  have EVERYTHING. A much better solution than something like Photobucket for backup since it works with all sorts of files and is secure. I facepalm when I see people without backups, and feel pity when I see people who use external hard drives and think that's a backup. The latter don't quite know what to reply when I ask "what if there's a fire, flood, power surge while it's plugged in, or robbery?".

Prime example of someone I don't feel sorry for at all because they brought it on themselves: http://www.fmylife.com/work/12822574

I don't have "important documents".  I am a father of three not a bloody lawyer.  :D  I bank online so that all stays there.  I have all my work stuff on a work system - at work.  My phone is all online so nowt there.  All my emails are saved in hotmail so nowt saved there.  The only documents I create are photo's - hense photobucket.

My comp going phut is a mere inconvenience.  I would actually lose nothing.

You're posting the wrong link. You don't copy the lik from the address bar, you have to copy the link to the image. There should be 4 links to the right of the picture, copy the one with the IMG in front of it. Just copy and paste it into the reply window, don't add it with the img icon or anything.

No an attached picture will only show when posted because it is attached to the post.

You can edit the post and img link the attached picture if you wish for it to be placed within the post.

The picture size issue only applies to them being attached to the forum.   Embedding them in a post from Photo bucket or somewhere else is not an issue since they aren't taking up space on my server.

As for embedded photos being too large to easily view on the forum,  or software automatically resizes them for optimal viewing, so no issues at all with stuff from Photo bucket or other sources.

Sorry to complain, but I wish that you could zoom into attached pictures on mobile. I think you used to be able to do this because clicking the attachment would just open the picture up in the browser. Now it's a JavaScript "window" that shows the picture, and zooming in does nothing (the picture gets bigger for a split second, then gets scaled down again). At least in Firefox on Android that's what happens. I'm not sure if this is a new picture display thing or a new theme thing, but it's something I used to do on occasion that isn't as friendly anymore.

I apologize if this has been discussed before (I searched for this and found similar questions but not exactly this one).

Isn't it possible to implement an automatic resize feature? I mean, since the max single file size is 1024KB anyway, the system can resize the pics to this size automatically and/or optionally based on user's choice during posting. I don't claim to be a coder but I'd like to give a hand if needed (searching for any plugins/add-ons, configuration etc).

I'm mostly a desktop user and am capable of resizing already, but this adds a lot of additional steps (transferring the photo from my phone to the PC, saving it to a temporary space, firing up the resize tool, saving the resized version and uploading to the site) which kinda -uhm- "unnice" :)  :waving:
Title: Re: Posting Pictures
Post by: Spey on July 27, 2016, 05:49:52 AM
I have had issues with the site not accepting attachment photos (uploads to Multitool.org Forum - previously resized below the 1024kb threshold, per the guidelines listed).

I am wondering if there is a way to use embed codes from Instagram photos ??

I have tried using the both the url][/url and img][/img with the url (embed code) options to no positive results.

I would also agree with ddogu (issues referenced that he has had, I have also). Auto resizing upon upload is a tool that works well on other sites I have used. I do my best to try and make sure that photos I post will be available into the future, as many times the photos related to a tutorial or something that may be viewed into the future. Hosting photos offsite, with only links to the photos, get broken when a user chooses to reorganize their photos into newly developed organizational folders. I really dosen't seem to work for a user to just keep one large mass folder with all upload photos, because various sites require differing photo size restrictions.

Just post them as ...

Code: [Select]
[img]www.hostingsite.com/imagename.jpg[/img]
or click the (http://forum.multitool.org/Themes/ShelfLife-1/images/bbc/img.gif)icon in the reply window and paste the image address there.

I can't get Flickr to work for some reason. My links are the same as others I've checked but my pics don't show.  Any ideas?

It opens fine in a new tab but doesn't show in posts

Try to get the actual picture URL.
I think that's your problem.

(I found this off the net. No clue who it is!)
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/2/1418878_1e92283336_m.jpg
Is
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/2/1418878_1e92283336_m.jpg)
The link ends in jpg.

The one you are posting doesn't. I think Flickr may be making it more difficult to do this.

BUT!
If you click to download the photo and go to view all sizes you go here on your Flickr:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/142788496@N06/28216020654/sizes/l
And then you can right click these and get your image addresses which DO work.

Taaa daa!

You need to get to the share photo info -  a little arrow bottom right of the photo page.  Click that, then BBCode, then choose the image size you want and copy the text in the box and paste into the post here.  This info isn't available on the mobile version of the site, and I can't get the desktop site on my phone at all, but I can force it on my tablet.

Yeah, under where you type your post is attachments and other options, browse to the pic and attach it.

Due to restrictions you may need to reduce the pic KB size down before attaching and viewing is best in the 1000px by 1000px range.

Hi, all.

I had been posting with a few photo attachment, and am wondering is there anyway to preview the entire post with photo in it, before I hit 'post'?

I tried 'preview' and 'alt-p', both only gave me the view of the post without the attached photo.

As far as I know, if the attached photos are not embedded in the post, they wont show up in the preview.
The photo below is not showing up in my preview, because it's not IN the post.

Thanks DP for the clarification!

Just hope it could be seen, so it's easier to make a longer post with photo.

I remember long ago everything has to be embedded, but seeing we now have the option to keep it on our own server, I kinda prefer this--so the pix will forever kept here, in case other hosting service go out of business.

I tried Imgur many times, and no matter what I do, using forum code or "insert image" function in the "post reply", I still can't get it up.  I tried preview or even actual posting, but nothing shows...How do you guys do it?   Please help?

I'm not familiar with imgur, but is there an option to copy the 'code' of each picture? Paste this code into your forum message.
I'm not sure which is best to use, HTML Code, BB Code, URL etc but when I post from the MTO Gallery I choose BB Code then I think this option:

I resize all my pics before putting on MTO Gallery (or when I used Photobucket). I set the largest dimension to 1280. When they are too big they cripple the viewing for those of us with poor internet.

I actually resize everything to long edge=1000, and even size under 500kb before uploading to imgur(or MTO)...but just could get it to work.  It kinda sucks because I couldn't tell any story with caption, and everything just show up as attachment.

Well... we can try....

I went to imgur and found a random pic. The only thing I could find was "Embed Post".... which gives me the following to copy:
http://<blockquote class="imgur-embed-pub" lang="en" data-id="nZmjnkH"><a href="//imgur.com/nZmjnkH">A cat with Rottweiler bodyguards[/url]<script async src="//s.imgur.com/min/embed.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I don't know what to do with that. :dunno:

If from there I go to "Share" it gives me this:

I tried pasting this in this post, selecting it then clicking on the "Insert Image" button and got this:

Are you using mobile or on a PC. I've never found a good way using the mobile app. I use my desktop to post most of my pics from imgur. ?

If you open an account-( it's free )  you don't even have to bother resizing your pics. When you click on a pic you have several sizing options to post. I use the large thumbnail option which works great for the forum . Use the BBcode link

Like this

Thank you very much for pointing out my mistake.  (^▽^)/ I misunderstood about Google Photos.  ┐(゚~゚)┌
I have researched more about it.

In conclusion, we can get a special direct link of the photo uploaded to Google Photos. (⊙_⊙)
And even people who don't have google account can see photo using this URL.

For example ↓↓

h t t p s://lh3.googleusercontent.com/LG6gUrt6v2gkV7zNpQu2eGRpXF85edxZfBkjddyKHNOjl3P-TTALsZb5R9kuqDbeFtXkf_-QUpq7HBh7twsFHwK_dxi8VkaurvwJDTJZCKwZz1K3bWYbtYeI4yXa0keV6eMLdDIk-w=w1962-h1542-no?.jpg
                     ↓↓
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/LG6gUrt6v2gkV7zNpQu2eGRpXF85edxZfBkjddyKHNOjl3P-TTALsZb5R9kuqDbeFtXkf_-QUpq7HBh7twsFHwK_dxi8VkaurvwJDTJZCKwZz1K3bWYbtYeI4yXa0keV6eMLdDIk-w=w1962-h1542-no?.jpg)
The problems are that Google don't officially provide this service, and that the way to get these types of direct link is somehow unusual.
We will probably not be able to do this someday. (´Д`;○)

Therefore, after all, the easiest way to get direct link is to use another image-hosting services like Photobucket. (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و

I'd like to come up with the process for posting pictures that takes the least number of steps and requires the least number of new accounts or software ...

any advice would be appreciated.

My current process:

take a photo on the iPhone and edit it on iOS.
Email it to myself
Resize the photo :crash:
Upload as an attachment on MTo

Its pretty simple... I just wonder if there's a way around having a zillion photos living in the nether regions of my email account,

How to make direct-link using Google photo.

As mentioned earlier, you can create direct-link to Google Photo in an unusual way.
Google photo is free service, as you know. If you need more easy way, you may choose another paid service like imgur.com or Photobucket.com etc.

This method depends on the web browser.
You can do this with Internet Explorer and Google Chrome on Windows 10, or  Safari on Mac OS X. You can't do with Microsoft Edge(can't do step 7).
I have not tried another browsers.

This example uses Google Chrome on Windows 10.

1. Display the target image uploaded to Google Photo and click "Share".
Click "Info", confirm the actual size of the image. (In this example, it is 2400 x 1600.)

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9FXKJjes_3r9av85ehSHda5Szn1r1zphveq-Q9ncyZNh-5MJGU-GdIG_bXt0W2qMsRPe362xhQCTnCxzOZ3sDfIZr9AbnntTejgCfYzMUU7MjsyptjvKQCDmAPh8JMWRFxzxazsDBw=w1635-h899-no?.jpg)

2. Click "Create link".

3. Click "Copy" to get the link.

4. Open "New incognito window" from the browser menu.
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DZybCOMh0PdXMmalfD4D7ezYXLDYV07UhZSGAKGA7P40NhgOa6uggqd1JOr0Z40LtWYXsJPdaikFuV1QEk1qhZ_UZC-1MUwbNMjOcvpAHLyM-tTQTi0oYrdjxrhbNS-wkJM9hwzmKA=w1637-h900-no?.jpg)

5. Paste and go to the link get in step 3.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/fHxcfy8VX-Miloc2F6_OOgpRka797E2jXIARa9qAGTRiRbVvPZltBbPffn2rbtOnHIRub9oeA8ERK1SGMfxUuL_74EFBo5iCOOt0GH7iWLK4xs1CrVLbF5jOvuRDKScwuRSe7yIJEA=w1160-h773-no

To create dilect-link to this image, add "?.jpg" to the end of this address.

Direct-link URL is;
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/fHxcfy8VX-Miloc2F6_OOgpRka797E2jXIARa9qAGTRiRbVvPZltBbPffn2rbtOnHIRub9oeA8ERK1SGMfxUuL_74EFBo5iCOOt0GH7iWLK4xs1CrVLbF5jOvuRDKScwuRSe7yIJEA=w1160-h773-no?.jpg

"w1160-h773" at the end of the address is the size of the image displayed in step 7. You can change this to any size.
Maybe maximum image width that can be displayed is about w640.

For example;
w315-h210
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/fHxcfy8VX-Miloc2F6_OOgpRka797E2jXIARa9qAGTRiRbVvPZltBbPffn2rbtOnHIRub9oeA8ERK1SGMfxUuL_74EFBo5iCOOt0GH7iWLK4xs1CrVLbF5jOvuRDKScwuRSe7yIJEA=w315-h210-no?.jpg)

w630-h420
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/fHxcfy8VX-Miloc2F6_OOgpRka797E2jXIARa9qAGTRiRbVvPZltBbPffn2rbtOnHIRub9oeA8ERK1SGMfxUuL_74EFBo5iCOOt0GH7iWLK4xs1CrVLbF5jOvuRDKScwuRSe7yIJEA=w630-h420-no?.jpg)

w2400-h1600
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/fHxcfy8VX-Miloc2F6_OOgpRka797E2jXIARa9qAGTRiRbVvPZltBbPffn2rbtOnHIRub9oeA8ERK1SGMfxUuL_74EFBo5iCOOt0GH7iWLK4xs1CrVLbF5jOvuRDKScwuRSe7yIJEA=w2400-h1600-no?.jpg)

9. Post your image.

Now you have finally obtained direct-link URL.
You can post this image using this URL with "img" code ↓
Code: [Select]
[img] https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/fHxcfy8VX-Miloc2F6_OOgpRka797E2jXIARa9qAGTRiRbVvPZltBbPffn2rbtOnHIRub9oeA8ERK1SGMfxUuL_74EFBo5iCOOt0GH7iWLK4xs1CrVLbF5jOvuRDKScwuRSe7yIJEA=w1160-h773-no?.jpg[/img]

The only problem with using Google photo is that if someone doesn't have a google account they can't see the pictures.
Much easier to use imgur which is also free.

Oh, I'm sorry I misunderstand about Imgur.com. <(ll゚◇゚ll)>
Of course, if Imgur.com is easier, you should choose it. This method I introduced is too much complex!

Surely, if someone doesn't have a google account they can't see the pictures, when you just "Share" the image and use the link (up to step 3).

By using "incognito window", you can temporarily sign out your Google account (step 4 and later).
Fortunately, even someone doesn't have a google account can see the pictures with this image URL obtaining while signed out (step 7). ∑d(゚∀゚d)

...All the images I have posted so far are this tedious way. Please laugh. (´皿`)

I see now that you posted them by a different method. It does seem like a lot of extra work to get a pic posted .

Just because you asked   ;)

Using a similar method I was able to get these images to show with copying the address 2 different ways (both are the same link though) I used private window which is Firefox's Incognito tab  There is just a lot of code for each one though :ahhh

Thanks for trying.
I had thought it couldn't work without adding "?.jpg" at the end of the image URL. However, you have proved that "?.jpg" is unnecessary!
Thank you for teaching me. (*´﹀`*)
And it's a nice photo. I think it is suitable for a wallpaper on a PC. ( ﹡・ᴗ・ )b

Thanks hiraboo  That is a wall we are working on right now and it should be finished today!  :like:

If it comes down to it, that method for Google Photos isn't a terribly bad method but does take a few extra steps for me than Imgur :salute:

I have just recently joined the forum.  Is there a posting minimum amount required before pictures can be posted?  I try to add pictures to my post and I keep getting a 500 error.  I have made sure the jpeg size was under 500kb.

No minimum on posting pics and welcome to the forum. Have you read through the how to ?

Thank you for the quick response.  Spent several hours until I figured out in my case I had to shrink the pictures far smaller than stated for them to load.  After that everything loaded quickly.

You shouldn't have to shrink them that small. As long as they are under the limit they should load without a problem.

I'm just wondering how one gets to a maximum total size of 4096KB when you're allowed a maximum of four attachments with a maximum individual size of 512KB.
