Title: Shrinking pictures
Post by: Grant Lamontagne on September 20, 2007, 06:02:39 PM
Someone finally convinced you to buy a digital camera and you went out and bought a 22,500 MP camera and the pictures are too darn big to do anything with, right?  You probably own a PC, which I assume you do since if you used a Mac or Linux, you already know enough about this stuff that you wouldn't need to ask!

It's pretty simple- find the picture in your computer (likely in My Documents -> My Pictures) but don't open it.  Right click on the file and select "Open With" then go down to "Paint."  There are better programs, but again, if you have them, you probably don't need these instructions!  Everyone has Paint!

Once your picture is open, go along the top until you find a heading called "Image."  Click on that and you get a few options.  Choose "Stretch/Skew" and a new little box pops up.  Stick with the Stretch boxes on top as the Skew boxes will just make a mess.  The boxes have "100" in them, which is a percentage.  Change that to "50" to make the picture half the size it is now, "25" to make it a quarter of the size etc.  Make certain both boxes have the same numbers in them or else it will shrink one way and not the other, giving you a neat silly putty effect, but probably not what you are after.

Once you have the picture down to what you think is an acceptable level, go to "File" along the top and go down to "Save As" and save the picture with a new name.   I usually add an "a" or an "01" on to the end so I can tell it from the original.  Before saving, make sure the second drop box says .jpg or .jpeg as that's the most common file type.  When that's done, you can hold your mouse over the file (back in My Documents) to see if the file size has shrunk enough to be useful.  If it doesn't tell you, right click and go down to Properties and it will tell you how big it is.

Different forums have different size allotments- Multitool.org has a limit of 4096K (4mb) per post and a maximum of 4 files that can be uploaded.  That means that your pictures cannot be more than 1024k (1mb) each.

Uploading pictures will be in the next chapter- stay tuned!

*Updated to reflect new picture sizes on the forum*

The uploading picture's is the one i need, plus the actual taking of them in the first place ::)

I went down the woods today to try and get some useable pics of a farmer (alox one, not your actual grumpy farmer) but they were total crap again :(

Tell me what model camera you have and I'll see if I can find out what options you have, and maybe help from there.

Ok, so probably not much of a Macro feature to it then... Camera phones are usually set to focus on an object three to four feet away from the lens so trying to keep the subject in that range may be your best bet.

Beyond that, I hate Nokia! :P

Although this is an old post, it has been made a sticky - and new members join all the time - so is it worth editing to reflect the current file size limits?

Since getting a Sony CyberShot some software came with the camera, use it most predominately. Picasa is okay, but I didn't like the interface. Microsoft Office 2013 includes Picture Manager that I use to resize & crop forum signature photos. And to get a quick definition had downloaded Zoner Photo Studio 12

Those I use the most, and Paint for joining files, marking them up, or to touch up spots of a photo that has an embarrassing spot. Also good to cover up some information that you don't want to share publicly.

  TMI right?

  I'm not that gifted.   :-\
John Blanchard was good at placing objects from various photos into others. Have Macromedia (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash) version 8, but it don't work in Windows 7. Have a Vista OS on another hard drive that I can use. The other OS/drive serves as a backup if skritt hits the fan.

If you're using gmail, you can email the photos to yourself via the gmail app (not the gmail site). The app automatically resizes the images, so when you receive your own email and download the attachments to your iPad or smart phone your sizing is done already. You just upload them to your post and voila.

Zoner Photo Studio has free versions. I recently upgraded to version 12 which installed and is really free, and can do so many cool things with it. Just noticed there's verison 11 Professional... tempted to install it to see what difference it makes. In the past one could install a previous version for free, and the current version has limited functionality unless purchased for $99 to unlock the full thing.

12 I know works great. :D  ~  Download Older Versions (https://www.zoner.com/free-photo-editor-download) Note from the developer: Each version is its own program. The older versions will not be removed with the new installation. Each installation is their own.

On my android phone I use the photo resizer app. On my tablet I either use the same app, or if it's one already uploaded to google photo's I just download it onto my tablet and find google has already resized it.

So.  on the topic of resizing pics.
I took a screenshot on my phone.
About 1000 by 2000 pixels.
An image like that should be about 500KB, right?
But it was over 3 MB!
But then an online tool was able to convert it to a 300KB jpg, while keeping the same resolution.  :like:

Now I'm wondering why was the original so big, and what's the minimum size possible for a 1000x2000 pixel jpg?
Title: Re: Shrinking pictures

compression.

one thing is the size of the photo, the other is the specific detail.

sometimes you'll see a % slider for compression (usually it's better to stay between say 70 and 90, over which is a huge file with barely noticeable details on the web, especially when it's been resized to fit a screen), that will reduce the overall detail in the photo, up close or full zoom you can see some detail has been removed.

Ok. Dumb question. I have an Android phone. I don't seem to be able to upload my photos here. Maybe they're too big.

Is there a way to get into my Android phone camera system (it's an LG, about 3 years old) and just have it take SMALLER resolution pictures, so I don't have to downsize them????

You can use an download an app called photo and picture resizer to shrink the file size without losing the quality of the picture.

Whoo-hoo, it worked!  :ahhh  :woohoo:

Ok, so what I found was an ap for my phone. It's called Compress Photo Puma. (I'm writing this from my PC, so I can't necessarily link directly to it, but you should be able to download it). It seems to work great, and is very very intuitive. So now I can downsize my photos quick and easy to 500 and it worketh greatly.

Like this picture of a Tee-post I hit with the sawmill today. Hee-hee.

Well done.  :tu:

So shrinking pictures to attach to posts is one option and they go at the end of the post.

Another option is to put them on a picture hosting site (flickr etc) and insert the code into your post, that way they don't have to be quite so small (but still shouldn't be massive) and you can put them where you want in your post (eg between text).
