I went out for a ride today,it was a last minute decision as i was going to go to the gym (safer lol )well i was 5mins from my house when a lady driver overtook me and cut me up and then slamed on her brakes,i went straight into the back of her :-\ well words was said. She argued back  and off i went oh yes the story isn't over ,i finnaly got the where i ride off road, well off i went flying down a dust track and got to the corner and boom nearly hit another cyclist :ahhh luckily i drifted around the corner and missed him, nope not finnished yet :D off i went through my local heathland thinking this isnt a good ride stopped for a drink and food, well off i went as had a important meeting at work so headed in that direction via my docs to get my prescription, came towards a main rode i was ok on the left and ok on the right but there was a council pickup going passed very slow,i decided i could easily make it onto the main road but sadly the car on the right decided to exelerat and over take the council van so boom she hit me full on at about 40-50mph i came off her bonnet went about 12ft high and hit the tarmac with a smack to my head, :-\ well luckily the helmet saved my head and got a few cuts and grazes, front wheel bent tire pushed off chainring bent and bar tape ripped, but all i can say is thank god for cycling helmets,im a bit saw now and got a headache but im ok,so stay safe out there guys n gals :tu:
-
Good lord Zed what a horrible chain of events. I'm just so glad you are ok but the headache and the head injury should be checked I think. I'm glad you are experienced enough to wear a helmet.
-
Cheers mate, ive wore a helmet since 89 as head injuries are one of the main traumas coused to a cyclist,i got checked out and just got back from AE,ive got to take it easy today,i really ache now but things could of been a lot worse .
-
Is a helmet optional in the UK? Here in Canada it is the law to wear one.
As for the rest of it...good lord. Talk about an ill fated ride. Happy to hear your doing a lot better than the events would suggest. :salute:
-
What an extremely unlucky chain of events... Were these people aiming for you ???
So glad you had the helmit and got checked out.
Take it easy and feel better
-
sorry to hear about this, what a bad day
-
Holy crap Paul, you had a bloody day from hell! Hope you heal up quick, and feel better soon!!
-
Ouch. Glad you're ok. Did you get the driver's details?
-
Damn :o Glad you're ok buddy :tu:
-
I´m glad to hear you made it out quite ok!
Although I suspect there is not much to hurt in that noggin...My wife always says "it´s hard to crack a soggy bread" when I hurt my head and i´m not sure its a compliment.
JK - I wish you a speedy recovery and hope there is not too much damage doen to the bike.
-
Thanks guys, feeling sore now but ok,got the night off work, yes got the girls number and she had mine, she was also shook up and she rang me too see how i was, bikes okish,i bent the chainring back but the front wheel needs trueing, ill do that another day and fit the tire back on :tu: im just glad ive not broke any bones :tu:
-
Geesh Paul, did you forget to payback a Wonga loan or something? Glad to hear your mostly intact :tu: Time for some body armour?
Chako, sadly helmets are optional extras for cyclists
-
Now now chaps. Helmets are optional in the UK and there are good arguments both for and against wearing them. MTO isn't the place to be having these discussions.
-
Here in Jacksonville I think even the drivers of cars should wear helmets, they're so reckless and stupid. ::)
-
Bugger me that's a crappy day mate :(
Sounds like you at least dodged the bullet mate :)
-
Glad your OK. Sounds like it could have ended a lot worse :(

I took a big tumble off the low side of my mountain bike one night many years ago. Landed head first. I still reckon I gave myself a concussion. Soon as the bump went down,I got my first helmet,re painted it in Jarno Saarinen's colours, and have worn one ever since.

I'm not particularly swayed one way or the other on this topic, and obviously having one on help Paul today, but there are arguments against the wearing of helmets: http://bicyclesafe.com/helmets.html

I guess it all depends on how you value your life ,i got off well from this accident but due to the impact that my head hit the tarmac the helmet possibly saved my life :salute:

As I said; I'm not remotely anti-helmet, but I do think it should be a case of personal choice rather than totally mandatory. :)
I'm VERY happy that you were wearing one today. :tu:

holy smurf! horrible chain of events, but I'm really glad to hear you're ok, Zed!
I don't care if helmets are mandatory or not, but I will always wear one... I wouldn't be around today if I hadn't been wearing my helmet 20 years ago.
oh, and on a related note -- for my sons, helmets are ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY. :D
-
Im the same with my kids and helmets :tu: cheers mike i love this bike and its evolved over the last 4 years, ive bent the chainring back and put some tape over the damaged bar tape, just need to true the wheel :salute: angela has come home to look after me :D
-
Glad you're ok, Paul.
As for helmets, around here kids up to 16 I think have to wear them, for adults it's not required.
-
Well, I got a bicycle helmet a couple of months ago... still feel like a nerd wearing it.....

If I ever get another bike I will be wearing a helmet whenever I ride. Way too many nuts on the road these days and they're all on a smurfing cell phone while driving. I don't care how nerdy I look :)

Glad to hear you're ok my friend :tu:.

First, glad you're ok, Zed! :tu:
It's funny how different cycling-culture is in other countries, compared to here. Maybe we're more used to cyclists or something

Don't worry D, you'll look a lot less stupid when you get the bike to go with it :P
Paul, glad you survived your ordeal without more injuries. I know you're well practised in the art of bike crashing ;) but that could have been a lot worse :o
Take care buddy, and heal soon :salute:

-
Sounds like she´s a keeper, Zed.
On the Rebar: Be cautious! There have been pinchings reported as of late - Don´t hurt yourself. ;)
-
In Spain, you are required by law to wear a bike helmet, however, they tend to turn a blind eye in built up areas (which I believe is where it's needed more) and you are exempt in extreme heat conditions (to prevent baking your brains).
I believe this is all new here, and people are still adjusting.

When i did road racing i had to wear a helmet but while racing but never wore one training as prefered a cycling cap this was a fashion statement as back then helmets was not wore by pro's,but i always wore a helmet mtb'ing as pro's had to wear them,as time went on i thought more about my health and less on fashion, :tu:
Michael the post hasnt come yet but ive a box of plasters on standby :D
-
Ouch, glad you are okay. I don't bike on street because of this, only separated bike path if I could.

Ive done many petitions for more cycle lanes but sadly cyclists are treated like 2nd class citizens even though the goverment push for people to cycle to work

They are here as well, but most of them act like they own the road. Hwy # 2 (back road) is HORRIBLE for bikers not following the rules. It very common to go around a turn, and find a group taking up the whole bloody lane! I can't even count how many times I've almost hit someone on a bike. It's a windy road, with trees close to the road, bad visibility, and the speed limit is 80kph.
I have seen the RCMP with groups pulled over a few times before, which is great, but doesn't really seem to help the matter much. I'm really surprised (glad) no one has been killed yet, but it's bound to happen.
We are starting to see more bike lanes pop up though, and I think that's fantastic! I enjoy biking, even though I don't do it nearly as much as I used to.
When I was young, helmets were not really common, but as they became more popular, I started wearing one. One time, when I was jumping in and out of ditches, I flew off my bike and went head first into the corner of a metal mailbox. It cracked the helmet pretty bad, so I'd hate to think what it would have done to me if I wasn't wearing one.
I think it's great that it's law to wear one here. It will save lives, and save taxpayers money from medical bills.
-
Running away from the problem doesn't make it go away - more cycle paths don't necessarily make things safer. Better education (for both drivers and cyclists) and more empathy between groups would help.
Riding defensively (taking the lane, using primary position, etc) isn't a crime, at least not in the UK. Increasing your visibility and road presence can help with drivers, but as a cyclist you need to be responsible for your actions.
As a driver, you should drive according to the conditions particularly if it's twisty or the visibility is poor. It's a speed limit, not a target. If you know that cyclists use a particular road, take that into account when driving along it.
And remember, the plural of anecdote is not data.

Oh I agree that there's no substitute for proper training and experience. My son recently did his Bikeability and I was impressed with the level of coaching the kids got :)
He's 11 and has his off moments but is a pretty competent cyclist, certainly a lot better than most adults and motorists. I've told him the only way to be safe is to treat everyone like there an idiot, which is funnily enough what my dad told me all those years ago :D

Assume everyone else on the road is an idiot is damn good advice. :salute:
-
Edinburgh got quite good about marking out cycle lanes on a lot of the busier roads, but have totally failed to enforce them so far to many drivers simply ignore the fact they exist. Really hacks me off TBH. >:(
-
Sadly i bet the girl who hit me never really thought about cyclists, bet she does now ;)

Paul I do have a confession, I found my mountain bike in the back of my lock up garage the other day. I say 'my mountain bike' , well I brought it about 5 years ago at a bootfair thinking I could go out with the kids on a weekend etc. in a hope and dream of fitness, but I've not ridden it after the first day I got it.
then on Monday I did start going round the block 'with dog in tow', spurred on by your get fit campaign. so I'm watching this thread with interest.
will Zed *get back on the horse* so to speak ?
should a silly old chap, with limited coordination, like me, even attempt cycling?
should I get a helmet ? lol
and maybe knee pads ?
*fyi ten year old jack russells don't like running for long in the midday sun
-
I'd just ride away from the main roads until you get your confidence up mate :)
-
Agreed. The best thing is to get back up in the saddle right quick.
And thanks to Detron, who pointed this out...this is my 11,111 post lol.

Helmets should be mandatory. I cannot see an intelligent argument against this.
I didn't wear one when I got hit by a car on my bike, and i was incredibly lucky and never hit my head! or i don't think I would still be here. Needless to say i always wear one now.
Glad your okay Paul its horrible feeling being hit by car, expect to be very nervous when you do get back on the saddle too. Did you see my message on Facebook?
