Title: MAY 2024 MICRA 30 Day Challenge
Post by: gra_farmer on January 13, 2024, 05:43:48 PM
I am a huge leatherman fan, and have been since I was 10 years old, since I was bought the PST. At that moment I moved away from Victoriox SAK.

In joining the SAK Classic 30 Day Challenge, I have started to appreciate the wee classic for what it is, and it got me thinking about the Leatherman Micra...for me an underused tool, as I favor the Leatherman charge.

So whom would be interested in throwing down the belt carry EDC for a pocket gem that is sometimes over looked?

The challenge is for the Leatherman Micra to be your only carry for 30 days, a picture of use for each and every day, and a bit of text to highlight your use. I completely understand that sometimes the Micra will not be enough, but it's to be your first consideration, push yourselves....you will be surprised just how far these small tools can go and you may not turn back?

As for the month, let's build some interest....so how does May 2024 sound?

I am new to this forum, so will reach out to the mods to assist, but if there is interest to undertake the challenge please respond and we'll see if it's possible.

All the best, Gra

Just to whet your appetite, here is a shot next to the Victoriox Classic, the size is comparable, but in hand and for a carving task the Micra wins hands down.....this is going to be an exciting challenge

I love the Micra, and it's easily my most carried Leatherman over the last 20+ years.  The "only" part makes it a challenge.  In in!   :tu:

I haven't carried my Micra in many years now.  Used to carry one in my change pouch when I worked in a prison.  Not carried it much since.  Might be fun to get one out and try it out for a month.
I'm now doing anything in May, except gettin' older, so sign me up.

Good to have you on board. I am the same as you, started carrying it, and then it got lost amongst day to day life. The classic challenge reminded me of this little gem, and those joining in the challenge can become reacquainted....

Well, gra-farmer, I definitely couldn't take anything into the prison.  The Micra just seemed to fit into my change pouch and never got searched.  🙄
It's be 23 years since I was retired and I've picked up a couple more Micra's since then.
It should be fun breaking the old girl back out for a while.

I quite fancy joining in with this, but don’t actually have a Micra.

Strangely, there doesn’t seem to be anywhere in the UK to buy one online except the official Leatherman site. £50 for the tool plus £30 shipping seems a bit mad.

Any recommendations other than buying used from a Facebook Leatherman group or trying to find a camping or outdoor shop that has them in stock?

Do you have eBay option there.
Many are listed in the states for under $20 (US)

I have been tempted, but a slap applied firmly to cheek below the eye fixes my impulse🙄

And, I agree $50 is a wee high for this model, even today! Outrageous,  for a non plier tool.  Makes the V Classic a steal.

On average we pay 1/3 higher prices on everything, for example we expect to pay an extra $100 on the US price of a leatherman arc, based upon current exchange rate...

I know, not till MAY!☺️

Caught myself looking at a  BLUE MICRA 😵‍💫.  Hit with sticker shock. Do, visited the auction site, better prices, sure many TSA acquisitions, pocket wear from keychain attachments, etc.

To curtail my lust, I located my two MICRAs that I remember having.

When I travel, with checked bag, a MICRA & STYLE PS ride in a medicine bottle in my 1st aid kit.  The scissors are great and the PS pliers are handy where my XXL fingers have trouble.

And, my other is a Heritage model, rides in the XS sheath, and this morning I dressed it up with a lanyard to make it easier to extract from my pocket, in MAY😉

For now, my lust factor has been dialed down 👍

Loop, how do you like that sheath? I've had one in my Amazon cart forever and can't make up my mind about whether it's worth it or not. It sure would be nice to keep my Arctic Micra from getting dinged up since I love the color so much.

I have not carried it this unit YET!

I do carry (pocket) my slip joints in a sheath and plan to carry the Micra in this sheath for the May challenge

I will rub it down with Mineral Oil first and allow it to dry as it feels dry to me today.

If you have the Arctic, that is a nice frosty color, I WOULD protect it and the XS sheath will do that.

And, if I find a NAVY in new like condition it will be sheath carried as well.

It is a perfect fit.

Here are some pictures for you. To compare.
I carry a 58 Vagabond daily in a small RoughRyder sheath from SMKW.   The Micra fits in that as well.

For a $50 Micra the LM sheath seems a smart move.   Otherwise the RR from SMKW is a good cart add on if you are needing to round up for the free shipping.

I've been looking at those small pouches for the longest time.  I'm getting that itch once more but the Boss Lady has me on a SHORT leash since she retired.  I know I can make a perfectly serviceable slip for one but the itch is still there.

Don't know which one I'll use, yet,  got several around here but I definitely won't use the one from  what seems to be the Israeli Space Agency.

Why does May seem so far off?

You have time to each acquire a few Opinel’s and join the March challenge😉
   It will be fun!

Plus Opinel’s are less expensive than AWL SAK models.

The N08 is most popular, the 6 is pocket friendly, I like the Walnut.  Also, acquired the N09 for my XXL hands. And they have a nice folding saw and a folding FILET KNIFE, great for Montana Trout 😜😋. And even kids models and kitchen kits.

 :woohoo:

Glad to have you on board

So I thought I would practice with Micra before the challenge and give a few ideas on what to post.

First up fire lighting

So the Micra has a chisel grind on the blade which for right handed people, it is difficult to do those nice curls in wood, as can be seen below...it bites too deep

(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240204/60e0ada2a1bf5d5c34ff96dde98f3f41.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240204/9e412c56404ce0432cdb3d45c46592d7.jpg)

So you have to change hands to get the curls you need....so now I need to practice left hand carving....

In the end fire lit, and moving on to the next project....well it is solar panel Sunday for me...now not to fall off a roof

The Micra looks so small, on the panels, and I have 200 metres of wiring to sort out  :multi:

Thanks for doing this field test!

You have time to each acquire a few Opinel’s and join the March challenge😉
   It will be fun!

I'm certain that it'll be a fun challenge, LoopCutter.   I almost burnt out with the November and December challenges, back to back, last year.  I figured a 4 month break would be ok.
I've got a couple of #6's, one that I modded into a wharncliffe carving knife. Both came from Sportsman's Warehouse and were sold under the Coghlans brand.  Sadly, they no longer sell them.  SMKW has them in catalog but they're always out of stock.   The eBay is an option for another but the carbon steel ones seem harder to find.

Perhaps only a 2 months break?  IDK

Gra-farmer got an EARLY start with pics to get my blood going.  I dug my old carry out this morning.  No snide comments please because I definitely know it needs a real good cleaning.  Picked it up sometime late 96 or early 97.  It's been an awesome tool for many years now.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

I,  too, had forgotten about the chisel grind on the blade, but everything else is just like I remember.  My last day working for the State was November 21, 1999 which may be the last day I actually carried the old girl.  It's been pulled out of my smalls box to handle different chores though many times since.
Looks like May will be a nice month of remembering things that I'd long forgot.

Been thinking about buying one of the Heritage sheaths for it but it's never been confined to anything smaller than the old change pouch that I carried.  The old one finally wore out and the Boss Lady picked me up a new one but I'm not sure if the new one is slightly smaller, I know that the leather is heavier,  so the Micra doesn't fit like I remember.

I've got 2 or 3 other Micra's around the house that will probably see some time out during the challenge too.

Just for giggles, I tried using the Micra on a paracord knot but went back to my MiniChamp.  Perhaps with more practice and patience the Micra will work.

You should join....sign up you know you want to....

Some more pictures to wet your appetite....food prep

I wanted to see how the Micra was compared to the classic.....the cutting comfort was soooo much better, but the chisel grind makes it difficult to keep the cut straight.....but it is a more aggressive cut and made short work of everything.

I may regrind the edge to a double bevel???

I would not suggest the double bevel on the blade just yet!

Have you noticed how often you must touch up the blade on a Classic or any SAK???

Compare it to the life of a Micra blade,  the sharpness factor stays for a longer time, and is easier to restore it sharp with less effort only to one side.

Try it, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Still considering this challenge.

It would be a difficult one for me given that I can't use it at work so it would be limited to days off etc.

That said; here it is down the pub where I may/may not have had a few too many with an old school mate

I'm in! The Micra was the first Leatherman I ever bought. I carried it for a long time until I tried to mod it and messed up the Chicago screws. I managed to fix it with the Loki wrenches, but I've not carried it in a long time. I can replace the Fiskars scissors and Manager from my keys for the Micra. This is gonna be fun! :salute:

Apologies for not keeping up the posts, fractured my wrist which has messed me up.....

Anyway, more ideas for using the Micra....today a Trollen Wheel template (I will be making this out of wood). The final product will be part of the many presents for my soon to be 7 year old girl.

Just a few more days and the challenge starts.

For anyone new, the idea is that the Micra is to be carried every day for 30 days, on each day you are to provide a post with a picture of the Micra (ideally being used), and if you have time (particularly if there is something interesting going on) a short bit of text.

Now I am not asking this to be your only tool, but in light of the challenge, the Micra should be a first consideration for any suitable task.

I will upload a few teaser photos tomorrow.

...some simple gardening to start, but I am just about to start a complete home build this month....so fun times ahead.

Hello
Today is day 1 so here is my first pic. Pretty much my first  EDC on a daily basis.

Now I am off to the west island of 'Stralia tomorrow where judging from newspaper stories any form of MT with any form of sharp something will be frowned upon by the local constabulary
I think it best not carry anything then and as I am travelling with cabin baggage only even wiser.
At the start then I will be back on day 6 with a bunch of catch up pictures if that is ok with the rest of the team.  I have a few Micras to share pictures of.

Nice picture, the Micra in its trusted position. Completely understand about not wanting to fly with her.  Catch up pictures with one post for each day is fine.

Have a nice trip  :)

So May is finally here and the start of the Leatherman Micra challenge....

It's been a busy few months leading up to the start of my home build, and still have loads of stuff to donate, throw and store....one of the first tasks after the rooms are cleared is to put the floor insulation down....Micra in hand to attack the 4 metre high pile

Day 1

After a week off work, I’m back for 12 consecutive night shifts.

Used the Micra to open a beer this morning to celebrate making it through the first three nights without losing my sanity.

Day 1

May is actually a horrible month for me to do a challenge, but there is no way I'm going to miss the inaugural Micra Challenge!  The Micra is, hands down, my favorite Leatherman... no, my favorite multitool!  It was also my first Leatherman waaay back in '97, and I have been carrying one ever since.

I'll be away from my computer for several days this month, and I will also be in a location that doesn't allow any sharp objects for a week.  I'll do my best posting a daily pic, sometimes from a hotel.  :ahhh

For today's pic, this will be my daily carry.  I bought this one 5 years ago when I finally retired my original Micra that I had been carrying for 20 years.  The black paint shows pocket wear much quicker than stainless, but I don't mind. 🥰

Day 1

I was introduced to a Micra by a co-worker I was training, when I needed a scissors to cut a 20 ga wire for a circuit mod. He had it because he “borrowed” it from his dad and it was Multitool.

This my first Micra, sees action when I travel as I pack on checked luggage stored in a medicine bottle with a style.

Today, I put to use, opening letters for bill pay tasks.  Tried the scissors, but blade functions better.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

In my construction job this Micra was a sidekick to a SuperTool300 or a Rebar.

Yes, I am just now seeing this thread. Some great photos and uses thus far! But if y'awl have some room for an 11th-hour entry, I have a couple-few Micras that may be itching to see a little action, and I could use something to keep my mind on this month.

If y'awl will have me aboard, my first photo will come before midnight EST (currently UTC -4).

Your most welcome.

Some have also stated that they will also have to catch-up due to work / travelling, so no blades allowed.

The main thing is to have the Micra as your first consideration as a tool, you will be surprised just how far it can be pushed and how much it can do.

PD
Nice carry.  I hate how things that use to be common carry are now vilified.  I feel so naked when I have to go without at least a keychain tool.

So ahead of the start of the challenge, I have been carrying the Micra the last few days...just trying to gauge the level it can be pushed....

...some simple gardening to start, but I am just about to start a complete home build this month....so fun times ahead.

I love seeing the small tools tested.  Usually it is surprising how much they can handle.

I’ve been debating signing up for this challenge.  It seems the last several fun things I’ve signed up for, in life or on forum, have either been cut short or I couldn’t do because of higher priorities.  But I’m going to give this a shot.

Day 1 of 30:
Had to change out a zone valve motor again, and the ratcheting screwdriver I had couldn't get into the tight space to remove the screw tl release the bad motor. Micra to the rescue! Of course, it also tightened the screw after installing the new motor. Also used the blade to strip a bit of wire. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240501/dd1677a978667effe8db6d7957d92fdb.jpg)

Reprofiled the blade edge so that it's even on each side and sharpened it.  Found this Micra when I was a car detailer almost 25 hrs ago.  It was in a car that was bought at an auction and anything found was fair game.

Opened mail today.

I will be a purist with this challenge. I will be doing this challenge with my Micra, and thats it. I am looking forward to the challenge, because I have a feeling that it is going to prove that the Micra is adequate for 90% of what i need, and it’s going to save a lot of weight in my pocket.

Day 1

I'm beginning the challenge with three Micras. At left is a green 02/20-03/20. In the middle is a blue Lexan 12/01, gifted to me by Aloha not long after I joined MTo. The red 07/20 is owned by Mrs. FX. Tomorrow will see the green one in action.

Got 2 SS models.  The one in hand is 4/13!

Ouch , just slice my thumb on the blade checking the date code

Great pictures everyone and a brilliant start to the Micra challenge, this is going to be a good month  :woohoo:

DAY 2

Wife agreed to taking the primary school ducklings they hatched.....

so during my lunch break yesterday and a sleepless night, I created a hard wood (oak and red wood scraps run up on a table saw) frame and wired it...the Micra helped finish the edges (removing that sharp sawn raw edge with the blade) and removing the odd staple gun rouge staple with the flat head screwdriver.....just need to finish the roof and hatch to get in.

We collect the ducks on Friday morning.... hopefully I will finish it in time  :dunno:

Might be a wasted effort as we have stoats nearby...but still looking forward to it.

Day 2

Excepting completed cat toys and pace-count beads, polyester paracord is now banned from my house. What better excuse to see how Micra scissors handle paracord?

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

When the cord is intact, multiple passes are needed. It does much better on the "guts, and only requires two passes on an empty outer shell. I may see if the Micra scissors do any better with nylon paracord, but I suspect that's not really their intended use.

I'll do a little compare and contrast tomorrow.

My limited experience with paracord, I have found scissors to be a fail.
I use scissors more for finish work. For cutting a smaller piece off a hank, I typically use a blade.

Appeared to be a commemorative from the ISA of some sort.

Day 2

I opened a lot of mail at work today.  About 20 minutes of opening mail in a long unattended inbox.

So far… I like the small blade, dare I say, better than a Victorinox Classic. However I do find it bothersome to open up, especially when doing so several times.

At least I have memorized where the blade is within the tool.

I look for the tweezer, and then know its on the opposite side.  Folding them halfway open, like in Post #113, makes it handle a little more like a "real" knife too.

Many owners of the Micra do not notice that blade is a chisel grind blade.
For that reason it is my belief that it hold an edge much longer and outperforms the SAK Classic at staying sharp for more cutting.

I have had mine for at least 8 years, and not sharpened the blade yet, only stepped with the leather.

Can not say the same for my Vagabond. I can get it shaving sharp and it stays that way, until SUDDENLY it is not. 😜

DAY 3

So a sad day yesterday, it was my father in-law's funeral, but a nice way to remember his life, talking to his friends and the family, having a huge number of photos on a slide show and 16 hour play list of his favourite music, compilation of both painstakingly created by my wife.

Typical of a wake, there was too much food and drink, so this morning some calming lemon balm leaf tea... harvested by the Micra, before heading to the office.

God bless you dad, I'll look after your little girl always xxx (my wife and best friend)

Day 3

My favorite implement on the Micra, the Pick/File!

Great for tracing out wires on a panel, picking a chunk of meat from between a tooth gap, and then digging gunk from inside a slip joint liner or under your finger nails.  The file is long enough to make the working edge of a nail smooth with only a couple passes.

It is darn near ideal for what ever its actual purpose.

@ Gra_Farmer - pass on a nice supportive hug to your bride and my sincere condolences!😢.  Loosing a parent is a rough spot in the road, thank you for your efforts to smooth that series of bumps for her and the kids.

@ MTSAK - In my house back in the day, that would heard or smelled by awl and a HARTY INVITATION to get back up and enjoy the party.
Today even if I hide such sweats, when I get a hankering for niibble, no problem I live alone… NOPE, take the bag from my hiding spot, and WHAT?  It’s been open!  I did do that, inspect and find ONE! only ONE piece…  🙃 really

Day 3

Put some towels in the laundry and one came out with an errant string hanging off the edge. It was about half the length of the towel, so now I’m worried that it’s unraveling.   Snipped it off with the scissors.

Scissors are a must-have on my multitool, and the Micra has good scissors.

Home with 2 sick kids today, but I did use the scissors to open a bag of my secret candy after the kids all went to bed (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240503/1b2518e0fea03263408893fd772dbfbe.jpg)

Ha!  I remember hiding candy too     Great pic

(https://emoticons.datahamster.com/sad.gif)  As a father, my greatest comfort would be knowing that my daughter had someone to love and to look out for her.  He can rest at peace

Hope they're feeling better today!

So a sad day yesterday...
I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

Another great day, y'awl!

Day 3

I had plans to compare and contrast old and new Micra scissors' performance on paracord. But shockingly, a piece of my eBay tat (as Tasky might call it) wound up selling. So I had to cut a piece of paper to make into a shipping label. The Micra scissors handled the paper pretty dang well.

DAY 4

So at start of the home build, started with a door through a party wall where we have permission to reside nextdoor while the builders destroy and rebuild.

The Micra was used to cut away the old dial-up internet copper cable, and for this it works very well.... I'll do a scissors cut montage during the challenge.

 :)

As requested, the ducklings, the poor guinea pigs were kicked out of the house...must check on them as they were taken outside...

The ducks are Pekin ducks, we believe that out of the five, only one is a girl...thus there will be three duck dinners at some point...

Another easy task for my Micra.

Obviously a little bit slower than getting out a Free series blade or package opener, but the extra two seconds didn’t really affect my life too much.

Still managing fine using just the Micra.

I thought it would mean funny, like comedy-generating.

That's something else I had to look up.  I am into etymology - as opposed to entomology, which I am not into.

"Comedogenic" derives from the Latin "comedo" meaning glutton.  Presumably, gluttons get pimples from their gluttony.  If that is true, I am the exception.  In English, comedo now means a blackhead or whitehead.

As for "comedy", it comes from the Greek kōmos meaning "revel, carousal, merry-making, festival".

Similar, but different.

Okay, maybe I am into entomology.  I took this pic with the magnifier on an Explorer Plus.

Now, back to the glorious Micra . . .   .

Pssst, hey, Leatherman Tool Group! Look at this!
Is that a Rev package opener transplanted into a Micra? I can see such a thing working!

The blue is hard to see, but the rule markings are much clearer
Nicely done! :like: One downside to the Lexan is despite looking cool, it makes the ruler much more difficult to use.

Speaking of Lexan...

Day 5

I finally got to the promised compare and contrast.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

The blue Lexan did much worse on intact paracord. Its scissors required five or six passes, as opposed to the two or three for the newer green Micra. I'm chalking that up to the huge age difference between the two. The blue Lexan is awlmost certainly overdue for some sharpening.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

It handled the guts a little better. That piece of yellow paracord will likely make another appearance before the challenge wraps up.

I have two young children that love playing in bathrooms  :dunno:.... so first job of the day is fitting a new toilet seat....not a glamorous task for the Micra, but has handled it very well for a small tool.

Day 6

The Evolution of my Pocket Tool

My first pocket tool was a Buck 505 that I purchased at the Base Exchange in the 80’s.  I worked in a large computer room, and I needed a knife to open countless paper boxes we used for all of our daily printouts. Back then, the Air Force was pretty strict about not carrying anything in your pockets that would make your uniform pockets bulge even the slightest bit (including your keys). That’s why I went with such a small knife, and it served me faithfully for many years.  I broke the tip off of the blade while working on my car one day, but I continued to use it with a broken tip for years. Note: in the pic, the blade looks new because I recently sent it in to Buck to get the blade replaced.

In the early 90’s, I retired my Buck and replaced it with a Victorinox Classic that I received as swag from a WordPerfect vendor at an industry conference.  Swag in those days was pretty nice! I was no longer opening boxes in a base-level computer room, so the much lighter and thinner blade of the Classic was fine.  I really fell in love with the scissors and nail file – trimming my nails was a primary job of that tool.  You can tell by the pic that I carried and used it for a long time.

In ’97, or maybe it was ’98 – I am horrible with dates, someone at work was passing out Leatherman Micras.  I didn’t think I needed it, but what the hell, it was free.  I started using it instead of my Classic, and I was blown away.  The scissors were much better than my Classic, and I loved the extra tools which were all much sturdier than the Classic.

I carried that Micra for about 20 years!  Honestly, it’s a miracle that I didn’t lose it.  It fell out of my pocket at the beach TWICE!  I remember running around the surf with my friends and spotting a half buried Micra in the sand… I picked it up, then realized that it was my Micra that had popped out of my pocket.  And because I don’t learn my lessons well, I dropped it in shallow water on another day... I quickly spotted it underwater due to the sun's reflection on the stainless steel before it was buried by the surf.  I even used the blade to perform “minor surgery” on myself to remove the mother-of-all splinters.  The blade is still stained from the flame I used to sterilize it.

I retired that original Micra in 2018.  Since then, I have been carrying the one I have been sharing in all of the other pics.  I have also purchased several other Micras, but none of those were daily carries.

Good stuff, sir.  I prefer the Classic's scissors over Micra's, mostly for detail work like cleaning up skin boo boos, but that is wholly a  subjective thing.  It is fun to see someone carry the same knife/SAK/MT for many years, as I frequently switch things up just to keep it fresh.

It looks like the Buck 505 is discontinued.

Thank you  :hatsoff:

You can still get a 505 in Buck's custom shop  :tu: : https://www.buckknives.com/custom-knife/customizable-505-knight-knife/?sku=CKS505

On the scissors, yeah, I might be in the minority on my preference of Micra scissors over Vic scissors.  I think that's mainly due to my primary use of them (trimming my nails).  I also prefer the ergonomics of holding them like real scissors instead of using your thumb like on Vic's.

I think that's mainly due to my primary use of them (trimming my nails).

I carry a Victorinox nail clipper.  I can't stand fingernails sproinging all over the bathroom or house when you cut them indoors, so I EDC the nail clipper and use it solely outside.

The Micra scissors are no doubt more ergonomic.  Like "real" scissors.  And better for cutting stuff like plastic bags, paper, etc.

DAY 5

Managing the children this morning, and they wanted to do rock painting, having the stainless Micra, I definitely needed a little colour.

I blued the words, and blacked the rule markings (I did try yellow first, but it didn't stand out)

The blue is hard to see, but the rule markings are much clearer

Day 6
Crab?

The Air Force was pretty strict about not carrying anything in your pockets that would make your uniform pockets bulge even the slightest bit (including your keys).
The Navy was sort of like that, but their concern was primarily cigarette packs in shirt pockets and Copenhagen et. al. cans in back pockets.

Day 6

Here's the little red Micra that belonged to Mrs. FX again. I'll be carrying it more than I thought, as a way to keep her close to me...she passed away yesterday. It should acquire a fob tomorrow, as fobs make extraction from pockets easier.

So early I know, but a cider is called for....the Micra understands and doesn't judge me....

You are very welcome!

Thank you to all for the condolences and well wishes. It's been very difficult, but I'll persevere. (In fairness, though, I chose the red Micra for her.)

Day 7

The red Micra acquired a fob early in the morning of Day 7.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

It was used to cut what I thought was a workable length, and then to cut a slightly longer length.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

However, the green Micra, a Signal, and a Bic were needed for the finish work.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

This fob wasn't my best work, so I might make another.

Micra helped me open an Amy's brand organic, vegan pizza.  They are pretty yummy if you are into that kind of thing.

That is looking very good to me, 47 hours in to my 72 hour fast and the box looks good enough to eat too...

In all honesty, I have not had a pizza in 9 years....and it's been 14 years since I have had fried chicken (KFC).... McDonald's at least 20 years.....what have I been doing with my life

what have I been doing with my life

If you are fasting, you are doing something glorious and worthy of praise.  I fasted away 60 lbs.  Then, being a genius, I stopped fasting and gained it back.  So being a double-genius, I have started fasting again - between 18 and 22 hours per day - though my long is around your 47 hour mark.  Also got a Signos constant glucose monitor to incentivize compliance, because I can see what swallowing does to my blood sugar and insulin, which is the key to this whole game.  Well done, sir.

Went digging in to where my ISA Micra and coin had been residing for the last couple of years, and couldn't find them for a pic.  I know right where they had been .
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm guessing that I might have moved them to a safer spot.  So safe that I forgot where.

Oh well.  Had this one handy and we thought we'd stop by and say hello.

A closer look at the two Zippo lighters I received from FarmerX to forward to my son who collects lighters mostly Zippos.

These are two fine specimen!

The one on the right is engraved with LHA-5 image and via followup with FarmerX he did serve on this ship.

The Black Crackle has seen use, but the Case is perfect!

Thank you again Dan, and when😉 I finally pass these along I will let you know is comments. 👍. When?

The MICRA SMALL FLAT BLADE was involved with some fine tuning on a radio chassis I have been fiddling with for a friend.

Day 9
The Micra got some good use today.  Opened up a new lighter, then cut some firestarter.  All to make some good coffee.

As an aside, I finally decided to try a new pot that I had been given over a year ago.  After one use decided I don’t like it, and will be going back to my trusty old Evernew Small Pasta Pot.

Day Ten

Tried a task today that I didn’t think the Micra would cope with. Twisting a fastener with the “large” flathead, which I expected to be too narrow. Luckily, it was fine.

Like so many of my jobs on nights, it was done one-handed, above head height, and with only a headtorch for light.

It’s slightly easier with the package opener on the P2 or P4, but perfectly manageable with the Micra.

 DAY 10

So today....posting a little later than intended.... morning started with me waking up with start, and wondering if I turned the IBC off last night when I was filling up the watering can for the ducklings, before bringing them up...

...as you can clearly see, I didn't....and lost 800 litres of water, the Micra scolded me.

Now with the ducklings out....the Micra supervised to ensure I did it correctly..

....i went to work, as I had a 2 hour drive to get to my first meeting at 8am, and then another hour drive to my next site meeting at 10am.....I didn't take pictures as to busy, but I am reshaping 1.2km of water course for a project on adaptive management...drove back home only to find the ducklings are turning white, as their adult feathers are starting to develop ...the children are growing up so fast *sob*

Hello Awl
I am a bit late with my day 9 pic.
There were more airplanes on day 9 with the dreaded security checks so valuable treasures left at home. Then my   last flight to my home town was cancelled and we had to go to Auckland and get bussed back home . Such fun.
Anyway a blue plastic coated Micra today.  Not sure the point of the cover other than collecting gunk.

Day 10

Busy day, 😌 but not cutting, no scissors, not filing, no cap lifting, really boring.

Then joined a group at a local winery, outdoors concert, wine and other beverages and pizza.   Along with folding chairs.

First, the pizza was not fully cut, the big stockman handled that…

Then one of the ladies unfolding her chair, snagged her wrist watch, and the band pin popped off.

The MICRA  medium flat blade, fit perfectly and inserted and guide the pin into its hole on the watch case.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Sorry, no pictures at the scene, many thought me weird for having a HUGE KNIFE, in my pocket and then more so for the tiny tool to repair a watch band.

So I slid my chair down the way for a better view of the country music band. May not associate with those folk again.  🙄

 Did you get flack for having the slipjoint?

I think I’ve noticed that recently Leatherman has become more socially acceptable than Victorinox.    A month ago I was at work and someone brought some pastry for themselves. It ended up being more than enough to share, and the coffee stirrer wasn’t cutting it

So of course I said, “I’ve got something better to cut with”, and one of the ladies said “oh do you have a Leatherman?!”

I said “Swiss Army, it’s similar “ as I pulled out my Pioneer X.  I thought that the “warning” about a Leatherman did avoid alarming people, but the SAK was side eyed a little bit.

It seemed that people are more used to Leatherman than SAK nowadays.

What do you awl think?  :multi:

That's an interesting assertion. I've never been specifically asked for either, but I've been able to break out SAKs in very mixed company with little worry. I guess that when you open up a screwdriver or scissors, that's somehow a little more socially acceptable. Carrying a fixed blade in stoopid Michigan, not so much. :twak:

The 2D Phillips was a little more up to this job than the flathead was. In fairness, I did break out a dedicated screwdriver, but that was solely in the interest of speeding up the process.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

The Micra lacks a tool that is suitable for bending the ends of the wire. But if you're in no hurry and don't treat it too roughly, it could handle every other aspect of this particular job.

No flack, more surprise!  The fact that I had a sharp, and it was larger than most.

The Micra was small, and again a side eye why this old fart had a neat kinda gadget.

Unknown, was my shoulder bag, carried a LM Bond, and as Buck 112 Slim Select.

Day 11 of 30:
Used the nail file to smooth out my nails after trimming them, but there are no pictures. This evening my daughter wanted some mandarin oranges for a snack but couldn't get the pop top can open and I wasn't much help because I closed my right index finger in the car door somehow yesterday evening . I had the micra in my pajama pants pocket, so I handed it to her to use to pry the tab up while I snapped a picture. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240512/383a3e1b0d7bd36cb22273a0ee9e5828.jpg)

That looks yummy

Day 9 of 30:
Rode in the pocket all day until I needed to open this bag of ice to put in the ice "maker." it quit working a while back, and after fixing it a few times, I gave up and have just been filling it with bagged ice.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240510/a438a1fcfc6179b4ac8a7c6c844f38ae.jpg)

That sign is hilarious. I bet the lunch was tasty, too!

Today was a suit and tie day.
Believe it or not, in my awlmost 46 years on this Earth, I have never worn a suit. A U.S. Navy dress uniform is the closest I've ever come to that.

I forgot I had this Micra like tool with a SHEFFIELD label.
And it has a can opener in place of the tweezers. Good call!

It's been a crazy busy day, clearing the home.....so much stuff..... almost done.

The day started with cutting a plastic tag off my little girls bag, before she went to grandma's.

Then getting old futons into the car to take to the tip....these are bulky and heavy, so I cut them in half with the Micra, this was hard work and involved cutting/sawing/stabbing....and then ripping by hand... difficult to do, but the Micra did it.

Typically the tip bulk bin was full, so I had to bring it back....ahhhh

Then getting old futons into the car to take to the tip

The environmentally-friendly thing to do is to throw those old futons into a lake, river or forest.  This is called "direct recycling", and cuts out the environmentally-unfriendly middleman.  Plus, by direct recycling you are saving space at the garbage dump for your fellow citizens to use.  Its a win-win.  Try it!

Day 12

The key ring is a feature, they say.

I find that to be a double edged sword. Ever since we did the Victorinox Classic SD Challenge, I’ve had mine on my keys. That has made it easy to forget I have it on me. It’s also why I tend not to have it on me whenever I have the chance. These car keys nowadays are becoming more bothersome to carry in the pocket. Because they are bulky.

Day 12

Ventured away from the house for dinner, had a craving BBQ, and since I forgot to take the ribs out of the freezer I had two options, go without or go out!

I chose the later😁

The Micra knife was used to clean the last rementents of meat from the bones. Handled with little trouble.  Of course, sauce on my fingers made it impossible to take a photo with the phone and the Micra needed a wipe down when I arrived home.

Picture is after the dinner events while drying off.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

For the record, IMHO, my ribs are more saucy and flavorful, as my choice uses a dry rub, on the heavy side.  Burnt Ends not bad, as well as the Corn Bread side dish.  My fault, can not complain.

Day 12 bonus

My micra was capable of prying out the smaller piece.  Next, I used the scissors to cut through the blue baling twine.  The last three or so threads got wedged between the blades, binding up the scissors. Maybe if I had held them or the twine better , the scissors would have cut through.  Next, the scissors cut right through the piece hanging from the handle, no problem.

:iagree: I tend to think of them as being "just there." If they're on something that sees regular carry, I find it much more useful as an attachment point for some paracord.

Had a craving BBQ...
Now you have me wondering what effect BBQ sauce would have on a carbon blade.

@Farmer X - my grinder is a Wilfa Svart. I paid roughly £100 for it and it’s still going strong after at least eight or nine years. A little noisy, but not too bad.
It’s paired with an Aeropress and Prismo cap, and with good beans I can make better coffee than machines costing £1000 or more.

Day 14

Tweezers attempted to retrieve a tiny screw from a crevice, and failed, a magnetic tipped screw driver was successful.   Not 100% tool’s error, about 60% the large finger operator and poor approach angle.

With a few snack bites to ease the humbling event.

Powernoodle Day 15

I used the Micra to open these pitted Medjool dates from Amazon.  These are more spendy than other dates, but they are so plump and soft - almost wet - that they may be worth it.  Other brands are smaller and firmer, with some dates being almost hard and desiccated.  Dates are the fruit of the date palm tree, which is native to Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and North Africa.  They have a myriad of health benefits, and despite being very sweet with a creamy, maple and caramel flavor, they generally do not raise blood sugar and make an excellent dessert for those engaged in the battle against corpulence.

Thank you for the insight Power Noodle!

Would seem the dates would be much more beneficial than the poor choice I made last night of a handful (small) PeanutButter M&Ms 🙄

1 - 2#  bag to be delivered Thursday (tomorrow)!👍

Do you refrigerate once open?

Actually not a bad price if comparing with my goto M&Ms.!!!

Day Fifteen

It’s only Wednesday, and the Micra has been with me to five hospital appointments and one supermarket trip so far this week.

Paired with a Bond most of the time, but the Micra has always been enough. Very impressed with it at the half way point.

Day 14 of 30:
There were no uses yesterday, and I forgot to post this picture. Got busy after work with kid's baseball game and dinner. My Knafs Lander 1 and new fidget spinner/magnetic clicker along with the Micra(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240515/031c54752d388c923af8a980ebdbea7e.jpg)

My grinder is a Wilfa Svart.
I might just have to look for one. But I think an old-school hand cranked job might be more appealing to me.

Trying to open an emergen-c failed halfway.
Tear notch fail, it seems. I've had way too many of those.

Micras with polycarbonate shells...wear way too easily.
Indeed they do. My blue one has a little wear. I probably won't go out of my way to pick up another polycarbonate Micra unless it's NOS.

With a few snack bites to ease the humbling event.
Now you have me wanting peanut butter M&Ms! And of course I went to the store last night...

Another great day, y'awl! :tu:

Day 15

The "Melt n'Dip" packaging had recipes. I used the Micra's scissors to cut the cards.

Then, with only minor difficulty, I used the blade to put a hole in them.

With the addition of a little paracord, I have a recipe file. Now I just have to remember where I put them.

DAY 15

Another crazy and expensive build day.... builders didn't want to take a 5 x 4 metre steel roller shutter door down....its 4 metres up in the air, so don't blame them...realised late last night that the build cannot progress without the roller shutter door down....ahhh

....so some YouTube videos late into the night, reversing a roller shutter door installation, armed with the Micra to cut and splice ropes...and a 5am start, I managed to get a 1.5 ton off the ceiling....I managed to convince the builders (3 hours later) it was a good idea (just to note at this point in time I didn't think it was a good idea!!!), and it was done....bloody hell that was frightening

The unpainted area shows the outline of the roller shutter door
