Mind you Barry I'm going to need persuading that the Navy Camouflage Huntsman that Vic have just brought out should have a wood saw. A harpoon surely? :rofl:Maybe the new aircraft carriers are being fitted with a wooden hull to compensate for some of the other rising costs?

Now, if only they would replace that hook with a Philips on some future model, and they could put the Philips vs corkscrew debate to bed as well.
C'mon, FoBo...... :pok:Oh, I want to join in, but I do have some family obligations that may prevent me from participating.
Count me in! I may have to get some special scales for this challenge, maybe some turkeys or pumpkin pie...... :DTurkey or pumpkin pie...we are entering the best season of the year. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year...family and great food...no expectations, just fun!
30 days with a Huntsman or Fieldmaster? Gee, you could have at least made it something challenging. I'm in. How about including the Mountaineer as well, in case anyone thinks they need a file more than a saw?
I'd like to limit it to the Huntsman since the badge in the works is going to be a Huntsman badge.
 I have a Fieldmaster myself and love that Philips screwdriver.
:mail:
It’s here!
I like the corkscrew. Not that I drink that much wine, but I really like the micro-driver that can be carried in the corkscrew. I have a Fieldmaster myself and love that Philips screwdriver.
Fieldmaster is one I would seek out. I'd even trade my Huntsman for one. The corkscrew just digs into my hand and the Philips make it a much smoother tool overall. Plus I use the Philips more. One of these days...but yet, I say that about a lot of different knives these days...
That is one of the items I will be looking for tomorrow at the gun and knife show. Seems like a no-brainer not to have.I like the corkscrew. You can order one from the MTO store and get 10% off all orders through the end of the month. :pok:That is one of the items I will be looking for tomorrow at the gun and knife show. Ahh the Huntsman, one of my favourites, pencil me in for now but will know better nearer the time :tu:Oh my...that’s a lot of Huntsmen. :like:
I'm not buying the micro screwdriver for all my huntsmen though, would cost a fortune..they can have one and share it :D
All lined up ready to go (maybe)

Borg, you are now my official hero. :salute:
:D, I was tempted to have it sent back to the factory to rectify it but i think i will just keep it as a curiousity :tu:
Thanks guys :salute:You found more! I think you need to check your glove box. :tu:
I found 3 more Huntsmen/mans, my camo ones that were kept separate, i also found 2 with files instead of saws..but we wont count those ones :pok:
The strange thing is i found another odd looking one that has some weird looking piece of metal where the corkscrew should be :dunno: i'm thinking its some sort of factory mistake >:D

On the bright side you won't need to buy a small screwdriver for it will you eh? :rofl:That's so true
You found more! I think you need to check your glove box. :tu:Just out of curiosity i did go and check, and found a Spartan
Nice collection Borg! :like: :tu: :tu:Thanks Vicman :salute:
I'm getting ready to buy a secondhand inlaid logo BSA model Huntsman (which is really a Fieldmaster) to replace the standard Fieldmaster I trashed during my teen years. Does the BSA "Huntsman" and Fieldmasters count?Where you able to get your Huntsman/Fieldmaster???
Okay everyone, I think I have everyone accounted for.

Please excuse me if I've missed anyone in this list. Let me know and we'll be all set for a 1 November launch!
Nice start to the Huntsman Challenge. Coming straight out of the Spirit Challenge this will be very interesting and I had got to the point of really wanting a normal SAK in my pocket. But I've been out and about for a couple of days so I've only managed to pick up my Huntsman this evening. Now I have to check out this Navy camo!
And I've picked up a Navy Camouflage Huntsman. Normally I really don't do camo but the idea of a wood saw on the open waves is so spectacularly mad I just had to get myself one for the Challenge.
And here we are opening some post Day One
Day 01 :Oh boy, that would be a great place to have a hike! Glad to see you on this Challenge! :hatsoff:

Got out for a day hike today, before the weather turned nasty. No uses for the trusty Huntsman, but It sure was nice having this capable SAK in my pocket. :tu:

Thanks, Ray. Wouldn't miss it!
(Although, I'm afraid many of my entries may start to look alike: I've got more trips planned.)
:like: Nice pic Winona!Thanks!!
A great start into an excellent challenge guys :like:Well, a Huntsman is a lot cheaper money wise than a Spirit X :tu:
...I should not follow it though. Last time I did that I've ended up with a new Spirit X. Wifey didn't like that too much :D

Basic? :think:Yes, that is how I meant it...compared to the bigger ones ie 7 layer and bigger.
...
True, it's not a 10-layer do-all (that won't fit in my pocket comfortably), but I wouldn't call it 'basic'. Me, I'm calling it 'ideal'. :climber:
Oh, and Ray, this challenge might be a good time to earn your Hook Badge......just sayin'...... :pok::iagree: Have thought about that. :tu:
Basic?
I don't know if I'd call the Huntsman 'basic'.
Thinking back to the original SAK designs, the Huntsman ups the game considerably with scissors, a saw, corkscrew, pen blade, and the mighty hook. :tu: :tu:

I think Barry and a few others hooligans are cooking up a Swiss Champ challenge for the new year (2019). I don't have a Swiss Champ, but I'm going to get one for the challenge. I'm actually dreading that challenge because the Champ just seems so cumbersome to me.
But, who knows? Maybe I'll learn something new and develop a new 'ideal'.......nah.....no way......
Matt.....I sense you want to get a Huntsman.....maybe even *need* a Huntsman......Especially in cargo pants...which is basically all that I will wear now. The pockets are just ideal. And you can get them in shorts or long pants. :tu:
They fit in your pocket rather nicely. :pok:

Day 02 ::like: :tu:
This awl is nice and sharp, almost a third blade. When it seems reasonable, I like using the awl in lieu of a knife blade, just to save the knives' edges for more delicate work. Opened up a package for Mrs Nix.
Day 02 :That’s a good ideal on the awl, and I hate getting that glue residual from the tape on the main blade. Will give that a try! :tu:

I use the Huntsman hook to get stones out of tire treads.
:like:Hey 19 :salute:
We found some fun after all! First, we got a bag of feed for the Sheepdogs and I used the small blade to cut the box open. From the time I was a stockboy in the mid 80's, I have always used the small blade to open boxes to keep from damaging the contents inside. Next, while taking the dogs out for a walk, I came across a branch that had grown in our path. I think I went over 20 years before I used that saw, but once I did I've used it all the time! Lastly, I used the caplifter for a refresher!
:like:Hey 19 :salute:
Nice work today, guys! :tu:
DAY 3...along with our other favorite I see...
Had out the huntsman to clean the pipe today :multi:
Nice pic there S19. Maybe you can help me understand what you can do with the Huntsmans wood saw afloat ? :think:Saw a hole into the hull, naturally. You couldn't use cannon otherwise.

But what's that Navy Camouflage about?
Does the Navy need a saw?
Anyways, I like it :D
Though, this has to wait a bit :-\

Back in the 1950s and 1960s, the catalogs used to advertise the saw as being able to cut rope like a serrated blade. I've tried with with saws on SAKs ranging from the late 1950s until today, and none work as well as a serrated blade. Maybe the classic hemp rope, but not modern synthetics. But anyway, I like the camo as well. Almost bought a regular Camo model for the challenge before deciding on Silvertech.

Day 03 :WOW! Always thought of the Appalachian Trail on our side...
I planned to get out for a good hike today. My goal was a section of the CDT (continental divide trail) that spans from Mexico in the South to Canada in the North.
I knew there was a chance of some cold and rainy weather, but Old Man Winter crawled down from his aerie and gave me a smack in the face.
I got hit with a serve storm, rain turned to snow, and a cold, slashing wind cut me to the bone. I'll confess I was a bit underdressed and might have weathered the storm a bit better if I'd had a few more bits of suitable clothing. So, underdressed and a bit cold, but not totally unprepared, I had my Huntsman with me:
I was out for a shorter walk than anticipated, which makes me a bit cranky, but it was a fun day out and a nice reminder that Old Man Winter is coming for a visit, and soon.j

I'm glad you are safe my friend! In a way, your situation is exactly what packing a SAK is all about! The CDT is On my list of trails to hike. The CDT is on next years list to mountain bike/hike that trail with my son. Looking forward to it myself.Day 03 :

I'm a lefty, so the Huntsman scissors saved me many times in high school and later on!

Day 4.What beautiful countryside, have a great day!
Been out for a walk. Mushrooms finally pop up everywhere after some rain. Not much to do today besides using eyeglass screwdriver for...well...eyeglasses.
I've lost track of the times this corkscrew has opened a bottle of wine or undone a knot!I can....
Some cracking pics here peeps. Really enjoying the outdoor / "refreshments" theme.
So.... Day 4 I've been out for a bike ride and I've only just picked up my Jelly Red Huntsman but I doubt we'll get up to much today. So here we are with Navy Camouflage kickstand posing

Can you imagine trying to find a sailor who fell overboard wearing that uniform? At zero-dark-thirty on a stormy night?
But at least they look cool.
Day 04 :
Windy and stormy day here, so I was inside for much of the day.
Mrs Nix reminded me that it would be her birthday in a few months...or so...and, as such, she would like a pie.
I rummaged through the fridge and freezer and found the requisite components:
Blueberries and a bag of frozen rhubarb from 2002:
We had a lump of pie dough in the freezer from.....recently, yeah, recently...... This got defrosted, thawed, and rolled out to make the pie's "coffin". Huntsman did the honors and created a few steam vents:
The blueberry-rhubarb pie is now cooling. Mrs Nix said she may share her birthday pie.... I sure hope so!

I used the saw to take a cutting from a Gumbo Limbo tree and to scrape some of the bark down to the cambium layer so the cutting will take root.

Nice to see that Naval Camo Huntsman pulling KP duty, FB! :like:
No action for us today so a vanity pic!
Day 05 :Very nice
My buddy and I are going on a hunting trip later in the week (Wed through Fri). We'll be camping in a Forrest Service cabin and won't have internet access (or cell service :)). The cabin is close to the roadless (no motorized vehicles permitted) area we will be hunting. Spent a good bit of the day organizing gear and making a list of stuff I need to get (mostly food and some Li batteries). So not much use for the Huntsman today.
However, a Winter storm is rolling in and temps are dropping. This prompted Mrs Nix to request a pot of my famous 'hot chocolate'. If there were a recipe, it would call for a splash of vanilla extract. The Huntsman came to the rescue when the dang  'safety seal' needed to be removed.

Evening Chaps, I have only just picked up this post after work Day 07 so I'll aim to get some daylight pics tomorrow. In the meantime we've opened the post and have a bonus art shot for Extra Temptation
Parcel hook in use...moving future fire kindle to a dry location before usage...
Day 05 :

Great use of the awl -- and keeps your blades clean! :like:Something I learned from you...I listen...now remembering is a different story!
Reason #117 to carry a SAK to work.
Nice shot, Barry. Whatever was in that can, it probably need a couple shots of Tabasco.........
G'day.
Just a reminder that I won't have internet access for the next few days. The Huntsman and I will be out in the mountains. I'll post up my Day 7 and later photos if and when I get back. If all goes well, I should reappear on Day 10.
Keep up the great work! :salute:

Misty this morning so here's some atmosphere

When you order a couple of slices and they don't cut them all the way it's not a problem for the Huntsman

I hope your aunt is ok Ray. I used the small blade to cut the seal from this jar of peanut butter.
Day 08Thank you Sir, bad a$$,brutal, magnificent SAK.
Some daylight pics to stoke the fires >:D
DAY 7Yea Coastie, keep it up with the 110 photos and Huntsman may end up in the knife draw
Only thing I used was the blade, cutting a somewhat too long bootlace (when I replaced the laces on my Rockies, I think I got one for a long boot, not a short boot like those are).Interesting and cool model collection idea! Huntsman is guarding them? :tu:
Messing around with a few model wreckers in my collection for this photo. The left is a new Tomica that came out this summer and represents a Hino Profia with a Century 1040SDU used by the Yohohama Fire Bureau's Super Rangers Urban Search and Rescue team: the second is a vintage Tomica from the late '70s called "American Wrecker" that represents a Peterbilt 379 with a Holmes unit, possibly the mighty, 40 Ton 850.

Taking Huntsman formal tonight, may need the screwdriver or small blade (which I avoid using to keep like new₩.....
Well done Barry I just wouldn't be without T&T myself. Post opening duty here but been out and about. Had my lunch parked in a dry ford and snapped the later pic at home because the patterning on the wood trellis looked similar to the camouflage. I am still loving this Huntsman :drool:Well it is a nice one for sure!

Day 07 :Welcome to Gods country! :tu:
I'm a few days behind here, it's been fun reviewing the thread and catching up! Nice work guys. :tu:
I was out in the woods and didn't have cell reception or internet access. I did however take my cell phone and snapped a few pictures along the way. And of course the Huntsman accompanied me at awl times!
I'll try to catch up with a few posts from the previous few days, starting with DAY 07:
My hunting buddy and rented a Forrest Service cabin out in the mountains. We got lucky with the timing: a major storm had dropped a bunch of snow in the area. We drove in as the storm tailed off.....or seemed to. It actually snowed on and off days 7 and 8.
We drove in early and dumped our gear in the cabin. Here's a view from the cabin porch:
If you think it looks cold, you'd be right. Temps varied from -12ºC to -2ºC. Ahhhh, Fall in Montana......
We geared up and headed out to look for sign of Elk. It didn't take long to find some nice tracks in the fresh snow. Finding Elk was a different matter......
From the photos you can see it is obviously hilly terrain. I think it's hard to convey a sense of how steep some of these spots are. I t was easy to work up a good sweat while climbing up. Then, trying to be slow and still, we chilled down easily. It was hard to stay hydrated--the water in our water bottles froze up!
While there was plenty of Elk sign in the area, is often led us into think timber. This area has suffered from beetle infestations. As a result there is a lot of 'blowdown'--dead trees that have pitched over. The long legged Elk seem to know how to use these barriers to their advantage.
After working our way (often more noisily than one would prefer) through some of this terrain, we felt we had started to figure out where the Elk were moving. Foolish us.
Cold, wet, and tired, we retreated back to the cabin, built a fire, and spread out our gear to dry off. The Huntsman's scissors got used to open up some packets of tea.
Day 08 :Ok, I’m home sick now. That last photo makes it all worth while. Great post and photos. :hatsoff:
We thought the snowstorm was breaking up the evening before, but we got another 2" of snow over night.
While the additional snow made hiking, staking, and climbing a little trickier and tiring, it did let us determine which tracks were more than 12 hours old. We felt sure we'd be able to find some Elk now.
The Huntsman is sitting up on the snow several inches above the track, so the track here is actually bigger than it appears in the photo. But you can see it is fresh!
Sure enough, we soon found a couple Elk....legal Elk...
However, we were in thick timber and didn't have a good shot. Neither of us wanted to wound an animal with a poor or ineffective shot. We tried to be sneaky and wait for an opportunity. An opportunity that never came.....
Obviously if you are seeing Elk in thick timber and can actually see Elk you are close to the Elk. If you are close to Elk they can see you and hear you. We had been working up wind, so I don't think they smelled us (or we never would have seen them), but they became suspicious about our presence and disappeared like ghosts through the timber.
After spooking this set of Elk, we decided to climb up a little higher and see if we could locate other Elk in a spot where we might have better shooting. Another tough slog up through some deep snow.
When we got up high, the snow was up over our knees. And all the tracks were partially filled with snow, so we knew they were at least 12 hours old, maybe older. At this point we were pretty tired and cold. We retreated back to the cabin where we made a fire and heated up some lunch.
After drying out a bit, we headed up another drainage to higher ground, again. Once again, the snow got deep and the climbing got hard. And up at the top, there was scant sign of Elk. We now figured that this storm had dumped enough snow up high to push the Elk down to better food sources. A hard way to learn that information, but it sure was a nice hike, and the sun had finally emerged!
Ok, I’m home sick now.
...the Elk outwitted you !
In Florida right now, with the grandkids, and helping out my mom, who is doing better! :tu:Ok, I’m home sick now.
Where are you now? And where was home? And why aren't you here?
Wyoming is not as crowded and one of the few states left where nobody says anything when they see a revolver on your hip when out in the open.
Thanks, guys. I'm never sure how many extraneous photos and stories to post in the middle of a challenge thread, so tell me to turn down the volume if I'm getting too wordy. I'll post Day 08 here shortly....
What state??? :whistle:Wyoming is not as crowded and one of the few states left where nobody says anything when they see a revolver on your hip when out in the open.
Wyoming is one of my favorite states. But, please, FFS, don't tell anyone about it!
Shhhhhhhh........... Awl photos were taken in Southern California....just outside San Diego. :pok: :dunno:

Doesn't take much to outwit me. :-[
Even trout manage to trip me up........
Nix, don't change anything!! My son, Spartan 19, is home on leave so we had our Thanksgiving dinner a little early since I'm working that day too. For the first time in way too long, I put the corkscrew to its intended purpose.

Day 11At least it isn’t in the house! :tu:
It's been raining very hard all night. At least since around midnight. The good news is that I woke up at 06:20 this morning and remembered to go out and close the windows in the van.
This morning's picture is not of a pond, but of 6 inches of standing water in my driveway. The water had pooled over the sidewalk but we have really good drainage here so I will only have the water in my driveway for a few hours, unless it starts raining again.
:to:Not dirt. Mud, and it's comprised mostly of grass clippings that were floated by the deluge.I don't think there's anything there that would dull my blade. In any case, my knife. My mud. ;)
Alan, did you just stick your knife into the dirt? :dwts:
I almost killed a man for doing that to one on my knives.....once....... :megaslap:

Day 11.
After some house duties we went out for a walk in the woods to our *special place*, a lone bend in the river that flows through our town some kilometers up river.
Found some hornet combs at an old oak.
The river is amazing, need to get a trout fishing permit next year! As we walked home in the beginning darkness a huge flock of crows passed over us. Have never seen so much of them, pic shows only a small part.
Did some whittling, lost it on the way home (sort of a flute, too dark to take a pic)

In the meantime, I used the can opener tip to loosen some Philips head screws on our pellet stove. Turns out that the auger motor is shot.

I quite agree ... but on a practical level shouting "Clear Prop" when you start is much easier than shouting "Clear Airscrew" !
Day 11 :I didn’t see that one coming. Those tough ones is why I only buy them without shells. Great use
Slow day for me, today. Intermittent snow. I mostly stayed inside, catching up on some tasks and chores. No uses for the Huntsman until I stopped to have a little snack.
I used the iPET (integral Pistachio Extraction Tool) to access some tough nuts. The Huntsman handled one and awl with efficiency. :tu:

But, Ray, you have a Huntsman......... :pok:Not to worry...Publix is only 500 yards away from the house...I’m going to be a happy camper! :climber:

DAY 10Here in Orlando, there is no winter, you lucky to get a fall. When I lived in Georgia, you had a change of seasons. Christmas was cold...here in Florida for the last 3 Christmas I drove down to be with the kids and grandkids...Christmas day was spent by many at the beach! Just doesn’t seem like the special day it should be.
 great idea Ray, I just put mine up for the winter
Day 12 and nothing to report but here are a couple of pics with Airscrews (noting the difference between American Aircraft wiring and British Aircraft wiring) and with Aeroplane Engines (Part II) from the same series on the de Havilland Gipsy engines.Thank you, excellent photos, cheers.
Thanks Marko & Wspud much appreciated

DAY 12
Thanks brother! Got the trusty buck today. Used the huntsman to trim a small amount of line today
Opened the Trifexis pill for the dog (dewormer and flea/tick protection) with the scissors, cleaned up a stick I use as a walking staff with the blade and saw (to remove rotted/split parts) and something else, I forgot. I also used the pen blade to open these two trucks which came in the mail. They're both Winross, USA made of 1990s vintage (the Dr. Pepper version is dated 1994). The company's current status I'm unsure of. They still have an active website, but it was only last updated in 2006. I purchased these displayed, but not played with for like $4 each on eBay. But $11 shipping, that's because they're true 1:64, which means big for a truck. Still, it comes in total about what 1 would have cost without the shipping included.Well, I’m loving the Dr. Pepper right off the bat...I have been drinking it since 1967 when we were stationed at Puerto Rico. I wish I had stock in the company with all the money I have spent!
The Diet Doctor Pepper version has an Ford L9000 cab, while the Ford version is an LTL9000.

Day 14 :You are one lucky bunny Nix on so many levels.
Ne'er a truer word, my friend. :tu:
Today I had occasion to be at the air base. There is a small air museum with a number of fine and unusual planes on display. I was particularly drawn to this ol' B-25. The J-variant was used as a strafing-bomber. With eight (8!) .50 cal machine guns, I can imagine it could wreak some havoc.
Naturally the Huntsman had to photobomb the shot......
It's truly humbling to stand in front of one of these small (yes, small) and frail planes and realize that some mighty brave men climbed up into these aircraft to resist the forces of tyranny.

Day 13 :
I decided to take myself out for lunch today.
So I packed up my Safety Orange daypack and headed for the hills.....
It was -4ºC when I started out, but I was dressed in just a long-sleeve Henley shirt and nylon hiking pants. Climbing up into the hills I got sweaty in no time.
I was not hunting, but it is still rifle season. I knew I'd be in some deer and elk country, so a bit of safety gear seemed appropriate. I did come across several sets of deer tracks. Following this set, led to a bedding site:
As I approached the bedding site, I spooked out a Mule deer doe. I didn't get to 'shoot' a photo, but it was fun to find her. Here is her bedding site, well located on a sunny slope, and under a tree:
Hiking on a bit, I climbed up to a hill top where I had nice view:
I hung my pack from a tree to keep it out of the wet and snow.
Here's a tip you guys probably already know, but I'll post it up anyway. I keep a short length of string in my pocket, with a loop at one end. When I stop, it's a simple matter to run the line around a trunk or branch, running the tag end through the loop. With the line now secured to the tree, I tie in a Marline Spike hitch (super simple and quick) and then slip in a tent stake or branch to form a hanger for my pack. This keeps the pack off the damp ground (really important in cold weather, when everything seems to collect moisture) and up at a good working height. The key to this trick is to have the string easily accessible in your pocket; that way you don't have to rummage around in your pack, on the ground, to find the string. The whole hanger is made while the pack is on your back. :tu:
Marlin Spike Hitch video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR61BYTQMwo)
Ok, enough of that. On to lunch:
I brought some rice noodles, a peanut butter packet from an old military ration, and my emergency bottle of Tabasco sauce.
(The camo bag is my food bag. I took the leg off an old pair of fatigues and sewed up the open end where the knee was. The ankle end already had a draw string in place to cinch my 'bag' shut. Makes a great bear bag to hang food in trees....unless you can't find it again at breakfast time...... :-\)
Rice noodles are great, but some peanut butter kicks them up to true greatness! And everything in life is better with Tabasco, right?
I brought my little wood burnings stove along to use in cooking. As I got to my lunch spot, I tried collecting some tinder and kindling.
The Huntsman got used to make small twigs into smaller twigs and shavings. I put a bandana down to keep the shavings from getting lost, keep them dry (drier, anyway) and making it easier to gather them up.
I used a ferro rod to get the fire going. I have to say I really struggled to get a fire going. I don't know if it was the cold or everything was just a bit damp, but it wasn't easy. The thistle tops were the best tinder. They caught a spark quite easily and flamed rah up, but it was tough getting the other materials to catch. I used the Huntsman's saw to cut some sticks into small pieces and collected the sawdust in the bandana. The sawdust plus the thistle tops proved to be the ticket in getting the fire started. Not easy at all though.
Ray Mears makes it all look so simple...... :-\
Once lighted, it got going nicely:

All assembled and heating up my soup:

The view from the lunch room:

Lunch was great. I sat on a rock in the sun enjoying the quiet. Some ravens played overhead, a few chickadees worked the old branches in the tree above me. Of course I burnt my tongue on the hot noodles, but watching a fox run across the opposite hill made it all worthwhile.
The Huntsman's main blade and saw processed some wood. The scissors got used to open food packages. This is why I love the Huntsman: the combination of saw, scissors, and blade. Such useful tools when you are going out to lunch! :tu:
Seem to have misplaced it this evening. Hopefully I'll find it tommorow. Hook and scissor usage today. This photo was from when I packed up some SAKs to ship off on warranty, then informed by a clueless postal worker at a post office I rarely go in that I can't ship a knife in the mail. Bullsmurf! I've shipped (and had the clerk pack) knives at the two other post offices around here all the time without issue, including a quite tactical looking Gerber EZ OUT Skeleton.

To those who flew, fought, and won. :salute:

Yeay...finally used the corkscrew! Have now used all the tools in the Huntsman.
Day 15. From Roger Freemans excellent book of colour photos of the 8th
Day 15 :
Mrs Nix announced that her Jeep's battery was dead. And, sure enough, she was right.
So I changed out the battery for her......

The Huntsman was of no help whatsoever.
Day 15
A spicy, non-alcoholic beverage.
Moved some furniture, and some shelves and photos attached to the wall. Scissors opened my probiotic and some packages. Large blade cut up a box to make a shim level out my worn-out 40-year old desk (unlike the one this computer is on, which is heavy, solid cherry from the 1950s, this particular desk was a cheapo my dad had in grade school). Can opener turned several Phillips screws. Mini screwdriver repaired the display cube for a model car. Hook helped me zip up my parka, by grabbing the bottom zipper so that I could pull the regular zipper up.

Great photos and usages. :like::iagree: :tu:
Right?
I wonder if they were ever shot to help reverse a dive?
Day 13 :That looked like the best lunch time ever :like: :hatsoff:

Day 16
The Huntsman and his beverage
Top photo with the track...what type of animal is it? It looks like it has pads of some sort at the bottom of the track...a cat or fox??? Thanks
Day 16.
Almost forgot about that challenge. Nothing special today, killed some oranges and apples today, no pics though, so a quick and dirty one has to do the job.
Chilled the evening, with beverages from yesterdays package.
Daughter is ill, so outdoortime will be limited the next day.
Day 16 :
Seemed like a good day to stay in and enjoy some coffee and Jaffa cakes. But......we were mysteriously out of Jaffa cakes.....

DAY 13
Out with ol yellar :D
DAY 13Old yella's name is a ________?
Out with ol yellar :D
Jobs done, opened the probiotic with the scissors, repaired the front screen off the gas fireplace (which had popped out of its mount) using the can opener to undo the fixing screw, then reinstall it, and finally, the large screwdriver to pop open the tight latch on the box that holds my leather cleaning stuff. This evening before bed, I moved some furniture and wall hangings, I also used the screwdriver to remove screws.I fondly remember my dad's folding ruler with the little extension brass piece (was yellow not white?)
Most of these tools I used are older than me. The Vise Grips definitely predate Irwin and the big outsource incident, the Lufkin 966 was bought earlier this year as new-old-stock from Farm Bureau (a local feed, farm, and hardware chain). Definitely made prior to 2010, when Lufkin was sold by Cooper Tools to Apex. It's made in the USA, as after Apex got a hold of Lufkin, everything got outsourced to China or Mexico. The smaller Lufkin, a 372 Caliper Rule, is from the 1920s, I think. I bought it earlier in the week. The Zircon stud finder, borrowed from my folks, who have had it since the 1990s (my old green one, a simpler model, is broke). The Belknap Hardware 13 oz. hammer is my great-granddad's, and the drill, a Miller's Falls 2-A, has been in the family 50 years, having been left behind by the previous family when my folks moved here in 1969. I have 2 electric drills (3/8 Craftsman and 1/4 Hitachi) but rarely use them compared to this.

Day 16
Today I adjusted a hidden hinge in mom's China cabinet. The Huntsman is lacking the inline Phillips of the Champion I usually carry, :( but the can opener did the job.

The 18yo Bowmore is great, but will not replace my all tme favourite when it comes to peaty whiskys. Caol Ila Destillers Edition is by far the most tasty I have had. Fruit ans smoke in one glass. Yummy. Looking forward to open the other bottle, Lagavulin Dest.Ed.

Nice G Shock! I had to clean up a mess from one of my Sheepdogs who ate something he shouldn't have. I fashioned a scoop from an old milk carton. They are great watches and after my first gen solar bit the dust after 10 years and wanted another solar and found this Mudman one!
Nice pics Shuya :like: :tu:
Day 18.Nice restaurant! That is a cool looking setup :like:
Cut down cartboard boxes. Next duty is to hang up the birdfeeder and attach the branch I took with me yesterday. Huntsman and zipties for the win.
Might be worth a ziptie badge request?
Cold and misty outside, maybe we will go for a walk in the woods in the afternoon, depending on daughters mood and feelings. Still ill and niggling.
Actually tried the corkscrew on a sneaker lace knot, worked really well. All these years using my teeth.

Day 17:
Mostly quiet day today.
We did received a package of tea from our favorite dealer in Canada. Tea, nothing more, :D

Another lazy Sunday...not! The weather is way to nice to be inside today.

Parade duty today, probably use screwdriver and scizzors mostly.
Day 18 ::like: I'm thinking about making some canvas sheaths as soon as I can get an old Singer treadle we have up and running. I've just got to put on a new belt (old one was dry-rotted, and we have a new one ready to go on) and lube it up.

Planning ahead for the holidays. What do you think of the Black Huntsman and my limited edition brass mini-mag to go with the formal wear for the holiday? I don't usually carry the brass mag light because it is quite a bit heavier than most lights that size.
Oh dear, Barry.
Even Spartan is eating better that that!

OK, the Huntsman, or any 91mm SAK, is not a perfect pairing knife. However, it did the work of a pairing knife fairly well, and a chef's knife......within reason. In addition to massacring a couple of cauliflowers, the Huntsman trimmed some carrots and chopped some celery. I drew the line at dicing onions and resorted to using an 8" chef's knife for speed and convenience.
I'm not officially in this challenge, been away too long so I missed this.Nice Silvertech Ms S!
But… I'm working the night shift now and of course I'm carrying my Huntsman with me.
It's always on my duty belt, love it.

Hook twice (removing a rubber tie-down we use to help keep the gate shut and helping pull my boot on). I also used the scissors to open the probiotic, and the pen blade to open some stuff from today's Walmart trip. Also, did some tinkering with the small screwdriver.Lot of usage today for you! :tu:
I went with the belt sheath today. This isn't your average Zermatt, or the nylon sheath that comes free with some Huntsman versions, but a handmade sheath. I'd bought a pair of 84mms (a Recruit and an Artisan) as well as a Wenger Master, and they came with three of these, each of a different size, and none fit the knives they came with, and the smallest had the belt loop broke. This is the one I use for my 4-5 layer models (Master Gardener, Huntsman, Ranger), and there's another that fits the old 100mm Soldier like a glove. It originally had the Artisan in it (which is currently in Connecticut at Vic getting the scissors repaired, to remove a jerry-rigged repair the original owner did and put a new spring in)
Miles? Is that an American thing? It was a little thing printed on the side of a pack of Marlboro cigarettes. You saved the miles and then looked thru the catalog and picked what you wanted and sent the miles in and you got your item. Think they were 5 miles each....back years ago...may have been state side. I got the SAK and a pack.

Day 23 already.
Did a walk with my girlfriend and daughter to one of the hills surrounding our town above the river. On three of them were old fortifications of the slavic people settling here 1500 years ago. This is one of them, an egg shaped wall and trench of about 50x150m. You can still see some holes in the ground about 5-6m in diameter from dug in houses of that era. The whole thing was abandoned about 1000 years ago when christianization started and a monastery was founded here, the town began to build, silver was found.
Lots of beechnuts to eat, and some chestnuts. Deer is sleeping here too. Many of small depressions with removed debris.
Of course
Day 22
Happy Thanksgiving to all of us in the United States. Happy Thursday to the rest of you. Getting ready for a feast here. Had two smokers going and, at the time of the photo, getting ready to fire up the turkey fryer. The menu included pork belly, two standing rib roasts, a duck, a fried turkey, ham, green beens, grilled asparagus with a coconut dressing, green been casserole, stuffing, mashed summer squash, potatoes with cheese, pumpkin and apple pies, and of course we had cranberry sauce, but it was from a can. My mother's home made cranberry sauce is so much better. I ate hours ago and I just got home. I'm still so stuffed my belly feels like a basketball.
That log never saw your Huntsman coming Barry ! Proper Job
I'm struggling to work out how to start on my banana with my opener
Well, seeing as we seem to be on a food roll at the moment ... I bought some Rutland Red Leicester cheese from the supermarket today ... and because you obviously* look at the web site for the cheesemaker afterwards  found this from the same dairy ....
* yep, I can't explain it either

I followed Shuya's example and, for Black Friday,.....ran for the hills!
Temps were hovering around the freezing point today, but it seemed like a good day for a hike. The forecast was calling for a snowstorm this evening, and I thought I'd grab a bit of sunshine while I could.
The Huntsman came along, her set off by some wildly orange lichens:
The trail wound up around a 'mountain'. We had had a bit of graupel last night and the trail was a bit icy in spots. I was very glad to have brought a hiking staff along.

I got a little bit lost, which is always fun. The hike ended up being closer to 5 hours (I had told Mrs Nix 2 hours), but she knew I was going to wander about a little and wasn't concerned. The Huntsman got used to open a trail snack (these are pretty good):

As the day wore on, it was evident that the storm was starting to form up and roll in. No snow yet, but it's gone cloudy now. I'd lay even money on waking up to a fresh 2" of snow in the morning.

Day 23
The SAK scissors are sharp but it still took a long time to cut up all of that cypress for garden mulch. :D
Thanks, Matt.
A fun day out.
A couple of highlights: saw a flock of Clark's Nutcrackers working it's way through the pines (not my photo):

Also kicked up a young, but healthy, 2x2 mule deer buck. He dashed off 25 yards and then stopped to check me out. Unsure what a person would be doing back in the hills in just a t-shirt when a Winter storm was rolling in. (Again, not my photo)

I was in the woods on Vancouver Island years ago, I turned around and there was a deer standing right behind me, completely oblivious to me - it doesn't sound like much, but it was a really strange experience. Glad it wasn't a cougar or a bear. :ahhh

well, I'd prefer that the cougar or bear was unaware of me standing behind them, than me being unaware that there's a bear or cougar standing right behind me! :dunno: :D

That was a bit of a thought for me too, Fuzzy. For that reason I carried a small red day pack and wore a bright blue t-shirt. :tu:

I agree...a last resort. Revolver is my first choice and the minimum is a 45LC, 41 or 44 Magnum. With an auto a 10mm. They are a tool. There if you need it. Thanks :cheers:I was wondering about something...are you carrying a sidearm when you go out into the woods? I do.
Depends, Ray.
Black bears and Mountain Lions have been spotted in this area. (And in my back yard.) Some people carry 'Bear Spray', a few handguns.
Rightly or wrongly, black bears and lions don't excite me much, so on this last hike, I carried........a hiking stick.
However! When I go to places that are known for grizzly sightings, especially during hunting season, when inadvertent confrontation is more likely, I do carry either bear spray or a .44 Magnum. (Sometimes a .45LC with hot loads.) Honestly, I have more faith in the handguns, but some places (Wildlife refuges) don't allow firearms.
I've never seen a lion in the wild (My wife has.). All my bear encounters developed and resolved very quickly, and without incident. Fortunately. So....I have mixed thoughts on the whole subject. Still, it's easy to carry a .44, and a tool is a tool.
well some Bears are worse than others :dunno:

Day 24Good one AK, sometimes the fingers just cant.....
Time for new tags for the cats. The can opener spread the key rings on their collars much easier than I could have done without it.
Saw and hook today. I also finally found my missing Sebertool M3 I've been carrying with it most of the challenge. That handled a recessed Phillips screw on a drawer the can opener couldn't get.
Lesney Matchbox No. 61 Alvis Stalwart. This was a piece I restored. This was mint, save a few dings and a few missing tires. I had another, in rough shape, missing tarp, and some of the wheels and tires melted. I took the good tires off that and put it onto the better one. Between these two, I have about $3 invested, as opposed to $15 for one in comparable shape to my results. I've done all sorts of research and can't really find any evidence of British Petroleum using Stalwarts for oil exploration, but it seems plausible.

Been out for a walk in the woods. A couple of families of Long Tailed Tits were working there way through the trees. It's clearly a good time for fungi because there were various fruiting bodies throughout the wood. Also came across a holly tree awash with vibrant red berries. This always beats a good day in the office whatever the weather.:iagree: The outdoors will always beat any day in the office.

Day 25.A royal boundary stone! Now that is a cool find! These are one of the things that make the outdoors so much fun.
Dayhike with family. Found an old boundary stone with a royal sign. These were build about 300-350 years ago and usually showed the borders of the royal forest, that means royal hunting grounds.
Later that day gathered mistletoe, saw usage.
And beautiful sunset.
Great shots, Shuya!:iagree:
Love that old marker stone!

As most of you guys know, I can't do a knife challenge without breaking down a chicken in some way. This challenge would be no exception:
This nice little 3.5# bird got 'spatchcocked'. The main blade, razor sharp, took out the back bone, clavicles, wishbone, and ribs. This allows the bird to lay nice and flat on the grill:
The SAK did a great job here. When I'm using a big kitchen knife, I often just 'power' though tricky spots. With a more delicate SAK, a little finesse is called for......and the SAK delivers. Taking my time, I worked around joints and tricky spots. The sharp Huntsman easily cut through tendon, meat, and cartilage. No problems.
After the SAK did it's work, the bird got dusted with my Cajun spice blend (I have posted this mix elsewhere on MTo, but I'm happy to shoot the recipe to anyone who needs a good Cajun spice mix.) and grilled for about 45 minutes. Fantastic!

Evening duty: cut down several cartboardboxes so they fit into the bin.
2 more days to go... :salute:
Thank Ray and Speedo. Although there's only two days to go of the Challenge I've thoroughly enjoyed getting carrying a Huntsman again. It's quite carryable and not too thick in a pocket with a great range of tools for work & pleasure. The Challenge has reminded me why it is such a favourite here and rightly so. Hats off to the very capable Huntsman :hatsoff:It has been fun! And learning about the SAK thru use makes you aware of the pro’s and con’s of it.

I :like: it Cody!! This has been a great time for me too! I have come to realize that all I ever really needed in a SAK I had all along with my first one. I have so many memories with this knife. In all honesty, it's been more than I've needed in this challenge, but it's sure great to have along!
BTW, see a lot of apples here. I'm always a bit careful with 'wet' stuff. Isn't that a problem, just rinse it of?

While Victorinox X55CrMo14 is quite good to sharpen, cutting those cardboards dulls the blade really good. You can even feel the abrasion, after lots of cuts your blade gets warm. But after 5 minutes on a fine diamond stone its hair popping sharp again.
To be honest, if I had to cut lots of boxes on a daily basis at work, I wouldnt take a SAK with me. For me, a more wear resistant steel, a whancliff blade and a good handle would do the job better.
Like this idea and joined in a tiny little bit at the end.Yes, I just rinse it off and then dry the blade off. No problems, still smooth and snaps close.
Curious to know what the next challenge will be.
Hoping for an Explorer one, since I bought that one yesterday and expecting it this week…
Love to see what other people use their knives for.

:iagree: I have been careful when I rinse the blade to where I haven’t needed to oil yet.BTW, see a lot of apples here. I'm always a bit careful with 'wet' stuff. Isn't that a problem, just rinse it of?
No problem if you dont soak your joints with something sticky.
SAKs are perfect for small cutting tasks that doesnt involve a lot of liquids or if that liquid can be "avoided" by clever cutting (eg cutting tomatos on a board).
If the cutting job would result in a mess (like butchering) I would not take any folder.
And if you did soak you sak with something juicy, warm water, drying and a drop of oil will solve any issue.
Serena,A real doozy??? This sounds interesting

Great post and photos! Not even a little hint on the new and next challenge??? :dunno:
Day 29:Beef kebabs...oh boy...I need to get up there asap! :like:
This may sound a bit convoluted......
I wanted to make a suspension system for some skewers to use with my little grill. I've put skewers directly on the integral grating that comes with the grill, but this often ends up with the skewers sticking to the grating. The obvious solution (to me anyway) is to eliminate the grating and just suspend the skewers over the fire. The problem here is that my skewers are a wee bit too short to use on the grill directly.
So....today I got a long piece of 1" flat stock. I used the Huntsman's awl (I've finally gotten to the 'point' of the story.) to scribe a cut line on the mild steel, and then a hacksaw to divide the flat stock into two equal portions. (You didn't think I was going to use the Huntsman's saw to make that cut, did you?)
So I now have two pieces of flat stock from which I can suspend my skewers for even, non-stick grilling.

Huntsman 30 day review...
I will say that this SAK has lived up to all its expectations. Well made, excellent craftsmanship. It is the right size in my hand. I can slice apples and have no problems with it. The tool selection is very good. The main blade and sissors where the two must used tool used on the Challenge. The wood saw is just great, and will eat wood better than anything. I have found that as I get older the magnifying glass might be a very nice addition. The other addition...I wish it was available in Alox. It is going into my hiking pouch that always go’s with me anytime I go into the woods.
It was a great Challenge.
Ray, it sounds like an original Woodsman I'd what you could use. There's a thread dedicated to them here. Check it out! Will do...and thanks! :cheers:Huntsman 30 day review...

No uses for me today, but the Huntsman was here in my pocket, ready for whatever the day might throw my way. I'll echo the comments of others and say that the Huntsman has, over the past month, proven to be an excellent companion. Not once have I thought I need a different SAK or different tool. When out Elk hunting, I did carry a dedicated, fixed-blade, hunting knife. And I've used a few other knives when tackling bigger projects in the kitchen. For EDC, however, I don't think I've carried a better SAK. The Huntsman's tool set has proven to be superbly useful, with no excess or fluff. During the challenge I believe I've used every tool.....with the exception of the hook. That's a bit odd since the hook is widely known to be fantastically useful.
I think that if I could own only one SAK, it would be a Huntsman. Easy to carry and hugely capable, there's no other SAK I'd rather have when venturing off to the coffee shop or African savannas.
