Title: Repairing an Old Knife - Diminished value?
Post by: archerwin on June 18, 2014, 03:17:35 AM: I've recently bought some old SAKS and one of them had cracked spacers which removed the "snap" in the tools when you're closing them. I plan to repair them using spacers from new/current SAKs of the same length.

Will this diminish the value of a collectible SAK (atleast 40 years old)?

If you're a collector, would you rather not repair the spacers?

All tools are in good condition, even the scales.

There's a couple of ways of looking at this. Unless your replacing say brass liners with SS,then the repair shouldn't be too noticeable. So,it would be up to you and your honesty!

It's better,in my book,to have a working tool that's been repaired or modified than a broken shelf queen.

From a user´s point of view, i´d say repair it yourself and use it. I have no use for pure collecctors items.

Post by: sawman on June 18, 2014, 03:33:29 PM: I'm not a collector of antique SAKs. I only buy, collect or use the newer stuff. But I think out of the replies so far the one that makes the best sense is to send it into Vic for repair.

Post by: archerwin on June 18, 2014, 10:05:21 PM: I actually contacted Victorinox Australia and they said they cannot repair broken spacer/liners but they will gladly replace it with a new one and I can request to keep the old one too.

Thanks for all your replies. Anyway, I don't have the confidence yet to do it myself.
