OK, strange question, I know.
Yes, I'm asking for a very hypothetical answer. But this is MTo! We have the expertise to answer these crucial questions.
Here is why I ask: I came across a photo of a knife reported to have belonged to a former US President, outdoorsman, and conservationist, Theodore Roosevelt.
This knife is on display at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota.
Yes, North Dakota is a real place. The park is actually divided into a South unit and a North unit. Both units are worth visiting. I did some camping in the North unit....nearly got trampled by some frisky bison there. While these parks are not as well known as some other National Parks, I highly recommend a visit if you get the chance.
But, back to our important question.... Here is a picture of the knife from the museum:
Now, I've not seen this knife in person. I can't find any more details on it. I can't tell you the exact size of the knife. I can't even guarantee that it belonged to Teddy. However, assuming this is all accurate and the above pictured knife did belong to Teddy, I find myself wondering....
Would Teddy have liked a Buck 110?
I can't tell for sure, but the photographed knife seems to be about the size of a 110, maybe a 112. I may be mistaken, but it also looks like this knife is a lock-back. Someone correct me, if it is not. I don't know.
However, when I look at this knife I think, "110". It certainly seems like a 110 precursor. Maybe somebody here will know more about this knife, it's history, it's manufacture.
So I have to ask: would Theodore Roosevelt have liked a Buck 110? What do you think?

-
I think he would, be i could also see him liking flippers and OHO knives.
-
I have to agree.... :iagree:
-
i'd say yes. he was a practical guy
-
Not a folder, but he was given a highly decorated knife the last day in office. Sold a few years ago for over $400k...

Interesting knife.
A bit pricey for my budget, but I like it.
-
Presidential knives are interesting. The night Lincoln was assassinated, the contents of his pockets were preserved. Below is the knife, a William Gilchrist 6 bladed pattern we now call a Congress. Lincoln stated he carried the knife because his glasses had a bad habit of loosening, and he used the knife to retighten them. I guess there were no multitools around in the 1860s?
-
With everything I've read and seen about him, I voted yes
-
That museum knife of Theodore Roosevelt's looks to be a folding bowie, which tend to be quite big. The handle folds, so you can use it either as a long knife, or as a slightly more compact version when folded. It is, I bet, much larger than a Buck 110. If we assume that the handle is about 4-5 inches long, as would be normal for a large hunting knife, and compare that estimate to the size of the blade... it's a big knife!
That said, I see no reason why T.R. would not have liked a 110. :hatsoff:
-
You may be right! :iagree:
-
I know it is a fixed blade, but I am thinking he would like the Buck 119.
-
I need a Buck 119.....
-
I need a Buck 119.....
Yes you do :pok:
-
>:D
-
:ahhh

Without question IMO. He commanded the Rough Riders and they were equipped with some very famous Bowie Knife ( Tiffany and Co ). I believe he would have loved a pocketable sturdy blade like the Buck 110. Certainly the humble 110 would have been much different than his fancy Bowie. The 110 is a no nonsense tool I believe he would have been very satisfying as an every day blade for him.
-
I'm quite confident TR would have loved the Buck 110! :)
-
I agree with you guys! :like: :like:
-
Yes, it is very likely TR would have loved the 110 for his EDC pocket knife
I know I like mine

But you might be biased, Loopy.....?
-
Correction to my post above. The Rough Riders were not issued Tiffany and Co bowies . The knife Max showed is the knife I was referring to. It was presented to him as Max states and quite incredibly done might I add.
I stil stand by TR would surely have liked the 110. I can see him with it strapped to his belt on hunting trips, even day to day.

The only way we can know for sure is to send one back in time and ask Teddy what he thinks about it.
I will volunteer to be one of a team of brave Chrononauts to carry out this important task.
Who's with me?

I volunteer Don Pablo to go with you.
He's young and likes adventure and stands a better chance of surviving into the present day to report back if things go wrong. Not that they would.... just sayin'....

Yes I agree magentus shall be the brave
sacraficial .... << cough cough >>..... volunteer.

Rightyho, we bet get cracking on this time machine.
What SAK should I take? :D

Explorer of course?!?!?!
-
Explorer of course?!?!?!
Hmm, but we are 'Tinkering' with time.
Plus I don't have an Explorer.
Or a Tinker.

Yes true  maybe one of the Travellers :dunno:
-
Just take your "My First Victorinox"
You're dangerous enough already without pointy blades in your hands.
-
Which model has a clock?
-
This might disrupt the space-time continuum and change the course of history??? :D
-
Rightyho, we bet get cracking on this time machine.

How do we get the U-boat to 88mph? We're already giving you all she's got!

Teddy was the practical sort so maybe, but I don't think so. It would have required blade engraving and probably a small plate on each side with his initials to have impressed him enough to carry it. Even then, he had his choice of knives and it probably wouldn't have been large enough for his needs or personal requirements.
-
He may have appreciated the functionality of a Buck but I think he would have preferred a Rough Rider. ::)

He did carry a belt knife when out West. I don't know how he equipped himself when back East. :dunno:
Might he have gone for one like this?

I know I would

I'll go!
Excellent. So the team is you Pabs and me. The A Team. La creme de la creme. All we need now is a Buck 110 to show Teddy (should we call him Mr Tedward or Mr Roosevelt when we see him?)
I have a Chinese clone we can give him that will blow his frickken mind!

Sorry Nix, got carried away and spammed your thread a bit.

And just when we were going to answer a really important question.......

... sorry...

I did wonder if the Buck 110 wouldn't be fancy enough. I believe if it wasn't up to the standard he would have wanted he certainly would have had it customized. See even TR is into modding.
-
C'mon.....stag scales? Brass bolsters? Engraved?
How would T.R. have resisted that?
-
:iagree: he would have been stoked.

Right?!

Wait a minute. Are you just trying to convince yourself to get another 110?

Hmmmmmm........

If it were available back then, I would not be surprised. But keep in mind, George Washington, his entire life, carried no more than a tiny MOP scaled Sheffield-made penknife. And I wouldn't be surprised to learn if TR had carried such a small, unassuming knife. The lock-back (and its predecessor) got started around the time of the Rough Riders, and many patterns could be had with it.

Not ornate enough, but this is a good start. Would have made a nice gift for his gun carrier or the dog handler.
-
Who cares!?
-
Phew! back in 2019 again. It was a tough trip but worth it. I have no idea where Pabs and Nate are but it's their fault for stopping for doughnuts at the general store.
Here I present concrete proof of Teddy Roosevelts pocket knife choice:

:ahhh
Finally, a solid answer!
-
Welcome back.
Thats conclusive enough thank you :hatsoff:
-
Pretty good topic of discussion, as an avid outdoorsman, I believe he would have carried it.

:iagree:
(I always thought you were one of our more astute members. :D)

This summer, I'm going to ride over to the park and see if they will let me examine the knife on display more closely.
-
Good one Nix. Would make a great story to have more details about the knife. I see there’s a phone number for the park on their website, may help to try and see if there’s a curator or manager you can link up with? Looks like a really nice park to visit.
-
Who cares!?
Not you apparently :twak:
-
Going by the first photo, observe the boots, the mighty fine hat, the rifle, the canteen/binoculars thing, hes on a horse, the horse has a mud knot...this guy would have loved a 110 :hatsoff:

The park is great. The North and South units are very different from each other, so you need to visit both!

Great assessment, Borg. Once again, you and I agree. :D

I see TR being a Swisschamp kinda guy, with a 110 straight out of the Buck Custom Shop to go with the engraved Ithaca and the Winchester 95's. I'll send a letter back with details on the U boat 😁
-
:woohoo:. Me! The only problem is I won't be coming back!!
I agree, i don't think i would come back. In fact, I would go father back. 1700's would work for me just fine.

Actually that sounds even better! Get a genuine Barlow then! :D
-
The 1700's sounds like fun.....until you remember that Tabasco hadn't been invented yet.

Perfect opportunity to take the recipe back in time with you and make a killing!

Hmmmm, some nice coincidences here from the tabasco wiki page:
To distribute his sauce, Edmund McIlhenny initially used discarded cologne bottles sourced from a New Orleans glass supplier. On his death in 1890, McIlhenny was succeeded by his eldest son, John Avery McIlhenny, who expanded and modernized the business, but resigned after only a few years in order to join Theodore Roosevelt's 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, the Rough Riders

It's a one dot on each side of the number. If I remember correctly that's 74 to 80.

Thanks for the date chart. Corrected the above post. It has one dot on each side of the number. I always called it a two dot for some reason.

Most days, even Teddy Roosevelt would agree 1 dot + 1 dot equals two dots. :D

Nice one David!

Thankfully, he was prior to modern math my friend

C'mon, Barry, :pok:, Teddy could count the number of points on a Buck.......
He was a founder of the Boone & Crockett Club!

Interesting question, Mags.
I wonder which knife has been owned by more Americans? Bowie or 110?
(And then you have to define 'Bowie' which would be a challenge.)
-
Wiki (so this must be true) sen that there have been over 15 million Buck 110's made. :dunno:
VICMAN and I both have quite a few. I wonder who has the other half of that output.......

Major Tom looks uncertain.....

Another question arising is; would Teddy Roosevelt have liked David Bowie?
And if so, which incarnation? :ahhh
And. Would David Bowie (as Major Tom) have outranked Teddy in the RR?
Now I'm going to have a lie down.

Don’t worry Major Don...this thread has already taken a few twists and turns beyond the original question. :D

True; we haven't restricted ourselves in our scope of inquiry, but, I sense that, in typical MTo fashion, we are edging ever closer to developing some well-founded results. That's just how good we are.
