Title: Annoying phrases that you say.
Post by: Benner on November 19, 2009, 12:01:15 AM
Anyone else hear something and then keep saying it for days afterwards despite it actually being quite annoying?  A few weeks ago I was hooked on "sound as a pound" which bugged the hell out of me, but now I'm stuck on "Happy days".  :ahhh

Anyone else do this or is it just me?  :D

I get dumb versions of songs in my head- odd commercials, jingles, jokes and so on.

Last week I had Eric Cartman's version of Lady Gaga's Pokerface going through my head.  As if the original wasn't bad enough....(http://fc03.deviantart.net/images2/i/2003/50/c/4/Pokerface_Emote.gif)

One of the employees I work with said to the rest of the working crew one day that we should resurrect the
word "chillaxin."  In hindsight I should have shot her because that stupid term keeps popping up into my head
as "sound as a pound."  :D

Not really sure how it got started but there is "love" in tennis so we usually say at any given moment for a reaction.

Try to avoid using these myself, as I find them very annoying:

-"dude" as an appelation.

-"hella" as a superlative

-"sick" as referenced in posts above

-"mad" as a superlative

-"was like" in place of "said"

-"rocks" as a term of approbation

-"rocking" in place of "wearing" or "carrying"

Example:

"And she was like, 'Dude, it's one sick gaming system.  GTA positively rocks on this machine, but the hard drive shot craps last night.  Dude, you have hella skillz with computers.  Can you put in this new hard drive for me?'"

"And I was like, 'Babe, of course I can fix it.  I'm rockin' a Cybertool today and have mad skillz with hardware.'"

.

Alright.  I thought about this.  The NUMBER 1 MOST ANNOYING SPEECH HABIT IS:

When people end most of their sentences with an upward tone, as if they're asking a question rather than a flat or downward tone indicating a statement.  When teenagers or young adults do it, I feel like saying, "Are you telling me or asking me that?"  :twak:

I say the word "query" lots - its a medical thing, often written as a '?' in medical notes...  So "?(query) pneumonia" or "? cancer"

Unfortunately it slips in to normal conversation with me alot - so I end up saying things like "query dinner".  It gets some funny looks.

More annoying (and infinitely more pathetic) is the schoolyard antics I can't stop using when I speak to a woman I like.  If they're just friends the conversation is fine.  The moment I start to develop feelings for them all I can do is make fun of them.  No wonder I'm single

OK, I just realized a saying I use that might be annoying. I didn't even realize I say it until this thread. Since then I've been paying attention to what I say and the one thing that I say that drives ME nuts is "awesome possum". I picked it up from a 19 year old girl I worked with about 4 years ago. It irritated me when she said it but I guess some how it slipped into my speech. Ugh, now I have to gargle something, I feel dirty.

Pretty much everything I say I guess... Mr. Whippy said it right off the bat, talking about the skiing/snowboarding/climbing scene. Since I am 2 out of 3 of those, I got all that lingo on lock. "Dude", "sick", "tight", "so clean", "greasy", "do work, son", "gnarly". I could keep going but if you watch any action sports video, you will understand where I'm flowing from. ;)

I use "dude" alot, as well as "bud". I call pretty much everybody I know or meet, that is male, "bud".

And I have a hard time when I see something I like or is real nice from not saying "Sweet!".

Me and a few guys at work watch alot of stand up comedies, we find ourselves spouting off certain phrases all the time. Given the right circumstances you'd hear alot of Ralphie May, Gabriel Iglesias, Cristopher Titus, and John Pinette.

One that I use that really annoys me is "y'all". I catch myself saying this all the time when talking to a group of my guys at work about something, usually when it's something I need them to do......as in "Y'all need to do this" or "Y'all need to do that". I am about as Yankee as they come so even some of my guys go, "Did you just say y'all?" It's funny, but annoying. Likely a carry over into my vernacular from my time spent at Fort Benning.

I love it how different people have their own little saying . For instance I have friends who say the following .....

"At the end of the day "

" I'm not being funny but ..."

" Good Good "

" Oh right "

I often count just how many times each of them say it in a conversation and once you become aware of it you are suprised by its frequency .

Where I used to work I had a habit of walking round the factory saying " not long now "  whether or not it was 10 mins to break time or the end of the day or my holiday was getting nearer .I bugged the hell out of people  :D

Some of my little sayings are

"Rare as rocking horse smurf"

"about as much good as a chocolate fire guard "

"I'm not as stupid as you look "

" Happy days "

" Amazing "

and that all time classic " Boll*cks "

We get that here too.  Very much reminds me of "when all's said and done..".

I've got to admit* that I don't find many of these particularly annoying, not until they get over used.  The same phrase used more than a couple of times in a short conversation starts to get to me.

*Is that an annoying phrase I use?  I think it might be. :-[

Sadly, Ive been using "really?" and "wow" a lot (directed at stupid activity).  When I hear my son use the words, it annoys me.....so I need to stop saying them.
