Let me start by saying, I LOVE Case Knives. There is a nostalgia that I feel with Case Knives, and the multitude of patterns and handle materials appeals to me. I like to visit the Case Outlet in Branson Missouri...it is the ultimate candy store for me. Yeah, my number one knife choice is, and always will be, SAKs, but I also have a decent amount of Case Knives as well. Are you sure its not an addiction!
With that being said...there are some observations I have in relation to the current spread of Case Knives:
1. For the majority of their line up, doesn't it seem like there is a preponderance of "dainty" knives? There are a few beefy blades (Trapper, the new release of Barlows, large Stockman etc etc) but it seems that much of their line is smaller knives. I suppose for collectors and those seeking a non intimidating "gentleman's" knife, that is where the profit lies. Like I said, just an observation.
2. I feel that the blades are a bit overpolished. The corners, grind lines etc, look a bit too rounded. Conversely, the Bose line has some really sharp grind lines. I know it is due to a different line of steel and blade making techniques...I jus think the sharper angles look professional.
3. Handle material - this is a good observation...going to the Case Outlet, and seeing the line up of handle materials is dangerous to my bank account. I applaud Case on the materials they use.
Here is my meager collection of Case Knives BTW. Please feel free to snap some pictures of yours!

I'd take a Seahorse Whittler any day of the week. Though I really like the #75 pattern to EDC.
Good observations Spudley :tu:Nice photos :tu:
What is your experience with the factory edge on their blades? I find them a bit rough/toothy.
Lovely collection btw :like:
* No, I didn't cut the branch with the trapper :-)

Big Case fan here, particularly of the Trappers. I have a few of them, but my son, Noah, has a pretty decent collection! I'm a Pennsylvania native, and we usually make it to the factory museum/store at least once a year.
Definitely a bit rough. I am one knife enthusiast that really never thinks too much of a factory edge. Regardless of how sharp, dull or rough it might be, I immediately put my own edge on it. However, it is noteworthy that the factory edge often correlates to the care and quality of manufacture.
BtW - I also really like the Wharncliffe trappers. I have a single blade mini-Trapper (the EZ open model with a cut out in the handle for better blade grip) with a Wharny blade that I love!
You're fortunate that you have the opportunity to visit the Case factory.A five blade trapper :sa:
I'm also fortunate in being able to collect the knives I like.I just inventoried the Case Trappers and the collection consists of 3 Copperhead Trappers, one 5 blade ,two 3 blade, one single blade Trapper and one Panama Trapper. The balance of the collection consists of 68 two blade model 54 Trappers.
The Mrs got me this a while back, it’s a Orange Curly Zebra Wood, and as you can see she even had it engraved, and when she ordered it they just got the sheaths and the equipment to stamp those so she even had that done to go along with it,That is super cool!

Thats neat!
Let me start by saying, I LOVE Case Knives.
The last Case knife I bought new was a Shark Tooth when they first came out in the 1980's. I have purchased quite a few Case knives since then but they have all been older models. I don't collect knives by brand but whatever suits me at any particular time.
I only have a few Case knives but I like them.
Got my share of CASE knives, too.

Yes it's really interesting.
It's called "The Beast".
Just scored this lot of Case knives.
Just scored this lot of Case knives. I really only got it because it was a great deal and for the 6202. I'll probably be selling a couple of the others.
the 62055 is a Medium Cattle knife, the 6246 I believe is a half Whittler and the 3249 is an ez-open Copperhead with I think a Wharncliff main.

Holy smokes! If you decide to sell that Copperhead, let me know!!!!!
My dad had many knives through his life. He died unexpectedly at 42 and he had his favorite knife in his pocket...a Copperhead. They just seem like a tribute to him when I carry one.
Nice Cases McStitchy! :like: :tu: :tu:

That's exactly what put me off them for years. It was only when Nix sent me the Texas Jack that I really appreciated them for what they are - good American made working knives with decent fit n finish and a great history and heritage.
Recently, I've been looking at vintage ones, especially 60s, 70s ones - they really do it for me, they seem to have just the right balance of form and function and they're reasonably easy to pick up in good condition... I may have bought a few.

I picked up this Trapper at a consignment style flea market just because it was a CASE, it had SS blades, and it was Orange.
It is now one of my favorites to EDC.
After arriving home I learned the scales are G10.

They just can't seem to displace a SAK in my pocket, though. The SAK's complement of other tools in addition to blades is just too darn handy.

I was looking to pick another Rough Rider Barlow as shared in the Trad Challenge. Maybe to forward onto Ireland as a member there liked it.
This time not as much stock, a fe old sheaths, some high priced Case models and this greased scale Case. I think he thought it to be lower in synthetic.
Just lucky for me.

I like to HD models also spudley but most sellers ask too much money.I found this one for a fair price.

That main blade on your Whittler reminds me of the Select series of Case knives? Maybe it's a Select Half Whittler?
I don't have any Copperheads but I do own three Copperhead Trappers.
Don't know enough about Case select to know :dunno:Potassium permanganate is some interesting chemical for use in a pinch. :tu:
I gave the whittler a potassium permanganate treatment and it looks so much better IMO.

These are my Case knives. I used to have more, but like an idiot, sold them years back for almost nothing. Anyhow, the two trappers to the right mean a lot to me. The older one on the upper right belonged to my grandfather on my dad's side of the family. When we were kids, we would visit my dad's mom (who we used to call Grandma up the hill due to the steep hill my dad had to drive up to get to her house! :P) in Pittston, PA. One day I found this knife and my grandmother let me have it. My grandfather was gone at this point. Looking back, I am surprised my parents let me have it since I was pretty young at the time, maybe 6 or 7, but I am just guessing. I am 59 now and that was a long time ago. For years the knife was missing then one day I found it at the bottom of one of my tool boxes. I quickly grabbed it and put it in a box for safe keeping. It is not in great condition. My grandfather must have used the daylights out of it, but it has a lot of sentimental value. He died pretty young and I do not remember him very well. Evidently, his taste in knives must have rubbed off on my dad! The trapper in the lower right was his. He passed away in 1988 and I think this knife was purchased sometime in the early 80's. I think my grandfather's knife is form the 1940's. The rest are just the remains of my collection!

I always hesitate to come into these threads. There are so many lovely knives :ahhh. You get used to it!
:iagree:. Thanks Vicman!
Thats what I'm afraid of :gimme:. At some point I will pick up something. There are so many patterns and thankfully I cannot figure out which I like best. Unlike SAKs traditionalsaren't a rabbit hole I want to go down.I understand. I am the same way with the Gerber and Leatherman tools. If I were still working HVAC maintenance I would have a ton of them. The spares I did have, I have gifted away. I now have one of each and thats it.
Nice information on the XX :tu:
Not to put too fine a point on the Vmans post but it's not an explanation of the XX but instead about the "Select" series.

The XX is used on many different Case knives and is not a designation of the "Select " series.
The top photo illustrates the many ways in which Case uses the XX designation but they are not part of the Select series of knives.

Now that is a super nice logo! I love the Case on the roof and the XX on the side! Have never seen that logo. But then I am rather new to Case knives and the history. :2tu:

This is the Case model 47 that got me to liking that model. I got it in 2004 and it has been carried a lot. The handle is smoother feeling from all the pocket carry.
The blades look shiny in the picture, but if you see them up close there are fine scratches on them. The back of the Sheepsfoot used to have quite a few scratches but I polished most of them out.

I get a great deal of satisfaction in taking a great knife and making it better. As I do with all of my Case knives,I remove the machine marks left on the back springs and then polish them to a mirror finish.
My very modest collection of user Cases, but it's growing - I've got another on the way and I've got my eye on at least two, maybe three others that I might get in the following weeks. Maybe after that I can start to calm down a bit...

Here are 3 Slimline Trappers. The yellow one was a gift to me, but it is out of Chrome Vanadium and after carrying it for a week in really humid weather it started to get spots of rust on the blade, so I cleaned them off and then forced a patina on the blade using vinegar and have not had any more problems with rust spots. That patina looks great on that blade! Great save. :2tu:

The top one is from the Pocket Worn Series. The handle scales are polished at the factory to give it the smooth feel of a knife that has been carried for years.
The bottom 2 have G10 handles. The brown one is rough G10 and the black one is smooth G10. I like the feel of the rough G10 the best when using.

The Fisherman's knife is special to me. I bought it new in the late 1960's.
When I was growing up I watched my dad use his Case Fisherman to clean fish and I had wanted one for years. The only difference between the older Case Fisherman that he had and mine was that the fish hook sharpening stone in the handle of his was rectangular shaped instead of rounded on the ends.

Some really great knives being posted here.I notice that the majority of the posts are of newer Case knives so I thought in all fairness I would post up some of the older models I have accumulated over the years. Some are fixed blade and some are folding knives and many of them come with a story. I have recently starting working on my book about my accumulating knives and the stories of how they came to me again and hope to finish it by the end of the year.Nice ones :tu:
I first posted in this thread when it first started and just showed a picture of the drawer most of my Case knives are in so today I thought I would post some individual pictures. Hope you enjoy them.
#1 is a pair of 304 throwing knives with their sheath. These are the large size. Background on all pictures is one inch(25.4mm)squares for reference.
#2 is a Tested XX 3172 folding hunter. The celluloid handles are warped badly but not out-gassing.
#3 is a Tested(I think;the stamp is illegible)5165 that was submerged in water for a long time.Took me a week of soaking in Marvel Mystery Oil to free it.Cleaned up it took a great edge.Only one I have ever seen with a factory installed bail.
#4 An XX Bulldog 5172 with beautifully aged stag handles.
Page five:
#1 A 1992 Case V-42 reproduction along with a real V-42 I bought on e-Bay for $17! Listed as a letter opener. The handle is only temporary until I can make a proper one from leather.
#2 A Russlock with an Orange County Choppers logo. Bought at Lowe's on closeout for $18.
#3 A Case belt buckle.
#4 A Case Bowie
Nice Sodbusters...I have been looking at them also...the Traditional Challenge again to be blamed. ... and like the no bolsters one the best!
Page two:I just saw the newest Second Amendment edition model last night...think it was on SMKW...it is nice

#2 An XX P5172 Buffalo.
#3 A Case Bradford issued to troops in the first World War.The master blade has been drastically sharpened.
#4 A small anniversary knife.

Very nice...is that a Grandfather Barlow? Looks great :cheers:Thanks to all who replied to my posts. The Granddaddy Barlow(6143) was modified slightly by me to facilitate opening as the spring is very strong in it and my fingernails weren't up to the task. Since that time I have started using a hand made knife opener made from an old broken knife blade.

Here is one other very rare Case Tested XX letter opener.I have never seen another like it or found a listing as to the model number. Although Case made several letter opener knives they all had the standard equal end handles rather than a trapezoid shaped(coffin)handle and they all had spear point blades rather than the spey blade that this one has.
I have carried knives in my back pocket for years and never lost one yet, however, I carry them vertically in the pocket next to my wallet or I have a couple of other knives in pouches vertically next to them so that they are not loose in my back pocket. :DOh ok, now I have a better understanding of that carry method. Thanks
For example right now I have a Swisstool Spirit and a SwissChamp in pouches vertically in my left back pocket and the black Case Trapper is sitting vertically next to them, and I have a Case Carhartt Large Stockman vertically next to my wallet in my right back pocket.

Oh, thats nice. I have seen the Victorinox inspectors using a tool in there hand to open blades. They are pretty quick! Here are two of my "knife openers".Both of them had broken blades so I re-purposed them. The Remington also works nicely as a watch case opener. Note the Camillus tip is ground on a taper and fits most nail nicks nicely. When I am shopping for knives I usually carry the Remington as the blade folds up whereas the stub on the Camillus although it still folds isn't easily opened.

This is an interesting Case Trapper. It's called a Copperhead Trapper,#6249.Thats neat and nice bit of information to know!
I've been fortunate to have collected three. This is the most colorful of the group.
If you compare it to 54 series trapper,my favorite, you'll see the blade grinds are different.
There is also a difference in length. The 54 series is 4 1/8" long and the 6249 is 3 7/8" long.So there is only 1/4" difference between the two.

That's a great lookin knife TG! :like:Thanks David.
:iagree:.I've never seen one like that. That front bolster looks like it's from a Canoe pattern. How long ago did they make it?This has the same model number as the Copperhead 6249.It's a mystery to me why they didn't initiate a different model number for the Copperhead Trapper. The front bolster of the Copperhead was designed to cover the end of the blade, where it makes contact with the backspring,so it wouldn't catch on the pocket when the blades are closed
:iagree:. I've never seen one like that. That front bolster looks like it's from a Canoe pattern. How long ago did they make it?There is one on the bay that I put a link to awhile back. It combines two of my favorite traditionals.

It's an older model and you paid a very reasonable price.
Thats what I was thinking...thanks
I was wondering what the first year for the Changer was. Do you happen know?
The Case XX Changer just came in...it is really nice!
I'm not sure of the first year of production. No I didn’t know that! Thanks! Useful information!
You do need to know that the pre 1990 XX Changer blades will not fit the post 1990 bodies and vice-versa.
Do all of your blades have 3 dots?Yes, all the blades have 3 dots. The fillet blade has a light strike on it but it is 3 dot also.
I could only make out 2 dots.
A fellow collector has a saw blade that was marked six years prior the other blades being manufactured.LOL

Folding Hunter and Large Stockman in black canvas laminate are my latest two. The combination of the black handles and the mirror-polished blades looks really sharp. I'm sure they would prove durable as well, if I can bring myself to use either of them...I just got done watching a video with the Case owner...and he says that people come to the booth at the shows and tell him they don’t want to use there Case knives, he tells them they have his permission to use them!

I have the feeling there are about to be some XX Changer purchases...haha.I have heard it is about the same length as a Buck 110. But thinner than the 110
Ergo-wise, how does the XX Changer feel in hand? How does it compare to a Buck 110?
I saw some on ebay. The amber bone looks good...also, there is a zytel light weight model. Hmmmm
Nice one Ray! Congratulations!!Thank you! Case is starting to take up more real estate in my wooden tool box with my mechanical pencils...may need to get a bigger box!

If you keep using it and wiping it after use, occasionally with a bit of oil, it will build up a lovely uniform patina. :tu: If you don't like the look, you can take it back a bit with a tiny bit of brass polish. Thanks for the tip -

I've never done a patina by food before.... Is it normal to have a somewhat heavy taste of iron in your apple slices? I'm not leaving the knife in, just straight cuts.Leave the knife in the apple??
I MAY not have gotten all the wax off, and I am somewhat stuffy and congested, so my sense of taste is skewed. But I could've swore I was tasting iron.
Here is another 54-65 pair.Very nice
Leave the knife in the apple??I've seen people leave a knife in something, like a potato or apple, for ______ amount of time to get a darker patina.
I usually cut slices or quarter them if they are smaller. I haven’t tasted iron on my apples.

I found a seller who had this Case Trapper for sale.He also had a flyer from Ford Hardware Store to promote a sweepstakes for an OCC custom chopper. They had Case make and engrave many different knives for this sweepstakes.A special run! Very nice
This is 1 of only 25 in this configuration, 6254 Trapper, made for this special promotion.
The factory made a special effort for this production as illustrated by the finish of the back springs.I didn't have to remove and residual machine marks,as I do with most of the Case knives.I did remove some minor handling marks from this 14 year old knife.
On the front scale is a chopper done on natural bone, while the back scale is left plain.
Very nice find, toolguy.

I'm not really sure of dealers cost.Very nice! Too pretty for me to use, so I probably wouldn't have purchased it. But that's cheaper than a new trapper many places today!
The flyer, the owner sent along with this Trapper, indicated the Case knives had prices between $70.00 and $75.00.Remember though this was 14 years ago.
I don't mind telling our members what I paid for this particular knife. This is not to boast about the deal but to inform.I can never understand,on other sites, where the sellers remove the sale price after the knife is sold.In my mind, this practice doesn't allow other members to understand the value of specific knives.
The seller wanted $50.00 so I offered a reasonable $40.00 to which the seller agreed.

Steve that's an exceptionally nice old Case.
Congrats everyone.
This is a Case 54 Trapper which I've had for a few months.I just got out of the shop and it turned out well.
This a ginger-ale color,a winter bottom pattern, done on bone with the bomb shield..
It's always difficult to try and display the mirror polish I perform on the back springs but I do try.
It's here and in exceptional shape for a 50 plus year old knife. :o It's been used but has been very well taken care of. Strong springs but easy to open and just needed couple of swipes on a steel to bring it back to cutting receipt paper.Oh yeah! That is a nice one for sure! :tu:

This is Case Trapper with Sambar Stag handles that I bought last year. The seller advertised it as having SS blades.I was just starting to collect Case and didn't pay attention to the stamping on the base of the blade. In any event the seller asked for offers so I made one that I thought was fair. After a few exchanges of offers,I made the purchase. When it arrived I discovered it didn't have SS blades but it was such a nice knife and NIB,that I did not make an issue of his misrepresentation and decided to keep it.That Stag is very nice looking...putting that logo in the middle would have killed its look!
I do like the fact that the Case logo is not placed in the middle of the handle.

Very nice Case and pair.
Interesting.I only have three, yet newer models. It is my impression that more knives of the newer vintage are made with Surgical Steel as described or with Stainless Steel.
Any change in the quality for better or worse?

Older models had higher carbon types steels to be easier to maintain sharpness. Just MHOp.

I didn't finish the tale about this knife.I bid on this NKCA 3 blade Trapper and won it at $64.95.After tax and shipping it came to a few cents over $74.00.
I posted that link to another one like this in the hopes that some member would make an offer and pick up a really nice Trapper.
I found this knife to be in excellent condition but I did give it a final polish and wax before I took these pictures. Before I could finish I spotted the mail carrier bringing a Case Christmas Trapper.
Here is the NKCA Trapper. Unfortunately mirror polished blades present problems of reflections in the blades.

American Worker Trapper today :D
A bit of a geeky observation, but...
Did you know... that the two bladed 62032 Texas Jack is actually 4g heavier than the three bladed 63032 stockman of the same pattern? I figured out why and it's quite obvious once you examine them, but do you know why?
Answers on a postcard*- first correct answer gets a sweetie. :2tu:
*No, not really
Thicker blade stock???
Do you want to hazard a guess Ray?I was thinking the material weight used.
I was thinking the material weight used.
I'm pretty certain I know why. But since I've already guessed I wait a while giving others a chance. :D
Case BarlowNice :like:
My guess is that if they are the same thickness, then the jack would require an extra spacer/layer that would weigh more than one of the stockmans blades?? :dunno:
Texas Jack has a full brass spacer ?
Poor show Speedy... poor show... There was a bag of Haribo up for grabs, could’ve been all yours.:rofl:

I found another one.I do actively look for these.Sometimes the owner asks too much for them and at other times the owners just want to sell quickly. This was the latter of the two instances. No one else wanted it apparently, because I bought it for $22.00,which was the opening bid.
Thanks gentlemen.Great score  :drink: yes, it’s party time :drink:

Silver Kirinite Trapper.
What are your thoughts on the durability of Kirinite? Info online seems limited.
That's a good question.Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you.I do know that it is an acrylic material that has been compared to Corian. If it's as tough as Corian then it should prove to be durable.
I've read that knife makers like it because it's easy to shape.I like it because it has depth that unfortunately I'm unable to capture with my meager photographic skills.

You know your about to cause me to buy one of those 55's. :ahhh :DIt really is a very nice knife. I was going to get another Case Gunstock but found another SAK with India Horn and I have been wanting one for a while now. So I bought it and the Case will have to wait a couple of weeks now.
I don't think I'm going to rest until I pick up a Moose and a Tiny Trapper, probably in that order :facepalm:I know that feeling...

I got my first one in 2007/2008 and it had a lot of pocket time (you can see wear and loss of colour on the scales). However, I never got "the bug" from them. I bought four (one of which I later sold), and was gifted one, but was so happy with the ones I've got, I preferred them to all the others I saw :D Their prices help curtail additional spending too ;)

Here's a neat somewhat older Case Swell Center Moose. It's too bad they don't make more of these. At 3 5/8" long with two wide, full-length blades and rounded bolsters, it packs a lot of cutting power into a compact and pocketable package. That is a lovely looking knife :like: :tu:
Also, because both blades have usable points, I really like the clip and spear blade combination much better than the clip and spey combination that, for reasons unknown to me, seems to have become the standard.

Here's a Trapper in blue G-10. In person, it's a very striking blue, and would make the knife easy to find if dropped. Nickel silver pins and liners are a nice upgrade over the standard brass in my opinion. Now, if Case would only expand the line beyond the current six offerings...

Happy 4th of July!!!
I recently decided to start buying some CASE knives, and love 'em. My last four knife purchases here which seem fitting for today. Case chestnut bone copperlock, old red bone stockman (with spey blade), and a blue bone Rogers corn cob stockman with pen blade. (That blue one is a perfect knife for carry to a formal setting - small, and the silver and blue are as classy as a cuff link!). When I bought the blue stockman, they also had a Buck 110 with the bolsters stained badly with someone's finger prints (No idea what they had on their fingers when they held it, but it really did go into the brass a little). They couldn't clean it off, so they gave me a discount. After I returned home, a little bit of Brasso and a good bit of elbow grease and she looks brand new. My next two knives are going to be a Tractor Supply exclusive Stockman with olive stained bone scales, and hopefully a Buck 112 in S30V.
Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday!!

Haven't checked in for a while. Really love the NAVY knives!
240 bucks for the Trapper. :o
Here's my latest. I liked the little barn in the logo on this Tractor Supply Stockman. About once a month I stop there to get a bag of dog food, and somehow I always end up leaving with a knife as well. Next month, if it's still there I might get the Rosewood folding hunter they have in the case. I was looking through their online catalog last night and saw they have an axe (Winkler series) that sells for $500 and they are out of stock. That must be one heck of an axe.
Cheers mate. :cheers:Are you trying to convince us or yourself? Either way, nice knives and as long as the hobby doesn’t prevent taking care of necessities it isn’t a problem.

Its a lovely knife David. Thats a real gem that I would treasure. I have one XX era that is a wee bit small for even me. Its a Tadpole that is super cute tho.
Case 6220 "Peanut". This is a XX era Peanut with Rogers bone covers. Rogers bone Cases are scarce and I'm glad to have this one.
This is definitely not a traditional Case knife. I could take or leave the Harley Davidson branding, but I can definitely appreciate the black and gray G10 scales and nickel silver pins and liners...

That's funny, because the reason I would buy that Case would be for the HD branding.LOL
Nice knife Nate.
Case Barlow XX era. Made for Case by Utica in the 40's or 50's. Knife companies often made knives for other knife companies back in the day.
David are you bored or just looking to resurrect a Case thread?

When I saw that Case was offering one of my favorite patterns in one of my favorite handle materials, I knew I would have to pick up one (or several).
Case apparently designed this family for the outdoorsman, and they made multiple good (and a few questionable) decisions to that end…
Pros:
- Durable G10 scales
- Bright red color makes it stand out if dropped in most environments
- Nickel silver pins and liners (and bolsters) provide superior corrosion resistance to the more commonly used brass
- highly polished blades provide better resistance to corrosion than a matte or as-ground finish
- price point of $50 - $60 is in line with competition such as Buck 301 and 303
Improvement Opportunities:
- Case says that the handles are shaped by hand for a comfortable grip. However, corners of the scales are inexplicably left at a sharp ninety degrees. These should have been contoured, or at least rounded off.
- I’ll be the first to stay that I don’t like really aggressively textured handles. They are uncomfortable in hand and hard on clothing. However, smooth polished G10 (like these scales) can be a bit slick. Some light to moderate jigging or other texturing would improve the grip and also make the scales more tactilely interesting.
- Case’s basic stainless steel is ok, but I would appreciate, say, a 154CM option if it could be accomplished for 2 or 2.5 times the price.
Overall, if you’re on the hunt for a traditional pattern, but built with modern materials to be a real user that you won’t have to baby, this red G10 line is worth a look.

Aloha really like that Tribal Lock! :tu: What is the color of the smooth bone covers?
This is a Case 6265 made between the years of 1965-1969.It took me a few years to locate this model in good condition.Couple of nice folding hunters there TG!
The difference in the shape of the front bolster defines this as being manufactured during those years.
The photo below illustrates the shape of a 1972 production of the same model.
Couple of nice folding hunters there TG!
Can't believe I didn't answer you David . Smooth antique bone is what Case calls the Tribal lock covers but they don't give a color. I'd say it reminds me of butter scotch :dunno:.
Awesome Trappers ToolGuy and Spartan! :tu:
:hatsoff: thanks David!
Had the hunter up in the mountains this past week
Good golly I didnt even know or had forgotten that knife existed. I like it. :tu: What years were those produced TG?

I believe Spartan19's knife with the barn shield is a 6347. The shield is exclusive to Tractor Supply. Next time I have to go there, I'll be bringing one or three of them back with me.
Let me see if I can reinvigorate this party. I've shown these two by themselves, but never together. Two Sod Buster Jrs, one in bone and the other in yellow Delrin.

I know my bias is already showing; but to me yellow Delrin on a Case is very nearly as synonymous as red scales on a SAK. :D
You'll get no argument from me that yellow Delrin is classic and classy!
Today the harvest orange Peanut rotated out, and an old red Peanut rotated in.

When I began really looking at traditional knives Case was a brand I looked at. There are others but Case stood out with the long history of the brand. I am a fan and have become a bigger fan over my short time buying traditional knives. What I can say is there is a lot of knife for the money and a lot of cover options to keep any collector happy.
Here are my Case knives.
Awesome collection :) Mine is quite more modest as I kind of like and want most of the Leathermans, Bucks, Spydercos and Victorinoxes out there :D
Here they are

On my "soon to get" list are : round bolster stockman , the big trapper and a sodbuster or two.I'm a fan of the Sod Buster Jr. Pretty much a straight-up working knife, though they look good decked out in bone, too. And a black or yellow Delrin Soddie will only cost one about $30 US!

Thats what I'm afraid of :gimme:. At some point I will pick up something. There are so many patterns and thankfully I cannot figure out which I like best. Unlike SAKs traditionals aren't a rabbit hole I want to go down.

I know I'm a couple of years behind the curve, but does anyone else miss the "long C" tang stamp? The new one lacks a little elegance to my eye.
Looking at the 80-89 stamp. I'm assuming that ss stands for Stainless but, jeez, pick a better font I'd say!
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Well, now I'm getting a little obsessed. :D Having barely glanced at the tang stamps before, I'm now taking macro photos.
Interesting that the form of the S seems to be inconsistent even between knives made in the same year.
Studying tang stamps can get to be overwhelming at times. :D I have even bought knives just for the tang stamps. There are people who collect tang stamps. You might want to try and get a copy of "Goins Encycopedia of Cutlery Markings" to further your research.
I like the tailed C stamp as well, yet not really a Case Collector! I do however have found several patterns that I fancy. Sod Buster, Muskrat, Canoe, Tribal Lock, and CopperLock.
One of my favorite pocket EDC is this Tribal found at a Case dealer's display case!!! (NOS) [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
I liked the Tribal Lock so much, just could not be happy with one, so 2nd one sought and found, along with a version of the Copperhead so I qualified for free shipping

I can not wait for you to share and see what you selected!!! :woohoo:
It is just my size, almost same dimensions as my 112 slim. The lock back is what put it into my rotation. Or, was it the blade??? :tu:
LC it was the whole package. Blade, handle and being a locker didnt hurt anything. Ordered the gray pocket worn with Crandall jigging. If I like it and I'm sure I will there are a couple more that have my attention that may get ordered in the near future. :like:

I really like the Copperhead pattern a lot. They are AWL very SHARP looking.
I really like the Copperhead pattern a lot.
I have to confess that the Tribal Lock had never really appealed to me. I felt like the looks weren’t particularly striking, and it’s smaller than what I would typically carry as a single blade locking folder.I picked my first TB for its scales first, then the blade style!

I was surprised when I laid next to my 112, it was almost the same size.

This thread discussion has weakened my resistance. I gave into today and made a trip to a CASE DEALER near me after I dropped my granddaughters off at Cheer practice.
I did my studies, search for Tony Bose designed traditional knives.
A SOWBELLY in Autumn Orange, display model is only one, 02/16. Matches the Tribal in my pocket.
Another Autumn Orange Tribal, 04/17, last one as well, a back or a gift?
A Navy Blue Tribal, 04/17, also, only one!
Then a Navy Blue Sod Buster Jr, 06/21, priced less than a Black model. And last one of this color!!!

I collect Pattern 45 knives, my favorite being the classic 6445R, a scout/camp knife with jigged bone scales. I got a really cool one the other day, a ca. 1930's-40's R445R. The first R (in place of the 6) denotes the use of fiber scales.Very nice!

After tying up the edges on my Tony Bose Stockman I promptly put it into my pocket. Its been great carrying it.
Mangos didn't stand a chance.
There are some TB designated models like the Sowbelly Stockman. This knife is made same as any Case so the quality and QC would also be pretty standard. Mine was fantastic however so I do hope they are all like this. I also have the Tribal Lock which is a TB standard production knife. I've read some having issues with theirs. Mine is very good.
The limited TB knives are a bit different in that these are as close to his customs from a production standpoint as we can get. There are features that regular production knives wont have hence the price point for these limited knives. The QC should also be on point as well. The materials are non standard. Mine came in terrific condition. The price point is really high tho at $500+. I got mine along with a limited Tribal Lock with his likeness etched in the white bone for $300

Nice pic !
Arrived today, a Case pattern I did not know existed until earlier this week, introduced in a YouTube Channel unboxing. Then decided I did not need, and curiosity changed that. Examining a closer look at the pattern number I learn this is a Tony Bose design released this year but with limited production and not in the catalogs.
A Panama Trapper! A 4-5/8” 2 blade pocket knife, this one is Purple Curly Maple with the Ichthus shield.

Through a missed listing on the the bay the Lockwood knife I thought I won turned out to be a new never used or sharpened Case 6 Dot (1974) 11031 SH . Contacted the seller and he said I could keep it or return it for a refund. This knife has excellent old time Case quality. 1974 was the years I graduated from high school so I decided to keep it. It'll go good with my old XX era 11031 SHCCNice score!
I decided to keep it.You chose wisely. The 11031SH is a real looker! :like:
That is beauty, it had been waiting its whole life just for you😉
I luv the wood grain. That is so nice.
Yes dig them out and take a look. Neat finds. I like the Case Yellow.Like I said idk if it’s a case I don’t remember a fancy name besides kabar, and was like
When ya locate them I'm interested. Ka-bar has a long history and yes the knife and company had become synonymous with a particular knife. The USMC fighting knife.I know one is downstairs in my one special storage bucket, but I can’t get down there till the kids up,
Very cool.I haven’t got the slightest clue of them, the hammer has a little piece of that toilet seat missing on the one side, and again I always thought kabar was military
Hammer is an old brand originally trade marked by New York Knife Co. Then bought by Schrade. I also have a Hammer trad.
Couple oldies ya got there.

Case Marilla
I’d been meaning to try one of Case’s “modern” knives, and when I saw they were offering one in CPM 20CV, I jumped on it.
I really want to like this knife, and Case did some nice things with it, but there are also a couple of glaring issues…
Pros:
- F&F and W&T
- Handle shape/ergonomics in hand - the shape of the handle is comfortable and really locks the knife into my hand, in spite of its relatively thin profile
- Action - flips open easily with just the index finger (no wrist flick required), no blade play in either open or closed positions, no concerns with accidental opening
- Blade shape - comes to an acute point while offering plenty of belly
- Premium steel
Cons:
- G10 panel - I understand Case was trying to provide some texture on what would otherwise be a smooth (even slick) anodized aluminum handle, but the panel isn’t flush with the rest of the handle (sits slightly proud) and the texture is too aggressive. Some light texturing of the aluminum similar to Maglite or Vic 93 mm alox would have been much better, and could have been applied to virtually the entire handle instead of a small patch.
- Huge protruding screw heads on the screws that hold the pocket clip on (see last pic) - This seems like such a rookie mistake, and it really interferes with using the pocket clip. Screws should have been countersunk so they sat flush with the handle. This is one of those things that make me ask, “Didn’t you build a prototype and have someone carry and use it for a week before putting it into full production?”
That's a nice looking knife nate :like: how are you liking that Marilla, I haven't seen any yet and haven't had the chance to try one outThanks Noah. Overall, I like it and have been carrying it a fair amount lately. My thoughts are pretty much laid out in my previous two posts about the Marilla in this thread, but to summarize.
Pilot test run 18 pattern medium stockman in amber peach seed jigged bone and 20CV…
Most of the Case knives I see are abused. I can see the very rough grind marks. Pretty sad actually. I had to learn to leave well enough alone. I thought to buy them up and sell for parts or make knives from all the parts. Lot of work, time, money tho.Well, I was postured for a challenge! Found a Yellow Soddy Jr on the auction site, seller was asking $22, and had buy it now option. After a few days, I may have been only one looking, he sent me a Make an offer email. (Also, listing was free shipping)
Well, Steve when asked why he preferred CV steel on Case, he said “it aged nicely!”
While I was prepping supper, baked potatoes in the oven, I also decided to bake a package of Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and between batches I started work on the knife…
400 grit wet dry paper, then aluminum foil, then 400 again wet. Then after supper more aluminum foil. My hands were BLACK, but progress. Then fetched my CASE cleaner/polish. Applied and let set. Started another batch of cookies, Oatmeal/Raisin !
Wiped down the polish, must say the blade has character. It is stained, will have to just see🤪 next oil and sharpen.

It is a gift from me to me for completing my extended RADIATION TREATMENT of 39. I have 7 to go. I will be patient and not open until next Wednesday afternoon, after my 39th treatment.
Also justified the Caribbean Blue color as detailed by the tack pin and bookmark received when I completed round two last August. There is color designated by “Hope for a Cure” for many of the cancers that are experienced and for caregivers as well.Choose Hope is a nice website for awareness items.
I can understand why Case sells so many knives. When they knock a cover out the park like this one its hard to not want each pattern in Caribbean Blue.Agree, on the colors and wanting multiple patterns.
I like Antique bone and BoneStag 6.5 as well. The synthetic are pretty great too. Ihavehad one in grey and it was slick. Catherine is now the proud owner. Her mail knife.
Last Friday checking a few outlets for CASE knifes, I found a Tony Bose Tribal lock in a pattern I have never seen or have seen other CASE models dressed with.Like the coloring on that one. I have a Half Whittler that I bought specifically for the Tribal burnt purple

Very nice! Isn’t the date printed on the end of the box along with the model and material information. If a January, February or March date, then the tang date indicators could reveal the previous year for blade birth. It's just possible that that's true and that I'd never noticed before.

Case Three Dot, Two Dot Hawbaker Special. This knife is about as close to mint as you can get.
You likely already know this David, the “3dot” and tang stamp indicate a 1977 made model.
The “2 dot” with the same stamp is a 1978 made model.
I would be interested to know the actual model number of rack knife. Usually a 4 or 5 digits number scheme.
The combination of blade types has me curious🤓
You are correct they are both nice and one looks as if was tucked away for a rainy day that never happen. 🥲

Nice! I highly recommend this stockman as well. I haven't seen these in a while and I love my yellow one. I carry it more than any other traditional and I tend to not use a spey or pen that often. The awl pairs well with an MT or SAK that doesn't have one like the Pulse or Compact.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned here but, if not, I thought it would be a good place for documentation on Case knife production.
Chrome Vanadium (CV) has been replaced by 1095 carbon steel (CS) in Case's lineup. That's not really a problem for me, but it is noteworthy.
See the Case blog article at the link below:

I caved and ordered myself a wharncliffe trapper.Bone Stag too!

Bone Stag too!
You are AWL IN!
How log till arrival?
Well, you guys broke me down  :like: Most people will select a Synthetic scaled model as their FIRST Sod Buster as they are priced less than the bones models.
I received this lovely Sod Jr yesterday and carried it today :D

That 6.5 handle material I find very attractive. I don't recall what you were not fully happy about with the brown Stockman G?
This however is where much of Case criticism stems from, inconsistency. I've had one I was not thrilled with either. Very very bad grinds and filthy bordering on garbage white bone handles. I sent back and was taken care of to my delight. All others have been terrific thankfully.
Delayed anticipation for just a few moments longer. I've always liked the brown paper wrap Case use. Long may it continue. New box graphics to me too.
After my slight disappointment in the Case brown synthetic med Stockman, I can say I have no such reservations about this beauty.

Nope you jumped in with the fancy style first 😎
Most people will select a Synthetic scaled model as their FIRST Sod Buster as they are priced less than the bones models.I think my first Soddie (now in the hands of McStitchy) was bone. But I have come to prefer the thicker profile of the synthetic models.
I don't know if you know how deep my trad collection is  I prefer stag over most things in a trad and love Damascus steel as well :D Bone in these looked as nice or nicer than the stag is why I went for that but I meant for it to be CV instead of carbon :dunno: I use to carry a trad way more but that has been a few years since I have now
Also thanks Steve and Aloha :hatsoff: I do like it pretty good :D
Looking great, Aloha and Gareth :woohoo: :like:

A Black Friday special at Do it Best Hardware in Amish community. Last one in display case, on sale at $20, that day only.
Some great Cases on show lately, y'awl! :like:
Most don't because you never post pics of them anymore :pok:

I know  Summer is the worst time for me to carry trads (especially carbon :ahhh ) because I sweat so much :ahhh
I will try to get a coffee pic this weekend  :salute: :D

This Copperhead is the only one I own right now. I had ordered a few more that got in this week, but they all had numerous issues and are on their way back to the store I bought them from. Admittedly, even the Copperhead came to me with a blade tip that stuck up above the scales, and required me grinding the kick to bring it down.
Glad to see other folks are having better luck and getting some nice looking knives.. I just drew the short straw this time.

My two favorite small Jack knives😎
How do you get on with the weight of pull on the TB? I love love the pattern but wish it had a tougher backspring. The TearDrop pattern by Tony Bose has a 5-1/2 pull. It is my only TearDrop and I have only used for some light duty slicing. A push type of use, no carving or point on use.
I'm inclined to save myself the time/cost of mailing it, and keeping it as a minor cosmetic oddity.
I would do the same.
I believe the pins are punched or possibly spun at the factory (and that both sides are done simultaneously), so I suspect that pin was just off-center a bit when it was “peened”. The whole thing was then sanded flush & smooth.
I concur that it is unlikely to impact the structural integrity of the knife, and that it is simply a minor cosmetic imperfection.
That's a beautiful Tribal Lock. I've been looking for one, but haven't found one is a good enough price range. This one was reasonable! Much less than the Stag Bone model I yielded to Rich (unknownly) on a eBay auction.
CASE COUNTRY II TOUR visited a dealer in my area.
Many give aways, and several models at special pricing, so early Christmas shopping did occur.
Eight models secured including the Host’s special selection. A good time.

That sounds like a fantastic way to spend some time and money. :like:
And, I know I picked this little blue beauty up thinking about Gareth’s luv for smaller traditional knives.

I seem to have forgotten to post up my latest addition to my little Case collection. A Swell Centre Jack with Canvas Micarta covers.
Here is my new Case knife. It is my only Case knife. In spite of a couple of glaring design flaws, I’m rather fond of my Marilla. It is quick to deploy and has a nice useful blade shape.

How do you like it?
Wish we could get the razor pattern in that. Nice color, but do I really need another stockman...
A handsome TB Sowbelly!
How many dots on the pen blade, can only see 6, is it a 2024, br as bd spanking new?
I once used one of the single blade sowbellys as an emergency turkey carving knife.
If you like it, give the '47 stockman a try, same blades and about the same size, just a little more svelte. Probably my favorite Case.
@EnginearsThanks for the comparison shots, the 47 looks like a great size. The 75 though! Looks huge, I already find the Sowbelly to be on the heavier side.
For reference I included a couple side by side shots of my Sowbelly to a 47 pattern and a 75 (the large)

The Sheepsfoot is hardier on the Sowbelly than 47.

The Yellow is a CS version 75 pattern

The bottom is another 75 pattern, was a bargain and exclusive to Shepard Hills in SS
I have only seen pictures of a single blade Sowbelly and typically when a SOWBELLY appears at table or auction site they are priced at a premium. I found mine at a retailer, with the original MRSP price point, making it bargain.
CV and CS models are frequently misunderstood by sellers, and good buys can be had compared to SS models😉
Burnt Amber Bone Heritage Jig Barlow. 175 made - I have #69 (my inner 14-year old sense of humor giggles)

One of the only things I saw in SHOT Show videos that piqued my interest was the new Bridgeline series knives by Case. My Longhouse with OD Green Micarta arrived today, and I love it! My only complaint is that I chose the Longhouse over the Highbanks due to it being one-hand openable, but it's awkward to open with one hand (likely, my fault).

Nice looking Barlow !
I’m thinking about the highbanks as it looks uk lega.

I haven’t pulled the trigger on one though, largely because the blade is somewhat shorter than I prefer on a single blade knife, and also because I wasn’t thrilled with the price.

A new to me Stockman arrived Friday.
A eBay find ignored for most part earlier this week providing a bargain.
Better than described, used but never sharpened. Like a butter knife.

Stockman, 47 pattern with two dots , 1997😉
The scales have a greenish tint so unsure the Jig Bone color.
That is nice Nate! :like::cheers: LC
