Title: Who has a LM Crunch?
Post by: Poncho65 on December 04, 2008, 04:13:47 AM
Well with all my other who has threads I'll add the LM Crunch :D

I got it in the mail today and am very pleased with it :tu:

It has to be one of the most complex LM out there  Who would have thought to make it like that?

It seems to be a great pair of locking pliers (and unless you have one you really don't know what I am talking about)

This is a tool you really have to see and feel to really grasp how well built and complex it is

Just wanting to know who has one and what are your thoughts on this magnificent tool :D

Also a quick question does anyone else have a notch in the top jaw of there Crunch?  If so does anyone know what it's for :-\ Thanks in advance :salute: :D

I got a crunch, got a notch and think it was for something with fish-hooks or wire or something. Can't remember exactly what.

FWIW; the other locking pliers multi-tool, the Kershaw A100 has the same notch on it's pliers.

That notch is helpful for holding a pin straight out of the jaws..with a regular pair of locking pliers without that notch, you might get the jaws tight enough around the pin so that it doesn't move..but you also crush the pin.

Thanks for the replies guys :tu: :)

I kinda thought that might have been what it's for but was just asking to make sure thanks  :D

I have used the notch to hold a jigsaw blade and the Crunch becomes a saw handle.

Thanks for the tip :tu:

I've got one with the notch. Don't really have an opinion on it, since I've never really used it.

I got one, and I agree with you here. :multi:

I've always thought the notch was for pulling nails or something, though I like that saw idea. :tu:

Got to handle one that belongs to a friend a while back and must say it's a solid MT. It's on my list of things to get.

Now pics of your Crunch are due  :pok:

Do you think the Crunch cuts the mustard as a standalone tool,or is it better as a complement to another tool or SAK like some others feel?

All depends on what you want. I mean there's not too much that the crunch can't do tool-wise. But due to the design you do give up some extras (saw, scissors, etc.), as well as some ease of use, and gain some extra weight. So I think it's a quite functional tool, but you have to want locking pliers enough.

And of course if you want to carry two tools, this certainly adds some variety. :)

I'll have to get back to ya in a while on that one :tu: I believe with a hex head kit and the Crunch I could probably use it as a stand alone  But I could just pair it with a SAK  :D

Perhaps my Deluxe Tinker and then I would have reg (small) but reg pliers or my Electrician Plus and have just about everything but scissors ;)

But for now I just really don't know :ahhh :D

I could buy one locally but the price would be twice what I got it for :(

But I understand where your coming from :tu: I do like to see things before I buy, but since I am cheap I can't always afford that luxury ::) ;) :D

I actually love my crunch. It has become a regular tool in rotation. I find the pliers to be strong enough to anything I need a smaller set of lockers to do.

I think Leatherman intended the Crunch to serve as a standalone tool, with additional flexibility to work with optional hex bits.   If you have more patience than me, it can serve you well as your EDC (carry on your person) tool.

When I first bought a Crunch (from eBay), I carried it as a standalone EDC tool for a while as an experiment.  It took me too long to deploy the pliers jaws and individual tools.  Ok, I am impatient.   Now, I keep the Crunch in the Maxpedition Proteus pack in my truck and reverted back to carrying more conventional plier multitools on a belt case instead.

I should give the Crunch another try as EDC sometime.  In analyzing which tool(s) I use most often, a knife blade is by far the winner so I now carry a separate folding knife and am no longer as dependent on a multitool to provide a blade.

My Crunch is a few years old.  I don't know how well the current specimens are built.  The Crunches I've seen are Leatherman "old school."  I mean they were very well built -- in the tradition of the original PSTs and SuperTools.  No plastic.   I suspect they are more rust resistant than the current Leatherman tools.

yeah I noticed the old schoolishness of it as  well :D reminded me of like you said the PST and Super Tool  I love that all stainless (no fuss no muss) look about it  Now I need to get a good small hex bit kit :)

A question for anyone who has more than 1 Crunch that may have a few years in manufacturing difference

Have there been any chances or modifications to the Crunch over the years that it's been in production? :)

I just had a quick look at mine poncho, and although it's difficult to get a good view because of the casing, it looks as though there's a spring arrangement in there.

Certainly, the bits don't fal out of mine.

It's quite difficult to describe really, but I think 'spring' is a good word for it. If you look inside the hexagonal hole, on the side of the tool that has the external knurled screw, you should see two parallel "bent" strips of metal that grip the bit.

Maybe yours have just been bent too far or something?

Anyway, if it ain't working - send it to Portland! Best of luck poncho!

::) Yeah I have been wanting a Crunch for a lot longer than most of the stuff on my list but the price always threw me off :( I got some Christmas money and thought I'd go for it :D Of course the person I got it from may have known that it lacked the spring clip thingy :( So it will probably end up in Portland

Unless they agree to just send me a new clip that I can put in myself ::) At least that's what I asked for in the email :D Guess will see how it goes :tu: wish me luck :tu:

Well I never sent the Crunch in but I was thinking about it the other day @ work and I had an idea (yeah I know doesn't happen often ::) ) but I thought if I could put a tiny rare earth element magnet in there it would hold the bits for me wouldn't it  So I just had to take a Kick clip and remove the casing and slipped a small piece of those great magnets in there and low and behold they hold in there rather well now :tu: So as long as this works I am gonna keep it with me here in Tennessee :D If I do have a problem later I will definitely send it in though ::) Sorry no pics yet the Christmas rush is slowing down now maybe I'll have a little more time :tu:

If you can find an "old school" one - get the leather, it's a really good sheath. The Crunch is a unique size though, you won't squeeze it into a PST sheath because of the bit that sticks out!

The new Crunch leather sheaths are rubbish, so if you can't find an old one, I'd go for nylon in that case.

All my opinion of course!

I used my Crunch today to put together an Ikea stool. It is a fantastic piece of kit isn't it?

Thanks guys I was leaning towards a "new" leather Crunch sheath as there is a ebay seller who has them cheap  ::) but I will look for a old leather one or a new nylon one.    :D

Just my opinion Mat, but the new Crunch sheath is the same as the Kick, Fuse, Blast & Core - i.e. crap.

Yeah it's the exact same one that my Blast came with :( I like it for the Blast but was hoping for a different one with the Crunch ::) :D

Hey MM did you ever find an old school leather sheath for your Crunch :pok: if you did can I have it :gimme:

Really if you did find one where did you get it ::)

Isn't the Crunch sheath a different size than the standard old school ones  The only ones I see of the old style are the SuperTool not the 200 either ??? and the PST wonder why no other sizes

Sorry ponch no luck on that front , my Crunch is living in a cruddy no name material sheath as we speak . I will try it in some of my other LM sheaths tomorrow & see how it fits.

If you have a Pulse old school nylon sheath the Crunch fits in there like a glove :D My Pulse resides in my old New Wave sheath with the EP Plus and Solitaire :tu:

I bet that the Pulse leather sheath is probably the same as the Crunches old leather sheath  anybody out there got a leather sheath for a Crunch or a Pulse  old style of course  :pok: :D

I already asked this in the EDC forum but I may get more responses if I ask here as well :D

What could I pair with the Crunch to make it more EDC'able

I've tried but one handed openings are right there with Unicorns, Big Foot, and Sarah Brady joining the NRA.

I even watched a video of it on Youtube..in amazement of course.

I did...perhaps I read the review on the Crunch in the front page :P :D :D :D

I think it was mentioned when it was talking about the hidden features of the Crunch like the hex bit thing.

The Crunch is my favourite full size MT.  I really like the engineering & design smarts that went into it. It is surprisingly robust for such a compact tool, and when you really locking pliers nothing else will do.   :salute:
