Ok I can bring a fair few fixed blades if anyone's interested in them :-\

I can bring a few sak's and swisstools too, but I can't see the point of everyone bringing the same stuff

You might kill me for this, but I think (being totally honest) that the tools are a secondary reason for being there.

Its a shared interest and the "togetherness" is what most of us attending will be after (almost brings a tear to my eye)

However,

I reckon as its YOUR thread you start a list of whose bringing what so there are no unnecessary duplicates (I'm thinking of Ryan on the train)

What do you reckon?

I fancy doing a comparison between the two.

I'll bring a big box of SAKs.  I can't imagine I have any pliers based tools that you lot haven't half a dozen of already :)

I'll probably take a look at the list nearer the time and fill up my case with SAKs not on the list.

If anyone has any new shiny lights please bring them as well.  I've only got one new one, a Nitecore D10.

I'll just chuck as much as I can in the car.

At this rate, I may well have a second "Big Red Shiny Toolbox", one for Leatherman, one for lesser tools  :P

An aside - we should have something to commemorate the event. Something like a Vic Classic with the dates on or something? Affordable, but worth keeping. Anyone got any ideas on that?

Wicked idea...I was looking into embroidered patches earlier today but the minimum order makes it uneconomically viable.

Just bear in mind we can't legally carry the artifact...I would want to carry out memento anywhere.

Then again we can just remove the exacto blade  :police:

I did ask a while back for someone to take a pic of the articfact with the blade and all the holder and lock removed but no one got back to me.  I think it would be OK though.

To be honest I'll just pick up my box of SAKs, highlights are;

Wenger NewRanger 78
Old soldier 1946
A couple of my custom jobs
What a Supertool looks like that has been carried every day for more than 6 years.

I'll also bring a few fixed blades, a couple of folders and a random selection of axes.  Would anyone be interested in seeing a nice old Military sabre?

It's an officers' piece and so hasn't any issue stamps but the general form and style put it around 1780's-1820's.

Not a great pic but it's the bottom one show here.  The scabbard is one I had made up for it.

Whistles? Naaaaah.

Leave it with me boys, I''ll sort something out. Would be useful to know, how much people would be prepared to contribute towards a souvenir though. I thought that £15 each would get us something pretty fine, what say you all?

I've got some ideas, but of cours ethe more we spend - the more options we have.

I'm working on the assumption that whatever "it" is, it has to be engraved / permanently labeled in some way, to commemorate the event. What "it" actually is, isn't that important, but I'd like to make it a surprise, and hopefully something useful. - Do you agree?

£10 is fine with me guys, and at least I know what my "budget" is.

Hmmm. 4 people willing to pay £15, and 1 @ £10, isn't going to get us too far guys...

Dennis at www.gerber-tools.com has agreed to forego the shipping charges if we order the artifacts from him, but we need a few more takers at approx. £15 before I get my credit card out!

Here is one place I have just quickly found http://www.tactical-kit.co.uk/gerber-artifact-mini-tool-463-p.asp .  Know nothing about the site though and typically they are out of stock.  I'm sure that wasn't where I saw them though.

A few places do them for around £8/9 and annoyingly Heinnies are kicking them out for £9.95.  That does include free delivery though.

Not sure what engraving costs really  Any ideas?

I really don't think that being legal EDC is that important tbh. I'm pretty sure that anything we get for £15 isn't going to replace any of my EDC anyway, it's surely just a memento to be displayed somewhere?

Here is an idea.....

Everyone lets sleep on it.

For my part I will make everyone that attends a paracord bracelet so that can be one legal EDC that will remind everyone that attended of what happened on that fateful day.

(I know....but they are the only things I can make with any sort of skill :-[)

Anything else that springs to mind can wait until later in the week.

Lets just remember the reason we are doing this as I for one do not want it to become a headache.

Now we have the paracord things, the urgency will go from the task and it will become less onerous (Micky that means  "causing mental as well as physical strain")

Remember gang, "united in tools, divided in mementoes." :D

I don't really have 58mm SAKs so any one would do me fine.  I know I'd have more use for one than I would an Artifact.  Sebertool would work for me too.
Title: Re: UK Meet Up Tool List First Blood II
Post by: DaveK on January 13, 2009, 11:40:26 PM
I grant you that those little sebertools are legal, but they are also pretty useless, like the True Utility and Swiss-tech things. Nice idea, but if you ever did use it it would be for curiosity or some sense of commitment. I'm sure that all of us going would generally carry a better option around with us everywhere anyway, I know I do!

As I said, I'll go with the flow, but personally, I'd prefer something a bit more interesting, even if it meant it couldn't be EDC'd.

Taking into account the multi buy these guys will do a Rambler for under £16 with engraving.

I'll think you'll my vocabulary is a tad broad :twak: :D

Its a shared interest and the "togetherness" is what most of us attending will be after (almost brings a tear to my eye)

I like the idea and whilst I could certainly do with one of those, wouldn't engraving the back cause the front to deform?  I really don't know but I'd hate to get a neat little card like that only to find its got a bit of a bump in the middle  :-\

Etched should work.  How would the adhesive on the rough side handle the heat from a laser?  Again, I don't know.  Chemical etching is an option but unless you really know what you're doing you can end up with a rough looking job.   What about having them printed?  They will be in a pouch so there shouldn't be a problem with stuff wearing off.

You think a printer that can print on CD's would be able to do it? Not that i have one but i'm sure one of the Brits must have  Give it a layer of laquer or something just to seal it on a bit? :)

Might work.  On a similar theme, a printable PCB etch resist and a bit of acid could be an idea but I'd worry about the neatness of the edges.

[/quote]It all depends on how long a lunch break you've got to touch up your blades I guess :D

But I've been using a fine grit DMT in one format or other for at least 10 years, and probably longer, and it's always managed to put a hair popping edge on all kinds of blades :)

I think an ultra fine one would be a tad excessive for field use, so yeah I'd vote for fine :)

If not the sharpener what about the Spyderco Bug.  Small cheap and can be engraved.  eodtech  has a line on them.
