Title: Budget EDC, Upcycle / Reuse to save money
Post by: detron on August 15, 2013, 08:35:01 PM
OK,  I try to be cheap.     I see things I like, and I just do not like the price, I look for alternatives.

Call it a mindset of survival (or being cheap)  but I walk through stores trying to see what I could use the items on the shelf for, BESIDES what it was intended for.

A sea shell is a great improvised shovel, the plastic holders that mechanical pencil lead lead comes in is small and can safely hold needles, and small fish hooks.  eye bolts can be can become make shift fishing pole eyes.  ..  you get the idea.

I use empty electrical wire or speaker wire spools to store my paracord.  {I will add a picture of this later}

I use pass through crimp caps as paracord jewelry that is cheap  (12 or so for one dollar)
This picture is just the best I could find since I am not at home at the moment

jph0200 had a prime example of this with his key chain drivers.
http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,46699.msg763145.html#msg763145
the audio jack is amazing because it is gnarled for grip, and looks professional (and cheap)

Ranger bands are amazing, and most bike shops will give you old inner tubes for free

Of coarse, there are loads of possibilities for these

Some more ideas that are not as specific to MT.o  but to give a little more insight into the mindset that I strive for

If you have anything that passes as cheaper way to do something, and you would like to share, please do.  together we can share ideas, and make everyone happy!

You and me both lowtech  (your name is perfect for this).

I want some of those pocket clip keyrings that I see people with, but not at $10 or $20.  I am searching for the $2 version

my kind of thinking detron.  I dont have anything to share off hand but I am much the same, my granny called it being "thrifty".  she was coming from the depression era so I understand fully her frame of thinking.  excellent post

Aloha,

Luckily I did not buy a budget MT, or SAK knock-off.  that is not as good!
but yes, I try to do most little things on the cheap, especially things that are thrown away.  All of my friends give me their used altoid tins.  to buy a metal tin like that cost $3?!?!

I even use use these types of bread ties to label cables  (just write on the plastic, pop it on the cable and now I know which power plug in the surge protector goes to what device

I made my Key-Dangler from a suspender Clip  from an old German Bundeswehr load-carrying belt Suspender.
Gotta take a pic. I even have 2 more of the Clips so i can do a before/after (and 2 more pocket clips...)

I cant take credit for the spoon handle idea but it works a treat, the test keys are even easyer to make, old leather gloves look the nicest and they come in 5 handy sizes  :D

Ok,   it is plastic,  but the source is cheap!

Air freshener vent clips for the car.

I bought 4 for a dollar.

It is plastic,  but strong enough to hold 2 hammers.

I dont have a picture to add for this. When in grade school, paper bags from the market would be turned into text book covers/protection. Very durable and thrifty.

Great post, I too really like spoon handle idea, and the garden of bottle-pot flowers.  I used to reuse paper bag for book covers, and indeed they are durable.

Also, I learnt that fabric softener sheet could be re-use many many times until it is totally degraded.  Old clothes use as wiping cloth and eventually turn into char-cloth.  Old CD put at the back of the car back window as reflector...

I knew some of you might have seen this, but my humble contribution  :D

This is the Key-Dangler I made:

(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y102/mattschwarz/stuff_for_sale/gshock023_zps5f078038.jpg) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/mattschwarz/media/stuff_for_sale/gshock023_zps5f078038.jpg.html)

And this is how the Suspender hooks look without the straps. They are hooked under the load carrying belt with a Y-formed Canvas suspender. I think i payed 2-3 Euro for that thing and never used it.

Nice, you don't even need to bend them. Mine are from dollar store steak knives, been using them for quite sometime now and they work great.

to make a very useful and pretty universal mount for a phone, take a large paper clamp like this:

bend the end loops in and put a rubber band to keep the two arms together. Clamp the contraption to whatever you want to, clip the phone in between the arms and hey presto. Mine was improved by adding a bit of rubber sleeving over the loops that hold the phone to protect it and stop it slipping.

We used one on our trip to Mongolia to hold the iPhone that we used as a GPS, and when it wasn't doing navigating we could attach it on to a handle on the van and use it as a sort of improvised Go Pro camera. Worked very well!

Absolutely love this thread - superb stuff y'all :tu:

I have a small contribution for now... you can buy very cheap silver backed bubbled wrap and use it as insulation for all sorts of things. Originally, I got some to make window screens for the camper van, them I started making things like sheaths for Nalgene bottles from the offcuts. Brilliant for food and drink etc :)

One is take an old tire rim and mount it to a wall to hang water hoses or air hoses on it.

there seems to be a new support rubber bracelet out every week or so and then its tossed in the junk drawer.  ive repurposed mine to act as a cool ranger band.  it works great on the tin but i haven't tested it on anything else.

Great thread! I reuse old tires to make my garden in. As far as EDC goes, I took the fittings off an old Alice pack and made new shoulder straps for my current EDC bag.

when I was younger, and my friends got new bicycle chains, I would take the old, clean it real good, and use it as a "though" wallet or key chain.

YES I AM CHEAP!

but sometimes that makes the hunt more fun.  :tu:

I love pocket clips for my SAKs, but as I usually buy cheap SAKs, the idea of investing $10 to hang a $4 SAK is hard to swallow.  Even on my $25 SAKs, $10 is too much.

my plastic ones further back in this thread are great, but bigger than I wanted.

so after weeks of pondering and walking different stores looking for items I could improperly use.  >:D

I found my solution in these

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_095643.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_095643.jpg.html)

Yep, picture hangers.  they are cheap and come in a variety of sizes.

here I started with a 20 lbs hanger

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100101.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100101.jpg.html)

Straightened the base out like so

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100206.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100206.jpg.html)

cut it low enough to leave the entire hole with my ST300 replaceable cutters

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100452.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100452.jpg.html)

used the ST300 to file down the rough edges and remove the sharp corner.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100605.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100605.jpg.html)

next I located a fulrum point for my bend.  a VIC ink pen

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100643.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100643.jpg.html)

then holding enough of the metal to be your "pop out" area and push down to create your bend

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100755.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100755.jpg.html)

now I have a small clip,  this size one will be better suited for my smaller SAKs, but I wanted to show the size.  You can buy these in several sizes and I think I have a new source of pocket clips.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100906.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100906.jpg.html)

if you like a tighter fit on your pocket so it cannot come out easily, then just squeeze it closed a little more

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100939.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/Pocket%20Clip%20design%202/20131017_100939.jpg.html)

I think the 30 lbs hanger will be a better solution, and I will make some of those in the near future.

Thanks for reading.

I brought my Sportsman out today, after some days with the Spartan with the clip mod. It felt a little uncortable so I took a paper clip and made a suspension clip. Holding out pretty good, I'll try to get some pics to post. Takes about 4min to make.

Not cheap, thrifty! Being a single dad with 2 growing preteens, you have to figure out how to make the most of the money. As to that I haven't bought any new toys for myself, I've been spending most if any extra money on clothes, food and more food.

I like being thrifty.  and if I can accomplish the same thing for a fraction of the cost, I am going to use the cheaper method.

Do you periodically refresh them or anything? I can just see a lot of potential for nasties growing in there!

I do the same with 5l containers. Once in a while, I use the water in the toilet or to wash the floor. Rinse the containers and refill them. Since I drink bottled water, I've always got a new supply of containers, too.

Not yet. I put a small amount of bleach in the water to kill any nasties and it stores longer.

This is not so much of an upcycling, but just a reminder that repairs do save money, too.

The Velcro on my Swisstools sheath did no longer stick, so I removed teh Vic Logo and the Velcro hooks and put in a snap closure.

I think the Tec Accessories A-3 glow fob looks pretty cool, but costs more than what I want to spend for something that just looks cool. I made 4 of these for the price of one A-3.

I used a cheap 3" plastic line level, v10 glow powder and 30 minute clear epoxy. The glow powder and epoxy are well documented on other forums, but I haven't seen the use of the line level before.

(I also filled the eyes of 10 metal skull beads with the glowing epoxy and still have a small amount of epoxy and glow powder left.)

That is sweet bro!!  I want one ;). I need creativity and talent.

I found a great way to store my SAK scales

RAM packaging

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/SAKs/20131202_183057.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/SAKs/20131202_183057.jpg.html)

Plus scales fit snugly and do not move or slide.

regular scales are loose, but I just put the paperwork that came with the RAM and it is all better.

What I like is I can see the scales, and it is not too big.
some people may like the peg board ready option.

Cut off the fingers of cheap surgical gloves and you have an elastic sleeve to fit lots of different stuff, e.g. your flashlight.

We do this some trick with muzzle loaders when it raining. We put a finger over the barrel and take the wrist and put it over the cap.

I used to carry one of those, it's all full of cuts and missing pieces of fabric. I don't like the clips very much for holding the keys, they sometimes opened. I'll try them with SAKs, they might work great.

OK, I had a problem,  I like to carry the full Leatherman Bit Kit.  However, it is awkward in my Skinth.
I hardly ever use them, but I WANT to have them if I need them.

so I got one of these empty laptop RAM packages.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/20131210_193808.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/20131210_193808.jpg.html)

cut the peg hanger plastic off (It is clear, so hard to see in the picture above.

and it barley fits all the bits (I do not carry the micro bit, since I have one in my Charge.

(http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz255/detronphillips/20131210_193945.jpg) (http://s833.photobucket.com/user/detronphillips/media/20131210_193945.jpg.html)

it is about 4mm thinner than the two bit cards stacked.  it is shorter than the bit cards, but it is wider.  However, it now fits comfortably in my Skinth!

You will notice that the bits are "standing up" instead of laying down like they do on the cards

I put a piece of electrical tape around it just to make sure it does not come open.

How about using rubber bands? From a piece of bycicle tire? You can get that from a repair shop at 0$. Lasts longer, easier to put on/take off.

I actually have several "ranger bands"  (Inner tube rubber bands)  the only problem with those and rubber bands are the friction grip that gets transferred to the sheath.

I am still working the issue, and have a few other closure ideas in mind, but for now I am just happy it fits properly in my Skinth!

Just wanted to know if someone had already used the caps or the "paint" and if it really works. I was thinking of filling one of those perfume sample vials with the paint, than get some split ring on the lid to use it in a keychain.

I would be afraid of breaking the vial. TZhe paint itself will glow ok - But think about buying some glow pigments, then you can mix it with clear epoxy glue and fill a vial of your choosing.
Title: Re: Budget EDC, Upcycle / Reuse to save money

I can always try to find some hollow copper or other material tube with some holes drilled to put the vial inside. That would protect it.

The epoxy glue option you sugest will probably make for a more resistant vial...

That's something you can pick up for free (over here) in order to help carrying packages tied together with string, similar to what the parcel hook is for, but as some sort of handle.

True but they're too thick for my liking. I don't use a pocket clip often and I want them as discreet as possible. It's why I salvaged the staplers, they're flat are have a copper coating that is less reflective/eye-catching than silver  ;)

A few things you can do to solve this problem:
1. Add a mini gate clip to the P-7 like the pic below, so you can switch it around between different tool.

Ikea suspension clips.

I like this idea and wish I had something like this.  I have one P-7 clip in which I have to take off/put on whatever sak I want to carry!  I would love to have a couple others.  :)
A few things you can do to solve this problem:
1. Add a mini gate clip to the P-7 like the pic below, so you can switch it around between different tool.

I tried the first one but it changes the way the keyring rides in my pocket, which bugs me!  :)  I went ahead and ordered a couple of the knockoff ones.

Thanks for the link!  I never knew they were around as knockoffs and that cheap!  Heck I think it was like $12 or so for my P-7 clip!   :tu:

Great thread idea. I recycle old dirty lanyards and remove the clip so my daughter can make belt danglers from paracord.

Whenever I have to discard an old (back) pack, i try to save clasps and buckles and webbing if any reasonable lengths are there.
Helped me repair and mod some other bags and packs over time.
the chin strap locks from Motorcycle helmets are nice, too.

If you get overpriced coffee at Starbucks or know someone that does, the green plastic stoppers they put in the drinky hole on the hot drinks makes a great epoxy stirrer, spreader, stuff poker and can be easily cut and shaped for other uses while staying decently strong.

man, this is the thread for me! Recycling rules!

Today I took some particle board that used to be an entertainment center, and made slats so my daughter could use her new bedframe (no boxspring yet), after sleeping with the mattress on the floor for far longer than I care to admit...

I have also added shelving to my utility room with wood from the same entertainment center.

When cleaning out my office today, it struck me one of my best tips is learning a handful of knots. I'm not talking fancy stuff, just a handful of bends, hitches, and loops you can trust. Knowing just a few knots has saved me a lot of work and running around, and, also, money, as tying up things doesn't cover them in glue, doesn't force you to cut up stuff you can use again, opens up new fields of use for items, etc. I know this post got pretty abstract, but it's one of those “err... you can use it for... everything?” cases.

Bump. This thread can't disappear!

I used a piece of string to suspend my sak in my pocket until I fashioned a clip from a picture hanger(like Detron. A Detron-clip maybe? 8))

I'm so happy that I've found this thread, I don't have loads fur EDC but I really enjoy reusing and repurposing various items.

This one gave me twice the fun, a nice Cigar box turned into a place to keep a couple of Razors, pretty straightforward: seal the box with a good quality oil, make a cardboard cut out in the shape of the Razors and cover in felt.

No one likes getting poked and bruised by the key ring on their dangler that is held at a right angle to the dangler.  Use a fishing swivel between the dangler and what you're hanging from it instead of a key ring, and everything will stay flat in your pocket.  Here's a picture of one of my knives on a dangler made from an aluminum fence tie, showing a fishing swivel between them. The next picture of fishing swivels was from the internet.  I'm not endorsing that company, I'm just using their picture.  I gave a step by step on bending the dangler out of the fence tie in my SOG PowerLock January challenge thread in the SOG forum.

I´ve just made a clip from a wall hanger, as described on page one of this thread.
It works just great and is done within five minutes. It won´t last forever, but I think it will do it some time!

Thanks for the inspiration. These suspender clips are rather expensive, while the wall hangers get for three bucks a dozen.

I have nothing new to add other than to say my collection is budget and recycled.  I got nearly all my tools second/third and possibly fourth hand.

A few of my recycled favorites include my Old Swisschamp, OG Wave, JPST, Opinel, and Cadet 2 all which were bought very used and very much needing new life.

Lately I've been recycling everything! Plastic bottles, tins, paper. All food scraps go into a compost pile. So far so good. Now just trying to figure out something to crush the plastic with to make it smaller.

At my other home the city gave us 2 trash cans.  1 was for typical waste and the other for only recyclables.

I threw out my "regular" trash once a month ( pick up was weekly ) while my recycle container was piled over ( pick up was every other week ).

We are the same here in my condo our recycle container goes out every few days while out "regular" trash goes out maybe weekly.

Interesting.  Here in SoCal you will be fined if you throw recycles in the "regular" trash.  I've seen some neighbors ( when I lived in a house ) have their trash be refused for pick up because it had recyclables in it.   Now in apartment complexes and such this would be a huge PITA to enforce so it's not.

I try to recycle everything as much as I can. Papers I can burn to light fires or make into paper logs for burning. Plastic is hard to do anything with (bags and bottles) but they accept those at the center. Any special plastics or thick I keep for milling or repair of other things.

Hmm maybe its city to city.  I know the news reported at one time residents in the beach area were being fined.  In my former neighborhood they flat out refused to collect trash with recyclables in it.

I do that too, usually with the free phonebooks that lay around my apartment complex's mailroom for months (and eventually just gets thrown out).

I also scavenge scrap wood and screws/hardware from broken down furniture. Most of the shelves I put up since moving in came from one battered old entertaientertainment center

awesome!  you solved the biggest issue I have with normal bags,  they are meant to be filled from the bottom up, in layers, when I really strive for vertical storage, like you did.  otherwise you end up with dead area at the top, and a jumble of mess below

I make no claim as to the effectiveness of this setup. It just sounded interesting and looks dirt-cheap to put together. An 'air conditioner' made from recycled soda bottles.

This thread should be at the top, because its great.
BUMP!

I love the organizer by theredel above, I assume you can use any plate?

Here's my addition, take a microfiber cloth, and sow a snug pouch for your multitool to help protect from scratches! Slimmer than a leather pouch, also keeps tool clean, at the expense of (maybe) looks and impact resistance(compared to leather). I think leather for bigger tools, this for pocket/keychain size? :)
I don't worry so much about drops, so this is perfect and not very bulky for me.
You can clean your glasses with it too!

Oh, and with some phone covers, you can tuck your swisscard in. It might make the phone too thick for comfort, or something.
Make sure the swisscard wont scratch your phone and/or break!
It works fine for me.
