Title: March(ing) back - discontinued challenge
Post by: Shuya on February 19, 2019, 07:42:50 AM
Hi folks,

having not done a challenge in two months and because my own minimal throwback challenge was going good (but I had to choose for one badge, so I took the minimal badge), I wanted to gain the discontinued badge.

So I thought march may be a good month for that.

Maybe one or the other might join in the party. Time to carry all your old BSA knifes, Wengers, old leathermans, whatever as long as its out of production.  :hatsoff:

Looking forward to it.

Michael

I already have the badge so I won't officially join but will probably post in the thread since most of my tools and knives are discontinued anyway.

I have most of the badges for the next few challenges (with the exception of the SURGE, I need to upgrade to full 30 days ;) ) so no harm in posting pics of some nice discontinued LMs :dd: :D

I think today I will gather all the tools I that might come in handy to one spot, and store the "new" ones away.

AFAIK we dont have to be monogamic in this one, right? So no need to carry the same tool the whole time, unless you want to.

Testing how I upload photos (I don't do much social media.. like at all. lol)

Due to workplace policies I will most likely be sticking to the Tomo or LM P4 on week days in addition to my usual Jetsetter (which I think is also a discontinued model as it is the 8GB Apple version with the Scissors/Nail file/Package opener) and give my 84mm Salesman/Smaller Climber some fresh air on the weekends.

My second contender for this challenge arrived in the mail today!  :mail: :woohoo:

And since somewhere on this planet it is already 1 March i am going to start this challenge  :drink:

First i would like to introduce my two contenders. Ladies first and a big welcome to Scully the Wenger Classic 16! Some of you know already about this, but some of the items in my household have names. So it seemed only fair to name the 2 tools for this challenge as well.
Names were completely chosen randomly and any resemblance to real persons is completely coincidental  :D

This is how Scully arrived in the mail today. Of course we cannot leave her like that and the cleaning crew went to work.

After the cleaning crew Mr. WD40 and Mr. Toothbrush went to work, Scully looked much better.

Title: Re: March(ing) back - discontinued challenge
Post by: SirVicaLot on March 01, 2019, 01:09:35 AM
No rest for the wicked (according to Godsmack) and so Scully was put to work as soon as she was nice and shiny.
First task was to install wire hangers on the back of a wood project i had finished yesterday. The awl poked a hole large enough for the drill bit to grip, and the philips screwdriver finished the job with the screw.
One task down many more to go!

Edit: Forgot one photo. Scully also had no issues cutting the wire  :tu:

Day 1.

Black friday mood. Daughter refused to sleep much (she is growing teeth atm), so here I am at the office nipping tea.

Grabbed few goodies, lets see what the day will bring.
Two STs: Wenger Soft Touch in the pocket together with the Nitecore, Supertool in bag, for the large projects.

Day 1 of 30

I am going to start of with this BO beauty considering it is BO Friday :tu: it is a LM Blast :like: The toolset on these are really great and almost identical to the LM Wave (minus the SE blade, no diamond file, Phillips instead of bit driver and no OHO ;) ) a great tool that just wasn't received well due to the Zytel handle inserts I guess  one that I personally really  :like: though :salute:

Nice photo Steve  :salute:

The day for Mulder and Scully started with a dog walk and a photo shooting.
Throughout the day they opened packages, boxes and also helped me start a new wood project. Here are some photos of the 2 in action  :tu:

Day 1:

Added Tomo to work pull chain where it will hang out until needed.

All of the locks at my new job are RFID or keypad so no need for keys anymore which is kinda neato.

Also have a bladeless package opener and a couple screwdrivers on the chain.

Well if the collective feels the Wave is not a truly discontinued model, just say so.

I was going to switch it up and use my older Waves, but not if the majority feel they are NOT discontinued.

I think it technically counts as they are indeed no longer made.

It also means I can pull out my Red Cross Charge so
Title: Re: March(ing) back - discontinued challenge
Post by: Poncho65 on March 02, 2019, 05:22:12 PM
They did officially discontinue the Red Cross Charge so..... :tu:

The line does blur with a lot of discontinued tools it seems

The Surge changed some tools, a plier head and the appearance a bit but the name stayed the same ??? We consider the OG Wave and the second generation Wave to be different for the same reasons and I have also considered the OG Surge and the current Surge to be different but others may not see it that way :dunno:

I guess if it has had a redesign and some changes, then I guess the new iteration is the current model and the previous should be considered discontinued :salute:

7.30pm, almost forgot to post. :ahhh

The Mrs. and daughter dont feel well today, weather is 4℃ and wet, so stay home day with indoor duties.
Took my Camillus 99 out again, love the knife and feeling, too bad they are not made anymore (got one NIB in reserve. Just in case )

Hardcore duties like fishing comforters out of boiling water (the can opener is a decend hook for this) or cutting pie.

Busy day guys!  :tu:

Mulder and Scully had robot cleaning duty. Also had to install a new protective foam on the robots bumper. I realized a while ago that the robot would leave black marks on our baseboards. Being an older model it does not have the soft bumpers yet, that most modern ones do have.
So i installed my own using cheap window sealant. Works like a charm  :tu: After a months or so it works itself off though, so i gotta replace it regularly.

Mulder also opened more boxes and letters and had to cut some wire that i used as removable cable organizer.

Day 3.

Needed some fresh air, so I took my bike and rode to our place at the river.
Took my bike repairkit with me and a MT for the pliers, LM Blast this time.
Didnt have any need for it, will cut some twigs for decoration later.
The blast is awesome EDC tool with a great long blade (one of the longest you can get in a midsize MT so far).

So Im sitting here watching the river and birds with my binocs.

BO Kick with CC today  the Zytel line was always a good line to me but many didn't like the inserts and I guess they were the majority  :dunno: the whole Zytel line did last for close to if not over 8 years but finally was discontinued  I have a couple of each except for the Core (if I ever find a cheap one in BO that will change though ;) ) also the Kick is a direct replacement of the LM Sideclip :salute:

Day 5.

Wenger SI again with a different buddy than yesterday.
Its really amazing how good I am going with only two layers in my daily office job, when I leave the tool in the bag, where I can grab it in no time.
The minimal challenge was eye opening in that way, but for outdoor tasks or hikes I rather grab something larger.

What astonished me was when I placed the Pulse next to a Rebar, they are almost the same size, except for the tool layout.

Lets see how I get by again. Feeling ill, and stormy weather will make me stay home most likely.

Not on a regular basis. It is password protected and contains some important documents for emergencies but all of those documents are also on my cell phone it's more of a back up to a back up.

I mainly use it as it has the scissors and nail file but doesn't have a true blade so it passes the sniff test if/when security actually checks my stuff.

My other option before finding one was to snap off the blade of a Classic but I lucked out on this on at a flea market and found it in the original box.

Used Mulder today to work on a birdhouse that got lots of hits during last summers hail storms. It had been used in spring, and i think the bird family enjoyed it  ;)

Now i re-stained it, patched some holes, added a new roof and then finished it. Used the screwdriver on mulder as a prybar to open the stain and the sealer. Then used the Philips to mount it back in its place.

Realized after i had snapped the picture that i had grabbed the wrong stain

County Comm's special versions differ in blade steel (D2 vs AUS-8) and the frame-lock/liner (Titanium vs steel).

That black version was last year. I have one those too and it's an excellent watch pocket knife/box slicer.

The one thing I do not like is that the tiny clip on the back is almost impossible to open enough to use so I always keep a key chain bead on mine.

..
Yes, that is a Space Marine helmet bead.

For the Emprah!

Well, with the job I’m on right now, I do have to cut some smaller cardboard boxes up. The Wave blade isn’t cutting it. Dulls too fast. I had to touch the blade up twice tonight and it needs it again now.

I will have to rethink a knife for work. The blade on my SI did fine. The JE Made blade is awesome as is my Spyderco Tenacious.  But as they don’t fit the bill for this challenge, I’ll have to find something else.

Guess for now I’ll go back to my SI...

Yeah, it took me several years of watching evil bay like a hawk to find one in my price range. Prior that that I carried a Compact for years. Made the mistake recently of swapping the Compact's scales to Copper for looks and it ended up being too heavy so it got relegated to my collection chest.

Debating on buying another to try out the SB+ titanium scales.

More annoying to open due to less of the nail nick being exposed and no tweezers or toothpick. Also has the pointed nail pick tip rather than the screw driver.

On the other hand, it looks like a USB drive so its much more incognito. I'd guess the average TSA agent wouldn't catch it.

Been out out for a walk with my daugher in the woods this morning (had a day off...) while it was only storming and not raining yet.
With me my Wenger Ranger 56.

Cut a walking stick for her (more like  a walking-twig  :pok: than a stick...) and found some wild chives, I know some spots where they grow like grass. Took some with me for eating at home.

Day 9.

The next stormy and really rainy day here in germany. Winds up to 100km/h in my region, plus heavy rain. Not inviting for going out.
So the usual inhouse duties. Cutting cake, helping with the ingrediends of home-baked bread, small cutting jobs around the day.
Perfectly equipped.

Day 10.

Another stormy day with heavy rain, forecast send out warnings for heavy storm. Wind 130km/h in my area.

Daughter loves scented smoke, so I had to light a coal. Those coals are way too big and long burning, so I usually saw them into 4 parts when using frankincense. A small perl of 3mm diameter makes the whole living room smell.

Carried a Wenger S18 today.

Day 10:

Tons of rain here recently so the grass has grown like weeds.

Carried Golfer and LM Sideclip while I looked at new lawn mowers as my old manual push mower just isn't going to cut it anymore.

:nanadance:       :nanadance:

We’ve had a run of bad luck with can openers lately. We had one manual and one electric that worked great for many years.

Then the electric opener broke. We tried another and it was such junk that I tossed it in the trash.

Then our 20+ year old manual died. We have had three since and none will work worth a crap. I don’t know what the problem is. They won’t turn the can once the lid is punctured.

I have with me today the mighty Pulse :viking: it had the same toolset as the PST II with the exception of a PE blade vs the combo edge on the PST II :tu: I really wished they had updated the Pulse with push tab locks and brought it on through instead of discontinuing it in the a great Discontinuation of 04 :-\ The rocker locks on it are a bit fiddly sometimes but once you get the hang of it they aren't that bad :salute: it is the little brother of the Supertool 200 just like the Rebar is the little brother to the Supertool 300

Thanks!!  The SI is always in my pocket or lunchbox when at work. For this challenge, at least thru next week, the PST will be at work with me. I need the needle nose pliers for the job I’m currently doing. We pick tonight for next month’s job rotation. I’d like to stay where I’m at, but no guarantees!

If I end up on a different job, I won’t need the piers, but the SI will be in my pocket.   Sometimes I do carry my PX instead.

Been inside the house all day braving a blizzard. As far as i know the governor declared a state of emergency and National Guard was activated in some areas. We were getting ready for a cold night, but just got power back.

As i wrote in another thread already: Thank you to all the service technicians, police and first responders that were out there all day in up to 85mph wind gusts to get power back running and helping people  :hatsoff:

Title: Re: March(ing) back - discontinued challenge

Movie night for me is Chipotle + one or two of my favorite movies on the couch in my house rather than going out to a theater (most of the movies in the last few years haven't been worth the money so I just wait a few months and watch them on prime.)

Tonight's movie night is/was a steak burrito with queso & chips (beats popcorn any day) and I am going to watch He Never Died (2015 with Henry Rollins) followed by Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1990).

First movie's protagonist (Rollins) speaks as little as possible while Oldman and Roth in R&G are the complete opposite. Both great movies in their own way.

Day 16:

Breaking down boxes from my recent move with the RC Charge and found an unopened box from over a decade ago when I moved out of my parent's place that I guess I just kept moving without looking into.

Inside was old boy scout gear including a Wenger SI marked 96 which makes me think I had this for one of my old summer camp trips and then forgot about it.

Day 17:

While it’s “officially”  Day 17, I am still up from the 16th. Haha

But I went digging thru my box of SAKs and found this gorgeous girl!  A 4 layer Wenger Handyman.

I’ll be carrying this all day today (Sunday). Not much planned. Maybe a run to Lowe’s for supplies. I bought two ceiling fan/light units to install in two bedrooms. Hopefully the Handyman can help me!!

Nice tool Poncho, would be interested in one of those too

Day 17

Mulder and Scully unpacked and assembled a new office chair today. Well at least half way. To mount the armrests i had to get a larger screwdriver. Not because Mulder or Scully could not handle the job. But whoever designed those stupid armrests was a smurfing idiot. The screws for that area had slits large enough to use two screwdrivers on them. At the same time....  Also the threads were not aligned properly with the holes and covered with fabric. Anyway, after a lot of smurfing the chair was assembled.

Regarding SAKs I dont see much difference. They are just different unless you step really far back to the old Soldiers.

The MTs are just the opposite. While SAKs evolved for more than 100years, MTs are just little more than 30years old, and the big steps in handling happened in the last 15...20 years. Compare a OST or PST to a Rebar or Charge or Swisstool.
Cant imagine doing hard work with my PST. Maybe because I didnt grow up with the the first one.

Day 18:

Took my Small Climber out today. Used the scissors on a loose thread on my pants. Bout it.

Not much of an opinion on changes for SAKs over the years other than missing new versions of the 84mm scissors.

I also like the old smooth Wenger scissors much much much more than the serrated kind, I know they are supposedly self sharpening but if you use them to trim finger nails like I often do you have to spend a lot more time with the nail file to keep them from snagging on things afterwards. This is one of the biggest reasons I prefer to carry a Vic over a Wenger even though I love the Wenger wrench and pliers.

I have no problems with the old tools, as a matter of fact i like some of them better than the new ones. This is especially true for the PST II. I have a Skeletool that i consider far inferior to the PST. Both have almost the same size and form factor, but the PST has way more tools packed. Even the pliers on the PST are slightly larger. The only point for the skeletool would be the exchangeable bits, but they are not even the good ones, but this half size thin bullsmurf.
They even had to make holes everywhere in the frame to reduce weight i guess.  It just feels like that Tim Leatherman spent years on improving and designing the PST, while the Skeletool was probably smurfed out in half a year. Sorry for the rant, i guess it is just the times we live in.

Back to the challenge:

Mulder and Scully did not have too much work today. Besides opening letters and packages i used Mulders pliers to remove a stubborn screw from the desk top i am assembling.

Poncho, one thing came into my mind last night about the old tools is the way better space usage, not only regarding the number of tools but the size for example of the mainblade.
compare a Blast blade to a Rebar one. not only is it larger but thicker and less flexible (feels better).
Bad example in that point are the swisstools where the blades are so short compared to the handle lenght.
Thats why I still love the Pulse and Blast, awesome tool size for the bulk.
In the newer Juice they shortened the blade even more...

That is a good point and I even noticed how big the Wenger blade is in the pic you had above :like: I always did like the shape of the main blade on Wenger better than Vic :salute: I have an S18 (I think it is but always forget ::) ) with Evo scales like yours and love that knife :tu:

I have with me a LM Blast today :tu: This was my second LM (it replaced my PST) The choice was made for this MT when I first joined MTO :tu: It actually beat out the Wave for me back then :o I bought it in a gift tin that I still have, with a LM clip watch  I really loved the watch and it lasted a couple years as my EDC work watch before finally dying :salute: I carried the Blast for a while and it was replaced by an OG Supertool but I still carried the Blast off and on for several years and even recently I have carried it :tu: A great tool that has a really nice toolset (same tools as a Wave except it doesn't have a serrated blade) it is part of the Zytel line of tools that were discontinued around the time the Rebar was released  and as you saw earlier in the challenge, it also came in BO :like:

I have with me the only supertoll that wasn't called a Supertool  ;) The mighty Core :tu: It has a Zytel insert and that gives it the boxy look at the pliers instead of the normal taper that usually comes with a Supertool :salute:

I have broken two Cores  :ahhh Both had to do with the locking system and probably the reason I have never broken a ST300 in this manner (as they worked the bugs out of it in the Core :salute: )

Today is a LM day. Joining the PST today is that beat up Crater I resurrected. It’s not pretty, but it is sharp and makes an excellent work knife!

Day 21:

Day of brain draining meetings with admin staff that have either no idea what they are going on and on and on about or people that haven't been doing relevant work in 10+ years but still oversee us. Fun times.

Pulled out my blue Wenger Commander as so we can be blue together.

Here’s the story on that. I came across the knife on eBay...

It was in rough shape, but it had the screw drivers in it and they were pristine.   Well, I had a plain blade Crater and bought the rough T for the tools.

I did the swap and used all the “bad” parts to make a beater knife. It’s ugly but it IS sharp!!!

I don’t know what the previous owner did to it but the serrated part of the blade was destroyed.

I’m kind of glad it has a blunt tip now. Those Craters have a damn needle sharp tip. I’m always poking myself with a nice one!!  Haha

How big are the Craters? Similar to an Endura? Larger? I like folding knives around the Delica in length/heft because I have fairly small hands but would also love to have a back up screw driver like many of the Crater models contain.

The new LM Free T series me has hoping they will be a nice alternate to our SAKs.

Thanks. There was a punchfest (hope its the right word) right in front of my Hotel yesterday evening between two arab youtubers who insulted each other via internet and brought their followers with them. 400 of them plus 100 policemen with pepperspray and stuff. What a mess. Was watching the whole thing from my hotelroom at the 33rd level, wanted to go out but didnt dare to.

World has changed...  :twak:

Day 22 of 30

I have with me today my first non LM tool in the challenge  :o :D It is a Paladin Tools Power Play PT-510 by SOG (try saying that 5 times fast :D ) it is from a set of 3 tools that SOG did for this company and I had intentions of getting all 3 at the time I purchased this one but sadly it was not meant to be  :D The one I have is the smallest in the series and has a tool compliment that is geared toward electrical work  Sure is a quarky tool to use otherwise ;)

Side view shows that they limited the ability for adding tools in and also tapered the plier head :salute:

But it came with a very nice old school brown leather sheath :dd:

Mulder assisted in removing a metal hanger from an old fence post. Good thing the screwdriver also works when not fully snapped into place. Otherwise the PST would have been too large to fit in between the hanger. :tu:

It is Supertool Saturday and I have with me today an OG Supertool  :like: I really like how slim this version is compared to the rest of the series :salute: If they could have made the locking system just a bit more like the ST300 and kept the slimmest then this would still be the tool in production today IMO  Love the toolset of this as it is the same across the whole Supertool range and the toolset (slightly modified)  of the Rebar as well :tu: This tool is built like a tank :D

Day 24.

Packing my bike bags, as like Ponchos request with a certain MT.
Together with my repair kit and a full bar of bits I should be ready.

To be honest I dont really like the Charge. Its date 04/04 and my first quality tool Ive bought from the first money I made on the job. Wanted to buy *the best*, and here I am. Miss the scissors and hate the CC, so I later bought a Wave which is my *I dont care Beater*, and after German Knife Law change on OHO I mostly switched to Swisstools...

Today I started to make a shelf for files at our desk. Carved a bevel to the edges and smoothed them with sandpaper, oil was applied later.
Against all reports the Demo Knife holds an edge quite well and is razor sharp after a few strops.

Day 30

The last day was a pretty easy one. I was supposed to break down a bed, but that did not happen. So Scully only removed some dirt from my fingernails with her file.

Being my first challenge I really enjoyed the process of posting something every day and finding a way to put my tools to work. In those 30 days they mastered all tasks i threw at them, and only one time i was forced to reach for a dedicated tool (being a longer and massive screwdriver).
The most used tools on the Wenger Classic 16 a.k.a. Scully were the scissors and the nail file. The nail file for the obvious use and the scissors to open all sorts of packages, wrap, cut (plastic) fence and so on.
The most used tools on the PST II a.k.a. Mulder were the Phillips screwdriver and the large screwdriver. The large screwdriver mostly as a light pry bar to open all sorts of cans.

I love both of these tools and will carry both of them in the future. They never disappointed and performed great despite their age  :tu:

Thank you to my fellow challengers for keeping up with this challenge and posting some great tools!  :hatsoff:
