Title: small or pointless things that you enjoy
Post by: detron on January 09, 2016, 01:23:07 AM
I know there are little things that can make your day, or invoke a reaction similar to when you smell something you have not smelled in years and you are instantly mentally transported to when and where that smell was.  I have several of these, though I do not have a running list of them because I never made an inventory of them.

here is the one I just experienced again that made me thing of doing this thread.

when the one drop of dish liquid repels all the oil of the top of a dish full of water.
to me this is even better when you get the dish so full that the surface tension of the water has the water level above the rim of the dish, and the addition of one drop of dish liquid cause the water to spill over the sides.

the smell of a new book  (also the smell of an old book too)

another example is sort of a love-hate.
when I have a migraine (the hate part) and it is snowing like crazy outside.  I go lay in the snow and the cold helps ease the pain.

so,  what of some little things that you are fond of?

One thing that I was always fond of was putting on sneakers after a long, hot sweaty day of working/skiiing/ rollerskating. They are just so cool and comfortable, like  being in a cloud.

This is gonna be a great thread!!

The soap thing is true, or watching transmission fluid hit wet ground.

Signing into my bank account and seeing I've been paid.

Seeing my package on the doorstep.

There was a specific perfume one of my ex's used and I have only ever smelled it one other time in the last 4 years.

One thing I enjoy more than anything is organization. It makes me feel at ease.

The smell of coffe brewing, bacon frying up and fresh baked bread come to mind. Now i'm want to eat something.
The smell of a summer rain shower.
I love to watch thunder storms roll in.
Coyotes howling in the distance.
Frogs arguing around the pond
Birds singing early in the morning

Loved listening to my kids sleep.  Loved hearing them breathe and watching them.   They look so peaceful and beautiful I could sit there hours.

Most music from the late 60's and 70's teleports me back in time.

Staring into the twinkling coals of a fire when the flames have died down.

The sounds of the sea

Quiet

Seeing something you designed work perfectly first time.

Ghost poos, the best poos in the world. Self flushing and self wiping, you know you've had a poo, but there's no evidence I ever existed in the pan or on the toilet paper.

The taste of the first picked fruits or veg that you have grown that season (particularly cherry tomatoes and strawberries)

Wringing slip gauges together

When my niece first called me Uncle Alan

Bacon

The feeling of "clean" when you have a bath or shower after being away from amenities for too long

The hypnotic swirling of a large flock of birds overhead

The first time your car springs into life after you've had a problem

Watching an oil film clear on a river/canal/wet road clear with a tiny squirt of soapy water

The crunch of freshly fallen snow beneath your feet

Perfectly cooked scrambled eggs

Bacon and egg sandwiches.

Watching birds, robins and crows in particular.

Waking up,then realising its my day off,and going back to sleep

Having a dog come up and greet you

That thread is wonderful! Just like the start of the movie "Amelie"

Small things that make me feel great are -

Birdsong, especially in spring.
Sturdy logs of hardwood, their weathered, but still strong surface
handling an old tool, like a plane or a saw, the smell of carbon steel
The smell of freshly cut pine or larch, the smell of the sea
When the milk mixes in the brilliant Barry's tea my wife makes, and it keeps on turning, creating small vortices...

Also, the smell of .. fall or winter or just ... cold. My friend always laughs at me when I say it smells of cold :D

walking
having a full wallet, lol
my best friend being around me even if we don't talk or don't do anything

:tu: one of my favorite movies of all time.  For whatever reason,  I really love french films. Hugo is another great one.

I am also a big fan of the smell of fresh cut wood in general, but pine is particularly nice. Also love cedar.

Getting up early and having a quiet cup of coffee before the kids wake up.
Rain on a tent flysheet.
The smell of fresh Golden Virginia rolling tobacco.
Skimming stones into rivers.
When my son shouts upstairs for his mum, but calls her by her name instead of saying mummy.
Riding my bike on super smooth tarmac.
Licking envelopes.

Strong tea at the perfect temperature. Just cooled enough to not burn my throat as I slug it back on a cold day.

When my son squirms in between his mother and me in the morning.

Waking up in the woods with no alarm or disturbance, only because I don't need anymore sleep.

Reading late when everything is still and quiet.

A wild animal in the back yard (deer, fox, raccoon, skunk, etc).

Enjoying the mountain view on a clear morning after a snowfall along the divide.

Hissing sound of a vacuum sealed package being opened.

Opening a can with a old school can opener (not much of choice here, only have old stuff).

The moment I realise that there is  new episode of a series I like.

I just love all of these mate, except the Coyotes howling, that's something we don't know over here, but I'll replace that one by the crowing of a rooster on a summer morning, just as you start to see the first signs of the new day on the horizon ...  :dd:

I also like the smell of a BO Leatherman as it comes out of its box for the first time, or the smell of a freshly cut pine tree, or the smell of burned wood coming out of the chimney on a cold winter evening ...

I also like reading about these small or pointless things somebody on the other side of the world enjoys, and notice that we are all much alike  ;).

This just reminded me. I love sharing a apple with my dog. Basically every day I will grab a apple. Sit down. She comes running over and lays down. I grab a knife and we share a apple. Its her favorite treat and they are great for dogs. Shes getting old so I cherish ever apple we share.  :tu:

Rain on hot sidewalk.

Baby's bare feet walking on tile floor.

Tomato sauce that's been cooking all day.

Good topic :tu:, here are a few things that spring to mind for me:

The smell of fresh cut grass
The sound of wind chimes
The smell of leather
Not finding other anglers in your favorite fishing hole
Being in the middle of nowhere
The first boat launch of the season
The smell of spring time and the feel of autumn in the air

What an awesome thread!!

I have quite a few of these myself.

The feeling of kissing my children on their forehead or temple(like fresh cookies man)

the scent of my wife's vanilla lotion she has worn since before I met her

Getting both boots laced to exactly the same tightness

this is odd, but I enjoy it when my handwriting comes out neat.  It's usually a mess.  More specifically, I enjoy a smooth writing pen.

Smelling loved ones hair
Coffee
Settling down to read a new book
Saturday or Sunday lie in
Fried eggs at the weekend
Filling the flat with incense
Walking through woods under dappled sunlight
Sitting by a stream
Reaching the top of a hill with a great view
Good boots
Quiet

Having written these down they seem neither small or pointless - Great new year thread though!

Interesting topic,, lets see
One thing I used to love was after mowing the lawn on a hot day, taking a nice shower then sitting on the front porch with a cigar and winecooler smelling the fresh cut grass, and watching the sun set off in the distance.
Other things,
That smell of the first couple min of rain on a hot day on asphalt,
Waking up bundled with the wife after a good nights sleep,
Being bundled with the wife on a cold day,
Listening to the rain come down on a tin roof,
The smell of a fresh load of laundry,
The smell of fresh leather!
Fresh warm sheets along with a shower,
And that sharp fresh smell when it's cold out
I'm sure there are a few other things but I can't think of them at this moment..

Oh, one little quick story that goes with a couple of my enjoyments :D

One year me, my wife(girlfriend at the time) my cousin, and his wife(also girlfriend at the time) kinda went camping, we dicided to pitch tent while out on a visit, anyway we drove up into a field and set up two tents, one for us and one for them, it was a little chilly but we said goodnight and went into our own little tents, morning came and it's was only about ahh 30ish? And they were FREEZING! We looked at them and asked why, we sweat our butts off? We all had the same equip, a tent and double sleeping bag. They said that they bundled in the bag and even with clothes on, I said that's why, we slept butt naked, warm skin to skin, stuck all our clothes in the bottom of the sleeping bag to keep them warm, so when time came dress up before getting out! They looked at us like we were nuts! I said hey, we're not the ones shivering! lol, another funny thing about that trip was, on the drive home we stopped at a MickyDs went through drive threw, an I had one of those fake arms hanging out the hatchback, a foreign tour bus parked at the back of the parking lot and they had to walk by the car to go in, needless to say some walked behind the car, and SCREEMED, then laughed, and of course took pics! LOL!!

A good book in a cafe with good coffe and just the right amount of people; many enough that everybody minds their own business, few enough that it isn't crowded. When I get to start a day that way, it gets so much easier to handle all the bullsmurf life throws at you.

Our cats a cryer, if we leave he'll sit at the door then cry after we lock the door, then when back, he'll run to the door then start making noise knowing we're behind the door. Other times I'll kick the kids off to school then try to go back to bed, he'll walk around and start crying out as if he doesn't have any food or water, it's got to be perfectly topped off, God forbid if it's down a 1/2" that or like hey, you can't sleep cause I'm awake!

Small/pointless things I enjoy... hmmm...

Well not so pointless: Turning of the leaves in the fall, I just LOVE the colors of the fall (finnish has a word for it: "ruska")
Fog, mist, whatever you call it, thicker the better (I especially love the rolling mist over water)
Empty roads when riding a bike
Dark and windy fall nights (I used to go and stand by the lake on nights like that when I was a teen, just to let the wind clear my head)
Stars and the moon, I love them, they are my friends (especially the Orion which I say hello everytime I see it :))

I love the feeling of walking barefoot across my cool tile floor on a hot day after enjoying a swim in the pool.  Reminds me of summers at my grandmothers house as a kid.

I'll add to this wonderful topic. Good clothes in bad weather. I.e. being able to tell a storm to "come at me, give me your best, I'll still be warm, dry and cosy."

Oh yea!!

And one of my favorites, NEW SOCKS!  If I had the money I'd never wear a pair more than twice.  I love the feeling of new socks.

After a long hot Texas day at work. You get home and that first long pull from a ice cold bottle of beer.

Laughing so hard your cheeks hurt and your eyes are full of tears.

Holding and dinking a hot cup of chocolate while sitting out in a cold day, wrapped up in a warm blanket with the cold wind in your face.

Floating in the ocean on a hot day, rocked by small waves.

Sitting in a rocking chair, eyes closed, outside in an autumn day, enjoying the sounds and smells of the woods.

I'm with you on cheeks and tears, just not the after effect, they get soar.. And the chocolate all bundled with the cold crisp air, I used to have a swing!

Another little trick the wife and I used to do was, our house temp we used to keep a little low like 67? So before going to bed we'd be watching tv on the couch in front of the bed and we would turn the electric blanket on at the beginning of the last tv show we were watching, then half way through during commercial run to the bathroom and get ready, then run to the bed, turn off the blanket, and jump in, all NICE AND TOASTY!! Not one square inch of cold sheets! It was like waking up in the morning knowing you had to get up and you had those perfect sheets! But you were going to bed!

Babies smiling in their sleep.  I'd love to know what they are dreaming of  :dd:

Picking the right line at the market.  You know the one that moves faster than all the others  :D

Kids climbing into bed with you in the morning for a snuggle.

Watching the sun melt into the ocean. West coast sunsets.

That I NEVER could do  :ahhh Whenever I pick the "shortest" line, omg, there's always someone who can't find change, someone who took the wrong product, someone who wasn't sure if they wanna buy it, someone who turned out not to have the needed amount of money and had to return a product or two, someone who brought COUPONS ( :ahhh), someone who had marked the wrong product orrrrrrrrr just SOMEONE who.  :ahhh lol

Happens to me as well.  It's why I love when I randomly pick the right line  :D.  I used to be that coupon user .  When all was said and done I'd pay less that 1/2  :tu:

I don't use them much anymore I got lazy.

Entering an elevator/room/vehicle with the lovely smell of a woman still lingering.

The still in the house after a busy day.

Whipping together a meal of random things in the pantry and it tasting divine.

When the radio play song after song that I love.

Let me add another one.

Walking at night in winter, under a bright moon with fresh snow on the ground. No need for a flashlight.

This is a great thread!

Watching my sons imagination at work. Whether it be school work or having an epic battle with his ninja turtles.

Lighting your house with torches, lanterns and candles during a power outage.

Being told by my family that something I did or said reminded them of our grandfather. He was someone we all looked up to.

My son asking if he can look at my tools.

I could go on and on.

Realizing at the end of the day I didn't have to take my phone out of my pocket once.

Listening to laughter.
When your kids come to you for advice.  Not so pointless but pretty cool.
The sight of dolphins surfing while beach goers are enjoying the ocean.
Puppies snuggling their moms.

the look on my moms face when I describe something that she thinks I was too young to have remembered.  (examples,  climbing up the cabinets and drinking a whole bottle of wishishere sauce, or drinking my whole bottle of amoxicillin from the refrigerator)  I was in diapers for latter, and my mom gets even more confused when I describe the house that this happened in in a fair amount of detail, even though we moved from there when I was 3.

it blows her mind

Stabbing an olive with your fork, without having to chase it around or having it roll out of your plate.

The first time you deep a piece of bread into the yoke of a fried egg, before it runs down and spills everywhere.
