I will take back Challenge on November All 111mm Challenge .. Big Reward
Will watch from the sidelines :D
Sounds fun though
Question:
I get the 2 layer or less - on main SAK carry , so my question is.......
"Would having a MiniChamp on my keyring disqualify me?"
Will watch from the sidelines :D

+1!!!
That rule #6 makes this easy, just gotta make 8 different single layer knives out of a SwissChamp. :P

Yes it would disqualify you.
I don't think I can do it... Althought the last few months I've exclusively carried my 2 layer electrician. But half the amount of time I also had a multi on me or at least near by. This is gonna be fun, and challenging. :tu:
This month, pairing my traditional slip-joint and rebar, felt like the puzzles complete. I think I'll most likely carry on. "But don't quote me on that"
I do consider myself a minimalist of sorts. But if I had to have one, it'd be a leatherman :multi:
Scary
Looking forward to this one!
Oh no....not again...lol!
Nice! I'll be in this for sure! :tu:
I think I might join with the cadet :)
I think I'll give this a go.
I'm in - just handed my notice in with the SAKMC so am good to go for October.
I consistently EDC a Pioneer and a alox Rambler, two 2-layer SAKs, in my pants pockets. Does that make me eligible to partake in the challenge?
But then, this would mean I'd have to leave my Spirit + (Vic) Hadyman -with nylon scales- combo behind and I'm not sure I can do that anymore!
Yeah, can someone carry lots of two layer SAKs? If I carried a Compact and a Scientist I think I'd feel pretty prepared.

Sounds like a lot of hard work just to get an imaginary badge... probably easier to cheat

"Here! Thunderpants! Have a Victoria Cross!"
"Lovely! Thanks a lot."
"Don't wear it on parades! Remember - You're not a real soldier!"
"Roger that! Tally ho! Chocks away! Last one in Berlin's a rotten egg. Etc...."

Just to confirm, for the hard of thinking (firiki, I'm looking at you :pok:), minimalist means just that. One SAK only at one time. But you can change it day to day if you want.I think it's a clever challenge, that is definitely badge worthy. For those that complete the 30, kudos

firiki never claimed to be anything else... :D
My real problem, though, is my vivid imagination, I think. I imagined that carrying two SAKs that fit the bill would double my eligibilitivess and perhaps boost my chances of getting that badge, is all

Just for you, I'll get a special badge done. Carry 2 SAKs together for 15 days and post a pic a day. Something like this, maybe:Show content:megaslap:
:P
Won't work for me. If it was a 6 layer challenge and I could have at least 3 SAKs and a multitool on me at all times then fine. Just can't make two layers work. You see, I have been a max-imist since birth. 😜😜😜This made me laugh. Thank you

Some kind soul has sent me a Cybertool 41. Second hand, but in great condition. It's missing a bit, the pin and could do with a clean, but I'll tidy it up and get some decent photos.
Only a couple of days of non-minimal carry left. All of this is going to have to be left at home

Does this count? I see a lot of them on here but no one seems to carry one. It's a bit on the heavy side but it is fantastic in hand.
I can use it as an excuse to go buy a new SAK!
You'd be more than welcome to join - one at a time though. ;)
OK, so I am definitely in... I'll be swapping around with my Tinker and my Centurian!
I am ready! Bring it!

Nope, post in this thread.
You'll have to buy one while you're over there.
Ooo ooo. I've never been part of one of these challenges, but have wanted to. I'll probably limit things to a Classic SD, but could go Vic or Wenger waiters, Executive, or money clip.
So, the requirement is to post a pic every day to document use?

I have to liberate the Classic from my key chain? Ok, might switch to the Exec on a dangler with a AAA flashlight. The Classic would probably fly away to wherever small, pocket goodies go to live.

Nar I think he meant the extras. You can't be in the challenge with say a Pioneer and keep a Classic on your keyring etc etc.

I'll let hiraethus make the call given he is watching over the challenge. If it was my call I would say no.
Here are my choices; Classic SDs, Executive, 84mm Waiter, Wenger (Waiter? ). However, I expect the Kamp King and Bear Country knives are off limits. I have to say I have always really wanted the Wenger to work. It's only missing scissors. That would be darn close to an awesome edc knife for me.

I was thinking again I might try this, I could EDC two layer models for a month, as frustrating as the combo tool is (Compact),
I locked Pikachu in my Box O SAK's this afternoon, and it is being guarded by Cthennifer, R2 and Squidward for the 30 days of the challenge.
SI will accompany me to my CT41 Victory!

Got a cheese sak, two bantams and an old cross popular so far. I have a compact inbound and will hopefully be able to mod one or two other 2 layer bladeless tools as the month progresses.
Full steam ahead, and damn the torpedoes >:D
I'll be carrying my 4 layer Fireman 31 days in a row. And boy, am I going to have some fun here.
Ah, the most traditional of British lunches, courgettes and coffee. Not to derail this on day 1 H, but it's Cthourgettes and Cthoffee here in the Magentus U Boat.

'07 Soldier today - used the awl to help get a hole started for a screw. Much prefer the awls on the Alox models compared to the Celidor ones, much easier to deploy without breaking a nail and being in-line you get greater precision, though I guess it's easier to put more force behind the back-mounted ones.

Standard Issue - what Wenger call their version of the 1961 Soldier.I figured something along that line, but thank you for the affirmation!!!
I agree. They are classic. Kudos to you for using that. My Wenger is very similar and I may give it a try.T14 Day two. Carrying a Bantam today because Bantams Rock.
Yeah, I like Bantam's too, too often overlooked in favour of their 2-layer sibling
First two days were spent camping at my kids school; great fun for them.
I drank a few beers and tanned some meat and the only cutting tool I had was the minimalist GAK.

Can I still join the challenge?! :salute:
I have been carrying my blue 2015 Cadet and a black Classic on my keys for a little while now, but I have been looking for an excuse to see if I could get by with just one of them. For the rest of the month, I shall only carry this baby:
I'm probably going to step down from this guys just won't have the time when I'm in the uk.
Day 4, Swiss Army issue 1971. :)Sweet! :tu:
New page banana man dance. :nanadance: :nanadance:
BTW I assume the retractable pen in a Manager doesn't count as an extra layer, so a Manager would still be a valid carry? Would have been useful today as I went into a meeting without a pen and it wasn't appropriate to leave the meeting to get one, so I may carry my Manager tomorrow.
It's a rather beat-up one with translucent blue scales, but I have some 58mm solid red scales with pen slot on order (and a new slider button). I'm quite a traditionalist, I much prefer solid scales!
A Manager is fine. The 2 layer 58mm knives seem to offer the most utility for their size - especially if you consider the extra scale tools available. Maximal minimalism. :tu:

58mm's are great and all, but how would one get by with that small blade as your only blade?
I would, by then I couldn't bring my Cadet! I need at least two inches of sweet victorinox steel to get me through my day. :-)A Manager is fine. It's not so bad, if your day doesn't consist of a lot of cutting. I'm an office don't. Most days at the office, I only have a Classic on my keyring, or in my pocket. If I want something bigger just for the sake of carrying it, I'll do so, although I usually like small and light when wearing slacks.I would, by then I couldn't bring my Cadet! It's not so bad, if your day doesn't consist of a lot of cutting. I'm an office don't. Most days at the office, I only have a Classic on my keyring, or in my pocket. If I want something bigger just for the sake of carrying it, I'll do so, although I usually like small and light when wearing slacks.

Day 4: Mail call with the cheese sword. A 3½ ounce hammer for challenge-related purposes :D
I REALLY felt the lack of openers/drivers on the cheese sword today. I discovered a loose screw on my bike reflector mount during my afternoon commute.
A bantam/cadet/compact driver would have been preferable to the corkscrew I ended up trying to use instead

Day 4, Swiss Army issue 1971. :)Sweet! :tu:
I was able to budge the screw. But failed to tighten it enough. I had no other tools available to do the job, so my bike was not up to code until I got home and found a proper bit ratchet.
maximal minimalism :tu: :DBTW I assume the retractable pen in a Manager doesn't count as an extra layer, so a Manager would still be a valid carry? Would have been useful today as I went into a meeting without a pen and it wasn't appropriate to leave the meeting to get one, so I may carry my Manager tomorrow.
It's a rather beat-up one with translucent blue scales, but I have some 58mm solid red scales with pen slot on order (and a new slider button). I'm quite a traditionalist, I much prefer solid scales!
A Manager is fine. The 2 layer 58mm knives seem to offer the most utility for their size - especially if you consider the extra scale tools available. Maximal minimalism. :tu:
Happy 1st of October everyone and best of luck in the challenge! For those about to minimalize, I salute you :salute:Ah, illy. Good stuff.

Me too, though I prefer solid red scales (guess I like the "traditional" look) and the current scales and pen slider are in quite a rough state, so the knife will be getting a fresh set of scales and pen slider soon!Where do you get new scales with the pen slider in them? The only place I have seen new scales for sale before only had regular scales and plus model scales. Never have I seen a 58mm scale with pen slider for sale.
It has to fight for coin pocket time with my Burgundy Alox Rambler now, though, especially if I'm carrying a SAK with Plus scales and hook (i.e. with a pen and holder for it)...

DAY 5
I find the SAK corkscrew is more convenient than getting out the wine rabbit.
:like: Wish I had seen this before October 1st; it's the appropriate flip side of the Stack Challenge. I've got a number of single layer SAK, Wenger and Victorinox, all with two or three tools max (not counting T&T or keyring). This would have been fun as I just used the backside Phillips on an 84mm Vic Apprentice a couple days ago. Anyone with a Compact will have a lot of versatility available in its two layers. Looking forward to all the pix.
Good luck to the participants!!

OK . . . I'm in . . . attempting to do it all with the single layer models I have.
Day #1 :mail:
Today was my birthday . . . technically yesterday since it's now after midnight . . . and this nifty Alox Bantam arrived. It is, I think, my most minimalist knife now, not counting some large lock-back folders like the Vic Hunter Pro and Buck 110 Hunter. (Hadn't thought of it until just now, but the 130mm Hunter Pro is a single layer!) It's an amazing 6mm thin, and clearly the thinnest knife I've ever had. Quick and dirty pix, with smudges and reflections on the blade and combo tool. The black glove leather sheath is from A.G. Russell. The 84mm 1 and 2 layer Alox and Cellidor fit it perfectly. Great for pocket carry with things like key rings and other stuff that will ding up knife scales quickly (no clip or belt loop on the back) and it keeps pocket Crudmium out of the knife. Christened it with opening a beer that didn't have a twist-off cap (not that I look to see if they are anyway). I can readily see why this is one of the EDC favorites.

T14 day six: Another swisscard day today. Sketched a quick diagram of the thermal processes in a Combined Heat and Power plant for a uni project with the pen today. Also trimmed a couple of nails and removed gunk from under two nails with the pen blade. I might grind the nail file SD tip down to a nail cleaner tip at some point. The SD tip sucks at that.

I also have a Leatherman Crater C33TX on the way. I already have the Crater C33X. Nice and light knife and easy to open but missed the tools. The lack of one hand opening is what bugs me the most. I'm ok with basically just a blade and a few drivers/openers as tools, but deployment is so slow with a 45 year old sak. Thankfully I'm not usually in a hurry.

Day 04:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)
Today the 74mm Ambassador comes through. Unlike the 2-layer 65mm Delemont Evo 81 and Executive 81, and the 58mm Classic (SD) that have the pen blade and fingernail file side by side, requiring two independent springs, the larger 74mm Ambassador has a single spring with the pen blade and fingernail file opposing each other on one side and the scissors on the other. The Ambassador's file has the pointed tip for cleaning under fingernails.
The exterior garage door opener with numeric combination keypad was not working this morning. It takes a small 12v battery that shouldn't need replacement as it hasn't been in the opener that long. It was on the house when I bought it 20 years ago but there's no reason it shouldn't still work. With the opener exposed to the elements, even with a flip down cover, I've learned over the past two decades that at least 80% of the time, the copper battery contacts in the battery box have oxidized and need to be burnished as the oxidation does not conduct electricity very well.
First step is removing the small #1 Phillips screw that holds the cover on the battery box. The pointed fingernail file tip fits it perfectly, and the screw doesn't require high torque. For this task, the trick is not dropping the screw; finding it would be a challenge.
As I suspected, both contacts were oxidized, especially the right one. The file makes short work of the oxidation with very light pressure; just enough to abrade the surface lightly.
After burnishing the right side, I used the file to tweak the contact, spreading its fold slightly to increase contact pressure on the battery terminal. The shiny nickel or chrome battery terminals were completely clean. They didn't need any attention.
After reinstalling the battery and reassembling the battery box cover, it passed the "smoke test" with flying colors. The garage door opener is fully functional again and should be for at least a few months ;)
Who says the pointy fingernail file is useless? BAH! Washed my hands afterward, including cleaning my fingernails with the Ambassador's file tip.

. . .
A few basic rules:. . .
- 1 or 2 layers only.
- 58-130mm, they're all good.
- Any handle material - cellidor, nylon, alox, stag, whatever.
- Both modified and stock knives are allowed.
- No other multis or knives allowed. Dedicated tools are OK if you need them for a particular job (pliers, saw, etc.)
- You don't have to stick with one knife for the month, as long as all the ones you do use are within the rules

Hey guys, I don't think I am going to post a picture here every day for 30 days. Photographing my SAKs is something I only tend to do when the mood strikes. I did it every day for a few days for this challenge, but quickly got bored with the concept. I will however be completing the challenge in spirit, as I intend to carry a single two-layer SAK for the rest of the month, and probably beyond October as well. I tend to carry the same SAK every day, and right now that is my red Cadet. As my possible final photographic submission to this challenge, I present you with my SAK, watch and dog.

Anyway, if I post pics of yesterday's carry and today's later today (after I've retrieved my camera and phone cable), will I still be allowed to remain in the challenge?
No problems. Just catch up if you can.

10/30Part of Mother-in-Law duty is to fix minor issues around the house. Well, I forgot to bring big boy tools , but did use the Executive to help with replacing the weather stripping on the door to the garage.
I taught my daughter how to use the unique orange, er, Cutie orange peeler.

Litlle less early than yesterday (6am this time)I have that same model. Sadly, it just sits at home because I never seem to carry cash. I barely ever used it.
But let's wake up with the choice: Silver MoneyClip (I could not carry it for the DISC'D, as it is still produced)

One of the more common SAKs I've seen being used this month is the Compact. Indeed, it has a lot packed into two layers, almost as much functionality as a Climber, and it has a pen in its plus scales. IIRC, it's missing an awl which is found under the opener/flat-tip layer and a pen blade. However, like the Climber, it has that magnificent back tool found under the scissors layer, the much maligned, scorned, ridiculed, slandered and libeled parcel hook.
For those desiring to maximize the minimalist experience with their Compact, fully exploiting all its tools to their maximum potential, I draw your attention to this magnificent YouTube video, which devotes over 25 minutes to the many different and practical uses for the parcel hook . . .

I have actually used the hook to help me put back a bike chain that fell off it's cogs a few months back, which made it a less messy job than it might have been, and I guess with Plus scales it also serves as a pen holder, but on the whole I'd rather have an awl...

Day 09:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)
This one will be l-o-n-g with 16 photos, some of which are a bit fuzzy and out of focus as I was more intent with getting the job done. In addition, it was very early morning and I had not consumed any java yet as I've got a daily thyroid med that must be done on an empty stomach and cannot be followed by anything for at least a half hour. While waiting for that, I decided to put the new scales on the fourth Apprentice fabricated earlier this year. All four were Economy Waiters with nylon scales and the Phillips came from trashed Tinkers. I have another set of sterilized black scales for this one. The Victorinox logo isn't on them as they're made for customer logo imprinting. Sometimes Vic will put their logo on the other side, but with these 84mm scales it's omitted entirely.
The Vic Watch Opener is put back to work again, this time to remove the nylon scales I had put back on after the conversion while waiting for Cellidor scales. I've found it the ideal tool for getting under scales and lifting them off the rivet rings. The 84mm have four rivets, but only three are used to hold the scales on; the back layer rivet has no ring and isn't used for the scales as there's another middle one right next to it. After removing the T&T and split ring, and opening the Phillips (or corkscrew) I like to start on the front side at the tweezer opening as it's typically the easiest place to get the opener between the scales and the liner.
I don't pry there as it's too easy to break or crack the scales at the tweezer opening. Instead I will slip the case knife around to the other side of the rivet and start working gently to lift the scale off of it from there.
After getting it lifted I work over between the middle rivet and the third one at the other end, prying gently between them right next to the rivet rings. The middle one almost always releases next, followed quickly by the third one.
Then I move to the back side and carefully start at the toothpick opening, above it, and not between it and the cutout. The scales on this side are more fragile because of the Phillips/corkscrew cutout, and if it's Plus scales, there will be a pen slot above the toothpick slot. It's easier to crack and break the scales on this side. Here I've gotten the knife in all the way under the end and do not pry on anything from this side of the rivet.
I then move the knife around to the other side of the rivet and start prying it up and working toward the other end as before. Patience and not using too much force is key to not cracking the scales, and to minimizing the wear and tear on the blind holes that press fit over the rivets. Scales can generally be reused at least once if this is done carefully.
The scales are off now and I will digress a bit to get a couple macros of the back layer rivet I installed and peened by hand. If you've ever had the scales off of a 91mm or 84mm Vic, you'll see the heads on this one are much larger and more robust, but still just barely small enough in height and diameter to fit under the scales. For this I'm going to do some afocal photos through a 4x/7x loupe held over the cell phone camera lens. Pictured is the loupe in 4x. There's a second lens that screws onto it to create a two element 7x loupe which much less distortion than one gets from a single element with more than 5x magnification, which is why most are 5x. This is a very old loupe that was used for photographic work looking at film strips on a light table and on the glass focusing back of large format 4x5 or 8x10 field camera.
Should have shot this one over, but didn't as it's fuzzy from camera shake and didn't notice it until I was doing post processing with it on the computer. You can still see some of the hand peening tool marks on the rivet head which aren't evident to the naked eye.
I then put the second element onto the loupe and photographed the other head on the other side with it. The tooling marks from the peening hammer are even more evident, and this one is in better focus with much less shake.
Back to the task at hand and putting the new black sterile scales on. First step is ensuring they are aligned correctly over the rivet rings on both sides, before applying any force or pressure on them! There's a soft cotton T-shirt folded up into several layers under the knife to prevent marring the scales.
Once aligned, pressure can be applied. Sometimes they will press down onto all the rivet rings, but not often with brand new scales. I can get half or more, but there are usually one or two on which the scales are not fully seated by using hand pressure alone. Do NOT use a hammer, even with padding! That will crack them, guaranteed!!
As is typical there are a couple recalcitrant rivet rings at one end.
Time for the small bench vise with some homemade dense foam pads to keep from marring the scales. This will finish the job. I don't start with the vise as it's much to easy for one of the scales to get out of alignment with a rivet ring, and the forces the vise can generate without any tactile feedback will ruin the scales if that occurs. Once it's aligned with the jaws and pads, it's time to gradually crank down the vise to finish pressing the scales on. Note that the Phillips is open! If it had a corkscrew it would also be opened. These stand proud above the scales slightly when closed. The pressure should only be applied to the scales, not the Phillips (or corkscrew).
There needs to be a means of seeing if they're fully seated. A penlight is ideal for the task. What's more appropriate than a two AA cell Victorinox LED flashlight!
Placing the penlight under the scales will show if there's any gap between the scales and liners. A penlight head is ideal as it is small enough to easily prevent blinding glare by keeping light only on the bottom of the knife and none from coming around the vise. Not done yet as there's light still coming around one last uncooperative rivet ring. Time to crank on more pressure with the vise. i've also found it's good to let it sit for 30 seconds or so after adding a little more pressure as the pads do add a bit of compliance.
It finally passed the light leak test in the vise. Now for the final one when removed from the vise. Discovered when installing the first couple sets of scales that light will also pass between springs and liners when it's not in the vise. Examination should be done with care to determine if any light seen is between scales and liners, or springs and liners. Here some thin slivers of light are coming around the spring, but not between the liners and scales.

And the Vic case back opener has proven to be an ideal tool for removing SAK scales!

The problem with the combo tool is that the same motion used to open a bottle cap is the same motion used when opening a can. The combo tool will punch through a bottle cap, and make it harder to open.

Da 13/30Back home in Colorado from a trip to SoCal. 2565 miles total. The Executive was the only knife I used for the week of travel. Today was light use due to driving, but it did help with whisker grooming.
Driving home. The Executive is just hanging around, waiting.

My favourite feature on the Soldier is the awl, I'm not really a regular user of the "normal" awl found on the modern officers knives but this one is really good for poking. Oh, and it looks good too.
If you don't have one of these I suggest donating (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,68712.0.html) this month!

Hope you manage to ride out those storms okay! Love that electrician's sheepsfoot blade , going to have to get me a SAK with one at some point, pity Victorinox don't do an Electrician X yet, though (if they do, hope they continue to leave the keyring off. Never liked them on the Alox knives)
Nice slip BTW, do you find it stops the knife going horizontal in the bottom of your pocket? Where do you get it from?
The electricians great, for me. I would never really use a can opener, and if I did I have a couple hand crank kitchen utensils that do it in 2 seconds. So for me an extra blade is much more utilitarian. Especially the shorter sheepsfoot, with wire stripper. It's great for precision work or just needing a blade to be half the length of the main blade. And yes an electrician x would be amazing!! I would definitely be owning one!
And the slip is a northwoods/ksf leather slip for my Northwoods Michigan Jack, but I haven't carried it because of this challenge so I've been using the slip for the 2 layer. It works good, and really it depends on the pants I'm wearing whether it rides horizontal or vertical. If I have slim fitting jeans it rides vertical no problem, but if they are looser pants with bigger pockets it can still fall horizontal. I also wear some chino style pants and the slip helps the knife from not slipping out of my pocket unexpectedly.
Interesting. I'm going to carry my 111 sunday. Maybe I'll tinker around with that. I take it you mean safety pin to "pinch" off the pocket and create a channel so to speak?Storm should be fine. I'm about an hour and a half from the coast which is getting the worst of it. I find that with a strategically placed safety pin, you can limit the movement of your carry. I do this when I pocket carry my Spirit, or any 111's, it keeps them vertical. :tu:
Of course if you use a Vic safety pin from an SOS kit, it works just a little bit better. ;)
+1 Ox-Guzzle. I modded an SI to a Farmer with a Bail and it kicks butt.hope they continue to leave the keyring off. Never liked them on the Alox knives)Better having one that you can rip off, than none that you can't add >:D
On the Alox knives I'd rather have a bail like on the Wenger Standard Issue. I don't have any issue with the key ring on the 91mm models, though

Day 15Instead of pushing the handle down as you would with other SAK models, you pull the handle up to cut. The bent piece becomes the fulcrum. This is similar to other old can openers that require the point to be looked down through the top of the can.
Carried the Soldier again today. Could anyone explain how the cab opener is supposed to work? I can't seem to get it.

Day 16It's the tweezers, mostly. I sometimes carry two toothpicks to save weight.
I'm carrying the Alox SD that I received on Friday. It's my first alox SAK. It's so much lighter than a regular classic. The difference has got to be the tooth pick and tweezers. I never gave it much thought, but they must weigh like a ton. ::)
Awesome. You don't see that often enough ;) very unique my friend! Way to go making it custom, I'm impressed.Day 16:Wait. You have one of these?! That's too cool! :tu:

That's a DIY :)
It is my first Victorinox (yeap, I had the chance to start my "young boy life" with an Opinel n°6 and a Vic Compact), with home made scales from a micarta sheet that I received as a gift in 2014 (a "nearly no-tools (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,30307.msg1219606.html#msg1219606)" knife making contest I won + GAW)
That scale making was imho much tougher than the 84mm and 58mm Ti scales I made since then!
Awesome. You don't see that often enough ;) very unique my friend! Way to go making it custom, I'm impressed.

Thanks Mags, yours too! :like:They are Horse Chestnuts or as we call them here, Conkers. In Autumn we play a game where, (using the mighty awl), you make a hole through the conker and thread it on a length of string. Two foes face each other and take turns to smash their opponents conker. The victor's conker then 'levels up' to a higher number (say from a sixer to a sevener) depending on how many victories it has under its belt.
Those appear to be chestnuts, but they could also be polished road apples, I'm going to assume the former.

Day 13:Nice attempt John! Medical Bill says 'Be careful with sharp implements'.
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)
Breakfast time and wanted a mandarin orange with the bagel. Decided to try an experiment with the Wenger combo tool on the Evolution 63 to peel the mandarin.
The corkscrew, toothpick, tweezers and keyring don't seem to be very suitable, although a creative imagination might come up with something for the corkscrew. Too early in the morning for that; haven't had my first dose of java yet. Two possible strategies come to mind, the first using the pointed protrusion on the combo opener, similar to the orange peeler found on the Vic Ramber, albeit not all that sharp. Started the spiral with it in the photo above, and continued with it in the next photo.
Leaves a ragged cut, and controlling depth requires some care, but it's working, and allowing the the hook on the rear of the opener to slide along the skin helps steady it. The other strategy I thought of is choking up on the blade with my thumb and using it to set a cutting depth into the orange peel.
That method works pretty well, although some care must be taken when spiraling around the mandarin. It can slip out rather easily and if the tip of the knife blade nicks a finger on the other hand holding the mandarin, it could turn bring breakfast to a screeching halt for a few minutes to clean up the carnage.
A MiniChamp or Executive may be convenient to peeling an mandarin, but it's not essential. Both methods I tried worked just fine, although the combo opener left a ragged cut. Unless the spiraled peel is being used for fancy special food decoration, it doesn't matter.

We still see them occasionally on the roads around the Amish farms, but they're very good about using manure bags, so it's not a common sight. They're to be avoided when riding a bicycle. :)

This Jazz is '98 and plays like new. I've had to use the Classic to pull the pick guard off to repair the wiring. Works great. I used to keep a battery powered soldering iron with me just in case.

DAY 19
I cut a band-aid into two finger-sized ones. I find it works better to buy just the regular size of band-aid. I can trim them down to make smaller ones, or double them up to make a larger one. One size can just about do it all if you get creative. I keep two in my wallet and it gives me all sorts of options.

Medical Bill says' Sometimes you find yourself in a situation where you don't have the luxury of using a whole plaster. Maybe 2 or 3 of your buddies have sliced a finger opening a takeaway coffee, or by playing 'Catch the SAK' in the field. If you only have a couple of plasters then A. stop 'Catch the SAK' NOW, otherwise, you're gonna have to improvise. Assess the wounds first. Assess your supplies and the amount of time left before you can resupply and take it from there. Remember, if you have run out of plasters and have to resort to tearing up clothes, the rule is, whoever loses at 'Catch the SAK' has to give up their trews first. It's the Rules.DAY 19

I need to remember this one! I've never completely cut one in two, but have split the two adhesive ends down to the compress to improvise a knuckle bandage. I expect Medical Bill will have to weigh in on it (unless, of course, you paid him off beforehand).

Day 17:Awesome! I have a 100 year old clock that I can't get to run fast enough. I should have you and your Bantam visit. ..;)
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)
My grandfather clock's beat error has been substantially off, and it's like hearing fingernails scratching across a blackboard. In a mechanical clock or watch with an escapement, the beat error is the time difference between a Tick-->Tock and a Tock-->Tick. Would be too much to explain here how this is regulated in a watch or mantle type clock with a Swiss Lever (or similar) escapement. In a pendulum clock, it's regulated by making the movement's escapement vertical, so that the Tick-->Tock-->Tick-->Tock is evenly spaced. Instead, my clock has been very obviously running Tick->Tock---->Tick->Tock---->Tick->Tock.
This should be easy by adjusting the leveler jack screws on the bottom of the clock. The first step is stopping the clock and having its door unlocked so I can stop the pendulum and weights from banging into each other and the chimes while I adjust the leveling. Unfortunately I cannot find the key. It's not in the music cabinet or the wash stand on each side of the clock. Fortunately I'm carrying the Bantam today and it's combo opener isn't just for opening bottle and cans, it can manipulate the tumbler lever and bolt to open the larger of these simple, single lever furniture mortise locks.
:woohoo: The door opened easily and I should be able to lock it again just as easily. The key will eventually turn up somewhere in the several stashes of keys around the house. It's undoubtedly hidden in a safe place, so safely hidden that I've not been able to find it.
Next step is setting a level on top of the clock. It won't necessarily show the top of the clock level when the beat rate is even as the clock works being perfectly vertical regulates that, not the clock case. It can be used to show how much relative change has been made in adjusting the tilt of the clock. I put two short 2x4 blocks on top to raise a short level enough to be seen above the facade. But wait, there's something on top of the clock! What have we here? It's the key to the clock door!! Perhaps the most logical place to put the key, my brain is not functioning well today.
At least I know now the Mighty Alox Bantam combo opener can be used to open some simple locks. I quickly decide it was a "proof of concept" demonstration, and not an act of desperation. That's my story now, and I'm sticking to it. The level is now on top of the clock.
Now to adjust the leveling jack screws on the bottom. I know from watching the pendulum and observing the shorter time between beats occurs when the pendulum swings to the right, that the clock must be tilted to the right slightly. The jack screws on the right are all the way flush. A check on the jack screws on the left shows them already fully extended. The leveling jack screws aren't long enough to tilt the clock sufficiently. This will have to be done Old School using thin wedged shims, the kind that's used between floor joists and sub-flooring to stop floor squeaks (invariably caused by one or more flooring nails rubbing up and down in a joist nail hole).
I won't worry about their length for now as they're hidden around the side of the wash stand to the left of the clock (which is in a room corner). Adjusting how much the shims are pushed under the left edge of the clock regulates the beat error, and I work at it until it sounds as if it's been reduced to zero, or nearly so. If you look on the left side in the photo above, you can see the edge of the black left rear jack screw adjustment wheel standing out from the base of the clock. The door can be locked again, this time using the key, and I'll put it in the same safe location it was in before, on top of the clock.
Now to set up an app on my iPad to measure the beat rate and beat error. The beat rate is how fast or slow the clock is running. It should be exactly 3600 beats per hour (one every second; the typical rate for a grandfather size pendulum clock). Beat rate is regulated by location of the pendulum weight on the pendulum (the big round disc on this clock; it has much more mass than it appears to). Its height is adjusted using a thumb wheel on a very finely threaded vertical pendulum rod. Raise the weight and the beat rate increases; lower it and the beat rate decreases. While the app will tell me the beat rate, the issue was the beat error. The beat rate was nearly dead on. Correcting that may shift the beat rate slightly, but watching the clock for 3-5 days to see if it's fast or slow, and by how much, will work better. This app can also be used for watches and mainspring type clocks with Swiss Lever (or similar) escapements, so it has lift angle and amplitude are meaningless for a pendulum clock as the amplitude is set by clock design.
It needs to gather sufficient sample data, so I'll let it run for at least several hours. The Alox Bantam came through once again, with its Victorinox combo blade that can open some locks in addition to cans and bottles. Wouldn't advertise that much as law enforcement could then claim it's a "burglary tool" and promptly arrest anyone found in possession of one. :o

A very similar hack is using the edge of a car or truck door window. Roll the window half-way down and use the window edge just like a stone or a steel. It's an even finer "grit" than a ceramic mug bottom! Learned that one in the military back in the halcyon days of my misspent youth.

Oh, and the blade looks horrible after some previous owner took something easy to course to it.

Step 2: Remove plate and unscrew the wall screws.
Step 3: New toggle bolts. Since the holes were already in the wall, a drill wasn't needed. Just push them in, and screw them tight with the SD.
Step 4: Reinstall the outer plate, tighten everything up, voila!

You do know that for the challenge you are allowed to use proper tools when called for, don't you? Pliers, screw drivers, saws, or what ever you need, as long as they are dedicated tools and not part of another multitool. We can't be expected to do everything with a SAK, especially a minimalist model.Yes, and thanks for the reminder. I exercised this option to filet some catfish I caught last week using a real, dedicated filet knife. Thank Goodness, because fileting a 5 pound fish with the Executive i was carrying would have been kind of messy.

Waking up day 23, with a high contrast picture :-)
I hope I can go out today, so I can take you outside pics
Day 23You could get a pocket clip for that 111 like I did for my 111mm Centurian...
Here are the four minimalist SAKs that I have carried this month topped by the 111mm that I will carry next month. I don't feel very good about next months challenge because that is a huge knife and I'm worried that it may be uncomfortable to pocket carry. I am a big guy at 6'2" and 300+ pounds, so I don't care for belt pouches. When I try belt pouches they get hooked on chairs and door frames, get slammed by the car door and ripped open by the seat belt, etc.. The only safe position is in front, and then they poke me in the belly when I sit down. I've pocket carried a Power Lock and a Super Tool 300 but this Vic Outrider is even thicker than those bricks. :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
 The Outrider has the side lock. It was an interesting idea for a couple of seconds though.Sorry!!!

Kurt, How was the gig last night?Great, thanks. It was a casual thing for a local church's middle school event. It was neat to see them dancing and having fun. Some had their eyes glued to us like they've never seen a live band before. Quite different from my old L.A. club circuit days.

Many European wine producers still use corks, less common in the New World and Australia/New Zealand, though. I always take a knife with a corkscrew when visiting France!
Day 20:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)
The Vic Waiter has the honors today . . . opening this nice bottle of Japanese plum wine . . .

Some of these newer corks can be rather troublesome for some corkscrews. You'd think they were made of metal, but it's no problem for the Victorinox Waiter!
A little more work than normal, but perseverance eventually prevails, and the cork was successfully removed.

Thanks to the Victorinox Waiter, we can enjoy some of my favorite Japanese wine!

Day 24Can you upload as file attachment? It's how I just did a photo in another thread.
Back to the Vic Soldier to see how this feels after using my new Wenger SI the last few days. There's not a huge amount of difference, though the "snap" on the cap lifter/screwdriver is noticeably less on the Wenger, strange as it's about the same on all the other tools.
Hmmm... can't post a photo as Photobucket seems to be down!
Will try again later.

I'm a student so it's a office type environment without your own desk. But this kit follows on travels (minus things like the razor blade that might be problematic) as well as outdoors and shopping (the tape measure is mainly there to make sure second hand goods are acutely the right size and my main use so far for the kevlar cord had been to secure things to my bike).
The kit is slowly evolving to fit my needs. I used to have one of those disposable rain ponchos in there but they aren't really that useful so I didn't replace it after last use. Another thing I changed recently was that I replaced a smaller tin so I could fit the lenses and that also allowed me to fit the scissors. I'm looking for some mirror tape or other kind of unbreakable mirror to attach to the inside of the tin to help with putting in the lenses.

I'd thought about doing this conversion myself to create a Yeoman Plus from an Explorer Plus, and give the resulting Climber to a deserving friend, but it's on a back burner indefinitely as I'm well satisfied with the Explorer Plus for now. They're the two logical models to start with.

No, not yet, and the Sentinel Plus has tweezers too! Had thought about shaving with it, but that requires having to switch between looking at the side of the blade and using the edge to shave with. Concluded it would take too long, mostly to stem the flow of blood. If we keep touting all the personal grooming features of these SAKs, some might start to see them as being a bit "girly" (like the hook file). :o

Limited now to discontinued as well for that challenge, the Sentinel Plus has the honors again. This morning I wanted to hook up audio cables from an PC 2.1 external audio system with sub-woofer to the 32" master bedroom TV (much better than the TV's internal speakers). It's at chest level and cannot see behind it to find the TV's line level audio output phono jacks.

Not wanting to run off to go get the mirror I would normally use for this, I improvised with what was immediately at hand, the mirror polished finish on the large spearpoint blade on the Sentinel Plus, along with the Maglite Solitaire I carry on my keyring for some light. One channel connected. Just need to connect the other one and we're done.

I gave the Classic a rest because I'm dreaming of what my first Alox should be. I'm struggling between a Cadet and a Pioneer X. I don't have a 91mm that qualifies for the challenge, so I grabbed the Wenger. The compactness, color options and nail file of the Cadet really appeal to me. But, I'm afraid that due to my large mitts, a 93mm may be more appropriate, and the scissors are a major bonus. An Alox would be carried in addition to a Classic on the keys.

Day 24:John,
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)
A day in the life of Apprentice #2 . . .
I've still got two of the four I made. Time for #2 to go for its maiden voyage. First step is putting a basic edge onto its blade:
First a formed edge with moderate sharpness using the Victorinox sharpening pen
(http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l290/j_a_lind/Other/Knives/SAK/Minimalist%20Challenge/Day%2024%20Apprentice%2002.jpg)
Then the smooth portion of a ceramic coffee mug bottom
(http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l290/j_a_lind/Other/Knives/SAK/Minimalist%20Challenge/Day%2024%20Apprentice%2003.jpg)
Ready to go! This afternoon I'm making beer bread, a type of quick bread using beer instead of water. Can't just use it out of the box though, it needs to be customized. This one will be a "pizza" beer bread with shredded mozzarella cheese, pepperoni slices, diced jalapeños and mushroom pieces
(http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l290/j_a_lind/Other/Knives/SAK/Minimalist%20Challenge/Day%2024%20Apprentice%2004.jpg)
Aside from the bread mix, I also need 3 tablespoons of butter melted to drizzle over the top just before putting it into the oven. The bread pan is stoneware. With a very light coating of oil on the inside it releases the baked bread loaf without any sticking whatsoever. Not enough left of the 1/4 pound stick in the refrigerator, so I need to cut a piece off of a new stick from the freezer. I use unsalted butter for baking and salted butter for the dining table. The Apprentice is perfect for slicing through the frozen butter. It goes into the microwave to be slowly melted
(http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l290/j_a_lind/Other/Knives/SAK/Minimalist%20Challenge/Day%2024%20Apprentice%2005.jpg)
This isn't the first time I've made beer bread with these kinds of additives. It's much easier to mix if the extra ingredients are laid out in small bowls beforehand already measured. From everything that was pictured I'm going to use half of each which means I can make another loaf of this bread within the next month or so. Need to open these cans of jalapeños and mushroom pieces and drain the water and juice off of them to minimize the moisture being added to the bread mix.
The jalapenos will have to be strained (been there, done that) but the juice in the mushroom pieces is thin enough it can be drained while still in the can. The Apprentice's combo opener is used to start opening the can, but after a half inch or so I go around 180 degrees and punch a hole. This provides an air hole that allows the can to be drained over the sink.

As with opening the cans, the combo opener makes quick work of the bottle cap and the beer is added to the bread mix.
The jalapenos have already been added to the dough, and the rest of the ingredients are staged to be put in one at a time.

All the ingredients have been added and a final, brief mixing is done to ensure they're dispersed throughout the dough. I use a 2-quart Pyrex measuring bowl with spout as it's easier to scoop out into the bread pan compared to a stainless steel or polyvinyl mixing bowl (e.g. Tupperware).
I keep a small part of the grated cheese out to sprinkle over the top, and then add the melted butter, which helps to create a nice crust.
Into the pre-heated oven it goes for an hour, and the Apprentice is used with the combo at 90 degrees to pull the hot rack out so the bread pan can be placed on it. It's used again fully open to push the rack back in.

The bread is out of the oven and it needs to cool for at least an hour before taking it out of the bread pan. The shredded cheese that was sprinkled across the top has browned perfectly.
While pulling it out of the oven, one of the door screws looked like it might be loose, so the Apprentice's Phillips tightens it up a tad.
After about two hours, the bread is pulled out of the pan and I start slicing it using a wood bread board with spacers to guide the bread knife for uniform slices. This is what the middle looks like. The pepperoni and jalapeños are readily visible.

John,
I've been making traditional beer bread for decades and have never "customized" it before! Beer bread is AMAZING. I'll have to give your recipe a try. Of course, I'll be using my Waiter since I don't have your model.

Something is wrong. I bought this knife on ebay for about $3. The blade is fine, the combo tool doesn't have the sharp point I see on other knives, and cork screw doesn't retract. It might be the spring, it might be a worn corner on the cork screw. It's not great for pocket carry since it sticks out and pokes me.Day 29/30

Day 24:

Thanks all. I skimmed over the info, and website. The yang stamp seems to range between 1980 and 2005. The odd combo tool looks original, unmodified. It might be really 80s. I have to day that the economy scales are strong, with a good tactile feel. I like this one bit because the cork screw sticks out, I generally keep the knife in my lunch cooler ' s pocket as a backup. I might just send it in, but half expect them to replace the screw with a new, unlined screw.Look at the blade tang again, and and you'll noticed it can't be 1980-2005

Possibly cheaper for you for shipping than for me then, I got mine from online shops in mainland Europe (I'm in the UK), though next time I place an order for a SAK or accessories from somewhere that has the lanyards, I could get some for you and then send them onto Belgium for you? I'll try to remember to PM you before my next order.

The Ambassador is a fine one. IMHO its size makes it preferable to the Classic if there's space for a 74mm on the key ring. I wish Vic would make a 74mm version of a Rambler!

31. Just the basics, plus scissors. The challenge helped me appreciate the Soldier/Standard Issue/Pioneer pattern, and also the Spartan variations, but the lack of scissor layer firepower for the amount of space/weight saved is severely limiting. I did have a couple of Compact days, and while the scissors are excellent, it did give me a renewed disdain for the cheesy combo tool. I found myself swearing at it and fearing a bloodletting while trying to get at my tinned vittles. While I did not injure myself on the combo tool's carnage, or opening plastic bags with the main blade while holding them awkwardly, give me a good old Climber or Pioneer X any day, my kind of minimalism. :)Do you need Medical Bill's assistance Twiglet? He can be over to you in a couple of weeks (as long as you can elevate any wounds for that long).
Just spent my lunch break catching up with the photos from the last week and getting the list up to date:

I was able to create the award for the challenge myself so I'll give it to those of you who have finished so far. Great effort eveyone. :D

Hopefully you had a bite to eat while you were doing it?
Medical Bill is a staunch NHS supporter - all services free at the point of delivery, so he should really be called (No) Medical Bill. I insist my U Boat crew are soSmurfpillsts at the very least - no room for political arguments while dodging firiki's depth charges!31. Just the basics, plus scissors. Not yet Mags, I did escape the challenge uninjured, physically anyway. Good to know Bill is on standby, but I hesitate to imagine the actual cost of services. :ahhh
You have left over pizza in your house? How does that work?Hopefully you had a bite to eat while you were doing it?
Half a cold home-made pizza, leftovers from dinner last night. :P :D

We're not worthy...John, you must be ready for another layer at this point.
More seriously . . .
The reason I've been doing it single layer is the horde of 2-layer Vic and Wenger SAKs I have. Not counting the 58mm or 65mm, or the 108mm GAK (not a Vic), there are 16 different models 74mm to 111mm. That would have been in addition to the 13 single layer. That many to choose from didn't seem very challenging, so I decided to limit it to the baker's dozen single layer. I've used a dozen of them so far, and for me it's been more fun than it would have been using the two layer also. I'd have probably ignored most of the single layer and it forced me to use them much more than I have before.

Amici,
After a long absence, I have returned as well as discovered this thread, and have been participating albeit off to a late start.. So far, I'm on day # 5, and here is what I carry for EDC with the possible addition of a Buck 110 every now and then on the weekends, especially at this time of year.
I guess you can say that I've fallen in "l-u-v" with my Victorinox Champion once again, especially since I attached a P-7 suspension clip which makes pocket carry a no brainer...
Cheers,
Serge

You even get some smart arses saying "And Robert's your father's brother"...

I own an OC 84mm alox Popular, and it really makes an alox bantam seem bulky in comparison.

I kind of miss carrying the SI after all this time. Very solid. Although not enough to carry it instead of my beloved Pikacthulhu:
