Title: Buck Fever
Post by: J-sews on November 05, 2006, 04:56:32 AM
Boots, coat, socks, extra socks, knife, lantern, food, beer, extra beer, sleeping bag, flashlight, long johns, playing cards, a couple of multi tools, lucky hat,...........compass........and, oh yah, my gun.

I'm headin' to deer camp next weekend. Anybody else going?

I wish I was going.  I don't hunt much any more since I busted up my foot and have trouble walking in the bush.  I usually just shoot paper targets nowadays.  Not much sport and they taste like crap but at least they are lowfat...

What multis are you taking?

I've got my lucky SuperTool and my lucky Micra, all packed up and ready to go.

(FYI: given my lack of real hunting prowess, I place a great deal of emphasis on "luck")   :)

What o you need prowess for?  All I ever needed when hunting was a case of beer, a few friends (gotta laugh at someone!) and a grocery store on the way home so you can insist that you shot a Saskatchewan Beef Deer, and that you hit him so hard he blew into bits and the only thing left was the rump roast, which you conveniently wrapped up in a foam tray and plastic wrap you found discarded in the woods...

Def, I think you and me should have our own hunting show....Not much hunting, but lots of beer drinking and playing with knives. (SAKs and otherwize) Ya'all wanted a "reality" show right?  :D

Count me in...

Plus, like you I prefer bowhunting because it's a little harder to accidentally blow one's ear off listening to see if you can hear the ocean!

I soooo want to be a part of the hunting show... I can get a deer, and use my Tough "to open" Tool to field dress it.  Of course, we'd have to show the deer rotting away as I fight to get the knife blade out of the handle in order to use it...

I think the most progressive thing that would happen on our show is Phil snagging a boogie with a multitool!

Why do apes have such big nostrils?

Because apes have big fingers!

Okay, back on topic:

Here's a picture I took today from the truck, while hauling a load of firewood back to our hunting cabin.

There's so many deer here that folks poach them in their own yards.  DNR doesn't do much about it because they are overrunning the city.  In fact, I used to see them in town every evening when I picked up my sister from work, and yesterday while walking my dog I cam across some fresh, discarded legs dumped at a roadside rest stop.

Hunters bag a bunch of them, but apparently we have a great environment for them.  The cities aren't all that big, there is a fair amount of garbage and woods for them, the weather is relatively mild here, not many predators...

It's pretty hard to go out and not bag something.

.......It's pretty hard to go out and not bag something........

WHOA, hang on there! I can tell that you've got a LOT to learn about hunting buddy!! Rule number one: NEVER say things like that! Instead, go into great detail about how difficult it is to be successful. How the odds are nearly impossible. And how only the truly great woodsmen are able to regularly bag their buck.

Then, when you later tell everyone about the big deer you got, you'll be respected as a mighty hunter indeed!

Take my area, for instance. There are only about 5 deer for every twenty square miles. Only one guy in ten.....or maybe one guy in twenty, is able to get a deer in a given year. Why, some guys go their WHOLE LIFE without ever bagging a buck. I'm just hoping that (sigh) I can persevere and be one of the lucky ones........... ;)

Around here if you shoot at a deer and miss you will probably get one of the ones standing behind it!  If you randomly fire off six shots into the bush with your eyes closed you will probably go home with 8 deer!

Personally I think that nothing ruins a good hunting trip like having to kill an animal, drag it's carcass out of the woods, hang it, clean and quarter it etc...

As I said before, easier to have a few drinks, wake up a few hours later and grab a roast on the way home!

I do those kind of hunts the other 11-1/2 months of the year.  :D

Yeah...I try to be "heap big hunter dude" but I keep getting distacted..."Oh look, a pretty tree to take pics of." Click! (10 deer bust from there beds and thunder off in the next county while our hero stands there with his mouth agape) "Aw $^&^&$#&*( #^&**^$ing #$$&*( dumb @$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Tune in next time, when Pete gets bored and flipps a bali song in a tree stand....

Despite all the incompetence I could muster, this 8-point still somehow managed to jump out in front of my bullet.  :)

(Actually, I'm happy as can be. In twenty years of deer hunting, I've never even seen one this big in the woods before.)

Venison chops at my house, you're all invited!
