New set:

As a lad, I remember my father always having a similar-looking bottle opener on his key ring. He used to let me play with it from time to time. Then, when I was older and just starting to train as a machinist, I made my own out of stainless steel. I still have it today :)

You know what stands out to me most in that picture? It's the "non-standard" rate of twist on the corkscrews :P Seems like all corkscrews in the western world use the same diameter wire, are the same length, and have the same rate of twist. Go ahead and try a Vic mini-screwdriver in any misc corkscrews you might have about the house if you don't believe me.

By the way, nice picture Kart!

I guess this is the right thread for this.  I found this set last weekend at a military vehicle show/swap meet for $5.  I figured that it was perfect for keeping in my bag for work.  We're always scrambling for knives and forks at lunch.

The holder/bottle/can opener is marked "NSB-80 BUND" , and the utensils are marked "OFW 81 BUND" .  Anyone have an idea who this set was made for?  I'm thinking it's German, but not 100% sure.

My guess would be the Bundesweh-Besteck as well. Produced by several different companies, AFAIK. Example: http://www.edelrid.de/en/sports/products/cooking-technologies/bundeswehr-besteck.html (http://www.edelrid.de/en/sports/products/cooking-technologies/bundeswehr-besteck.html)

Kart;

Do you know what your items are worth? I've seen several of these before (my wife is affiliated with an auction house) and was wondering if you'd be okay with me showing this thread to some people there. I have no interest in buying, but it might help with collection / insurance purposes. If you'd like, I can keep this information between you and I. As I know a lot of the people there, there would be no fee (they'll be looking at your photos, not handling the items).

Sorry for my english.
My photos published in this forum for you to peruse. I see no problem to read them by someone else. If you need my help with the evaluation of such things, I'm not a great expert in this, although I can share information, at what price acquired this or that subject.

Over here we have always been fed the propaganda that life in the USSR was stark, bleak and utilitarian.  I know that's an extremely jaded view left over from the Cold War, but since I've never been to Russia to change that idea it sort of sticks in my head.

Seeing the works of art that you are finding shows that much of what we've been told about life in Russia just can't be true.  Not that I believed it (I always knew there had to be more) but your photos and collection always offer solid proof!

I wonder if we can put a non-facebook like on posts and threads  I belong to another board that does this. It's not at all related to Facebook. You can just click like on the post or thread and a small dialog box shows that you clicked the like button.

This is a temporary plug for closing the open beer bottles, the beer did not run out of steam. They are removed from the rail. For more photos on the link in the message.

Quoting an old post yes :) I have one of those in my EDC and it does its job very well...

Also have one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lusikkahaarukka
The one i have was actually used by my grandfather during WW2, pics will follow as soon as I find it :D

This is a usual Set as issued to the Bundeswehr for a long time. These should be easily obtainable here, so if someone NEEDS one, I can have a look. I carried one of those really heavy sets the first decade of being a Boyscout (They were on the packing list) until it dawned on me that my No 7 Opinel and a fork and spoon will do juyt fine. The can opener on those sets are quite useless, IMHO

Yes, they look very pocketable. You could put it in your pack and only remember it when you need it.

Nice collection! Have seen several of yours here in Estonia also. Post some pics i did missed here. The bottle opener in second pic i found from a campsite during metal detecting. Was pretty rusty. Got some care and nowadays looks like new  :). Have a can opener too from metal detecting but pics has to wait  >:(.

There is a thread here for every oddball thing I pick-up!

This is what I slay my bottles with, Kirin bar opener from the 60's.

You could defend yourself with it, it is ~1/4" thick (91mm SAK for reference).

My small contribution to this thread, courtesy of an antique store: Two Ekco church keys and one Mallard, France branded bottle opener and milk bottle opener. I do not know the use of the couple protrusions from either end, however.
