Good timing starting this thread now! :like:
I spliced on some Nanofil line to my Pflueger President spinning reel this afternoon. One-too-many birds' nests made some new line advisable. And I thought I'd try out this new Nanofil stuff.
I used a double nail knot to splice it on, but the knot is well buried on the reel. Re-attached a snap swivel, as well. I'm hoping to get some river time this week!

I was curious to see that several of the Vic SAK's named for fishing don't have scissors! :o What were they thinking?

I prefer the pliers to the fish scaler. The pliers can be used to remove hooks (like forceps), as well as crimp barbs when fishing barbless. Pliers might be useful for crimping split shot as well....haven't tried that.
I might prefer the corkscrew to the Philips, but that doesn't seem quite as important a point. Might be nice to have that little eyeglass screwdriver for tightening up the old polarized sunglass, though.

Down here where we need a scaler. Bass and pan fish abound down here, so it would be handy! Most of the trout here are at grocery stores :whistle:

For me, I want a blade and scissors, the Vic pliers are new to me and will see use, the hook remover will also see use for the aggressive feeders that get hooked deep, the scaler will probably never see it's intended use

I have a fun story involving a Recruit
It was the mid 90's and recreational shark fishing was becoming popular around here, with a number of sponsored derbies taking place.
One in particular was being heavily promoted by a local radio station, and they were going to be set up for the weigh in on the Halifax waterfront, so I decided to take it in with my young family.
Here's where it becomes a SAK fishing story.
The radio host announces a giveaway, the first person to come to the booth with a fishing related item wins a prize, there was a large crowd but no takers and the Dj kept asking, my oldest daughter who was around 9 at the time said "Dad we use your pocket knife when we fish can I take it up" so off she goes with my Recruit, the Dj made a big deal about the "young lady with the Swiss Army knife" and she won a set of lawn darts, the good ones with the sharpened steel tips, but I digress.
Back to the story, after a few songs the Host puts out another call for a prize and again no one comes forward, this time daughter# 2 asks for the Recruit, off she goes and the Dj takes note of the knife and gave her a T-shirt.
I thought it would end there, but no, another call for a prize and this time I handed the Recruit to a youngster standing nearby and off he goes, returns my knife and thanked me, this kept going with a new kid approaching me every time a giveaway was announced, with the Dj making comments about the Swiss Army knife.
After about a dozen giveaways all attributed to the Recruit, the Dj announced that the " little red knife would no longer count" and he would like to meet the real owner. So I went up and we both had a chuckle and we were both surprised that the knife always found its way back to me in the crowd.

I was using a new line (Nanofill) and it caused me all sorts of headaches. I'll be replacing this line immediately.
What I won't be changing out too quickly is the Swiss Champ. The Champ did outstanding work changing out lures and cutting tangled line; the pliers came in handy to loosen a tricky swivel-snap. Great job all-around. The Champ rode comfortably in my pocket. The clip and lanyard allowed my to retrieve the Champ easily, even though I was wearing gloves.

No, the Nanofill line is really thin....which should be nice. It's strong for size....in theory. But I found that it did not take much to shear it.
It cast well, but a few times it developed a "bird's nest" with what seemed to be a fine cast. I think it just ran off the spool too quickly. And it had some memory issues, holding a coiled shaped after being cast. I think that contributed to the tangling issue.
At one point--no idea how this happened--the line got stuck under the line-keeper on the side of the reel. When I made a cast, the keeper just cut the line! Lure and line went sailing off into the distance........ :facepalm:
I've never had that happen with regular monofilament.
It may be the case that this line isn't well suited for this reel. I don't know. But I do know I'm getting rid of it tomorrow. Probably go with a braided line.
Days like today make one appreciate fly fishing and its simplicity. :cheers:

Same, here. I like to try new things, but have to chalk this one up as a fail. I'm genuinely surprised. Maybe it was just me--I have more experience with fly fishing. 'Though....I'm not a very good caster. Not for distance anyway.
This bit of water was pretty deep and fast. Hard to tell from the photo, but the river (Missouri) here is probably.....mmmmm....60-70 yards across. The trout at this time of year tend to be out in the deeper stuff. So one needs to get our 20-30 yards. I can't come close to that with a standard fly rod. So.....spinning outfit.
Ray asked about top water feeding, but here the trout are deep. (Some Walleye and Ling cod (I've heard) up closer to the dam.) There were a few midges hatching near the banks, but the trout were staying well down.
I've fished this spot with a fly rod from a boat in summer, but even then I always do better with big heavy flies that sink well. The bottom, especially up near the dam, is very rocky, providing good holding spots for some big fish. Real predators. So streamers often work well. :tu:

We were down stream from the dam and the water looked pretty good. And I have caught fish there before........

It's not as full as it looks. The line is spooled up to within....3/16" of the rim. Actually, I think that gold-colored rim is an indicator for a "max" fill point. At least that's the way I use it..... :rofl:

Good eye and sound advice! And I need all the help I can get..... :rofl:
Your point was an excellent one, though. When putting line on a spool, "less is more". Within reason.
Too much line and one will end up with more tangles. Too little and that lip on the spool will put some drag on the line, slowing the cast and shortening the possible distance. That's my understanding, anyway.
My experience is the same as yours: an over-full spool has caused me tangling issues in the past. I think this one is set up pretty well, but if I start having tangling issues, I'll strip some line off, to be sure. :tu:
I'm eager to get out and test it. First, however, I'll hook my line tip to the truck and then walk down the street, pulling out 50 yards of line to give it a stretch--hopefully getting some of the coil memory out of the line. Then I'll reel myself in with a bit of tension. This should seat the line better and, hopefully, decrease possible tangling a bit more. :dunno:

My experience ice fishing is yes, Berkeley makes a mono specifically for this, and I find it stays more supple, that or I'm a marketing sucker :dunno:

I hadn't considered that, Ray. Perhaps the Nanofil might work better at temps over freezing?
But.....in warm weather....it's pure fly fishing for me. ;) (Actually, I think I'm going to break out a fly rod and try a different section of the river here soon; it just hasn't been that cold this Winter!)
Wet wading in a mountain stream is a great way to cool off! :D

It was a cold day. The truck thermometer read 8ºF (-13ºC) when we pulled off the road to park. It did warm up a bit, but clearly stayed well below freezing.

The rod and guides iced up all day long. This caused a lot of headaches....and cold fingers. I had to de-ice the guides every couple of casts. I was tempted to use my Swiss Champ's awl at one point, but didn't want to damage the inner surface of the guides. So I just used my fingers and a little hot breath.
The new (and stretched) 6# monofilament did very well overall. I don't think I was able to cast quite as far as I could with the Nanofill, but the mono seemed to be better behaved and tougher when lures got stuck on rocks (the Nanofill was 8# test, but seemed weaker in terms of shear strength and, maybe, knot strength.). I only lost one lure, and that was clearly lodged down deep in some rocks.
I did have a couple of bad tangles, but I think this was due to iced-up guides. I could hear the line grinding against ice in the guides. I think that in mid-cast the line would snag on some ice at the tip, suddenly slow, and then tangle down at the reel. Otherwise, the monofilament was working really well.

-- Scissors: these got used to trim knots and cut out tangles. They saw the most action.
-- Pliers: these got used to de-barb hooks, remove hooks from fish, and, a couple of times, remove a hook from my gloves.
-- Toothpick: this got used to help pick apart a tangle in the line.
-- Main blade: used to open a snack bar for lunch.
The morning started off slowly, but I found the right combination of lure and retrieval speed in the afternoon. I lost count of the rainbows after the eighth was landed. These were modest trout by Missouri standards, measuring 10-14". Nice fish, though.
My fishing buddy hooked "the biggest trout I've ever seen" on a worm. He said it threw the hook as he tried to play it. Trout on the Missouri get pretty big, so I would have like to have seen that one.

That's a sweet reel, I've been 100% converted. Won't buy anything other than Shimano reels now.

I'm slowly transitioning my spin casting lures from treble hooks to single hooks. Just seems kinder to the fish that aren't going to be kept.

As long as I'm replacing hooks, it seems like an opportunity to hide the hook and add a bit of extra movement to an otherwise clunky lure. I used the Swiss Champ's scissors to add a bit of fur to a couple of single hooks to try this concept out.

The separate single hooks might get fished as they are, or used as replacement hooks for some other treble hooks. Haven't decided quite yet.....

Well you will find out how well it works out pretty soon. I never thought of that, but I like the ideal...and the hook is at the back for the short strikes. I will be really interested in knowing how well it works for you. One of the reasons I asked about the tube flys is because the hook is at the back. The only concern I have is the lure weight being used by the fish to throw the hook...can’t wait to hear how your field test goes! :like: :tu: :hatsoff:

A couple of summers ago I went on an old school craze, and almost exclusively used spoons and spinners, I dressed some of the hooks, and they performed well :tu:

It is! But compared to some other outdoor things, not that expensive. Shooting for example, ammo cost :facepalm: the fly vice is very much like a reloader. Hummm, :rofl: they both have recipes, you can make what you need to what you are after. You can go fishing pretty much anywhere, especially in the city. Not so much with shooting outside in the city!
Now photography cost have come way down with them finding a home on the phones! Digital cameras on phones have just about killed regular camera sales. What would we see in another 20 years! :tu:

I took a class.
Rod building is actually pretty straight forward and not too complicated if you follow the recipe (like fly tying). However, you do need a way to keep the rod spinning to have an even coating of epoxy around the thread wraps on the guides. The instructor had a nice little machine to leave the rod turning over night. Brilliant.
I can't justify buying a machine, since I don't really need to build more rods.......
I'd be open to taking another class at some point just for the fun of it though.
And it is really fun to catch a fish on a rod you've made yourself with a fly you've tied yourself.
Consider taking a class (I took mine through a local fly shop in Colorado, but a community college might have classes.). Building the rod gave me a better appreciation of rod-design and manufacturing. And I felt that it sort of tied me into the angling tradition a bit more. (pardon the pun.) A fun and satisfying experience. And it turns out to be the rod I use the most around here. (A 5 wt is fairly ideal. 4 wts for some smaller stuff. 6 wts for windier days)
