Not legal if they have the locking ring  :salute:

The number relates to blade length in Cm’s

The no10 feels about the same size as the buck110 in my hand (but lighter)

Lots about them here  :)

If I'm not mistaking, under #6 they are non loicking, so therefore UK legal. Oh and numbers are aproximate blade lenght in cm....

I have #8 carbon (it's added in auction with Jimmi Wallet) and it is 8,5cm blade...

#7 is 7cm blade...

And so on...

Check this out... They say NON LOCKING 8,5cm (it's #8), but check with them is it really non locking...

http://www.drapers-airguns.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=146_163&products_id=490 (http://www.drapers-airguns.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=146_163&products_id=490)

As a matter of fact, they have listed few other sizes in non locking!

The lock rings can be taken off pretty easily so all you have to worry about is the length.  That and the fact you have to peen the pivot so as it's nice and tight. :)

I'm 99% certain you used to be able to buy a non-locking No6, but I went looking for one myself last year and came up with nothing. :-\  A No5 is the largest non-locker I could find.  If you do better let me know. :tu:

I hate to disappoint you (and them) but you can clearly see the locking ring on that. :-\

All these are locking but at least HH give you the blade lengths in imperial: http://www.heinnie.com/Knives/Opinel-Knives/Opinel-Carbon-Steel-Folder/p-92-469-4069/ (http://www.heinnie.com/Knives/Opinel-Knives/Opinel-Carbon-Steel-Folder/p-92-469-4069/)  So a No6 (at 2 7/8") is the largest unmodified blade you can have.  Assuming you either remove the lock ring yourself, or buy it without one.  There really isn't anything to taking it off though.

For a non-locking Opinel you need to be able to see the pivot pin like here: http://www.heinnie.com/Knives/Opinel-Knives/Opinel-Carbon-Steel-Non-Locking-Folder/p-92-469-4716/ (http://www.heinnie.com/Knives/Opinel-Knives/Opinel-Carbon-Steel-Non-Locking-Folder/p-92-469-4716/)

I got a 9 and a 12, they look nice and work OK but I am always worried that if they get washed, the wood, especially in the knife groove, will swell.

However, you do need to get at least one!  ;)

I forgot to say if I keep mine in my garage (its nice and dry but without regular heat) after a few weeks its hard to open as it swells up very slightly, so keep it in the house Mate  :tu:

The wood does swell on an opinel, that's why that protrusion is there at the bottom of the blade slot. Grip the virolock and smack that pointy bit against something solid and the blade'll pop out a bit so you can get a better grip on it. I've got a couple of standard No6's and a red painted No8 .... DEFINITELY worth getting one!!!! I think Outdoorgb is one of the cheapest places to get them in the UK. Axminster tool used to do them too - not sure if they still do.

A few more points .....

Carbon's are better IMHO- but get a patina on them (just eat a couple of apples with it)
Open blade and virolock pops off apparently - but as Gareth says the pivot pin might need a wallop
Google opinel mods ... if you want a bigger handle on a legal blade, I'd suggest having a look at what some guys have done to theirs and get a bigger blade, pop off the lock, smack it with a tapping bat (peen) and shorten blade (dremel/grinder/file/whatever). Very nice legal option for well under a tenner plus generally NKP friendly and fun to modify  :tu:

I've found that no tools are needed to remove the lock. Simply close the blade, turn the lock so that the blade is locked closed, and then firmly but carefully open the blade. This forces the lock off, usually sending it flying across the room.
