Thought I would open this club for the elite among us who have had the great fortune of acquiring this unique and sought after gem.
I'll start with my new arrival:

1. REG'D TM 1325473 with Leatherman Japan on blade.
2. REG'D TM 1325473 with Leatherman only on blade.
3. US REG'D TM 1325473 hollow rivet. Leatherman only on blade. Bevel on can opener same as non US marked handles. Second handle blank.
4. US REG'D TM 1325473 solid rivet. Leatherman only on blade. Bevel on can opener different from non US marked handles and hollow rivet version with US markings on handles.
So there you have it.
-
Nice lineup indeed Dan.. :tu:
-
Not all of us own them. Why dont you all share the wealth :p
-
They show up in the for sale and trade sections of this forum very once in a while and on ebay. They usually dont last long so you need to be quick on the trigger to score one. Happy hunting. :)

How do you tell if it's from Japan? Stamp no stamp?
-
How do you tell if it's from Japan? Stamp no stamp?
Japan-made PSTs were put together with rivets (of various kinds) instead of knurled screws. :tu:
-
Also, the Japanese version does not have the USA mark stamped on the plier.
-
Here are some pics of a variation of the riveted PST I`ve been after for a long time. The two main differences are a large lanyard attachment and Japan Leatherman stamped on the knife blade. :)

Lanyard and knife stamp.

Welcome to the club, Kirky
So is it your fault somehow that I can't seem to find a JPST with the big lanyard attachment and "Japan/Leatherman" on the knife tang ?
I do have a couple of hollow rivet ( I think/hope ?) JPSTs on their way, one US PAT 4238862, the other US Reg TM 1325473. I'll give more details when they arrive downunder.
I should have joined this club a while back, but never mind, I'm here now :)

Greg those are as very hard to come by. I have not seen one of those in a couple years. But they do pop up once in a while. :)

Not sure why I haven't joined considering I am addicted to these MTs in a bad way.

I'd sort of figured that out, having never seen one for sale (ever  ). Even though I'm getting pretty good at picking out the very early knife blade shape and Japanese plier shape, despite the crappy photos you often get on eBay.
I guess I'll just keep on looking and hoping, and maybe one day I'll get lucky and find a 3 x PST bundle with one of these and also the early catalogue Cabela's and Early Winter PSTs; with a totally weird item title so no-one else has found them and I can snaffle them up for a B-I-N of $29.99 :D
Yeah, right, like that's going to happen any time soon !!!!

Nothing tricky or special, just the usual "blame Kirky for anything even though he had nothing to do with it" principle common on MTo. :pok: ;)

Oh well, highest bidder will win, as always ....... and if it goes to someone on MTo who will appreciate it then that is great :)

I wont be bidding on it. Those have been going way to high for what I consider them to be worth. I all ready have several and got them cheap before the things got into the present state of being. Every one else can knock them selves out bidding away. :D :D

When perusing LM PSTs (eg on ebay) look for rivets rather than the regular knurled screws that the made in USA PSTs all have. The v5 JPST is reasonably common (there are several on offer on US ebay at the moment), the V3 and V4 variants are less common.

Good Luck ! You'll need it, BO JPSTs are quite rare - as in the only one I know of anywhere is the one Vladimir has, and I've been collecting PSTs for a few years now.

Yep, only one I've ever seen. And what a pristine example .
That PST is a true treasure.

I've never even seen a US Black Oxide PST, so I can only imagine trying to find a Japanese model. I'd be happy with the conventional finish, believe me!

There are plenty of BO US PSTs around, they are quite often offered for sale on eBay. They were made with regular and cap crimper pliers. Mine (BO US PSTs) are dated between 1993 and 2003, so they were made for quite a long time.

How long were the PST made in Japan?

• Small diameter plier pivot
• Staked plier pivot
• Only LEATHERMAN cast into plier pivot
• No hard wire cutter notch
• One handle stamped: LEATHERMAN TOOL, US PAT 4238862, PORTLAND OR

• Drop point knife blade
• Knife tang stamped LEATHERMAN JAPAN
• Milled awl blade
• Off center screwdrivers pivot IN
• Can opener has left hand cut
(Note Japan tools appear to have several of their blades obtained from the same source as USA tools)
4] Changes to tools produced in Japan:
• Solid base rivets
• Lanyard attachment added
• One handle stamped: LEATHERMAN in large font. Also stamped TOOL, US PAT 4238862 (no PORTLAND OR)
• Other handle left blank
5] Still more Japanese changes:
• US PAT 4238862 replaced by REG’D TM 1325473
• Can opener has right hand cut
-
Mirror, Mirror on the wall,
Who's the largest Font of all?
Guess I've been lucky lately. Karma finally paid off. ;) 2 Large font J-PST's, and (I believe, a very early) Pocket Survival Tool with the thin-headed fasteners and no Lanyard attachment. Think one sheath is probably original to the tool too. Neither J-PST has Japan stamped on the blade tang.

Nice Monrogue
Thanks man. Now I need to get some pics up. I have several taken, but can't seem to get Tapatalk to play along. I noticed the tool end of the handles seem slightly wider than the plier end. Also, the handle splay is considerably wider than the "normal" PSTs.

This is an unexpected acquisition really. I never really look for them, and only came across this one by chance. Any I've seen before have been expensive, so I was surprised to find this one in such good condition at a fairly low price. The pliers look unused, and the only issues are some rust on the file and a slight burn mark above the "L", which is less noticeable in the pics.

Just received this today. It is in unused condition, factory edge still on the blade and it cuts paper.. Don't know if the sheath is original or not as it's a little used looking. It is different than any other PST sheath I have though so maybe it is original.

Very nice Steve  The sheath is probably original :tu: Probably worn by someone who belt carried the tool some but never used it much if any

The snap on the sheath is plain so its probably original.

Any anyone seen an explanation (from Tim Leatherman or otherwise) on why the splay of handles on the Japan Leatherman PSTs was signficantly wider than the US-made PSTs? I've always found the Japan PSTs to be really uncomfortable to use. Not that the US PSTs were super comfortable either, but the extra wide splay on the JPST handles just never fit my hand well.
In comparison photo below, the Japan PST is on the bottom.
-
I am thinking the really old US PSTs are the same and will try and compare them when I get home :salute:

I am thinking the really old US PSTs are the same and will try and compare them when I get home :salute:
I've got an early PST (ca. 1984) and although the handle splay on that tool is a little wider than the later PSTs, isn't as wide as the splay on the Japan pieces.
-
I agree the handles on the JPST are wider on a lot of them and not very comfortable to use. I dont know why they were made that way.. :D

Another rarity - presumably a factory error. Nice find (and a very good eye for detail in noticing it). :tu: :tu: :tu: :salute:
I've only ever seen JPSTs with "Leatherman" (only), "Leatherman, Japan" and "Japan, Leatherman" (the rare Large Lanyard variant).
-
Another rarity - presumably a factory error.
I think it's not error, it's standard variant of knife blade, but much more rare than the other (with stamps on tang) variants.
USPSTs also have such blades:

Thanks for the info :tu: :salute:
Hmmm, maybe I should have a closer look at some of my older USPSTs. TBH I only ever paid much attention to the tang stamps on my JPSTs
Edit: It seems I do have some USPSTs with blank tang stamps (well, according to my MT spreadsheet, anyway, which saved me from ratting through boxes of PSTs to check)
Every day can be a learning day if you let it - even if it is something you once knew ;)

I have one of these incoming with the hollow rivets. Never had a PST in hand and I’m really hoping I like the tool. Love the minimalist design. I’ll post pics when it arrives. Have you all found any functional/quality difference between the US vs Japanese built models?
-
Congrats on getting one of those  :like:
Except for the rivets those era PSTs are very similar quality wise from what I have seen :tu:
Can't wait for the pics :woohoo:

Welcome aboard!!

Hate to say it but it happened… many years after you wrote this, but I got my Early Winters PST last year from a posting listed as “Letterman” multi tool lot.

Found this club! :woohoo:
I found this with sheath, did not pay. Lose attention to tool until home, then thought I had been had as rivets used not knurled screws and plier head shaped with straight lines. Then found the blade tang stamped Japan. A Japan made PST, never thought I would hold one let alone own one.
It was neglected, and likely saw little use. Cleaned, soaked in Dawn for 24 hrs, then a soak in mineral oil and totally wiped down this morning.
Happy, as this now is my earliest LM tool! And 2nd PST!!

Awesome pics, LC :woohoo:  :like: :like:

Thank you.
Great find Lisa!
I didn't even know what I was buying at first. Came over here and found out by reading the 44 page PST thread. :tu:

Great score. With the sheath. Better yet!
And, so it starts!!!
 Celebrate!!! :woohoo:
-
Thank you LoopCutter.
I've had a multitool since 1986. First a Victorinox Camper, then various other models and other makes even Leatherman, but somehow this PST never got on my radar.
It has now and I think they're great!
-
My Dad had one of the very first ones back in 1983. I lost it unfortunately  There's a simplicity to them that is so appealing to me. SteveC found a nice JPST for me on the Bay, and I love it. I like the older ones best, but I have a couple of newer ones.

Permission to join?
Last week I found one by chance on the Bay over here. I was actually looking for something else :D
I received it today.
Am I guessing right it's a late '87 or '88 ?
The supposedly barely used JPST had some issues though. The large and medium flat head screw driver were twisted, the wire cutters had a little indentation and the philips wasn't looking good. Got that all sorted now as good as I could :P

The finish on one of the pliers mounting arms looks a little funky...

The knife blade seems unused.
How long were these made by Gerber? They were, weren't they?

The philips is not pretty but is working fine now...

Just seeing the question about the blade, Stitchy :salute:
I think those were made in Japan  and LM made their own blades in the US but used Gerber to heat treat them :tu:

Interesting story Tim told me about Gerber heat treating the blades was that as the volume of blades increased throughout the years, Gerber realized that there was a viable market and followed LTG into the Multitool market.
-
He told me that story as well :salute: and followed with "it is best to do everything in house if you can at all" :D

:like: Nice one LP!
-
Thank you😉
It was my 2nd PST model purchased! I found a BO model about a month ago, on the bay, at low BitN option, then last week a SS with initials and nice sheath even more economical.
Being a REBAR and STool fan, the PST is a great tool. Nd still amazes me I never had urge to obtain one until of recent (last several months). In fact I obtained a BOND before a PST🤪
-
Thanks Stitch and great find! It's the Centerpiece of my collection. +1 on the awl!!

All this JPST talk and I was about to unsheath all of these Japan variants, then I ran out of time.
So you can see some of them. Haha
There are some variants that were sold at Cabela’s hence the fancy sheaths.
I believe there are 4 unique JPSTs that have POCKET SURVIVAL TOOL written on the handle so I’ll need to unsheath those for you at some point.
I’m also not sure where all of my other boxes are, so there’s more to be revealed.

The great thing about them is that there are so many variants out there, but most people only think of them as old Leathermans so you can find some great ones at good prices. On the other hand, a lot of them have seen some hard use

Amazing collection, i didnt even know that pliers shape was so square at first.
Only Tools Matters

Antti, I agree. Once you get into the PST, the subtle changes are amazing.
-
:iagree:
Its amazing how many differences there are. The PST is a tool one can collect and have such fun with all the variations. Its also a very useable tool.
