Here's some pics of the damage from the ice storm that hit last night. It could have been a lot worse but it's still pretty impressive looking. In a way it's beautiful, except of course the pics of the limb on my car. Those suck. :-\

Bad luck mate :(, I hope there wasn't too much damage,
Actually I don't think we have much damage at all. The car may be scratched a bit but other than that we made out pretty good. It could have been a LOT worse. Had it rained a few more hours it would have been UGLY.
-
Is the weather often that bad down your way ???
-
Not all the time but in my part of the country we're too far South to get too much snow. Usually we get freezing rain which IMHO is worse. But most of the times these storms are small and the damage is limited, like the one last night. Occasionally, maybe once every 20 years we get a massive one. We had a massive one last year in the area, tens of thousands of people without power for up to two weeks. Fortunately, I missed that one last year, it literally missed us my a mile or so. This year we werent so lucky but this is a small one.
Spring is usually when we have our "wild weather". I live on the Eastern edge of "Tornado Alley" and tornadoes are fairly common in my part of the country. We've actually had a couple of outbreaks this year but usually they don't start until at least March.

Well at least unlike most people, your equiped to deal with the worst :)

Thats only coz idiot driver's can't cope ::), and grind everything else to a halt >:(

Good topic for today. Here's a shot from 5 minutes ago. No the picture is not out of focus - it's just snowing that hard. 4 inches so far with 4-6 more inches before it quits.

Glad to hear there's not too much damage to you and your stuff. I've heard ice storms can cause massive devastation so its good you've come out relatively unscathed. Ice does make things look nice though, especially trees
-
Our storm is starting now and It will be a doozy. I will have to take some picks of the place during the storm.

+1!!!!

That's a lot of snow. Usually when it snows around here it's enough to cover the ground. However, occasionally we'll get a good amount. Christmas Eve 2002 we had 13 inches of snow. And it was a complete surprise. We hadn't gotten our Christmas shopping done so we went to Wal-Mart and to the grocery store. We hurried and were on our way home about an hour later. The snow was already about 3" deep and I had to drive up a big hill with a 2wheel drive 3/4 ton Ford Pickup. Well I shouldn't say I drove, my wife(gf at the time) drove while I pushed and threw rocksalt under neath the tires.
Christmas day was kinda cool. We had just moved into town and didn't have internet and TV yet. This was also before we had a kid so of course we had to entertain ourselves that day. :D The other 23 hrs and 58 minutes we just hung out. :o :o :D :D

By "hung out" do you really mean "tried to catch my breath"? ;)

It's a sunny day today here in our place. We have only two seasons, the dry season and rainy season. I took a picture using my cell phone after my daily jogging routine this morning. On the horizon (at the left side of the electical post) is Mt. Kanla-on volcano. It is an active volcano and just few days ago it was emitting smoke and last year we have experienced some ash fall. The volcano is more or less 50 kilometers from where I was standing when I took the pic.
Can you see the crater?
-
:o I really wouldn't wan't to be living that close to an active volcano, but I supose you'd get use to it :-\
-
DTH, we got hit hard here in SE MO too. We got lots of rain after the initial sleet. There are 4-5 inches of ice in some areas. I'll post pictures of my damage later today.
-
I hope everything is OK with you.
-
I hope everything is OK with you.
Thanks. I'm fine, as is the rest of my family.
There are still about 18,000 people in my area without power. I have a wood stove and a gas water heater, so I'm still in business. My wife and I have six relatives living with us right now that are without any heat in their homes.
I have four 60ft. trees in my back yard, and three of them have lost their tops and large limbs. I had some foresight last spring and cut down three large trees in my yard. One was over my house and the other over my power lines. I've lost a shed and a fence but, thankfully, there's no damage to the house.
It's still cold today but the sun is out, so hopefully some of the ice will melt.
-
Glad you are all ok. :)
-
wow, ice storms are so pretty but so dangerous! glad your okay boss.

Wow, just like white Christmas!!!
WhichDawg, what is the name of that volcano on the 2nd pic?

Mt St Helens Ed. It's steaming/erupting all the time, waiting for another big one! :ahhh

That's a very famous volcano in the State of Washington! I've read in the news it's been continously erupting since 1980.
We are both residing in the vicinity of an active volcano, WhichDawg!

lol it's 35 miles "Down-Wind" mate, we should be fine, we could get some ash and feel some tremors but that's about it. ;)
-
you know Eddie, I always forget it's in the State of Washington and not Oregon! I've only been here since August and we're right near the Columbia River and the river curves down south around us then out east. I look at it directly east and forget! but how about it Eddie, we got real live Volcano's in our back-yards! We're special bro :D

Yes, WhichDawg we have something in common, a live volcano in our backyards. We are really special!

Well I finally got my car out from underneath the tree. No major damage, just a couple of dents and scratches. Now it just has character.

Well I finally got my car out from underneath the tree. No major damage, just a couple of dents and scratches. Now it just has character.
It's funny isn't it, once we get that first big scratch or dent, we just stop babying our vehicles :D
-
I've only babied one vehicle in my life. Which is ironic because it was one of my least reliable.
-
Which is ironic because it was one of my least reliable.
But thats what makes them special on some very strange level ???, of all the motorcycles I've had, it's the unreliable ones I remember most (not always affectionaly :D)
-
My god you are reading my mind. My first bike was a tetnus shot waiting to happen. A 64 BSA shooting star. It was a pile of junk. But I polished the rust every day, and when the chrome wore off the tank I Krylon painted painted it back.
I miss the old toilet :(
-
But it's the pieces of crap that make you learn how stuff works isn't it :)
I just wish they didn' make me learn all the bloody time ::) :D
-
It's cold, windy and it was drizzling when I went jogging at the park early this morning.

It's a sunny day!
We had another fun ride at 10 A.M. today until 3:00 P.M. It is more fun to ride on small streetbikes because it is easier to manuever along the winding and steep mountain road. Sorry, the pic taken by cell phone is not so clear.
Resting for a few minutes along the winding road. That's me second from the right.
This particular place has an elevation of 2,000 feet above sea level.

I've had a few step through bikes in my time, and they are all abosutely brilliant off road :)

It's getting hotter here. The highest temperature recorded today was 33 degrees C or 91.40 degress F. Everybody wants to go to the beach and stay there until early evening.

Nice picture WD. You live in an invironment free from city air pollution. BTW, how far is the city from your place?
-
about 15-20 minutes, and not a very big city
-
I lived in Chicago all my life, I like the clean, quiet air here much better!
and the smell of pine trees and sea air.
-
Eddie,that was a 650cc lightning.1968 vintage,had it up to 120 mph one time!!
-
I have actually seen one 650 lightning Chief. When I was a kid the father of one of my classmates owned one. And when that bike accelerates the sound of its engine exhaust is like an anti-aircraft gun. The bike is not in running condition now and sits in their garrage full of dust.
-
I did a wheelie with my wife on the back, and she was 7 mo's preg.,that was the last time she ever rode with me!!!!
-
Were you a daredevil during those days Chief?
-
No,just wild and crazy, thats the way it was back in the sixty's,and this post should give me my 100th.
-
Congrats Chief!

I love to visit your place someday Chief. Can you send us some pictures of the flatlands?

Eddie, you and Whichdawg need to come to the flatlands of Kansas and watch the wheat grow!!!
I read about crop cirles phonomenon in some states. Did this phenomenon also happen near your place Chief?

About the closest thing like that over Kansas is big circles made from irrigation, most of those sightings were in the UK,done as a prank with ropes and flat boards, and some pretty smart kids!!!
-
I haven't seen crop circles here in the Phil, but I have 5 fellow farmer who have seen flying balls of light in our fields, and those 5 farmers are not jokers they swore by it.

Nice picture Duckman. Thanks.

Use a nokia cell phone camera N73. Nice pic you post also, weather is weird here lately its hot during the day and will rain late in the afternoon, my goats are getting sick. Hows the weather there?
-
It wast too hot last week, maximum temp was 34 deg C during noontime. The last 3 days it rain every night. It's cloudy here now and the temp is 32 deg C.
-
duckman, is that last years corn or are triffids (man eating plants from space) growing!
I grew up in Illinois, so I know flatlands! I'll take the sea and mountains please!
-
Nope not triffids, sadly just your typical harvested yellow corn last month :D We will be planting yellow corn again after a few weeks, not for biofuel but for pig fuel :D Don't worry I will be posting pictures of the MYSTERIOUS GLOWING FLOATING BALL OF LIGHT, if I ever get the shot. Anyways one of the old farmer told me its called "Apoy ni Santa Elmo" or St. Elmo's fire.

Goodmorning Eddie, yes they are we planted them about 3-4 years ago it beside the perimeter fence.

It's too hot here, the temp. is 33 deg C. I took these pictures of the fruit bearing mango trees in my front yard at 2:13 P.M. or about an hour ago.

-
Goodmorning, those mango trees hope I got this right, grafted around 5 to 8 years old :D
-
Good morning too Donald! Yes, you are right. I planted those grafted mango trees 8 years ago.
Eddie
-
I planted a few myself but the mangos produced by my trees are smaller than the old big mango trees. Hows yours? Also planted a few mahogany.
-
I think the size of the fruits will also depend on the fruit density in every tree. Last harvest one tree produced few but bigger fruits. I still believed that older and bigger mango trees produce more and bigger fruits than young trees.
-
ummmm Mango and Guava I love'em.....
lost count of how many afternoons I've spent eating them....way up there in the branches....
and always whith some swis knife on my side ....live can be very easy and sweet some days...

Tropical Storm 'Cosme' makes landfall over western Pangasinan.
abs-cbnNEWS.com - 5/17/2008 6:54:36 PM
The Philippine’s weather bureau on Saturday hoisted public storm warning signal no. 3 over six provinces in Luzon as tropical storm Cosme (international codename, Halong) made landfall over western Pangasinan Saturday. In its 5:30 p.m. update the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) reported Cosme has changed its direction a bit and has made landfall over western Pangasinan, after it was first expected to hit land over Ilocos Sur.
Duckman, take all necessary precautions.

Not so much of a pic but more of a poor quality video . It shows a rough sea hammering our coast line . Believe me the sea is alot bigger then it looks in the video and if you had gone to the bottom of that ramp you probably wouldnt have come back as it would have knocked you off your feet , the waves were breaking over your head .you can see when I turn round just how close the village is to the sea and all that stands between it is that wall .

Now thats a pretty heavy sea state mate, I hope you don't get a call out in it :(
When its that bad we couldnt even launch :o The Enviroment agency closes the flood gates so we couldnt get through plus it would be certain death in a sea like that with a boat like ours . Theres many stories in old times with brave men dying trying to launch lifeboats in huge surf , thats the most dangerous part the surf once your past that you can ride the waves to some degree . were tasked upto a force 6 but although it doesnt look that bad on the vid it was beyond that .

Thanks eddie, got hit pretty bad last night. Its the biggest storm to hit us for the last 5-7 years. We are okay.

Thanks God you are all ok. I hope the damage to infrasturctures were minimal. We are lucky here in the Central Visayas because we only experienced heavy rains for 3 days and no strong winds.

Great pix!
Here's one from a couple nights ago. California has had really bad luck with fires so far this year. We've had 3 big ones close to us and a few days ago we had the wierdest lightning storm I've ever seen. It started over 600 fires that day since everything is crispy dry right now.
Anyway, the night of the last fire, I went outside at midnight or so and looked up and the freaking moon looked like it was bouncing (I guess from the heat waves). I woke everyone up in the house and we all sat outside and stared at it for over an hour. Truly one of the strangest things I've seen.
I tried to take a video, but the battery for the recorder was dead.
Shot a lot of pictures becasue the sky looked so cool though.

I was bracketing but if I remember right it was around f3 for 1/30 sec at ISO800 ?? I cropped out a lot of dark sky.
There's a bunch of programs out there that let you click on a web photo and get all that info. Look for a free download of Opanda.
You can find all the specs on any web picture (camera type, date, all the settings, iso modes, exposure etc. ) with it.

That's a nice low noise shot for ISO800. That 20D is serving you well.

I think the background helps with that a little, but I've taken daytime shots with a 400mm and had to shoot at 800 ISO to freeze sports late in the afternoon and it does well.

It rained so hard the whole night until dawn that the park was deserted when I arrived there at 5:30 A.M.
Of course, part of the reason could be the fact that it is 5.30 AM. :D

No ben, at 5:30 a.m. there are already many people jogging, walking and playing basketball. Here is another picture I took on that same day (June 29). The baketball court was also deserted. I'll take another picture at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow.

You wouldn't get that here Eddie. :) And if you did, it's probably due to them being drunk and playing all night. :D
