I once had about 20 zippos..mostly basic models, nothing fancy. Now i'm down to 5 that i can find.
Still have my first one though, bought it when i went to Johnson Space Center here in Houston Texas back in the early 80s. I must have burned up half of east Texas with it while in scouts. All the cool scouts carried zippos..and mostly got confiscated by the scoutmaster.
Think I might start collecting again. Just certain ones that appeal to me. Need a good way of display/storing them as to not scratch them. I have 2 users for fireworks and bbq lighting...the plain brushed and the wolf. I bet Napoleon Dynamite carries a wolf zippo.

anyway..show em if you got them.
something funny i learned last week...supposedly a white lighter is bad luck as Bob Marley , Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin all kicked while having one in their possession.

Cheers Pacu  :twak: I was just thinking I'd kicked the Zippo habit, this could cause a regression
I'll get some pics of mine done soon

i do what i can >:D

Here's mine!!! Got it for Christmas a couple of years ago from my parents. Been with me since…

nice ones people. I only have a Harley Davidson one
-
I gave all mine away when i´ve quit smoking 20 years ago.
Other than the usual BICs in and around the house, i only have a original and still unused IMCO 6700.
-
Looks like I gotta get a group picture of mine tomorrow. Think I'm down to 5 or 6 at the moment.
Unfortunately, when you stop smoking, it gets a bit harder to remember EDC'ing a Zippo. I used to always have a Zippo on me, no matter where I was. Now, I actually have to ask my girlfriend, whenever I need a lighter.
-
As promised, a group picture, standing in the order in which I got them, from left to right.
The first one, I got from a school-mate about 8 or 9 years ago. I think it's a genuine Zippo, but not 100% sure. The lid has snapped off, so the pin has been replaced with a paperclip.
Number 2, is actually the third Zippo I got. The second Zippo was the exactly same model, but I lost it on a bus.
Number 3, is also from a school-mate. He got it during a 140-year anniversary of a brewery. I never got around to paying him for it...
Number 4, was one I gave to my dad as a Christmas present. When he passed away, I "inherited" it and it now sits on the shelf, being only used for special occasions.
Number 5, is a bit of an oddball. I found at the parking lot of my girlfriends school home. There' no telling how long it had been there, but it was pretty scratched up, but in perfect condition, besides that. It's become my "Project Zippo", as I'm still trying to find a nice color for it. It's been sanded down and spraypainted a few times by now and is the only Zippo is use for practicing tricks.
Common to all of them: No matter how bad they get messed up, if they start loosing their hinge-lids, looses the cam spring, flint-wheel flies off... No matter what, I'll problably never send any of them in for repairs, as they all have a special story to them. I don't wanna risk that they'll send me a new one and keep the old case; if that happened, I might as well just take my girlfriend for a ride and buy a new one from the store, which will then start getting its own story.
-
nice collection Freaver!
I like the backstories of how people acquired their EDC stuff and collector pieces.
-
I have 2 Zippo's, but only use one, with a jet flame insert. Keeps me from smelling like Zippo fluid.
-
I only have one, it has my ship's emblem on it. I will dig it out and take a pic soon
-
I think I have two or three of them, even made a sheath/holster for one, but I don't have any use for them anymore, I used to use one for lighting a torch for plumbing, worked great and safe since it's not under pressure, and also used to light my cigars, but I quit that, so there floating around here somewhere.. JR
-
I guess this is the time to throw this out there... If any of you have old Zippo's lying around, that just collect dust in a drawer, I'll be happy to take them off your hands.
-
I quit smoking quite some time ago but still have the odd Zippo knocking about...this one is a favourite ;)

I newer owned a Zippo when i smoked. I owned a Ronson butane lighter that i loved. I carried it all the time, everywhere. I carried it long after i stopped smoking. That is probably why my wife threw it to washing machine without checking my jeans fift pocket. But hey, it still works. Only its covers got slight damage to it. I'd love to find same lighter new one of these days...

How do you like it so far? I've been thinking about one of those inserts for some time but never pulled the trigger.
-
I am still on my first gas bottle after slightly over a year. Daily use. Works like new. The insert seems more reliable then the torch lighter I had before.

I have two older Zippo lighters and a black Zippo leather case with belt clip (not shown).
I carried the Kennecott lighter in my jeans pocket in the early 1970s, but didn't enjoy the leg rash from lighter fluid vapors. Kennecott is a copper mining company.

Bought my Zippo in Vancouver in about March or April 1995. I gave up smoking about 3 years after that but still have the Zippo.
Doesn't get much use these days as I so infrequently use a lighter that a Zippo would have gone dry between uses.
And I'm another one who doesn't miss the surprise feeling after pocketing an overfilled Zippo

Edc a Zippo slim from 1991 I bought second hand, actually it is older than me.
Just love the style, but also is an excellent bug out tool, you can fill it with almost everything that ignites and can use flints from disposable lighter.
I hear allot of comments of people switching to bic lighters.
I have the feeling the world keeps getting lazier, it looks like people do not have the time to fill there Zippo, it takes approx 30 seconds every week.
Disposable lighter, disposable dishes, knives, wife's, cars, cellphones. Where are we going with this world.
A century ago nothing was disposed, everything was reused repaired refilled.
Think of all the pollution we would save if we reused or refill our products.

I have a few ZipLights and several Zippo Fixxits (but no actual lighters, I just don't seem to need to burn stuff very often). Sorry, no photos.

These are my everyday use Zippos. A regular size and a slim model.
I have some Zippo collector items including lighters, measuring tapes and magnifiers, you can see here:

My Zippo story....
When I was a student I worked as a barman at a rugby test between the Springboks and the Lions, not much work, we had a beer tasting, and I earned enough to buy the gun metal Zippo I'd been lusting after.
Living in a hostel there are many bad influences, my sense of humor tends to the dark (and British) side, so when I got home I wanted to get my pride and joy Gun Metal Zippo engraved with the following from a t-shirt:
Adolf Hitler European Tour
1939-1945
I thought this was extremely funny, the German lady doing the engraving didn't, and most likely messed it up on purpose....she was quite upset.
I was 19
-
I have several......but not that one :D
-
I have maybe three or four kicking around. The two I know the whereabouts of are a 2007 and a small brass 1995 one. I know I have an older brushed stainless one somewhere too - possibly 1992ish. I have a suspicion I have at least one other, but can't think what or where
-
@Gerhard,
No sense of humour some people :D
@Al

Got only two Zippos myself, one that I have had for 18 years, it is a basic silver mirror finished zippo that I had engraved when I enlisted in the US Army (got it my senior year of high school), the other is a newer silver Zippo with the brushed/frosted appearance.
Only had a pic of the engraved Zippo as the other one is currently MIA in my car (fell out of pocket between the center console and the seat, haven't been motivated enough to try and get it out, lol).
The engraved Zippo is part of my EDC right now.
-
 Waiting for pictures of the MIA
:pok: You know the seats have got to come out :D
-
I became hooked on Zippos in 1984 when someone in a factory told me their reputation for indestructibility.
Filled one up from petrol pump dribbles after cars had left when broke hitching
I keep them even when I get off the evil weed
These days I favour the Armoured style, always preferred brass (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160206/44e863bf01e5db1e7130c3a40efaaf95.jpg)

Well got the MIA Zippo, didn't pull out the seat since they are powered seats and didn't want to hassle with disconnecting everything. Method I used to get it out is the most ingenious method, I bribed my 5 year old nephew with some candy to reach under the seat and get it for me.
Included pics of it by itself and with my engraved Zippo.

Does anybody happen to know where I can find a Zippo slim butane insert with a flint wheel? All I can find are the piezoelectric ones.

Is anyone else into the "Fixxit" promotional tools ?
I like the ones made by Case for Zippo (slide out knife blade and screwdrivers), and they came with quite a variety of advertising labels (including several different "Zippo" ones). I believe they were designed by Blackie Collins.

The nice thing about using a white gas stove is that you can use it in your Zippo. Since it is a lighter distillation, I've found that a fill will evaporate a day or so sooner than Lighter fluid. No big deal though...start out with a fill of Lighter fluid and top off with white gas if needed.
I've modded some of my user Zippos to loss-proofs. The two plain ones at top left are factory models and the rest have bails made from piano wire. Another advantage is that the hinge pins no longer slip out.
I also use the Thunderbird soft flame inserts with spark wheels...don't like piezo ignition because I've had so many failures with them.
-
I think that a lot more people would carry a zippo if the knew all the posibilities that a zippo can offer.
Most people just see it as a stinking lighter that has to be refilled every week. I see it more as a campfire in a metal (brass :D ) box. No other lighter can compete with it.
Throw away butane lighter: poor quality, not refilable and when it is refileble i am dependent on gas can which will run out any time soon. Also the flint will wear out.
Windproof butane burner lighter: Piezo electric ignition rules out the flints but i also see it as a week spot because i cant repair it. It also depends on butane gas and when that gas runs out the lighter is useless.
Firesteel: is great when i combination with cotton balls or some kind of tinder but without cotton balls it is only good for lighting a gas stove.
Zippo: it lasts a life time, costs 5 euros used, also runs on flints from throw away lighters and best of all runs on every liquid that is ignited by a spark. On a full car fuel tank a zippo will light a lifetime. You can also ignite it with a firesteel.
With a zippo i am basicaly independent on stuf that i can't produce by my self.
Because i have a little bit of a prep mind set i like products where i am not dependent on other manufcaturers etc...
I really like that i can put it on a table and that it keeps burning, this is especially handy to use it as a candle to light a room or the use it as a starting flame to light acetylene torches.
It works great outside because it is windproof and is really handy in starting cam fires or warming up your hands.
I also used it to unfreeze frozen locks in the winter, used it to heat up a spark plug so the moped would start again and a dozen of other uses.
I have the zippo fuel can (which i refilled with cleaning fuel) besides my bed and every friday before i get out of bed i refil my zippo, it only takes 15 seconds to do so.
You can also put an old bycelcle inner tube and cut it about an inch wide and put it around the zippo case where the hinge is. This should slow the evapouration proces and also make it water proof.
I hope this gets more people in to carrying a zippo, because for the (second hand) price you cant go wrong with a tool that will outlast you.

Hi Spork,
Nice!
I guess you 'just' replace the hinge pin with wire?
-
Yes, that's correct Sparky...but the wire has to be close to the same diameter of the pin...otherwise you get floppy hinge.
I found a small binder clip that worked for a knockoff lighter but for the Zippos I bent the loops from piano wire...copying the shape of a factory Loss-Proof

My hinge was replaced somewhere around 2000 2001. I might try to put in a larger pin it it because the brass hinges have probably worn out a bit.
It isn't that wobbly but aint that tight either.
My current pin is made from a small nail that i cut to the right length.

One of my Zippos. This one has a leaping Bass engraved on it and was my first Zippo. I run it with a butane torch insert.

Of course you should keep it in pristine condition. If you ever want to edc a zippo just buy a second hand beater for 5 euros. Most of them are as new because people have never used them.
Today i replaced the pin in my zippo's hinge with a 0.3mm larger diameter brass nail that i cut to the right lenght.
Now the hinge is much less wobbly then it used to be. This is probably the last oversized pin that i can use before the hinge has to be replaced by zippo. That will be the second time the hinge will be replaced. The previous time was with the previous owner in 2001.
But that will probably will take antother year or two.
I don't know why the hinge was replaced in 2001. But the zippo was build in 1990 and has always been edc carried. concluding from that is that with a couple of hinge pin replacements and squeezing the brass higne with pliers the average hinge will last between the 10 and 20 years depending on if you play with it a lot.

Picked up some supplies for my possibly (fake) Zippo.
-
Got a sheath for it too. I added a ranger band to "test" how long the fuel will last. One thing for sure is the seal the ranger band created is great. The vapor seems to stay within the lighter because when I go to spark it, poof the vapor ignites. I think this is a good sign the ranger band is keeping the fuel from escaping via vapor . Did I say that right?

I found it didn't add a lot of life to my fuel, but maybe I didn't have a narrow enough piece of inner tube...

I tried the inner tube hack for a while...it did extend fuel storage for a while but wasn't convenient to use. I like butane inserts better and ended up converting about half of my lighters.

I used the link I provided in my earlier post. The insert is poorly done and the hinge looked off. I also noticed the pattern on the wheel that strikes the flint is not what it supped to be. Its really not a big deal actually. The lighter real or not works great. It also IMO is terrific looking.

Isn't it difficult to use the lighter? It takes some time and effort, I'm guessing, to remove the ranger band before being able to lit it, right?

I found it much more cumbersome. Since I wasn't seeing much in fuel savings I dropped the ranger band and went with a butane insert.

I don't take it off I just roll down the top and while its a bit slower than normal its not terrible. I can see why however the inserts would make so much more sense. I don't smoke but boy I'd be pissed if I went to light one and my Zippo was out.

This thread has made start looking for Zippos. I got a few (very) cheap knock-offs at home. Tried some Zippo tricks I saw on YouTube but they don't work so well. Feel like getting a real one just for playing around...

Not bad for a few bucks. I think all in I spent >$10 including lighter, 2 fuels, a new wick, and the leather Zippo sheath ( real one ). I rarely eat take out so I figured why the heck not.
-
I'm not a smoker and most days I would not need a lighter.
What do you guys think about a Zippo getting infrequently used? Will it get dry? When is a Zippo lighter better than a liquid gas lighter? Which one runs sooner out of fuel?
I'm asking because I have never owned a Zippo and I'm curious if it is something worth for me to have.
-
Engblom: In my experience; when you don´t use the lighter frequently and do not maintain it in some time the Zippo lighter will dry out and you don´t have a lighter when you need one.
I quitted smoking cigarettes on 18th August 2013 and I never touched such a coffin nail again. But I like to smoke pipe and cigars when the weather is fine and I can have a nice hour or two outside somewhere. I never used a Zippo ever since. I need a lighter ever few weeks during summer. I keep a disposable Bic lighter in EDC daypack. It works fine. Need no maintaining and will not dry out, like fuel lighters do.
But if it comes to style ... a Zippo is mighty fine and elegant. Still have one or two around anywhere in the house

In all honesty get a bic or similar in your area. If you rarely use a lighter then the reliability of a bic IMO wins hands down.
Converting a Zippo as some have done is a great compromise between the nostalgia of a Zippo and reliability of a disposable ( Bic ).
For me getting the Zippo was about fun. I do have disposable lighters scattered around for when I really need a light :tu:

The main problem I have with Butane lighters (Disposable and Refillable) is that they don't work well in cold weather. Since I like camping and hiking I love having a zippo as I can use it to no matter the weather to light a fire for warmth or to light the solid fuel tabs for cooking on my collapsible pocket stove (yes I do practice fire safety when camping and hiking and will never leave the fire unattended, or leave the site until the coals are extinguished). I also when camping or hiking will keep my zippo in a water proof container along with other items I do not want ruined if they get wet.
Now thats not to say I wont carry butane lighters, as I do have one or two disposables in my Bug out Bag and my camping/hiking gear, though these are primarily for backup use only.
-
The Zippo will require attention, meaning it will dry out. You are very right in some instances the Zippos is a good alternative. Hands free is great feature. Having the material inside ( cotton? ) for tinder is another.
Sure is fun to play with thats for sure. Go ahead a get one, I cannot believe they are too costly.

I've been experimenting with lanyards for my lighters...this is what I put together today

After getting a Zippo, i couldn't prevent myself from getting an IMCO

Nice lighter.
SO its been a week today since I filled my Zippo and it light right up no problem this morning. We'll see how it goes tomorrow which will make 8 days. Not really sure the ranger bands are aiding or not .
-
I'm running a Ronson Typhoon this weekend...doing some lanyard work. It is slightly smaller and slimmer than a standard Zippo. I have the Ranger band on it for grip.
-
Figured out a new lanyard rig...using McMahon snaps (aka scissors snaps). It's very low profile, secure and easy to put on and take off.
-
Lit right up tho the flame only lasted a moment. It would have easily lit a candle or paper but I decided to refill at this point and will call it 8 days total.
I guess not bad if you used your Zippo everyday and had a regular routine of filling.
-
Just got this one...Grey Dusk with Skulls and Crossbones. I think it is some sort of printing process...not engraved.

I'm not sure, the photo doesn't do it justice. The surface is smooth...like a lacquer coating and the light has to hit it at the right angle to see the skulls.

I refill my Zippo every friday night so without a band around it it will definatly last a week. It will probably light after two weeks but after a short time it just cuts out because the little bit of vapour runs out. A zippo doesn't really cut out. The flame gets weaker and weaker and after a while the wick burns red. At this moment you want to put out your zippo because it will decrease the life span of your wick very fast.

Very nice Zippos guys  I have even saw a few tricks and added a couple things to my want list cause of this thread :D
Here is the Zippo I have had for around 18 years now
(http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e276/poncho6556/20160319_141252.jpg) (http://s41.photobucket.com/user/poncho6556/media/20160319_141252.jpg.html)
I have a few others that I have gotten over the years, some passed down from family and have bought a few :tu:
-
Latest Zippo : I don't know its name or model number as I didn't find it in the catalogs, It is from 2013 (June for the insert, May for the case)
The hinge has suffered from the previous owner, It needed to get squeezed with pliers ... but it's not a bad deal: 3€
-
I'm lazy so I threw my knife into the picture so I can use the same picture in the traditional challenge thread, but anyway, here are my Zippos. Solid brass pipe lighter, copper standard lighter, and silver paisley pattern engraved with my initials. I bought my first, the silver lighter, and had it engraved when I was 16 years old in 1982 or '83. I can't remember when I bought my second, the pipe lighter, but I've had it for at least 20 years. My third Zippo is the copper one. I found it in a thrift store and I think I paid a dollar for it.

Added some gaucho knots with 1.4mm string around one of my street chrome Zippo lighters... :P

I love my zippo lighters. Have a "few". Quite smoking 6 years ago. The zippo is brilliant in winter time In Australia. But in the hot summer times is became a big slap. Ended up fueling it up every day. Its just too hot in the outback to use one. Tried many different fluids. Some beter than other. Ended up with a BIC lighter.
But don't leave the butane lighter in the car on your dashboard!!!!

NASA one is my oldest, used heavily in Boy Scouts. Bought as Johnson Space Center in Houston during the good ole shuttle days in the late 80s.
Newest is my cup of shut the hell up I found at a south Texas convenience store. It was calling my name since it applies to a lot of coworkers . ::) ::)
-
My only zippo is an armor case brass pipe lighter that I got back in June. The only pics I have are when it was new. It has a patina now.
-
I found a 30 count store display recently. Local gas station was clearance on all their Zippos. I asked the lady what they were doing with the case when they sold the last one. She said probably toss it. I asked if I could help her out and save her a trip to the garbage. :D
It's got some store wear but not bad for free. Even came with 2 keys.

well damn, that is nice.
got a question for those that have brass Zippos. since brass can get that green oxidation on it, did you ever have any issues with it staining you, your clothes or gear? I know a lot of copper mixtures tend to leave those green marks on the skin (cheap street jewellery) but how is it with brass specifically?

My brass pipe lighter is over 20 years old and has never turned green or stained me or my clothes. I think I may have seen some green oxidation once near the hinge but it wiped right off. Or, I might be remembering oxidation on my copper lighter. In any case the Zippos have a good finish and take on a nice patina and I've never had a problem from staining.

Mine is only a year old, but it has patinad. I also only carry it when I'm actively smoking, which is probably less than an hour a week. That being said, I've not had the patina leave any marks on me or my clothes.

The bottom right zippo is all brass to include the innards and has not been polished since about 1989-90 (??) time frame. No green, no mess, no marks left on clothes or skin.

being a non-smoker and a hiker, I had issues with starting fires.
Yeah I know, two sticks, but honestly, working up a sweat to start a fire, no thanks.
For a wile I carried a flint rod, but I broke it
then I tried the old bic, but it actually fell apart one day.
I used something called a fire pump, was OK but not 100% successful in a hurry.
Then I bought an old Zippo.
Still have it 10 years later.
I have to refill it every time i want to take it anywhere, but that's no different from my old fountain pens I like to use.
I fill them every day to both flush them and top up the ink.
I have replaced the flints several times, they wear out, and the wick once (due again I think)
But for guaranteed lighting no matter what the weather, it is the most reliable thing I have.

Hi. What is the value of a Zippo final production, Collectors Edition, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, 2002?
I can see is one on Ebay now. I really want one.

Not knowing how prices go on Zippos (I have several myself but know the prices of some are way higher than others) but if it is a price you feel comfortable paying then get the lighter :salute:
Also a big welcome to :MTO:

Looks like the smaller style Zippo(used to be called the lady zippo), so maybe feminine related? Seeing as it has the little jewel pieces. :dunno:
What is the date on the base?
If it is a certain vintage, it'll have a date mark system, and just search google for Zippo date charts. That should narrow it down a bit. :tu:

Thought the non-zippo on the right might be interesting here. There are a couple of nice antique/consignment stores near me, and I picked this one up for the fine mechanicals. No markings on it other than "silver"over"mexico" on the snuffer arm. I can't tell if it ever had an outer sleeve/lid or not.
The zippos are my previous and current edc.

For those who do not know Zippo finally came out with their own butane torch insert and on 31Oct will be releasing a plasma arc insert. These will fit into any standard Zippo in place of the normal insides.
I mention this because I have collected Zippos for several years but never carried them, until discovering the Thunderbird butane insert. The inserts allow me to carry my favorite Zippo lighter without having to worry about the liquid fuel leaking or evaporating (I’m not a smoker so don’t use often, but like to carry a lighter for just in case). The Zippo inserts are even better built than the Thunderbird ones being all metal instead of mostly plastic. The plasma one will allow micro usb recharging instead of needing fuel.
For those that might still want a Zippo style flame, but in butane, Thunderbird does have a yellow flame insert.

Newbie here! Hi everyone.
I recently discovered this at a tobacconist that I work at and I have zero knowledge about zippos as we stopped carrying them but would anyone happen to know the value of this? I've seen $10k+ on zippo's website but that seems pretty high.

I doubt you're still looking here for a reply after three months, but if so, I'll take a shot.
The original MSRP on these was $12,850.80 (see https://therichtimes.com/the-18-karat-solid-gold-zippo-lighter/ ).
There are several listed on ebay right now for about $10,000 - $12,500. If yours is a brand new, pristine, never-lit example with all original box and papers, it might go for something in that range to the right buyer, though obviously the market for lighters costing five figures is somewhat limited. Condition is everything to collectors, however, so if your example has been carried, lit, marked up by handling in the store, missing any of the original paperwork, etc., that will cut its value significantly.
P.S. You could easily verify this with a postage scale or similar, but the solid 18 kt gold case probably contains about 44 grams of 18 kt gold, so the value of the precious metal alone should be $1800 or so. (The insert, while gold-colored, is not actually made of gold.)
P.P.S. The 18 kt solid gold lighter on Zippo's website currently (not a limited edition) has an MSRP of $11,893.95. ( https://www.zippo.com/products/solid-gold?_pos=1&_sid=23abee7c5&_ss=r )

My Moms Dad passed away about 6 years ago and she kept his Zippo and then I got it from her. Fact of the matter is, I could not find any information on it what so ever and I only found a few pictures of it online but not seen it being sold on any websites. If anyone here knows when it was sold new and how much it might be worth in its current state. I plan on keeping it because it is definitely unique in my opinion

Hello Kyle!
Neat keepsake from your Grandpa; it looks well-used/carried too.
If we could get a clear picture of the bottom of the lighter, that would be helpful. There should be some information stamped there.

No picture of it at the moment but I have one with an american flag faded. Looks real nice. Father in law gave it to me a few years ago as a birthday gift. He passed in June so I think itll just stay in the box it came in. :tu:

Thanks Kyle, that’s perfect.
“XIII” indicates it was manufactured in 1997, with “E” denoting May of that year.
As I said, its cool to have as a keepsake from your Grandpa, but from a purely monetary standpoint, I doubt it is worth much at all...
For one thing, condition is everything with regard to collector value. This example appears to have been used and carried, with no box or papers. For another (and perhaps even more to the point), Zippos in general tend not to sell for crazy amounts of money, unless there is something truly exceptional about them, e.g. used and carried by someone famous (with documentation to back this up, of course), or perhaps if they are very old and in still in excellent condition. Another exception is solid gold Zippos (as discussed earlier in this thread) which may contain several thousand dollars worth of 14 kt or 18 kt gold, even if sold only for the scrap gold value.

Hello. :D
I guess I can join this club. This was my birthday gift from my girlfriend.
Also, I would like to assemble it, and my girlfriend keeps asking if I have, so I think I should.
The thing is, I do not want to just assemble it and have the fluid evaporate in a week.
What can I do?
I saw Zippo are making a butane insert, and I would get it, but it has so many negative reviews, I've decided against it.
-
:like: great design on that Zippo RP
The fluid usually takes at least a month to evaporate on mine, think it’s just part and parcel of owning a Zippo but no longer smoking
I keep a peanut lighter on my keychain and get much better mileage because it has a thin O ring, not sure if something could be made for the zippo, probably wouldn’t close properly is the problem I think
-
The Zippo butane insert works well enough in my experience, I also use (and recommend) a soft flame insert from Vector (the Thunderbird I believe).
If you want to use fluid with the case she gave you then evaporation is just something you'll have to deal with, depending on your use it shouldn't completely dry up that quickly. Just consider it part of your EDC maintenance routine. That said there are some options for it:
-Throw a ranger band over the split in the case to minimise evaporation
-You can buy gaskets that create more of a seal on the bottom of the insert than the felt pad does (and also has space for spare flints)
Enjoy your Zippo, if it's your first they're a helluvalotta fun :tu:
-
Evaporation is just part of the Zippo experience/ownership. I've tried a few options and from my experience non really made a difference. Maybe its my environment maybe its other factors. They are neat thats for sure and there is something cool about a Zippo. Maybe its the ting when opened or the smell of it when lit. Whatever it is there is bound to be one that catches the eye.

I have some experience with the single torch insert…
Pros:
- Odorless (unlike the traditional liquid fuel)
- Jet/torch flame is very wind-resistant
- Allows you to use your favorite Zippo case
Cons:
- Needs to be refilled frequently. Zippo claims up to 100 lights per fill. I didn’t conduct a scientific study, but in real world use it seemed to be somewhat less than that.
- Doesn’t store well. I filled one and had it sitting around as a backup, but when I finally tried to use it, it didn’t light.
- “Refillable” does not mean “will last forever”.
Not really a pro or con, perhaps more a quirk, was that I found they would almost never light on the first try, but almost always would light on the second try. So I got in the habit of double-tapping the ignition every time, which produced the desired outcome.

Congratulations.
As for evaporation, butane inserts are really the best solution. Of several different brands of inserts I have tried the Vector/Thunderbird inserts have been the most reliable, especially the soft flame.
Another solution is to use a ranger band around the opening. The ranger band will slow evaporation. I had also tried these caps for the bottom of the insert, but they didn’t seem to stop or even slow evaporation.

Hi! I have a 50 years and glowing stronger zippo lighter but i am nlot sure if it's real or not...
On the bottom stamp it has the zippo brand name and the bradford p. a. it also has the seriak number J V . But it has not the made in usa...
So I would like to know if it's real or not and if it's real is it worthy?
Thanks for your time!!!

Here is one of my favorite Zippos with a Zippo soft flame butane insert.
My Zippos never saw much carry until I discovered the Butane inserts. I just recently discovered the actual Zippo brand soft flame and really like it.

Is it just me or do the Zippo lighters need constant refilling.
I don't use mine often, as I don't smoke.
But I carry it for camping and within a week, only lighting a few fires and it's dry again.
I have to carry fuel with me and that seems to be rather pointless.

Would the Zippo butane insert suit your usage better ?

It’s pretty normal for all the fuel to evaporate out of a Zippo within a week or two, give or take depending on environmental conditions. This evaporation may be somewhat slowed by sealing the lighter in a ziploc bag, purpose-made case, or even using a simple rubber band.
Ultimately, though, as cool as Zippos are, they just aren’t the optimal choice for hiking, camping, or survival kits. My recommendation is to toss three full-size Bics in your pocket or pack for about the same weight as one Zippo, at a total cost of about $3. Replace any that fail to light or otherwise give you any trouble at the next opportunity, and you should be good to go.

The drying out is from fuel evaporation and is the reason I like butane inserts, no evaporation.
As nate j said, a few Bics will last longer and be less weight for camping. This is why as much as I love my Zippos, for camping and emergency bags I use Bics or Clipper lighters.
If wanting to carry a Zippo specifically, for nostalgia or have favorite, then recommend getting a butane insert. You won’t experience the evaporation and will last longer.
-
I have a few Zippos that I like but don't use (I even already lost [somewhere in my stuff] the lastet Zippo Slim I found at a flea market last week), and at least a Bic in every bag (and I don't smoke)
-
Zippos are cool and fun if you collect different ones. I had one but sent it down the road and while I could have got a insert I'm really just to lazy to refill when needed . Mini and full size Bic for me.
I do enjoy seeing all the really neat ones folks have. I even like the "tricks" some do with them.
-
Ha yeah zippo's are cool.
We were barbecueing with neighbors in the driveway one cool winter's evening, and one of the neighbor brothers asked me why I didn't inhale the first pull after lighting my rolly (Pronounced 'role-ee' duh j/k). I told him it was because the burnt fuel from a zippo could affect the taste of that drag and the rest of the smoke, too.
He thought I was cool, and that that was a really cool thing to know. I didn't know he was a connesieur (sp?), and I didn't know he thought I was cool. haha
Zippos for cool and context, bics for everything else!

The taste factor is another thing you don’t have to worry about with the Butane insert. Now if you want to be really cool, the next time you light your rolly in front of him, you should have a Zippo with the butane cigar/pipe insert.

Its really neat thats for sure. I picked one up and did some cleaning and it fired right up. I wont use it but it was sure neat to see work.
Sos got me thinking with her Zippo insert post. I'm not sure I'd have kept my Zippo even with an insert. Maybe I'll pick one up again at the flea market and have a go again.

The main reason I carry a Zippo is the nostalgia and fidget factors. I have a few from Navy ships and it is more fun to carry and play with than just leaving on a shelf or in a box. They are also safer to fidget with than a knife.
The sad thing is I had more but Customs/TSA confiscated several. They all had the stickers still on them showing that they never had fuel in them, but they were taken anyway.
-
I have always liked Zippos. When he smoked it was the lighter he always used. When I quit smoking I stopped using them, by not using them regularly the gasoline ended up evaporating and I couldn't use them, so I went to the Bic, Clipper... I would like to use them again with a butane insert, but I have doubts. I'm looking for the normal butane one, with a normal flame, or better a jet type, I don't trust piezoelectric systems much. are they reliable?
When I get home I'll see if I can post a picture
-
Welcome zdec!
I carried a Zippo with the single torch insert for a while.
The piezo ignitions are highly reliable in my experience, though like pretty much anything else they will eventually (rated for 10,000 cycles) wear out and have to be replaced. Note that the Zippo single and double torch inserts have piezo ignitions, while the soft flame insert has a more traditional flint ignition with replaceable flints.
Like most other torch/jet lighters, it isn’t the ignition that usually ends up having problems, it is the gas nozzle/system. This seems to get plugged up or otherwise stop working after a while. It’s one of the reasons I don’t carry one anymore.
The other problem was that I felt like I was having to refill them very frequently. Zippo rates the single torch insert at 100 five-second lights per fill (500 seconds total burn time). I’m not sure I was getting even this out of mine, but I wasn’t actually keeping records. For comparison, the Zippo double torch insert is rated at 60 five-second lights (300 seconds total), and the Zippo soft flame insert is rated at 125 five-second lights (625 seconds total). A full size Bic is rated at 3000 (probably one-second) lights, and independent testing generally puts them at more than 3000 seconds of total burn time.
-
Glad this got bumped again. Next time out the the flea market I'll have to pick up a Zippo and try an insert. The fidget factor is fun thats for sure. I'll use for my grill and candles or whatever around the house. I did like flicking open and close. My partner not so much :ahhh.

Zippo introduced a new soft flame butane insert which seems really nice and uses a flint wheel. Also the Thunderbird soft/yellow flame inserts use a flint wheel.
As compared to the Clipper, I think reliability may be a draw with the soft flame inserts, especially with the new non-round wheels of the Clipper.

Yes, the Zippo yellow flame is newer but the Thunderbird has been around a while.
Zippo also has an electronic ARC insert, but I haven’t tried that one.

I only have the single flame butane insert, didn't feel the need for the 2 flame one  but I have wondered about the electric ones
May have to get the yellow flame butane one though :dd: :like:

A belated birthday gift to me… with $s received.
New to the club!🙄

Discovered subliminal influence in my knife room. My son who collects Zippos since collegeroduc left this above his former bedroom door.

I also found a box in the corner with several other signs, reproduce items I am sure, but still 20 years old.

That is a pretty cool sign LC and can see where it could cause subliminal messaging.

Thank you
I am very selective on majority of my purchases, including these new pretty shining gadgets.
My son gifted me a display case for my sharp and shiny items. I can now display for easy viewing and appreciation.
And actually, having the ability to remind me what I have curbs the impulse to purchase additional items .
-
I'd agree. When things are stored away and unseen the appreciation can be less. Sure, when we stumble upon them the excitement returns but having them out is a daily reminder of the wonderful things we have.
I like to have a play with my collected items from time to time. I can enjoy each time while making sure they are good to go.

Sadly, I have gone off my Zippos.
I found refilling them rather annoying, even though they are great when they are full.
I have now gone over to an electric style of lighter.
its waterproof, reliable, rechargable from any usb port, and seems to have no problems starting my fire starters or any dry swarf.
Sorry guys, technology wins out over looks.
-
No problem! Nice lighter, looks heavy duty.
You are aware Zippo makes a rechargeable insert as well,
https://smkw.com/zippo-rechargeable-insert-purple-plasma
Also, a bit driver insert for screw driver utility.
This besides the standard and butane torch options.
-
Whenever I make it out to the flea market I'll pick up a Zippo then a dual flame insert. In the mean time I use Bic. I do have one of those lighters Valkie and their good :tu:

I've been trying to fill my single torch insert, but it does not want to work. :(
-
I've been trying to fill my single torch insert, but it does not want to work. :(
Couple things to possibly check/try:
- Verify piezoelectric ignition is creating a spark
- Turn the flame adjustment up
- Hit the burner with some compressed air
- Hold the insert upside down and use a small screwdriver or similar tool to depress the fill valve to vent any air that may have accumulated inside the insert. Then refill.
These inserts are refillable, but this doesn’t mean they last forever.
Personally, I found that these inserts were great when they worked, but their finicky nature and the relatively small number of lights per fill ultimately lead me to abandon them and go back to disposable Bics.
