Title: How do you carry your keys?
Post by: MadPlumbarian on April 10, 2016, 01:38:13 AM
So how do you carry your keys and other toys with you all day? What do you think is the best way? The carabiner, leather/nylon strap, or just loose in pocket? I always carried mine on a carabiner and hooked them to a belt loop, only thing was I got tired of hearing them bounce around while walking, so I made this little setup, so everything got strapped tight and nothing made any noise, only thing is I'm getting a little tired of it and it's a little annoying to take them off to use them, so I was just wondering what everyone thinks is the best way of carry?

Crabclaw
Nitecore Tube wrapped in Gorilla tape (mainly to protect it)
Leatherman Micra
Nite Ize Quickey
Philips #2 bit

I added the crab claw for suspension. I have them in my pocket, and clip the crab claw on the pocket. They hang in my pocket, but do not bounce around, and instead of sinking too low in the pocket, they just hang unnoticed.
I prefer the crab claw over a suspension clip because the crab claw retains better. It grabs the pocket securely, and even if my keys hop out of the pocket, they'll still be there.

I also have everything tied up by a steel wire, and the whole setup chained via carabiner/clip to the pocket or the belt loop in the  pants:

That way you have easy access

and avoid rattling/noises

I do this since I can remember, with all my keychain variations/setups

I do not find actual keys pokey at all and carry a light and minichamp with them. No poking for me or I just do not notice it.

Well, I guess that's good in your case, but in mine no, and it sounds like we have the same setup, I got 4 keys, a mini sak, mini flashlight, and a few of those store cards.. But I just can't stand it..

Oh and it's not like my pants are tight, the pockets are loose and have room, so there not pulling or pressing anything against the leg?

Key ring in left front pocket, along with 1) 2xAAA Streamlight Stylus Pro, 2) mini Sharpie and 3) coins, if any, and 4) whatever SAK I might carry that day.

What really bugs me is that the remote to my Chevy Suburban is pretty big, but I can't not carry it.

Do they absolutely have to be on the keyring? Or could you have just the two on a smaller keyring in the bottom of the pocket?

Yeah, that's how I always carried, just all on one. Idk, maybe because I remember my grandfather having one of those like 2" rings with like 20keys and one of those leather straps, and even one of those retractable cable things, idk..

This is one of my old setups, I put holes into the carabiner so it stayed apart rather then just all on one ring, I just need to be able to use only one hand and grab the keys and unlock the door, cause normally I'm holding something in the other, and normally it's always the right hand that full, that and cause the keys are on the left side..

That is right, I carry a full size Spirit, so i don't need SAK, and the flashlight is carried separately.

Good, I'm just opening up for new ideas. I'll add some more thoughts while I'm at it.
First is that your keys seem to be quite 3-dimensional. It's natural with a light and so but it would possibly help with pointiness if you could minimise one of the dimensions. I know those carabiners are awesome but you might take a look at some swiveling solution (like what's used for fishing). With some luck that might help flatten everything.
Second is that it's possible that larger pockets might be a part of the problem. If it allows your keys to move around that could be why the seem to pointy. Whereas a slimmer pocket might keep them in check.

(yes, I might be overanalysing things...)

Hi!
I think you carry a Vic Money Clip, don't you?
How did you attach that ring? By drilling the scales
Thank you in advance!

No to the Vic money clip, I carry a leather i.d. Clip.. What do you mean about the scales? The red military dogtag? That had one hole already, I just drilled another on the other side, then just stitched it on by looping threw the hole and then to the outside, not that to noticeable since I used red thread..
Hope that answered your question in advance, if not ask away.. lol..

Here's my hand-made pouch. Holds 2 keys, a car key, a Utili-key, and a tiny flashlight. But I could have sized it to hold almost anything. I made one for a friend recently that held 3 car keys( Biggies, each with remote), and three house keys. That rides in a purse.
Everything rides very comfortably, and zero noise. The "Tail" passes through the rear of the pouch, and attaches to one of the key-rings, so nothing gets lost and there's no need to disassemble anything during use.

My darn keys and the darn keyring is a myth I´m still trying to solve.

I carry mine on a carbine. With splint rings and a Vic Minichamp or Classic or Micra etc.

I was thinking about a WunderKey. But way too expensive for my taste.

It rattles like hell - so I just put them into the bag during the day. As I use access key card at work to open doors and such, it is ok for me.

Sorry for bad pic. But, it's the KeySmart. And I like it much better than a loose key ring. I recommend it, and it's a fraction of the cost vs. the keybar (slimmer and lighter too)

I've got 3 sets of keys for various roles, all loaded pretty much the same - hanging off small clips (image is the closest I could find online with a quick search) that can clip to belt loop, lanyard, or wherever else required at any point in time.

Works well enough.

This is my "daily" keychain rig. It is all mounted on swivels. The keys are wrapped tightly in a leather holder, which; does not make a peep or poke into my leg. It is minimal but has room for added stuff like a keychain flashlight or whatever the occasion dictates. And it is SWISS :)

(NOTE): not advertising for Mr lock, jist the picture.
The great thing is they lay flat in the pocket no matter how many keys & doodads.  I was using a dangler to keep them off the bottom of my pocket (run through the little split ring), but didn't like the way it hung. YMMV.

Mine are on a clone of the LM carabiner which I attach to an Uncle Mike's Maglite/Baton ring for a police duty belt.
The ring is large enough to still fitt a Maglite even with the keys. A hair or ranger band keeps them quiet when needed and tucks in the molle on the back of my cell holster when not. There is enough length I can tuck in my pocket or leave to dangle.

This is an interesting thread. Over her here in France and several european countries, men wear those small ´handbags' where everything goes in it. Like this :

My wife being from the UK hates those things but In summertime i'm having a hard time finding an alternative. I got the keys, the wallet, the cigs, the zippo, the SAK... And I hate feeling too manu things in my pockets. I'm not  gonna wear a jacket just to have pockets...

So i might steal some of your ideas

This is my "daily" keychain rig. It is all mounted on swivels. The keys are wrapped tightly in a leather holder, which; does not make a peep or poke into my leg. It is minimal but has room for added stuff like a keychain flashlight or whatever the occasion dictates. And it is SWISS :)
I'm really liking this contraption!

The sling is detachable with the buckle, and there is a second buckle at the lowerside of the sling for added stability.
Inside is completely custumizable by velcro edged dividers.

I switched things up, guess we'll see how it works? I got the idea from that one I posted in the top corner, but it's only one hook and if the bottom popped it would fall down, yet it looks as if there is a slot for a belt so if you want to absolutely make sure, well then, but I don't really want to take my belt off everytime in order to hang up my keys.

So, here's a few pics as I worked on it and then completed it, the hooks I got from an old crappy messenger bag shoulder strap, I had to snap off the piece that held the strap then file it down. I kinda like it, but it's not a 100% it stays on, I've always just used a carabiner, so idk, I mean if seriously pulls it's only snaps, I might have to do something to make it more safe.. thoughts on it?

I used to have a small Vic classic SD multi on my keychain. It has 3 tools I used often: scissors, knife, and tweezers. Then I lost it at the airport (thanks, TSA!). I had the Leatherman carabiner for a while, as I wanted something besides keys. Replacing the carabiner was a PS4. The PS4 provides what the Vic did, minus the tweezers, with the additions of the pliers, and screw drivers. I do not see the need of the pliers. The PS4 is also a bit heavy for my liking. I may want to get another SD..

I must say this new little setup is pretty good, it's taking a little to get used to because it doesn't hang down like what I used to have, so as I reach down to grab them they ain't there? There just up higher, but the real nice thing is one hand unclip or clip on is soooo much easier!

I think after rearranging my keychain so many times I just have to accept I will always have 2 keychains unless I want a heavy bulky rattling bunch of keys hanging from my belt.  Now I carry one set in my pocket while my vehicle key and fob are on my Victorinox belt hanger for ease of accessibility.

Have been experimenting with set ups, tried the nite-ize plastic s-biner#2 but felt it was too small especially if you have a few or many pounds on your belly, hard to get on and off belt loop with fat stomach in the way

Now I went up to the #3 s biner, but am getting worried split ring will fish its way off by itself. so i'm contemplating the locking version, and new jeans, this is very important cause I have had belt loops break and they are tough to sew back on since they are very thick denim.

In the meantime I added a small nylon hanger to the sbiner that has loops for split ring, seems ok, but is adding too much length to set up. Not sure there is ever an end to this key config thing.

That they do and it hurts to attempt to stitch them by hand! That's why I fig it would be good for something to go around the belt itself rather then a loop. Only thing that sucks is your sooo used to where the loop is, so by going with something that goes around the belt it's either too far forward or too far back! Kinda like getting new jeans or a new sheath, something just doesn't feel right on location..

I stopped having my key dangle from my belt loops as well.  Seems like a bad idea IMO and one can "easily" attach them to a belt or pocket or waist band.

I love the Victorinox belt hanger.  I dislike the keys I carry.

I thought of getting one of those, but for the sak instead.. put the sak in the sheath then hook up the belt clip with a small chain, long enough to take the sak out, but not so it's dangling. This way if the sak(the Pharmber) ever came out of the sheath it wouldn't go anywhere without me knowing! That and I guess it would look good, no?

Using this set up with nite ize #3 s biner, added a small zip tie to one of the gates which locks it closed,
Vic classic and 47's mini and a few swivel lobster clasps to easily remove them from split ring. was gonna replace the S biner with the locking version, but the zip tie works well. I didnt like the split ring directly on the s biner cause the keys would pass through it from time to time and if you use the light some times keys jut out and its awkward, so I added the  black nylon hanger. working pretty well, but still not perfect.

JR

I guess you can call me a little over protective?

Its a great idea.  I fashioned a chain that did what you are describing but abandoned it.  I may try that again actually.  I really like the Victoriniox belt thing it looks great and the shield  :tu:.

Titanium pocket widgy bar, victorinox manager, car keys (don't have it in pic), dorm keys, handcuff keys because why not, and a cheapo USB drive I can take off and give to someone and not think about it. The rest of my tool needs are covered by my phone, swisstool, and flashlight. using the pocket widgy as a lanyard

I removed the serrated blade on my Leatherman Wave and and went to make a new key and then modded it to fit where the blade use to be. So my homekey has a liner lock (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161229/18baa5df7883246c00a5f9b36f34a6e5.jpg)

My house has a keypad and doesnt need a metal key and i leave my vehicle keys in my coat pocket.
But my work keys are attached to some wound parchute cord (ya never know?)
This extends it so when i clip it onto my belt loop on my pants it fits deeper into my pocket and i dont sound like a jail guard walking down the halls.
Also its long enough for me to unlock doors and swipe the nfc fob without unclipping it.

It worked pretty good, but zip tie seemed to loosen its grasp after a few weeks, so I caved and got the #3 S Biner with the slide locks, needed some button cells for my vics and battery junction was only place I could find the locking sbiner #3 and batteries for swisscard lite & midnight mini champ. seems to lock up nicely and better than my rigged version.

thats a good idea. I kinda like this locking S Biner, its black version. now that I got a battery for midnight mini champ I remember why I didn't care when old one died..the red LED is so weak, its almost useless, but I will probably put it back on keychain rotation anyway in place of the classic, its a really cool tool but the light is lacking

I had one of those but have no clue where it disappeared to, and yeah like no light! But still so cool! I ended up getting a nitecore tube, that throws freaking light and it's the old one, along with a alox classic..

It can carry upto 12 keys and also a ring for larger or extra keys. No more jingling sounds.

interesting idea, but perhaps before you post any links to your site we should discuss advertising options at grant@multitool.org so folks don't think you are just here to promote yourself and not give something back to this awesome community.

for personal use.. i dont really carry keys anymore. just a key fob for my truck in my pocket.
my house has a keypad lock so no key necessary.
for work i have refined it down to the necessities over the past many years and i'm into anything brass lately so i put together a simple paracord lanyard with brass belt hook etc.
it lets the keys sit low in my pock, just above the bottom and i can whip them out quick or even use a key without taking it off my belt.
