So recently, Douglas and I have planned on doing a Schrade Tough Tool challenge in February. This should be a cool challenge, as it is a tool very few of us would use on a daily basis. The challenge rules are the normal ones. Post a photo of a Tough Tool everyday and try to post action shots when possible. Both U.S.A and China made Tough Tools are welcomed. MT.o offers three different badges for off-brand tools. Those are; 7-day, 15-day, and 30-day badges for off-brand tools. :D
The Tough Tool is a unique/innovative design and should still prove to be useful in everyday carry. The Taylor brands version is notably inferior, but much cheaper/easier to acquire. :woohoo:
There are options galore! China or U.S.A Tough Tools and three options for participation duration. The U.S versions include ST1 and ST5E, while the Taylor version is an ST1 as well . :multi:

I'm not sure if it's the only sheath with this feature, but I remember it being listed as one of it's abilities on the sheet that came with it, I have the sheet somewhere, I'll try to lay my hands on it for the challenge

To be honest, there are many MTs, from other popular manufacturers, that are way worse. I've carried a TT for a couple of weeks before and rather enjoyed it. But, that said, it takes some acclimation. :ahhh

It's the only multitool I've owned so I can't compare, but it sure has and continues to serve me well, roughly 22 years now.

Noticed that too. Used to be, even well used ones were fetching $30-40. I got mine last year, with the leather sheath even for $15. Only problem was that the blade and tiny screwdriver tips were slightly bent, and spray paint spatter was on the sheath. Interesting that every one this same guy is selling on eBay at the moment are $30 in WORSE shape. I think in part I got mine cheap because this guy semi-mistakenly listed it with the Taylor Chinese made Tough Tools; in fact it was the only USA one out of the several he had to choose from; the "leather sheath" option was what gave it away.

The sheath is worth that! The driver tips are commonplace.
Most of the ToughTools I see have slightly twisted small flat drivers, because of how thin they are ground. The U.S.A TT I'll be using for the challenge has the thinner flat drivers ground down a bit to make them a bit thicker/stronger. :)

Alright gentlemen, it won't be long now until the Tough Tool challenge. Remember there are three levels of Off-Brand badges. 7-Day, 15-Day, and 30-Day. So please get out those ToughTools, dust them off, oil em' up, and join us for a special challenge with the unique Schrade multitool called the ToughTool! :)

I'm ready, I can date the tool because it was a gift the Christmas after we moved into our house.
And to take it further, until this past year it was paired with a Recruit that predates it by a couple of years, the Recruits been retired for a rotation of Saks that add scissors and a saw :tu:

That will be a good set up, after the Swisschamp Challenge I'll probably be carrying the Fieldmaster for at least February, I'm guessing we can pair the Tough Tool then? :cheers:

I could probably go without pairing the ST1, but I've always carried an MT, SAK, and light. And, to boot, the blade is really the only thing I really really really dislike on the TT. Will try to use it as a main blade for the challenge, but having a better knife(sak for example) may be needed for extended use during the course. :ahhh

I'll be pairing mine with a Spirit XBS but will only break out the Spirit when the TT fails. This will be an intersting challenge for me. I've never done anything more than play aroound with the TT :facepalm:, so 30 days of "ONLY" TT's unique design will be totaly new to me. :tu:

Sounds good to me, because I always have a backup MT as well(usually a Pinchy in my back pocket) just in case something goes wrong with the main tool.
I really like these "uncommon tool" challenges quite a lot. It is one thing to do a 30-day with a tool you are familiar with, but it is a whole different ball game with something unfamiliar. :cheers:

Doing both at the same time would be ideal, and cool because I'm going to switch to a vintage Schrade fixed blade for that challenge, I think the rules say no though :cheers:

to do two challenges at the same time :think:

I am stoked for this challenge. Not a lot of us are in it, but we'll make this one hell of a challenge, because only the hardest Tough guys will sport the ToughTool. :woohoo:
I am also quite curious to see how the USA version compares to the Chinese Taylor tool(will be switching between the two periodically). I have an idea, but we'll see. :D

I was just about to make a U-turn back to get. The implements are great for hacking. Large and thick at the tang that can fit both LM and Gerber. U saved it. That someone. :tu:

Come to think of it, I have a TT that seems to be US made but the pliers does not have the 2 outer sheets riveted and appears to a single cast. The "rivets" are there but for looks only.. I dun know much about the history for Schrade, but this particular one seems a little odd to me. I bought it cheap for parts as one side of the pliers are broken..

That is the last U.S version and the tooling that Taylor acquired for casting the pliers from what I have read. On the MT wiki, it shows the versions and there is a solid cast pliers version with rivets and U.S markings.
Edit: oops. that is the next to the last pliers version. Last U.S. version didn't have phony pliers rivets.

:salute: that is a rather brave choice of TT version for this challenge... I have the same one that came with tools that are not so pleasant.. What is suppose to be sharp are apparently not.. And the black paint makes everything slippery... :salute: :salute: would really like to see how this version holds up in this challenge!

Thanks GLBM, I rarely use the main blade except for very fine or delicate stuff, it's just not very stout, the large serrated blade on the other hand is a beast, I've even used it as an improvised saw more than a few times in addition to everyday knife duties :cheers:

Gregg mine has serations too, they are very differant though. I'm certain a use will arise where I can show them off.

I also noticed the cutters aren't good at cutting today when I was wiring those lamps. It isn't from being a sloppy jaw, but the wire slips into the bolt section if you're not holding it towards the back. It really needs a catch notch and hard wire groove like Vic and LM use. :ahhh

Cutting light cardstock
Anybody who has seen a 30d of mine knows this is a daily task for me.
The blade didnt want to start but once it did it pulled through with light fethering of the cut edge. As you can see by the fuzz and that lint ball there are some dull spots in the factory edge
Though truth be told this stuff is so fibrous even the best blades have trouble cutting it cleanly.

How does this tool compare size wise to a PST?
Barry, others might be able to help, crazy but the Tough Tool is the only plier based multitool I've owned, paired with a SAK I've never felt like I was missing out :dunno:

Douglas and glbm, I've never found the short length of the cutters very good for large diameter wiring even though you can nip your way through it, I suspect that would be the same for any MT because of the cutters short lengh, lighter gauge automotive wiring is a different story, also great for cotter pins, coat hangers and snare wire

Cutting light cardstock
Anybody who has seen a 30d of mine knows this is a daily task for me.
The blade didnt want to start but once it did it pulled through with light fethering of the cut edge. As you can see by the fuzz and that lint ball there are some dull spots in the factory edge
Though truth be told this stuff is so fibrous even the best blades have trouble cutting it cleanly.

Thank you for the info on the blade. The blade on my user TT has been sharpened, so my use of it wouldn't indicate the factory edge.

You're quite right. I was able to cut up a coat hanger like it was butter and it still cut 18g stranded wire without an issue. Just have to nip through large stuff like you said. And also pull the wire to the back of the cutters before squeezing. If they had put a hard wire notch in there, it would have been much easier to cut wire. Victorinox has a second notch in their small cutters that stops the wire being cut from slipping away as well. :)
I may file a hard wire notch into my cutter, but they work well enough to complete the challenge. :cheers:

That is an interesting tool. I believe it is listed as a "scribe". But, it makes quick work of blister packs. The same tool on the Taylor version is only good for poking a router's reset button. :ahhh

My only two complaints about the antiquated ToughTool are(and I am not to upset, because it is a vintage design that was a winner back in its' prime):
1. Cutters need a hard wire notch to hold wire better.
2. Needs a medium flat blade driver. It only has a large and tiny driver. Need something for common flat driver screws. :ahhh

Day 1: Really, the Tough Tool wasn't that big of a changeup, given my two primary MTs these days are it and the Wave. Kept it with me, but didn't carry it much--sweatpants and HD MTs don't mix.
Tools used, scraper to remove the bark on the stick used to hold the feed box for the sheep shut (which broke), and blade to sharpen the tip (that way, it goes in easier). I've never sharpened the blade in this Tough Tool, but it still is decently sharp. Did not have a knife on me early this morning as I went out. Would also have made a new feed box stick with the saw had I found a limb of proper diameter; but I didn't until way later in the day.

Then, the big screwdriver to adjust the pivot of my Clauss electrician scissors. They were dragging a bit; probably a burr somewhere I can't see. I always like for my scissors to have a screw holding the halves together as I'm constantly adjusting them; seems few make them that way anymore.

The ST1 was used for all versions and is even used for the Chinese made version. :)

Big fan of screw pivots on pliers as well. All scissors should have it. Even the old SAKs have screw pivots. Newer ones don't though. :ahhh

Day 2:
The phillips driver is really good on the ToughTool and the handles fold out for a good reach. The notching in the driver tip make it grip like an alligator. Hats off to the 1990s Schrade engineers for the odd looking phillips that bites. :tu:
Uses to finish putting an "L bracket" up for a shelf in my workroom. Shelf is for spare antique sewing machine and telephone parts. :)

The plier jaws are unique, in that they seem to "reach"(for lack of a better word) better than other tools. I guess the handle shape, that aggressively slims closer to the pliers, creates a longer feel with the long handles. Used the TT to fix my boss's trim in his truck cab. Good jaw teeth fantastic grip transfer. But, we already knew, the pliers were the TT's shining glory.

Shows how far out of the loop I am on plier based multitools, I'm not a collecter and the ST1 has served me so well I've never looked at changing :dunno:

When you open the handles to use the pliers do the handles lock in place so they don’t flop about when you use them :think:

Yes, they snap into position. But, and unfortunately l, that only applies for the US models. The Taylor version doesn't snap into place. Lots of time manually spreading. :ahhh

I also used the pliers to pull a nail, but the camera was dead.
Accidentally turned on the vacuum cleaner, with the brush catching and winding up the line I was tying the dust collector shut with. Oops! So, ST-1 large screwdriver to unlatch the coin-slot screws that hold the cover on, and Benchmade 8 to remove the line.
At $10 from most surplus outlets, the Benchmade 7 and 8 hooks are seriously good value for the money. I have one of each; with the 7 for belt carry, 8 on my pack in an Ontario strap cutter pouch (the Benchmade one is OK, but you have to use an included adapter to get it to affix to MOLLE, while the Ontario is MOLLE; and the cutter itself is crap; dull as a butter knife)

The pliers are definitely the best feature so far with the ToughTool. The only tool with less splay might be a blunt nose Gerber MP600.
Looking at the Taylor version, which I will be carrying at some point, there was so much that could have been done to make a new version way better(larger cutters, added medium driver and thinner profile). But, instead, Taylor just ruined the original design. :facepalm:

The more I use the pliers, the more I think Schrade had something special. It is a shame that they never sought to make any notable improvements, like added medium flat driver/something more useful than a little ruler with a notch(they say hook remover, but it doesn't lock and would not be any good as a hook remover, because of that). The "scribe awl" could have been swapped for something else as well.
Taylor brands had a great platform to make a standout tool, but opted to ruin the ToughTool name for the sake of a cheap cash-grab. Half of the information online talks about how awful the ToughTools are, but they are reviewing the Taylor version. :facepalm:

Since I had both work to do, and was running some errands today, I put my jeans on today, and the excellent leather sheath on my belt (in the horizontal position). I got quite a bit done with the unseasonably warm weather (65 degrees Fahrenheit). I cut some large decorative grass with the gas hedge trimmer and worked on some power equipment. Garden tractor needs a battery--one in it is the original, which is 20 years old and is constantly in need of charging or jumping. Tires are dry-rotted too; and barely hold air without Fix-A-Flat or Slime being put in regularly. These will be fixed soon, hopefully. I can do most of it myself, minus putting the tires on; it will be serviced in the Spring at the dealer (as is usually done annually), but am trying to save my folks some cash.
Pliers: Removed stripped out screw on chicken coop door, bent rake tines back straight, and removed oil plug on tiller.
Phillips: installed Phillips screw on chicken coop.
File: Filed away childproof tabs on Listerine cap.

Phillips: installed Phillips screw on chicken coop.
File: Filed away childproof tabs on Listerine cap.

I wonder, as well as the TT is made, why they introduced the model with a can opener that was inferior to the rest of its' tool load-out. :think:
On the plus side, it appears only the very first version and the newest Chinese Taylor tools have awful/dull can openers.

My can opener not only isnt sharp it's practically rounded. Many of my tools suffer from this. The black coat covers all surfaces and edges (even on the combo blade)
I may take some files or the worksharp to clean & square this thing up, but will use it as-is for as long as possable.

Edit: yes. The original TT's "scribe/awl" is supposed to have a flat tip.m for some strange reason. It isn't broken. Schrade got carried away with the tool count and claimed 21 tools. As Greg posted the manual on page 5. https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80263.msg1866064.html#msg1866064

I did check my ST5E(slip joint pliers ToughTool with bit driver), which is the original Craftsman marked version, and it has the the dull V-grind can opener like yours. The later Schrade marked ST5E tools have the updated can opener. So apparently, Schrade used that opener on their really early tools. I'll take a photo of it this evening. :)

As odd as the Scribe/Awl is it has seen use, the flat tip is deceiving, at least on mine it comes to a nice sharp point that will stick you :facepalm:

The serrated blade is a wonder, I compare it to the knives you see advertised on late night TV, the ones that can cut a tomato, then a rope, then a leather belt, a tin can and back to a tomato, well this edge can and does, it's never been sharpened, and it's never dulled :tu:
The flattened Phillips has a very nice bite that won't walk out of a screw no matter how tight :tu:
I like the ruler because it's marked in 16ths on the standard scale, and mms on the metric, if I'm measuring with a small scale I'm likely after a closer measurement :tu:
The rest is pretty standard stuff, no real complaints, but I have nothing to compare it with :dunno:
But in the end the Pliers are the star :tu:

They are usably sharp but they have little bit of play in the pivot that keeps them from bieng 100% reliable.
A light tap on the pivot rivet woth a punch to tighten it should be enough to solve the slop. Though I am not sure it is really a priority/ necessary unless you like tight scissors.
But they do cut better than most off brands.

I have to agree on the points, except for the SE blade, and only because mine doesn't have it. I think the measure tool slot would have been better as something else, but the ruler is very good for a short MT fold out precision measure. :like:
I love the Phillips on the TT. As you said, it doesn't seem to want to unmount the screw once it is in. :D

Been considering buying another to mod Navitool scissors into, but unfortunately, the tool is too long, and the pivot is larger diameter than the ST-1. But during the past few days, I've had a Minichamp for scissors, and today, I had a Cybertool on my desk for them; as I was running zip ties to tame the rat's nest of cables for the computer and related peripherals.

The US ToughTool never included scissors, so you're not missing out as far as the ToughTool is concerned. Noa is braving the challenge with the Taylor version of the tool with black finish. :o

Phillips screwdriver: loosened up the VGA cable for the PC monitor. Originally tried it with the slotted, but the Phillips grips better.

Used the file to clean up a small horn for a wood pipe that fell off. Cleaned the pipe side as well. Used some glue to attach. Filled any holes in the horn with a filler stick.

First was opening up some mail--turns out in my final semester of college (finished in Dec. (though technically graduated in May; as I forgot to apply for graduation until November) with a BS in management through the local college online I was on the President's List. So, I got a BS in BS.
Secondly, I removed the zip-ties on this model tractor I picked up at Tractor Supply today; since I already had it out thinking the cutters would work. Really wish Ertl had stuck with wires. Guess the zip-ties were cheaper.

Of course it worked. I'm always using my multi-tools to drag stuff up places I can't get to.
Int his case I just pushed the pliers into the cardboard to drag it off.
But there is another way.
Ialway figured that was why the saw and the file where in opposite handles(joking). Just spread the handles in opposite directions and then extend the saw and file.
Hold on to the file and try to hook the package with the teeth of the saw.
On most full-size multi tools that'll give you anywhere from 8-12 in of extra reach
Just don't drop and break whatever it is you're trying to get.

I must agree with the pocket statement. I've been carrying mine in my back left pocket since we started, with tool side facing away from my butt, and it hasn't been an issue. :)

Today I came to a realization. The ToughTool is a pretty smooth operating tool. That is quite a thing considering the time it was released in 1996. It wouldn't be until the following year a smoother operating tool would be released, which was the SwissTool. The ToughTool does have an advantage over some of the best tools of the time. The implements are notably easier to access than any other tool of the era. No fingernails? Bump the other side with your hand and the tools ease out a bit. Then, even with gloves on, you can extend the tool you need further and tuck the rest back into the handles.
Not the most refined thing I've experienced with a multi tool, but something I felt like rambling about. :)

Unwrapping some lag bolts and screws to resemble furniture.

Today's only real use was using the scribe/awl widening a hole in the wall to fit a wall hook\mount for the vacuum trying to fit the included anchors. Which didn't work; so I moved up about an inch and using the "egg-beater" Miller's Falls drilled the first hole with a smaller bit, just smaller than the screw itself. Then switched to the electric 5/8 Hitachi to put in the screws. Surprisingly, it holds on strong without the anchors.

I've really got to get a cordless drill and/or driver of my own. The Millers Falls is "cordless" but sometimes, muscle power alone isn't enough for some materials; or driving screws. Luckily, Lowe's selling off the display models for near nothing is just one month around the corner. That's how I got the Hitachi last year; which was $70 for under $30. Just make sure to ask the associate in tools to look for the packaging, which contains all accessories (in my case, the chuck key and an additional pistol grip/depth gauge (two total; when it normally only comes with one), which I don't often use), manuals, and the case. While sold as-is-and tool only, they almost always have the packaging for the tool in the storage above the tool displays and will get it for you if you ask.

The spring clip on my 3blade Barlow money clip worked its way loose and popped off. I use the screwdriver to hold it open and get back into position.
My money clip is back in action.
( sorry I didn't think to take a picture while it was still in two pieces)

Mostly just along for the ride. To bad it's 30 minutes through the mountain pass and 6 hours flat dry desert the rest of the way.

Didn't use a thing on it; These sweatpants don't have pockets, and thus the only pocket I had was the chest pocket on my T-Shirt; and thus I had to carry something light, a Vic Bantam. I only used each tool once there; the blade to cut a zip tie; and the can opener on a rather large can of green beans because it was what was handy. Would have used the Tough Tool if I'd not forgotten that it was in the same place where I took the photo yesterday.
Today, I started a restoration project on my great-grandfather's old coon hunting light, a 1930s Just-Rite carbide miner's cap light. Some of the missing pieces are ridiculously expensive for what they are (we're talking $20-30 for tiny pieces); so it will likely be a cosmetic only restoration. I've already replaced one seal with an o-ring and the felts that go in a part of it I can make. I'll probably just clean out the calcium buildup from the inside and polish the brass. The body looks banged up and to the point it probably won't hold gas.

Really like that old Miners lamp as well, Cody :o I know that coon hunters still used these up into the late 80's before starting to use battery lights around here :cheers:
My Granny use to tell me how they made fire works for the 4th of July out of carbide when she was young :ahhh I am sure they got quite a boom out of them :o :D Coal mining use to be big business around here but that has all died out and all the mines shut down :-\ last ones I remember shut down in the 80's as well :-[ Great to see that the light is in such great looking shape even if it isn't gonna be made to work again because of the expense :salute: :like:

Ok it is not a tool fail, just a bad impliment.
Remember the pic of my blunt, painted/coated can opener...it doesnt work.
Turns out the shoulder on the tang doesnt sit properly against the locking tab. This cause the tab to shift above the spine of the can opener and flex backwards.

First thing was reattaching the dog-tag type chain on my Craftsman keychain screwdriver. Then using the large screwdriver to remove two switch plate covers to prepare the wall behind them for painting, then after the paint dried to put them back on. I also tightened another my grandmother had removed and replaced; but had left it a bit loose. Scraper removed some paint buildup on the plastic covers, and the scribe opened up the bubble mailer to my new LM bit kit.

This put my TT out of commission for over a year. That back spring popped back like that and stayed, had no retention on any of the tools in that handle. Had to drill out the rivet bend it back and put a new bolt to hold the tools in the handle.

Put a new alternator in my brother's Explorer today. TT was used for disconnecting/reconnecting the battery cables.

This is the weak link on this tool. This happened to my early version of TT, I was able to bend it back before I sold it. They redesigned it in later models by adding some extra bends in it to strengthen it.

I finally decided it was time I gave the can opener a try on my TT
With out the stong back spring of a Vic or lock of other MT's it took a little adjusting but that was easy enough.

Then as the process was under way it seamed to be the "cleanest cut of ANY can opener i have ever used.

As I finnised up I came to realize that the TT can opener combined with the pull tab can top created a very interesting effect.

Had to do a bit of surgery on a dog toy to cut away a dammaged section and re-tie whats left into a "tail".

Did some cutting with the blade, including opening a secondhand SwissChamp. It's in decent shape, but the saw is bent, which means off to Connecticut ASAP. Oh well, bent saws are a common problem; and I have actually bent saws on two different SAKs that will be sent off with the Champ.

Perhaps this thread will help venerate the US ToughTool can opener. I still beed to try mine out to see if I can duplicate Douglas' results, but since I have personally held that TT he has, I know the one I'm using have the same can opener. Those ToughTools are a bear to clean and maintain. So you get real familiar with them during a spa treatment. :ahhh
I wonder if you'd have better luck using a metal file to make a chisel grind on your can opener to get it performing with the later US versions? Same goes for the Taylor version, granted it doesn't completely fail like the issue Noa experienced. :ahhh

Very cool! I hope the SAK saw can be fixed. I've had some luck in the past with bending SAK saws, but I don't know if I'd trust a saw after it has been malformed and straightened. :ahhh

I think the plier head is made of laminated kryptonite or something, because I've done some stuff that I knew would leave teeth dented with it and nothing happened. :dunno:

Those little cutters just love chomping up stuff like chain and coat hangers. The long handles make it a joy to do the cutting. :)
The Taylor version cutters actually do work very well for cutting as well. I got bored one night and chopped up a bunch of 55lb jack chain with the US amd Taylor versions.

Tools used; blade opening the feed for the sheep we bought today and pliers for twisting wire to repair the busted hay feeder (bale spear hung on it a couple weeks back; tearing off the piece that holds it in on the other side). Eventually, it needs to be welded back on.
Along with my Tomica towing and recovery equipment; the old (1970s-1980s) Peterbilt 359/Holmes 750 "American Wrecker" (and a good choice, as the 750 remains popular with many towing companies to this date) and the Hino Profia/Century 1040SDU modeled after a unit used by the Yokohama Municipal Fire Bureau's Super Rangers Urban Search and Rescue team.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the tool. Today I'd rather talk about the sheath.
The Taylor version of the Tough Tool comes with a very nice sheath that I honestly question if it isn't worth more than the tool itself. Seriously for a $15 tool this is probably a 10 to $15 sheath if you were to buy it separately retail.( not counting deals & steals of course)
Tools at this sub 20$ price point generally come with either the thinnest nylon possible or nothing at all.
Thick padded condura; a molded belt clip that's held in with a rivet yet still has a little bit of movement to make it comfortable to wear; as well as a belt loop underneath the clip all make this a pretty decent sheath. An added bonus given that the tough tool is a full size tool the sheath is large enough to hold almost any other multi-tool.

Didn't do much, only thing I did was using the scraper to remove some congealed toothpaste I couldn't remove from the cap light restoration project.
Decided to give the Remington a break, and carried something similar, the Noble Outfitters Hunter. Probably the only Chinese knife not made by Rough Rider that I can honestly say I like. I've been wanting one since its partially serrated cousin, the Viper came out years ago in the various equine catalogs. Seems to be a very well made knife, especially from a clothing company; and in many cases, with those, you're paying for the brand (I'm looking at you Eddie Bauer!). Lately, it's been a work knife clipped to my coat.

I have to agree on the sheath. I wore mine for a while last year and it never started sagging and the Velcro stayed firm the whole time. :)

Today was another more or less lazy day. Didn't use a tool on it. While I was carrying a USA Old Timer 3OT "Bearhead" lockback, my only cutting task, peeling oranges, was done with the 2014 Case Carhartt Wharncliffe Mini Trapper. And might I add, the 3OT is my only stainless Old Timer. While some early 5OTs and I want to say 7OTs were initially offered in carbon steel, they quickly switched to stainless. The 3OT was a pretty poor seller, whcih is why they aren't seen often, especially compared to 34OTs or 8OTs for example.
I really need to get more of Schrade's more tactical/modern offerings that were made in the USA. I've only got a Cliphanger CH-3 Silhouette with a whistle attached clipped to the sternum strap of my pack and that's it as far as non-traditional USA Schrades go.

Used the TT a lot today, but the photo is of me clipping the tip on a new glue bottle. I went through a half bottle getting the base glued back up on the sideboard. I put sanded is down and pit on new veneer as well, but the TT wasn't required for that.

The Taylor TTs don't have loctite in the screws. You'll need to remove the screw and put some loctite in there. :)
The older TTs use strong rivets, but loosen as well. I just smack the rivets with a 2.5lb hammer on the vise. :D

I mostly use this German-made Skedco Warfighter Extreme Medicine (Eickhorn PRT-IV); which opens really quick and a joy to use with gloves on. I just wish the regular PRTs were cheaper--these for a long time were $30 through many people dealing in military surplus (they were issued to combat medics in a rigging kit for MEDEVAC helicopters); while the standard PRT is $120. It also has a seatbelt cutter (cutting twine and opening clam pack, I've just about wore out the section of snap-off blade that forms the tool; and I don't know what type Eickhorn used; guessing OLFA) and a carbide glass breaker.
Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the spectrum of folder size, I chose the rare (as a USA model) USA Old Timer 106OT "Granddad's Old Timer" to supplement the TT; since the USA model never had scissors. Due to its rarity, I've used it as a shelf queen, not ever carried or used it. That had to change. So I cleaned it, sharpened it, and lubed it and started carrying it tonight.
Today's only use didn't come until just now, after taking today's photo. I used the scribe to peel an orange--it worked great!

I just whack the rivet with a heavy hammer on the vise, starting softly and hitting a bit harder until the pivot feels good. Just don't miss the rivet. :ahhh

Indeed the rescue knives are well rounded in use. The Skedco looks quite nice!
I have two versions of the Italian made Remington Rescue folders. The one I carried today with just the blade and a pocket clip is much lighter than the other one. The other one has the same blade, but adds another layer; being a spring loaded and locking strap cutter. That version has no pocket clip or mount, so it is sheath only. Both have the glass breakers. :)

That second one is callendar bound G-Man.
:like: While I normally don't like larger folders (the exception being Folding Hunters); I've always had a thing for big folding rescue knives. I mostly use this German-made Skedco Warfighter Extreme Medicine (Eickhorn PRT-IV); which opens really quick and a joy to use with gloves on. I just wish the regular PRTs were cheaper--these for a long time were $30 through many people dealing in military surplus (they were issued to combat medics in a rigging kit for MEDEVAC helicopters); while the standard PRT is $120. It also has a seatbelt cutter (cutting twine and opening clam pack, I've just about wore out the section of snap-off blade that forms the tool; and I don't know what type Eickhorn used; guessing OLFA) and a carbide glass breaker.
Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the spectrum of folder size, I chose the rare (as a USA model) USA Old Timer 106OT "Granddad's Old Timer" to supplement the TT; since the USA model never had scissors. Due to its rarity, I've used it as a shelf queen, not ever carried or used it. That had to change. So I cleaned it, sharpened it, and lubed it and started carrying it tonight.
Today's only use didn't come until just now, after taking today's photo. I used the scribe to peel an orange--it worked great!

Peeling oranges again with the scribe was today's use as well.
Here's my Tough Tool with a junker Craftsman 45471 Professsional Multitool; what would become the ST-5E Tough Tool. Think I paid $15 for it, basically everything but the pliers, file, bit driver, and saw are wrecked. . At the time, they were going for $120-something in great shape. I've sourced the entire right handle (with blade, file, chisel, scraper, and can opener, just waiting to see if the seller has any Craftsman-stamped versions. So far, that only leaves pivots (still trying to find something that fits, I'll have to tear down the old junker ST-1 I had a long time before the one I am carrying in the challenge to get measurements) and a scribe awl (have not seen that particular tool as leftover from Ellenville).

When I bought the ST5E from ChopperCharles, he had outfitted the bit holder with a cut off(shortened) bit holder from a multi-driver, as you mention as a possibility. It works well enough and looks stock.
I sure hope you can get the TT to the point you want it. I personally ruined one USA version and one Taylor version trying to merge the two(the US TT had a bad pliers head). :facepalm:

You can use a vacuum to suck a strong string through and tie the wire on it and fish it through. Small beaded chain(like bathtub drain chain) works even better for 3/8" lamp tube(the small chain can be shaken through the assembly, bypassing edges with the shaking).

I've been carrying the MiniChamp since FolderBeholder sent it to me earlier this month in advance of March's Minichamp Madness; more or less the entire Tough Tool challenge. Used the two blades and scissors the most, along with the "cut and picker" blade for opening clam pack. I use this keychain clip, which came off a Stadlbauer Nintendo Classics LCD game to secure it to the belt loop of my jeans while it's riding in the watch pocket. I wish I knew what these things actually were so that I could find a place I could buy those same clips in bulk so I could affix one to all my 58mm and 74mm SAKs, as well as 65mm Wengers. They work great for the job, and don't seem flimsy at all. Did misplace the tweezers today somehow. Thinking they are in the car. Oh well, I've got tons of Classics I can borrow one from until I can buy a few (dozen; at the rate I lose them).
Today's Tough Tool use was the scraper trying to make the top half of the side barn door open better.

Nothing again today; although I did test the cutters on a piece of CAT-5E cable that made up an old Ethernet cable that no longer worked; it didn't cut it too cleanly; but then again, hardly anything but actual cutters struggles to cut it.
I put some stuff in the closet, and decided to photograph it with the 1980s Camillus USA MKII "Kabar" that typically resides on my pack in the Kabar polymer sheath (I still have the orignal leather one, except the original owner of this knife had sharpened the swedge, and it was causing the blade to start wearing through the leather). It's not a very practical blade for general use (the 3.5" blade on the average Mora is more practical for that), but for heavy jobs, I can't say there's a better knife. I didn't mean to buy it. I was looking for a reasonably sized hunting knife with a leather washer handle. I saw this one for $25, made an offer for $20; and the seller agreed. I've had it for 2 years, treated it rough, and it still comes through.
Interesting thing on this is the knurling/texture on the handle. Haven't seen another like it. Don't know if it was a prototype or a homemade job.

Used the file to rig a cleaning tool from a hearing aid wax filter installation/removal thingy that they typically come on. Ended up using the shaft of a Q-tip to clean wax from my grandfather's hearing aids. But I got a good test out of the file; it's not as good as Vic. I'd say equal to my 2013 Super Tool 300. I don't think anything can be as bad as the files on my Paratool and Pocket Power Plier from SOG.

O.K. the "scribe" is one of the best MT tools I have ever had. It needs to be on a lot more MTs. And I plan to make one for the MP600 at some point.
Day 22:
Used scribe to scrape glue off of the table edge before applying the color and finish.

I don't know about aggressiveness making files better or worse. The older Vic files were better for detail work(similar to 300 and US Schrade), but I find the new stainless Vic files(like the LM Rebar) to be too aggressive for fine work. If I need an aggressive file, I generally need to remove a LOT of material and have loads of big bas-tard files to use.
I stopped carrying the Rebar in rotation, because of the hard cut file. :(
SOG files(except for the early round tip files) are generally mild, but do work. The PowerAccess files are the worst of any MT.
For me, what makes a good MT file, is how well the metal holds up under use. Gerber has the best file metal I've had extensive use with.

I'm a fan of the Scribe/Awl too, I'd like to know if it was an original idea or based off something, but that short, sharp, curved blade really comes in handy

Moved the sheath from the horizontal to vertical position in order to accomodate my Mora Basic (one of two, the other is red/black with red sheath), which I used a little today. By far, it's my favorite fixed blade. Great steel, and not much more expensive than a fast food combo. I chose to put the Tough Tool sheath behind the Mora, due to the fact the TT sheath rides higher than the Basic's pommel.
Also had this little Schrade Walden (1960s) Eli Lilly advertising fob knife in the shirt pocket (as my sweatpants don't have pockets) relaxing around the house today. This pattern was exclusive to Lilly, and as with most, it does have a Wharncliffe tracheotomy blade. Its nailfile was also put into use.
Tools used: pliers put the grate on the gas fireplace back where it belongs and the awl/scribe scraped off dried foam from the Hibiclens soap pump.

Day 24:
A chair in my workshop sprung a leak in the rise/fall mechanism. Since I keep that particular chair at maximum height, I just drilled a hole at the point I wanted the seat and out a 1/4" bolt through. Works like a champ. :)
Had to grab an ST200 to help with the doubled nuts.
The TT is accompanied by a smallish Browning folder that was a freebie at Cabelas last year.

Before I removed it from my belt (I don't carry fixed blades in public, even though it's perfectly legal, and a lot of people carry Buck and similar fixed blades around here, which the 3.5" Mora is small in comparison to; and might I add slightly shorter in blade length to the Buck 110; the LT version carried regularly, in public), I took a better photo.
Here's how it sits with the Mora in the sheath behind it. The pommel is about equal with the "TOOL" text embossing on the sheath. I typically carry it horizontally. Vertical has too much movement, and I only carry it that way with another sheath, the Mora in this case.

Today brought two uses; one yanking a sharpener out of a Klein Journeyman's pouch it got wedged in; which I typically just use as an organizer inside the tool cabinet in my room. Secondly, was showing my grandfather how easily the cheap diary/piggy bank locks are picked, and I preceded to break open the lock; not just pick it; but tearing out the rivet holding the cheap little thing together. No photo of that, er, um mistake.

I do carry vertical, but only do it with sheaths that ride around the belt line, not above. The custom dual sheath I use at work rides a smidgen over the belt, but it is still within reason. Most MT makers have the belt loops on the sheath sewn well below the top of the sheath and in the middle of the sheath. LM, Gerber, Vic, SOG, etc. all do it. :facepalm:
Some of the companies have a few sheaths that will ride nicely though, such as some of the Molle types that have the loop starting at the top of the back on the sheath.

Started trying to fix the left hand side sliding bifold door on the closet, which my folks chose to put in to a closet they put in my room when I was a kid. Always hated it in comparison to my old, traditional closet on the other side of the room that was removed in an expansion to the bathroom. It's always coming off the track for some reason, this time, it's been tough to put back on. With a few missing pieces, replacement handles, and a mangled track, I'll likely buy a replacement hardware set and redo it all. Thankfully, at $15, it's fairly inexpensive.
File, smoothed the chewed up tops of the plastic guide. Screwdriver, started loosening the screw to move it then used the cordless impact as it was jammed. Pliers adjusted the bottom pivot, and finally, I drove the track guide into the proper position using the Harbor Freight 2.5# dead blow and the Irwin "Perfect Handle" tanker's tool kit screwdriver. The Irwin is of course collectible, but has mushrooming on the cap, and I had to file out a ding in the tip. Being full-tang, I use it for danged near everything--pry bar, punch, and of course, screwdriver. Plus, with a dead-blow you don't risk mushrooming anything metal you hit. That's why I made sure to buy one early in the month during February's Harbor Freight trip (I often make one a month).
I also used the blunt nose pliers and 5/16 impact bit I keep in the driver of the Craftsman Professional Multitool.

I really love the older screw drivers, regular and full tang. I still use mostly wood handled drivers at my work. If the driver isn't worth more than $25, I use it, and use it hard. The old ones seem to hold up better than the new ones. And, to top that off, the older screw drivers have a longer blade/tip on the shank, so they can be ground and sharpened dozens of times. :)

Hard to believe we've been at this that long. :ahhh

A lot of that dirty "W-word" today. It was 55F and sunny, and I wasn't gonna waste this beautiful day lounging around the house.
I had to pull out the stick used to hold the feed box open--that stick had broken off, so I used the scribe to spear and yank the broken piece out. Then, I got the grill working for the year. Had to put a bolt back in and replace a nut, but I used the cordless impact and a 6" adjustable wrench to fix it right. After lighting it, I used the pliers to replace the burner covers and grates. Next task was started on getting the Craftsman leaf blower working. IT hasn't ran in 3 years. Pulled the spark plug with the standard chainsaw tool (flat screwdriver and spark plug wrench) and then cleaned the spark plug using the scraper and file. It was still running intermittently and only on full choke. Probably will have to change the air and fuel filters--I've got to look the model numbers up, and I'm sure parts are no longer being produced for it, even though it's less than 10 years old.
Along with some of my recent Tomica additions (Toyota Himedic, Mitsubishi Fuso Canter blower, and Morita MVF; Mercedes 4850 and Schnabel Trailer with Transformer) purchased from Japan, and which arrived yesterday (after almost a month!, should NOT have gone with the cheap shipping; usually it's 2 weeks). All are very well made. The MVF itself weighs almost as much as the Tough Tool.

Two uses; one the saw and finally, something really great with the pliers. I'd dropped the work keys (to the garage, and various outbuildings) in a rather sizeable gap between the stairs and the foundation to a garage apartment above the farm shop that primarily just serves as a place to store just about everything (largely furniture, rugs, and a whole ton of other stuff). After a ton of contorting the keys and pliers, I yanked them out. The Tough Tool did get a few battle scars from the stone and concrete (mainly on the scraper, since it sticks out), but not that many.
In the coming days, we're doing a bunch of remodelling, so I'm hoping I'll get to use my second favorite off brand tool, the Klein Electrician Hybrid; which by the time we get to installing the ceiling fans, will be during the MiniChamp challenge.

The ToughChip has some of the best scissors on the keychain size class. IMO of course.
Two uses; one the saw and finally, something really great with the pliers. I'd dropped the work keys (to the garage, and various outbuildings) in a rather sizeable gap between the stairs and the foundation to a garage apartment above the farm shop that primarily just serves as a place to store just about everything (largely furniture, rugs, and a whole ton of other stuff). After a ton of contorting the keys and pliers, I yanked them out. The Tough Tool did get a few battle scars from the stone and concrete (mainly on the scraper, since it sticks out), but not that many.
In the coming days, we're doing a bunch of remodelling, so I'm hoping I'll get to use my second favorite off brand tool, the Klein Electrician Hybrid; which by the time we get to installing the ceiling fans, will be during the MiniChamp challenge.

We had to adjust the sprockets on 2 of these oven conveyers to keep them centered. The pick came in handy for scrapeing out the sealant/glue over the set screws, and the large flathead worked just fine on the tensioner.
One of the ovens was in use and could only be down for a few minutes. I was using the pliers of both the TT and my ST300 to pull the hot chain loose while sombody else tapped the sprocket into place with a hammer and punch.

It's not perfect, but I feel it is the best at the $20 price point they're going for on Amazon, decent at its $30 MSRP. The handles are somewhat loose at the pliers pivots, and the blade sometimes is lazy on lockup. However, the cutters are among the best, the drivers are the best, and the strippers work pretty good. Not to mention VERY tough pliers.
Today, I did some yard clearing work, but didn't use the Tough Tool. I think the only tasks done with any of my EDC was opening a statement with my Stockman's blade, and my flashlight to find the Silky in the closet, which had fallen out of its pocket in my pack.
While I used the Stihl (Ochsenkopf) Forestry/Camp hatchet for most of it (didn't use the old True Temper Jersey pattern, head was loose, and thus dangerous, gotta put some wedges in), about halfway through I switched to the coarse tooth Silky Pocketboy 130mm. For such a small saw, it performs great on sappy pine and other things that hang up much larger saws with finer teeth. The Stihl, oddly (at $30) is cheaper than its Ochsenkoph equivalent (which is about double). According to the owners of the local Stihl dealer, they sell a lot of these, and they're very well liked. I've had this one a year. It's the perfect middle ground between a regular camp hatchet and a full axe.

Indeed, the Klein is surprisingly good for $20. I must admit, shamefully, that I paid $40 for my first one. :facepalm:
Fortunately I got the second for $20, so it evened out to $30ea. :)
It would be worth $40 all day long if they would tighten up the QC on it.

Some final thoughts...
First Thank You G-Man, I would never have considered or tried a tough tool if not for your gift.
Now to the tool it's self. I don't think any one would disput the TT is a very unique design with an aluring but awkward apearance. due to this I was concerned about doing this challenge. I sense have come to conclude the awkward part is mostly undeserved. The TT is over all very easy to use and very capable. A few tool positions do end up being strange (the can opener) but still are very usable. I was very impressed by the scraper and even more so by the awl/ scribe tool. The tool steal is good, the pliar head just may be near indestructable and the phillips is one of the best I've used despite it's strange look and the file works well. I will say the blade although adequit is just okay the ruler hook remove is difficult to open the small flat driver needs to lock and it needs scissors. All in all the USA Tough Tool is a truely capable tool and well worth it's current selling price point.

G-Man, they cut well. One would never know they were restored. The insulation on electrical THHN wire tends to slip out of the jaws Once you get past the outer insulation tend to slip and they have a very small bight so if the wire is of any size you mst nibble through it.

There are a couple of things I had an issue with are; the file not locking, so having to hold it with push/pull strokes lessened the usable space(but, like Douglas said, the file is good otherwise), the rivet system loosens more quickly than it should(I have had to peen every TT tool/mount pivot that had crossed my path), The bulbous pliers pivot lessens the side-on purchase(but, not too much, just notable), when swinging out the pliers the tools can fly open sometimes(you have to be careful to swing it just right), the small flat-driver seems to be ground to thin(sometimes twisting a bit, so I have to be careful), there isn't a mid-size(between the large and small flat drivers), the cutters need a notch somewhere for grabbing wire so it doesn't slip, and lastly I would have liked to see more of the tools lock.
All of that said, the USA ToughTool is a standout, because of it unique design and thoughtful engineering. Considering it was designed in the hayday of patent issues, being limited in design options, it functions well above average for a multi tool. The pliers are absolutely phenomenal, with the steel quality and laminated jaws being near-perfect. Using the pliers is a delight, as the splay is minimal and the handle shape provides two different options for usability(choke up for fine work and use further back for cranking down). The handles flex a little bit, but after using the tool a bit, you just know they aren't going to give in at all. The tool steel, as Douglas said, is good. None of the tools broke under hard use. The small flat driver did twist a little, but that can be ground down a bit and sharpened. The file's single-cut side got a little bit of damage from sharpening a drill-bit(not smart, but the situation provided no alternative).

Indeed, the cutters could do with some notching. I constantly had to push the insulated wire(18-2 lamp wire in my case) up into the cutters. :rofl:
Come to think of it, I may do a mod on a TT, where I angle the cutter teeth back so they don't push the wire out.

The 106OT was all I actually carried, with the Tough Tool being close by. I actually used every blade on the 106OT (clip and pen cutting apples and peeling oranges, cut my fingernails with the scissors), but the TT wasn't used. The 106OT is smaller than my typical 3" or larger limit, but the increased girth due to the scissor layer makes it a lot easier to hold and use.
Also, is my example the only one on which the pin serving as the pliers pivot spins around? Guessing it needs to be re-peened; but doesn't seem to mess up the function of the pliers or cutters at all.

The latest TT I bought, which is a near-mint example of the last US generation(with cast pliers made to look laminated) and the pliers pivot will turn in the jaws. It doesn't hurt the function, as you said, but it is probably one of the only pliers-MTs out there there that the spinning pivot doesn't mean big problems for the pliers. :)

That's too cool Noa. I've been working on their ovens for the better part of 15 years now and trained 6 other techs to do so. I have even had the pleasure of finding some problems and fixes Middleby didn't know about. I've even stumpped their lead Support Tech a couple of times. Not often though he's great, probably the best I've ever had the pleasure of working with and I've worked with a bunch of support techs over the years. He's a great guy that I would love to meet in person. It's just a long way from Texas to Illinois.

Now my thoughts, as a long time owner/user, I've always been a fan, when I originally decided I wanted a multitool back in the mid 90's outdoor magazines were my only source for research and the TT was getting lots of hype as what's new.
So with no prior experience with multis, I purchased mine and it's still my only experience with multis other than Saks.
Admittedly, I've always paired it with a Recruit so I rarely used the tools other than the pliers and the pliers are awesome, but again I can only speak for the first generation U.S. made version, but from what I've seen and heard here the later U.S. models are good too, I think Cody mentioned his Taylor had issues with the pliers, I apologize if I'm wrong.
During the challenge, I laid off the SAK and stuck with the TT toolset, it was the first time using the can opener and mine was terrible, the rest performed above and beyond, but I do think the blade is rather light duty, on the upside though mine has a monster of a serrated blade, too bad none of you have one.
Sorry if I'm rambling, but like I've said I'm a big fan and after 23 years the TT will remain my only plier based multitool, it's only competition my newly discovered Swisschamp which I guess has pliers

It's probably going to end up living in a first aid & emergency kit for my wife's car. It's unique open design should make it a little more intuitive to a non-tool person in my opinion. That was the original purpose of buying this one to begin with; but we all know how future planned projects usually end up.

Just did the math, I started a day late, so my last day will be Monday. The Tough Tool is, and always will be my favorite. Namely for its industrial focus on design. Today's use was with my favorite tool on it; using a razor blade and the scraper to remove the labels from a case that used to hold a cheap first aid kit so that I could reuse it to keep some smaller gear in my pack from getting misplaced. Just did the math, I started a day late, so my last day will be Monday. The Tough Tool is, and always will be my favorite. Namely for its industrial focus on design. Today's use was with my favorite tool on it; using a razor blade and the scraper to remove the labels from a case that used to hold a cheap first aid kit so that I could reuse it to keep some smaller gear in my pack from getting misplaced. To open, squeeze down on the blade while its pointed tip up, it will spring up, clearing the handle (not an automatic), then open it manually. To close, hold it pivot up and while doing that, push the blade back in the handle. The "bottle opener" looking thing servess as a detente working on a small BB inside the handle. This is basically a knockoff of the mechanism used within Imperial trick openers (which I need to get at least one of) of the 1950s-1970s. Basically, this thing is my "fidget spinner" or whatever those things are. I keep it on the dresser in front of the TV.

Those Trick knives are awesome. I had two Imperial versions at one point, but a now-ex GF talked me out of the mint one. :facepalm:

Got cleaning and maintenance done on the last day of the challenge. Really need to get some dedicated cleaning brushes, as opposed to old toothbrushes. Since the MiniChamp is far from being a heavy duty tool and lacks pliers, I'll still continue to carry the Tough Tool through the end of March, when I start with the Surge challenge. It's been a great challenge. The Tough Tool never had a job where it failed, and I discovered new uses for the tools. I never found a use for the ruler/hook remover, which to this date I consider a bit useless, especially when that indent messes up the centimeter portion. I guess they didn't want to stamp the other side, to save costs. They could have etched it, as they often did with ad knives.

You're certainly welcome. But, that said, I think you've earned it. You stuck out the TT challenge with the Taylor version. :ahhh
I hope it makes you as happy as the US TT makes me. Such a great old-school tool.
Greg may have gotten it right all along having only owned a USTT. May not be the best MT available, but it has proven itself for sure. :cheers:

I too look forward to seeing what you two think of the USA TT. I ended up liking it far more than expected. It is a bit quirky but that's part of it's charm. It realy is a great tool that dose not get it's due.
