When I go to Oslo, I visit some tap houses (Crow bar, Oculus, etc) and my favorite book store there (Eldorado). Now, for a foreigner to buy beer in Norway usually just ends in a rant about alcohol prices, and most of the books are in Norwegian... I guess the royal palace, Fram-museet (about polar expeditions), and Vikingskipsmuseet (has viking ships from archaelogical digs) would be a few obvious choices. Also, the Munch museum is a pretty safe choice.

I don't live in that part of the country, though, so I'm not that familiar with the city.

It's small pieces of pickled herring with onion and spices you'll usually get in Norway.

If it weren't in February, I'd say go play Disc Golf. They have a number of well rated courses.

Maybe not so fun in the middle of the winter, though. Also, I may have a disc golf problem. But... but... I DO carry a swiss army knife in my disc bag. So... :D

Take a trip on the Fjords, even the regular commuter boats offer some spectacular scenery.

'Fram' was Nansen's ship in the Arctic, and and Amundsens's ship in the Antarctic. Its in an enclosed dry dock, and is the center piece of a facinating museum on polar exploration. The 'Kon Tiki' museum across the street is less interesting.

If you are into winter sports there are likely some options not too far from the city center.

If you appreciate sculptures of intermingled nude people and angry kids then Vigelandsparken is worth a visit. There is also this fine food court thing where you can likely get all kinds of food specialties. (Fair warning; many likely remained local and stayed specialties for some reason..)

I'm not that often in Oslo so I don't know what the hot spots in the city center are these days. As for areas to avoid I think that is still around the stock market at night. (This might show how out of touch I am!)

I think there is some winter sport thing near Holmenkollen. Most likely there are skiis and snowboard or whatever for rent too. Holmenkollen with its ski jumps is a tourist spot in its own right I guess as well.

A Good opportunity to check out the Norwegian black metal scene.   :salute:

Which somehow made me think of Stave churches.. They were built towards the end or just after the Viking age, and Christian building traditions hadn't really cought on yet. So most of them have stuff like dragon heads, demons, snakes and what not carved in as decorations. :)

Have to agree with this, although I personally found the Viking ship museum quite boring. But if you visit the fram museum it makes sense to also go to the viking ship museum since they are in the same area (about 15 minute walk from the viking ship museum to fram, if I remember correctly).

Also I recommend visiting Akershus fortress.

What no snow?  :(

This was during a time I wandered about and felt a bit starved in Oslo: Oslo this city from which no man departs without carrying away the traces of his sojourn there. (Cue dramatic digression and somewhat fitting reference).

Anyway, I was a bit hungry so I was walking outside in Oslo once to get some dinner. It was perfect winter weather with big snow flakes falling slowly to the ground, making up a maybe 5-10cm high gentle white carpet all over. Truly great I thought all until I heard the news "Extreme weather in Oslo! Public transport struggling! You might slip and fall"..

Sometimes I just feel like these extreme weather announcements have gone off the rails. A bit like that boy crying for wolfs or whatever it was.

Anyway, a bit higher than sneaker shoes is probably a good idea. Just in case of extreme weather :P

Fly fishing in winter in Norway? That's a new one. ;) (Rivers will typically freeze over and be covered in snow this time of year, unless they're big, of course.)

Oslo right now: http://www.webkameraerinorge.com/camview/164.html

(Lot's of other cameras for the area if clicking around a little.)

Fly fishing in winter in Norway? That's a new one. ;)

Most people will also fish the rivers for salmon and except a few mentally challenged ones they will be at sea this time of year.

There are always the proper season though. And then it might a better choice to go to second tier rivers rather than fight over the quite costly and limited availability at the more famous ones.

Right... Pabs, shopping list:

Goblin Burgers
Cheese slicer
John Court owes me a tenner, but he lives in Finland, so you'll have to get a bus.
A-ha Live in Norway 1987 t-shirt medium (I'm a large, but I like a tight fit)
Lucozade
Smoking pipe suitable for blowing bubbles (see Charlie Brown episode where Snoopy dresses up as Sherlock Holmes)
Spangles
Moon Boots size 8 1/2
Mags will prolly want some cheap (steal them) leaks
Spyderco Native 5
Miss Marple DVD box set - Joan Hicks one
WW2 era goggles
Bottle of Talisker

Ahh I know I'm forgetting things, but I'll get back to you later. What time are you leaving?

Hm, as noted earlier, it seems all our Norwegian members are located outside the Oslo region. Fjällräven has a brand outlet in Oslo, if that's your cup of tea?

it is easy to find very good coffee in Oslo, if you need something warm to drink and like a little "different" coffee. Norwegian style quality coffee is a very light, often floral, roast, so if that sounds interesting, you can look for names like “Wendelboe” and “Stockfleth”. “Kaffebrenneriet” hasn't quite the same "cred", but it's still pretty good. I just realized that's something which is somewhat unique for Norway. (The current style of very light roasts actually originated in Norway.) Another name to look for is “Solberg & Hansen” (the coffee distributors behind ”Kaffebrenneriet”, but they also operate their own stuff, the.) Generally, if you see a place selling coffee as “handbrew” (“håndbrygg”) with the telltale sign of aeropress, Kalita, or similar, you can usually try what the locals consider good coffee.

(I like coffee very much myself, perhaps you can tell...  :P )

A little late to the party.
I wish I had seen this earlier.

I agree with Steinar on the sightseeing.

If you like modern art you can vistit the Astrup Fearnley museum http://afmuseet.no/en/hjem , at Aker Brygge and then take the ferry over to Bygdøy to visit the Fram and Vikingship museums. Akershus Festning (akershus fortress) can also be seen and visited from Aker Brygge.
If you like burgers, Beach Club on Aker Brygge has great burgers. https://www.akerbrygge.no/servering/beach-club/

Ps. The beer prices are outrageous.

Unfortunately Im not that often in Oslo, so Im not that familiar with the city.

PPs.  Forsvarsmuseet (the Army museum) at Akershus Festning is free :D

Once you land in Oslo remember to spend all your tax free quotas. It is almost like a patriotic duty in Norway - it will make you feel local straight away. (And might come in handy when you see the coffee prices..)

Have you made contact with the natives yet? Remember to not excuse yourself if you bump into someone, don't expect to be bothered by service in shops, and sit as far away as possible from everyone else in public transport :) )

Can you ask them to take you to their leader? (Ok, I'm just curious where you'd end up  :D ).

So, story time.
A bunch of months ago, I bought the starter box for Dungeons and Dragons 5e, intending to try it out and maybe get more invested into it if I liked it. I haven’t gotten the opportunity to play it seriously yet though.

Present day. Walking to an army surplus store(most likely place to find SAKs, you know.  ;) ), we take a few side roads not directly on the way to see more of Oslo.
We have a “random encounter” as they say in D&D with a shop named “Games Workshop”. If you know it, you might know where this is going.

We decided to go in out of curiosity, me interested in looking for D&D material, like some interesting colours of “funny shaped dice”.

Once inside, we find that it’s all about Warhammer, and the only dice are normal shaped, aka d6.

Then we get suckered into each of us picking a lil’ Warhammer figure and painting it, for free.
(Pics of mine later)
Which led to buying some starter Warhammer material, like a pack of figures and paints.

Long story short, now we have some Warhammer stuff, and judging by how much the younger siblings like the idea of playing RPGs with little figures that they painted, we’ll be seeing more of Warhammer or similar figure based RPGs in the future.
All because of some free figure painting.

A dastardly bit of upselling by the guy running the shop.  :P
Kudos to him for being so helpful that we bought into a game we weren’t intending to buy into.  :salute:
I’d say that he regained his investment on the free figure painting.

Back in the day when Rolling Stones had a concert in Norway they had a Norwegian band as warmup. When Rolling Stone finally got on the screaming girls on the first few rows just walked out - just as if the main act was already over and done with.

Later it turned out the manager of the Norwegian band had hired all those girls to do that. It was his clever way to hype the Norwegian band and get media attention. It worked. :D

oh I have a friend that's been into WH40K for years now. Back at high school he was already collecting them,
he's gone through Chaos Marines, Tyranids, Imperial Guard and Eldars armies, and went 3-4 times a week to a nearby Games Workshop to play there.

He was very good at it and I bet he's still collecting and painting them

at the time I did multitool mods he was doing mods to his miniatures   :D

Reboot your brains and the memories should be installed. I got the lucky dip packages.  :ahhh

For a reset I shall offer to fill your poor brain with things that can be unseen or unheard. It will lay waste to several of your brain cells, and try as you might you can never forget. After this devious performance you will realize that Black Metal is far from the hardest music in Norway. Only the deaf can take this over time - people have even been known to jump from cars at speed if played.

Sputnik (a infamous music legend in Norway) has actually sold albums multiple times to diamond and platinum, and there is even a museum dedicated to him. It doesn't get more niche Norwegian than this. His normal genre is folk/ country but the guy has plenty of humor (Sputnik underwear anyone?) and has even done a rap video. So next time you know what authentic souvenirs to get - maybe for your not so good friends.. :P  Fair warning - you'll never get these minutes of your life back:
