Title: Sog Powerlock 30 day challenge
Post by: RF52 on August 17, 2018, 10:31:24 AM
After winning Nix's GAW of the Powerlock and getting a few small nudges from Nix about doing the challenge it's time to start.

First impressions are good about the tool, it's big but not too big. The tool loadout seems good, the knife is sharp and it seems to be a good layout for work carry What I'm a bit suspecious about is the file, not quite sure it can knock over the MP800 file that has seen a lot of use but we'll see.
Never tried a Sog before so it was a bit unusual to not be able to open one handle as usual but I'll get used to it.

Day 1: Used the knife to cut a brakesnake(hose) for the parking brake at a bus at work, no problems there

And compared the philips driver to the philips on the MP800, Powerlock beeing the clear winner with longer reach and brand new and not mangled (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180817/37766c96533590b050dec72468dfc114.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180817/c1be4358b4fcf960f0bf8d632cf9708a.jpg)

*GLBM pulls up a chair*

This should be interesting to watch your challenge thread. I, for one, do like the PowerLock, so it'll be cool reading your thoughts on it.

The metal Gerber uses on their files seems to hold up better than any other file metal on other MTs. But, we'll see if the SOG PL file cancone through when needed. :salute:

Day 1 continued:
Used the flat driver to pry open a rubber cover to get access to the brake cylinder.

Tried the scissor on a zip tie, failed at that but did not really think they would make the cut.

Used the wire cutter to finish the zip tie job (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180817/2c9ccf7303de6ea1bd3f095fc003c050.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180817/6bb3e82303a8fdcbc56d347c02573522.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180817/85e03b2a0764992acccfd021b088210f.jpg)

W,

I used my PL knife less scissors on several materials and they worked phenomenally well. I think Nix had a defective set of scissors on his (now RF's) PowerLock. I'll do some comparison testing this evening(after work), as I now have two SOGs with those same scissors. And I always caution anyone to be weary of judging a tool as a whole, just by one person's example and experiences with it(I trust Nix to be honest, but I don't trust every example of a tool to represent the whole of the model). :ahhh

(and I still have my Powerlock. RF got the second one that SOG sent me, NIB.)

I had forgotten about you having received two! Very cool you sent him the new one. :salute:
I'd like to see if his scissors will cut strong, light paracord, and other reasonable materials. I will do the same at some point. The PL traveler and PowerGrab have those scissors. The Traveler also has modified handle covers, that solve some of the issues you had with the tools. The phillips on the traveler will open 90 degrees with the cover closed, and the scissors sit perfectly inside the handles. Such a widely different set of things with these PLs. It is almost like SOG uses parts from different years to build PLs, even if the parts are not the best fit with each other. :ahhh

I am not saying that SOG scissors are no good
I am more interested to know how RF52 scissors work
Compared to the scissors That Nix has got on The same MT
As he had a pair that needed a bit of work before they worked
So all I want to know is do these ones work :tu:

I'm glad the scissors worked out on your PL, RF52!

I don't think you'll ever find non-Vic scissors to be as good as Vic scissors(with exception to the Surge, that has the best MT scissors out there for heavy duty small-scissors tasks). And I think it boils down to the fact that Vic strongly goes after companies that rip-off their scissor design.
Which is understandable.

Day 2 continued (again)

Used the blade to make a sallad, it did good with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese, sweet pepper.
Not so good with onion and I didn't even try the lettuce.

Not impressed by the can opener, but it does the job

And a pic of dinner, eggs, bacon and tomato beans (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180818/aa07b7ec8a179c9d38ea3c8da4c5a18f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180818/c105093f665482ddf91eb5df9fc9e6ee.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180818/7ac956b9aa4ef93d707abe171068c7d0.jpg)

Day 3:

Paper test for the scissors, they cut but are a bit awkward to use for long cuts so the result is not pretty but they do get the job done.

Used the bit holder to screw a signaling light in place. Works very well

Used the needlenose pliers to give the cable connections the final nudge to lock in the contact I like that they are really slim and pointy

And the wire cutter to strip  a couple of wires. So far I think they are very good.

Overall a good start of the day and the powerlock has been very good
Have also opened a few boxes, no pics.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180819/2b40063ea7c9a7e79c491d60c1a11381.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180819/7d4aa573add0197ae21751cec86cad72.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180819/06f55197809416f9dd1f4a0bce12ec6f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180819/f8908b0a4eaa7f920c006c071d03c7ec.jpg)

Thanks guys I don't awlways use a MT this much, but it's been a lot of good tests for the Powerlock available at work

Day 3 continued:

Cut some hoses for a couple of coolant leaks. Works like a charm, but I may want to get a PE blade and serrated blade eventually.

Used the ruler to measure a lambda censor so I could get the right spanner, mostly just to see how easy/awkward it was to use. Probably works better for measuring where you want to cut something like wood or a metal sheeth

And the knife to open the packet the censor came in.

Also tried the wire crimper and used the phillips driver to check the rear lift on a rental car we used to get our new bed, got the lift to work and we got the bed home, no pics

Thanks for following guys, makes the whole challenge much more fun (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180819/f82ddb5ee587aa2ed1e5ae579b2a103d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180819/d07a41a1aa595b09876fce87beb9da36.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180819/4c8c719af2cea925610f5ee230a3694f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180819/b53c7bf3ca48cc24a52536d39367fea4.jpg)

The powerlock cuts silicone hoses like butter, the black hose was reinforced with some kind of thread so a little tougher but it did a good job cutting that too The Benchmade is a superb cutter, but a bit too pretty for this dirty environment just yet Maybe when I've had it for longer, and finish the challenge of course

Day 4:

The file did a good job on removing sharp edges from a modified socket at work. A bit surprised that it removed metal at all considering how it looks. Only wish they had made it all the way to the edge to get a more useful file

No problem using the wood saw on small branches, had to test it while walking the dog in the woods

The knife was not perfect working with wood, but it's half serrated so did not expect it to be.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180820/f968d9a5c4677702acf58f3cf7ac120c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180820/168a296088de4e4d7066dc5fbf78f3a3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180820/8427afb275c34a4d31d400076133264d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180820/9690a2560109e47a92fe8bce2ddb4ea4.jpg)

Used the knife to open some packs of food items for dinner, no pics.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180821/66bdb823d0c631ed04a91347bce9221f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180821/757d199ee545ed871c45eab23d7ab6b4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180821/5597e0ae0db7b3fd2bdbe78ef90161bd.jpg)

Day 6 continued:

Used the scissors to open a packet of grease for a new brake calipper, I think they cut well just a little awkward to use.

Needlenose pliers to remove staples for a brake calipper box, easy to get under with the thin end on the pliers

Blade to open a different brake calipper box, still sharp (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180822/767c006e8710bbd37d48aa8ce0ded6d3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180822/e6cdefe46a3371edc8525c4ba4ff5e0f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180822/4f0ce4f4ec75393dc70430ec8d1fc1e4.jpg)

Haven't really used the pliers much yet so can't really say. But I'm sure I'll get the chance during the challenge It was a bit unusual to open the handles but I'm getting quite used to it by now

Back when I used a PowerLock, I never liked that you couldn’t really use it with the handles open (leverage, reach)

The force you can put on the pliers is stellar, however :tu:

My favorite thing about the PL(aside from the pliers and end-user customizable tools), is that even when it get filthy and gunked up, it functions as it should. The tolerances are kind of loose, but that is the benefit. On the flip side, Swisstools have to be cleaned very often or you'll break nails and Leathermans/Gerbers get tight without some sporadic cleaning as well. :ahhh

Day 7 continued:

Flathead driver to open a hatch, did great as usual.

Tried the cutters on a welding wire. Some marks but I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference on performance, not yet at least. We'll see how it holds up

Scissors did great at cutting some shrink tube Seems I was a bit luckier with the scissors than others here.

Wire crimper worked great, as long as it's not too thight a space (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180823/74fa4facd9399157976c4a9f9d678b6f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180823/12726f50abd7f79ba39e2b7b0d79d0a5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180823/e165d5603d644c3158e85af33b038784.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180823/8bb48090560b3418d5cfed4d94a39968.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180823/d54793c0e6410797d2e7b62268cff899.jpg)

Day 8:

A beauty pic from the woods today.
Great to start the day with a 2+ hour walk in the woods with the dog

And tried the file on a small branch, did file the wood but it's a very fine file(both sides)
And I still would like it to be all the way out.

That is probably it for today as I have the day of and we are going to a concert later this evening (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180824/28c3a515e6104da3c871fafbe31527f0.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180824/45da153a5e6cccdc121f2fcea056f4ae.jpg)

As far as dogs dealing with cold. My late pug hated the cold, and the heat for that matter. He had a fan at his bed all summer and a heater by his bed all winter. And his bed was in the air conditioned house(living room). He was really wimpy for a dog.

Short nosed dogs usually have more weather related problems because they can't ventilate properly, which is very sad because they are cool dogs.

Very true. I forget that sometimes. Although, we did have the nasal enlargement surgery done on him as a puppy and he never suffered much breathing issues like a lot of pugs do. But, that doesn't fix the ventilation temperature modulation. Like you said, the shortened snout made it more difficult to ventilate.  :(

Glad it wasn't any worse of a cut! I accidentally cut myself all the time at work, so I'm familiar with the glove piece and tape. :ahhh

Those scissors can cut a glove like that, then they are pretty good. IMO.
I find latex/vinyl/nitrile gloves tend to bind up in small scissors, even some SAK scissors.

Title: Re: Sog Powerlock 30 day challenge

The blade on my newer PL rolls easily as well. I think SOG tapered the blade a bit too much to the edge. Makes it a fair slicer, but their steel isn't heat treated like LM and Gerber. SOG and Vic blades tend to dent or roll more easily from my experience. But, on the plus side, they touch up fairly easily. :)

The blades on my older(U.S made) PL seem a bit harder and take a lot more to roll the edges. Probably a better heat treat, combined with a thicker blade.

RF52,

Maybe check the blade tang and see if it has enough "rise" to prevent the blade edge from hitting the inside of the handle? I haven't noted this on a PL, but I only have two newer ones, so not a big enough selection to know if this is a problem or not. :dunno:
I have a BuckTool that has a tang without enough "rise" and the lock button hits the blade edge. :ahhh
So, just throwing ideas around. Hopefully that isn't the case, because the fixes are frustrating (re-edge the PE portion passed the point of contact, replace blade, send in for repair).

It does hit the inside of the handle, I can see a small mark that is shinier than the rest of the handle and I believe it's the lock notch in the closed position that is the problem since I can move it up and down quite a bit when it's closed.
It doesn't really bother me that much as I'm concidering a mod after the challenge, just have to decide on what components I want It's good to have a look at it once and a while to keep it sharp though.

That’s a shame that it hits the lock notch
Just thinking if you could grind
the notch down a bit so that it won’t hit  :tu:

The notch on the blade is too big so doesn't help to grind of anything.

Haven't decided just yet, but it will be some easy swaps and nothing complicated and fancy Maybe change the 50/50 blade for a PE blade. Have also been thinking of getting the wirestripper, but the wirecutter does a good job at stripping cables. Have to see what is easily available over here too

Day 15:

Used the blade to open a package, and to cut some door seals to lenght. Did a good job as awlways

Used the bit driver to screw a couple of screws as I needed a bigger phillips. Worked very well

Used the ruler on the handles to measure the door seals so I knew where too cut. Works in a pinch or lazy moment when you don't have too be all that accurate

The file got used to file down some rivets that was holding an inverter for passenger lights. Still quite surprised how well it performs

And last the phillips helped remove and put back the light fixture. Also does a good job (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180831/ddda63210c4a55dd1774902cc1e61966.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180831/15bb0ac563a8ca0240cab02b9b2c4765.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180831/18305d5acbe9b16c92ddb3db18378fa4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180831/6b79bb512ee983f06d9a92c24aed14c6.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180831/34e7b3b8de567eccf6efdcaa326da8a8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180831/eaaa40b6f2cf760a066718cda99e67b6.jpg)

Day 18:

Starting of with a beauty pic from a walk in the woods with my buddy who snook in the pic.

Used the scissor to open a packet from Benchmade(deep carry pocket clip).
Open some dog treats
And to cut some plastic string thingy as a test. Did good on all jobs, but a little hard to cut the string if I went too fast

Used the phillips and needlenose pliers to change a light bulb on a bus doorlight. Did great

Used the knife to open plastic packaging for some valve cover gasket. No problems there

And the large flathead to open the engine hatch. Day 19:

Used the phillips to unscrew a couple of filter covers. The phillips works great as awlways

Used the flat driver to pry open one of the covers, only light prying needed

And last the blade cut some plastic to release a filter (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180904/75b5fc62c9f09ea73ab36fa760d31576.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180904/556701e54e75561b7092d2e3d24780b4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180904/de74e8a1e9f32fa6f2f20f392d2e14e4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180904/6339220aa8f35594e00a00bdbd1b2c2b.jpg)

Day 20:

Scissors cut open a snack pack for the dog  after work

Flathead driver to open engine hatches

Tested the awl and drilled a hole in a trash can about 5mm thick plastic, worked like a charm

And the knife cut open some bags with gaskets (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180905/43720da8b592ab47975526fcddffddcc.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180905/12bb8e0097273e2f2d97a1e74ed1926d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180905/31ac442e3ce1c4e2077abede29e2ec49.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180905/5d70225b75e85043279f436e7dae3de7.jpg)

Day 21:

Used the needlenose pliers too wiggle of the bushings on a slow work in progress SAK mod.

Adjusted the headlights with the flat driver.

Cut a of a broom handle with the saw.

Compound leverage pliers to the rescue when the screw under the nut also came loose and had to hold it with something to not tear apart ignition wires. Compound leverage is a great idea

Cut of excess gasket with the scissors.

And open some packs of spark plugs with the knife.

A good day for the Powerlock (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180906/b0288f814afaa817293fbed7f2352f5a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180906/3f70b616263cb6dd59518f256a67c0ba.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180906/1d2d2903df528023c7878a2ec35f4447.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180906/36620c56270246439580b97fb48bad24.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180906/5d1cd1be015f3afb1d2c9f954173226e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180906/01e23e8b99945f9a09a3b7c8878137f8.jpg)

Flat driver helped change a filter

Phillips to thighten a panel on a door

Day 29:

PL saw some work today cutting zip-ties.

Bent and cut a brass rod for a makeshift dust cleaning thingy.

Cut off a warning label with the knife.

Cut some year marks with the scissors.

Used the pliers to remove some fire supression covers, and as a bit driver.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180914/d9cf6448598cf0def0bcb8074acce95c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180914/072e6e87ba62b39e21e5da81888f9b05.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180914/174fd5cc4e02513667db6d467b5b414b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180914/fa03b209c61b2266db1610983f98979f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180914/b5d1173727d553d7f35eb99ce673b497.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180914/20a9239a907c478a3d716f7e5be3c580.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180914/ce7bc88b62ae6081ccaab2ab2c6e6f98.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180914/5c5485d7511ba312ba608c6ba007b1f1.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180914/ecc01d43aa1b3501ffaa5030378c22a0.jpg)

Dropping in a bit late, I know, but I have an excuse - another challenge and too little time as it is

Great challenge RF52, and kudos to you to keep this up all by yourself and with so many pics and great uses for the Powerlock :2tu:

It makes me wish for one as well... perhaps as a knifeless one for carrying in the UK...

Thanks to Nix too, who I understand was the purveyor to the court :D and to the other supporters for, well, their support :D in what can't always have been an easy challenge. Last day today and you'll have earned your badge in spades!

Day 30!

Found some uses on the last day also

Pliers to hold a piece of brass I was cutting which got to hot for my fingers.

Loosening and thightening some bolts on a bandsaw.

Cutting open some meat and veggies for dinner.

A couple of beauty shots from the woods.

And removed some decorative stitching from a belt with the knife and can opener.

A good ending to the challenge.

I have gotten real fond of the PL during this month of use, and haven't had much issues with it except for soft wire cutters and that the knife hits the inside of the handles when closed.
Overall I would recommend the PL to anyone looking for a good, sturdy tool

Thank you very much for keeping me company and a BIG thanks too Nix for making it possible  :hatsoff:(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180915/a81fb37cb6594caf7df9427e6215992f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180915/8e5e5fc5c859499a546626c3a6d6d660.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180915/83d2724b5feab3bac29d7457cb473155.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180915/c021cafb38c4ff54e0c2532e81024444.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180915/d929f751a41c285754908fd6cc4260c9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180915/2f67f65d79cc7a9f5ee717404b1a3e5d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180915/a44d9a8a4f91030268d56b27b78fa6df.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180915/a9c19fd20d86bbfda41f424edc1ea7f7.jpg)

congrats on the badge,  :salute: this was indeed a super varied and fun to watch standalone challenge, in which both the Powerlock and you proved to be worthy of being up to the task,  :hatsoff:

I could see this being a bladeless PL in the future, since, unlike Nix and I, your cauliflower is already cut and ready to eat!!  :D

Cutting open some meat and veggies for dinner.
