Title: Anyone up for a Leap challenge in July ?
Post by: munecito on May 06, 2019, 02:45:35 PM
As per the title.

Who would like to do a LM Leap challenge in October or thereabouts? I think it would be cool to carry the plastic fantastic ones for a month. I can only imagine the attention the green one would get.

Who's in?

Come on,

Good luck with your challenge - unfortunately, I've committed myself to hitting things with an axe this October.  :salute:

It had to be done. And it was.

Well, the leap has tweezers. They may come handy to get splinters out.

That's the spirit, but not the Victorinox spirit which is great too, but the leap spirit, or the challenge spirit, or the... You get it.

Come on we only need a few more to make it official.

You all know "your kids" have been wanting one.  :pok:

Would be nice to drum up a few more ppl but July is far enough. Also I won't be drilling the rivets... No need, the small tools are perfect.

I was thinking..how perfect is the Leap as a summer carry? It's so light and compact. Perfect for shorts.

I won't probably join in July (have been doing challenges most of the year and I will just be finishing one in June :ahhh ) but cool if you guys go ahead :salute: I wasn't going to be able to do the whole month of October either

I may pop in a few days with a pic here and there if you go ahead with it but I won't post a pic everyday :tu:

As soon as I can fix the sissor issues, I will probably carry it exclusively. Especially since I am loving the Paracord pocket clip.

July, October... Who cares. As soon as we have the number we could go ahead.

I only picked October so people had time to get excited about it and buy one to join us.

Title: Re: Anyone up for a Leap challenge in July ?

Any amount can do a challenge but to get a badge you have to have over 5 people participating and finishing  :salute: :tu:

At least I think that is right ??? I need to make sure so don't hold me to that exact number
Title: Re: Anyone up for a Leap challenge in July ?

Post by: munecito on May 25, 2019, 06:19:03 PM
We are 3 so far. 4 If Powernoodle joins.

It would be good to get at least 5 to get a badge. I don't have any badges and would be nice if my first is a newly created.

It really is.  I am enjoying the Leap more than my Free P4, and have ordered a 2nd Leap in green.  That's not to say that the Leap is "better" than the P4 - I just find it "funner".  The Leap rocks 80% of the utility of the P4 at 57% of the weight and 28% of the cost.

60% of the time the Leap works all the time.

 :D

But seriously, one of the things I love about the Leap is that it bridges between the keychain Tools and the full size tools.

I've found a use for the entire toolset, and the removable system provides an opportunity for a lot of customization without voiding the warranty. I just really wish Leatherman could make a decent scissor. Here is hoping the 91mm Vic I just ordered can fit.

Your statement of "The Leap rocks 80% of the utility of the P4 at 57% of the weight and 28% of the cost." is going to hurt P4, and breath new life into Leap sales :D

I've been rocking the spirit as my EDC the last few days. one of the things I love is that the Leap as a bunch of tools that you don't get on the Spirit or other full size MTs. Its a very very interesting set of tools. Literally all it really needs is a decent set of scissors (common problem to all Leathermans).

Sorry bad typing... The Leap has a set of tools that you don't get on most full sided plier based multi tools (the Small 2D Philips, and tweezers).

I only have to scroll back up this page to find an identical looking Philips.
So the very very interesting set of tools is tweezers.

How well do they work?

I found the tweezers on the micra to be pretty good.
Others though not so much.

Yes, same tool on Micra and squirt but nothing with similar plier size has both the 2d Philips and tweezers. The short length of the tools makes it much more usable than I would have thought. Same reason why the Micra ones works so well.

Also Happy Gilmore. I did encounter myself with the scissors issue. There were a couple of things that just wedged themselves in between the blades. So I will be watching your progress with the SAK scissors.

So...strangely...I got a 91mm Vic scissor and found I was still having that issue. There was one other scissor I remembered was incredible at cutting. It came from one of those off brand tools, Link Here:

https://www.amazon.com/DPNAO-Multitool-Adjustable-Multifunctional-Screwdriver/dp/B07P9WVT5N/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=DPNAO&qid=1559165794&s=gateway&sr=8-8

Turns out it also has the exact same pivot size...works independend of the lock mechanism and even has the same curve as the multi-tool when stored..all I had to do is minor adjustments of the frame and scissor and it worked perfectly. Not only that but I can still open it one handed.

But that tool costs more than a leap!

What would you need to do to make it lock?

I thought about using the scissors as awl but I'm afraid it would make them worse.

I found that tool (I think), marginally cheaper.

Of course that waiting time is long.

Still I think at that price I can put up with the mediocre scissors.

This Challenge is only open to elite MT operators.  Applicants will be vetted by the High Tribunal, and due consideration will be given to the applicant's experience, contributions to MT acceptance in modern culture, moral character and physical appearance.

These requirements will be waived for anyone who owns a Leap.

It was $20.94 with the shipping and they do have 2 of the green ones left at that price.  The same tool in red or blue would have been ten dollars more.

I just finished the Super 30 which you too were in it, and do look forward seeing you again in the Trads/GEC 30.  Yes, this is the month of anniversary, but I too am doing the anniversary challenge...so I am guessing I can only do those two at the same time?

Yeah what Steve said and...

July challenges always have to start on time, no late starters.

And lastly, any new badge making has been put on hold.
Maybe you guys want to delay the Leap challenge until you have more people and a badge ready.
Or you could just join in with the anything goes challenge.

Well boys, having learned at the last hour that there are no plans for a badge, that Alan will not be allowed to join in, and as we don't have 5 guys anyway, I guess I am out of this one.  Challenges are a quid pro quo between members and MTO, and there is no use in us providing the quid if there is no pro quo.

Here are the combatants I would have deployed in the quest for sweet, sweet Glory.  Onward and upward!

Tropical Sunrise Leap and Zombie ApocaLeap.

Timmy L would sell 500,000 of these if he tried.

Wow, cheers.
Not my fault people didn't sign up.
Or that they could not be ready on time.
Said new badge making has been put on hold, not that it would never happen.
Please remember that MTo is just members who freely give time and effort.

Too bad, I think a lot of ppl would be surprised just how good the Leap is.

Sad to see this not happen guys :salute: but July is the most busy month here on MTO, so this one needs to be reschelduled or you guys can carry on  As I said I will still support you guys with a pic here and there but since it isn't technically my tool  I can't carry it daily for a month and I have never tracked on down yet :D If you guys do set up another month and get the number of peeps up then for sure we can get a badge

And that is the reason why I was proposing a late in the year date.

Let's move the date. I'm an idiot anyway and forgot that July started two days ago

Lols, yes later. Besides I just ordered 2 spare leaps, so maybe I can hook up a few more ppl in a trade.

Well. I have 2 news a good one and a bad one.

Starting with the bad one. I think October is a no go for me either.

The good news is that I will be going to South America for the month. From the 9th to the 13th of November.

I would love to take my leap (which has become my EDC over the wave and the skeletool) but we will be going carry on only once we get there and we will be crossing the borders often which I think is a no go for airports, not sure about land borders.

Air New Zealand had tickets so cheap that it would have been rude not to get them.
