I think there are several soft touch years/models, not sure myself, but the Climber RT was the 2010 only Road Tour version. The RT scales are not plus versions, I haven't seen any ST plus scales come to think of it. I also have never seen nylon plus scales, but there are far more things that I don't know about, than things I do! :D
I do like the plus scales on a Climber though, nice one El C!

Good one Matt, I did see a silvertech Climber at my local Target, which I thought was amazing at the time, and they also had black alox cadets, which I thought was even more amazing, these cool Vics tucked in an aisle of otherwise useless junk...

Can anyone make a guess regarding the type of wood from which the scales are carved? The knife was a gift so I don't think I ever knew. Thanks!

I have a climber related question.
In my Climber, bought in 2007, the scissors have a white metal rivet, while I see new ones have it in a yellow metal.

 Sweet!!! Look at the shine on those blades!!!
Thanks, B. I'm pretty sure this one has been partially restored - blades polished, scissor spring replaced. Apparently the closing snap is a little weak, but still, a great piece. That clip point blade is looking pretty unused. I plan to restore the scales, which seems easier with the older scales.

Nice one El C!
That might be factory polish, the older Hoffritz ones seem super shiny for some reason. Some Mother's mag polish should bring the scales up to the shine level of the tools, that's what I've had the best luck with anyway. :tu:

You're right about the shine on the Hoffritz, the Super Tinker I have is VERY close to mirror finish... hard to tell until I have it in El hands. I want to say the large blade where it makes a little space between the edge and the tang looks a little worn down, again, hard to tell. A Tourist w/clip point, no KR, Officier Suisse/Crossbow stamp (probably 71 - 74). This one has the Victoria Stamp on the backside of the main blade.

yup, and I meant to say this knife came with the Tourist I referenced above. It has a 4-turn corkscrew... pretty sure that was pretty consistent with the 84mm's?

Not sure about the older 84's, I'm assuming the 91's and 84's used the same corkscrews during the same eras, but might have to verify that with an expert (which I'm not! :) )...

Very cool, prolly a groovy 5 turn El Corkscrew as well... :D
:climber:
yup, and I meant to say this knife came with the Tourist I referenced above. It has a 4-turn corkscrew... pretty sure that was pretty consistent with the 84mm's?
Not sure about the older 84's, I'm assuming the 91's and 84's used the same corkscrews during the same eras, but might have to verify that with an expert (which I'm not! :) )...
All the 84 MM from that late 60s early 70s era, which is quite a few that I have seen, have a 4 turn. I'm gonna get to the bottom of this. :D

I don't actually own a standard 91mm Climber, but I consider the Climber to be the essential foundation for a good Swiss knife.. My first Victorinox purchase was a Tourist, and I realised very quickly that I had cocked up by not getting scissors. Aside from one, I've not really got along with ones that don't have the corkscrew either.
What I do have is .....
Voyager Lite: Climber with inline Phillips, light and alarm clock
Climber Small: The veritable Climber in the more pocketable size (The size the Climber should be)
Brushed Stainless Traveller: Stainless scaled climber small (Wenger version) with nail file instead of the redundant small blade
Serrated Traveller: Celidor scaled Traveller with a partially serrated main blade
Evowood 14: Hardwood scaled Traveller
Soft Touch 14: Another Traveller, soft touch scales and a clip point main blade
Compact: Climber Slim :P Lives permanently in a First Aid Kit
Ranger, Original Outdoorsman, Huntsman, CT34 and CT41 ... arguably all extensions of the Climber "foundation". In fact the only two full size Swiss knives I use that aren't built from this standpoint, are the modified DofE, and that original Vic Tourist that started the journey.

I had 6 of them at one point but sold and gifted a few.
I know how it goes not wanting to carry certain SAKs, but I have reached a point in collecting and just life in general that changed me. I will carry pretty much anything now. I don't care how rare it is. I just look at it like this. If I died tomorrow I would regret not enjoying the knives to their full potential. Sure, some knives give me joy just knowing I own them and they are in mint condition but those are become few and far between. I rather carry and enjoy them while I can. You can't take it with you when your gone.
I do plan on having my brother slip a SAK in my pocket when they put me in a casket though. If there is a after life I want to be prepared with at least one SAK and that's no joke.

Anybody know why it's called "Climber"?

Good question... I would imagine that climbing ropes would be arch enemies with blades... :D
It has also been called the Backpacker, Traveller (No KR), and President... One of the great things about Vic is that they can assign a specialty to a knife somewhat sporadically and arbitrarily and you can't question it, just be in awl.... :o

I'm jealous Barry - I've only read a little about the AT but it sounds like an Excellent Adventure with a Climber to hand. Have fun :tu:
A little jealous here too, I have crossed paths with the AT several times and always wished to hike the length of it. Climber is a good choice, but then again it's a good choice for everything... ;)

Personally I'd prefer a Huntsman but then lugging that extra layer of weight about might not be essential ?

As much as I like the Huntsman (and Farmer), I honestly never had use for a pocket knife with a wood saw. The AT is maintained pretty well, and I have not been on any brushy trails while hiking that the tiny saw would help with anyway, a machete, a pruning saw, or even a camp axe would be more justifiable in terms of weight (IMO). Maybe if I was planning on taking whittling breaks or something? *shrugs* :D
Even the can opener is questionable for hiking, tinned food is not common on the trails either. Along with the corkscrew of course, wine bottles are heavy!
Camping for sure, backpacking not so much.

Just got back Sunday from a weekend hike on the AT. My dad and I were both off and decided on a quick section hike, and what better choice than the clmber! :climber:

That would be my first choice too, sounds like you had a good time.

Just stoped by visiting a friend i recently tuned on to sak's. He always partial to pocket knives but had never bought a sak. We began talking a while ago and he got interested. He just got his first one some weeks ago, a Climber :ahhh
He is pretty happy with it, and i'm happy for him. But now it's got me missing my Climbers, so i broke one out of storage for some pics... :D
The thing is, now i'm even more desperate to get a small climber (84mm), dammit Vic why can't you just bring them back??!! And i even mean the small climber over the salesman (small super tinker), as incredible as it may seem i actualy like the small climber (or 91mm climber for that matter) best. I just think the CS looks better on 3 layers than the Philips... :ahhh

Hello everyone.
My old Super Tinker did not have a hook tool on the back layer, however my 5 year old Deluxe Tinker does. It seems that this "package holder"/ "frozen shoelace"/ old "beer can" opening tool is being included on more and more newer SAKs.
I see a lot of love for that little hook in this thread, while I find little to no use for it and wish it would go away. Can anyone enlighten me as to its worth? Maybe change my mind? Let e know if I should start a different topic thread.
Thanks

I've read that Barry and it gave me a sense of perspective on the AT which deserves respect. It also sounds more appealing than our Pennine Way given a] more trees b] probably less peat hag. Having just come back from a weekend in the Eden Valley I'm still thinking the same thoughts !

Enlighten all people want  , but I also wish the hook would go away. :drink:
Heck, they only put the hook w/ fingernail file on Compacts...you'd think they at least include it on all hooks to give them some value. :pok:

You know if you can't find a good condition Small Climber for a reasonable price, you can always go for the Delemont Evo 14 (85mm). Aside from the Evolution scales, it's just like the old Small Climber. :salute:

The Pennines are, in fairness, very pretty moorland. I went up there to cycle up Great Dun Fell which is one of those top steep climbs for road cycling in this country. We were very lucky with the weather and it was actually quite mild and sunny apart from a spell at the top. With a road bike I wasn't going anywhere near the peat and the tarmac surface of this particular climb is top quality. Strictly I didn't have a SAK with me either. Not even a Classic as I didn't want any avoidable weight !

Yeahh... I know mate, the Evo 14 is a great sak. I have a Evo S16, it's cool but i just can't really bond with it... Classic Vic is Classic Vic for me, i like the plain flat scales a lot more and are much less bulky.
If only Vic also made the Delemont stuff with old Wenger flat scale options i would get one immediately :ahhh
Hell, i bet they could even adapt the Wenger scissors for the classic 84mm models if they want, it wouldn't be Vic scissors but better than nothing....
As much as I and a lot more guys would like, i just don't realistically see Vic bringing back the 84mm scissors, even less with similar redundant 85mm models still in production. I only hope they at lest keep what's left of the classic 84mm line in production for a few more years.
-
Another vote for the Evo14, so far it's my favorite SAK.
I have the wood edition but am thinking of trying one with the dual composition scales. The scissors seem fine to me. Actually the spring gives me a tad more confidence durability wise.
It is a little chunky but to me, in a good way. Next favorites would be the compact at 2 and the climber at 3. I really thought I'd love the explorer but have found 4 layers is just a tad too much, shame.

Agreed in regards to the scales...flat scales are needed!
For my older Wenger Evo 16, I found Wenger flat scales for it, so it's much better. But in reality I prefer to usually carry 2-layer models for the most part. As for the CS vs Phillips, it's a wash for me...it all depends what I'm doing as to whether I carry one or the other.

Picked this up on Ebay a few days ago... I've been to Germany twice for work, and never was fortunate enough to find any SAK like this there. Has anybody ever seen a similar one? I imagine it was a short run for a dealer in Rothenburg someplace, but I really haven't a clue. Aside form the dark mark on the one scale it looks entirely unused. A nice one for my collection!
Funnily enough, my sta-glo boy scout climber was the knife I brought with me on both trips.

I must say that I generally carry a tinker, but figured the corkscrew on my climber would serve me better during my extended stay in North-Rhein Westfalia. Which was true, until I had to assemble a fan for my apartment because of the miserable heat we were having. The one time I needed an SAKs phillips driver, I had my climber :ahhh
but for the various local wines and distilled spirits.... wonderful tool to have! :climber:

Well folks... all the talk of corkscrew usage and glory here have compelled me to FIND opportunities to use my climber rather than my tinker....
Fortunately for my mental health and unfortunately for my wallet, Pennsylvania has a fair selection of local wineries churning out some pretty good product.
So thank you all for leading me into temptation to betray not only my trusty Tinker, but also my beverage of choice, whiskey. I've gone and ruined 2 perfectly good relationships now

Or devolve like I did today, trusty Eco Climber, so smooth, so simple... :D

I could really evolve up to my huntsman!
But I'm not a fan of carrying 3+ layer tools without a specific reason to. my 2-layer tinker is perfect. If I were to get a compact, maybe then I'd carry a corkscrew tool. My climber is finding it's home in my desk drawer now, always ready to slice a peach or open a bottle of mead, or sweet wine...

Had a blue translucent climber but gifted it to a friend. Honestly, I prefer the black or red for El Climber.

I was thinking about selling mine which I bought a day ago thinking it was a Huntsman. But having seen the posts in this topic, I'm having second thoughts :)

Sporting El Favorite Climber Plus today.
I gave away my red Climber Plus to a very good friend last night. I admit, it was kind of tough to part with, but then I considered the excess of SAKs I have and the fact that this friend did not have a single SAK.. Now he's got the best and knowing that makes me feel better than keeping it for myself.
:salute:
-
Good one El C, I'm sure I have gifted away more Climbers than anything else, they are sort of perfect for that.

Hey, how could I miss this club :tu:
I was fondling and carrying my new old original Traveller (Climber without keyring) a bit (story here https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,76308.msg1652934.html#msg1652934 )
And I found that it was the ideal everyday SAK for me... for now :D
But I don't want to mess it up, so I went and got myself a new Climber & put plus scales on it :tu:

Thanks in advance for any info. :climber:

It's probably an advertising piece.
Meaning there's an ad on the front scale and the shield is moved to the back scale.

I gave mine to my girl friend when I was drunk-ish and I think I kinda regret having done that hehe. As a compensation I'm still trying to like my Ranger more than the Climber. Though, for some unknown reason, I can't! I'm a saw- and file-lover but Ranger's file is a destroyer, unlike the "forgiving" and "easy" file of the SwissChamp. Which makes me kinda like the Ranger less...
Maybe it's the basic configuration of the Climber or the fact that it reminds me of SAKs I used to see around when I was a kid... Dunno. But I'm starting to realize that Climber has a special place. It is that basic, uncomplicated, comparatively thin and light SAK which you forget in your drawer, sits there ready to give you a hand when you need it.

Is your Ranger a newer model than your SwissChamp? All of my SAKs have the finer-toothed files, including the Rangers, but mine are all older models. As I understand it, the more recent Victorinox SAKs have a file more like the one on the Swisstool Spirit, and I assume that's the one you mean when you say it's a "destroyer"?

Oh, I think so. It's almost brand new -although I bought it second hand- so I doubt it's an older model. I never used a Swisstool Spirit but the file on the Ranger I mention is like a chainsaw :) For starters, one cannot use it to file down finger nails. I once attempted to file down a lump of lead on a silver ring which turned out to be a mistake. It removed a larger amount of lead from the ring and left wavy marks on the surface :-\ For my purposes that file's not that practical. For harder metals though, it may be a good pick.
Maybe I should be looking out for the older model you're talking about.
@NutSAK
Wow, I did not know there was a Deluxe version of the Climber! Looks hot! Though, apparently it has a philips screwdriver instead of a cork screw. I'm not a fan of "perpendicularly located" screwdrivers (I realize that that adjective clause looks weird but please say you understand what I mean) and prefer a corkscrew.

Yep, that sounds like the Spirit file. That's just another reason why I don't buy newer Vic SAKs and stick to the older models.
I'm right there with you on the backspring phillips. I much prefer the in-line phillips and corkscrew.

That one was from the 2006 SOSAK mod contest. All contestants modded a Climber that year to be submitted for judging by the members of SOSAK.
It took 3rd place. Below is what it looked like then, before the patina naturally formed:

Dropped my favourite Climber yesterday and cracked the top of the front scale...
I'm pissed....
It didn't broke off but i can see and feel the line of crack. It's an early 2000 one, and the scales is the reason it is my favourite, still has the older deeper red shade, and the shield fitting is a bit better than on the later ones.
I'm tempted either to break the piece off and superglue it back, or just scrap those scales and put new ones in and just forget about it.
What do you think...?

Sorry Mac, tough decision. I find new scales easy to get used to. :salute:
Still the black Climber for me, although I did have a SwissChamp day yesterday. :tu:

Maybe source some older scales to have on hand, but use a set of cheaper aftermarket scales for carry. Once you are ready, pop the older sourced scales on. :)
Or just pop the sourced scales on and enjoy it. Tons of options and an immense amount of scales and SAKs out there. :tu:

Your Climber took a fall and fractured a leg (scale). To be expected and now your Climber has character. Keep it the way it is. :tu: Now if you have OCD, that’s a different story.

I understand what you mean, i really don't mind dings or scratches much, one can always smooth them out, but cracks.... That thing can break and pop out at any time, it gets on my nerves...
.....aaand yes... I'm a bit OCD..
It's not a matter of having current replacement scales, i have bucket loads of new ones stored away, its just i like these a bit better for the reasons i mentioned.
I know it may look plain silly so a lot, getting a bit upset over plain standard red scales, but they are the ones i like and use so...

The question was stated in a way that didn't elude to accurate circumstances. Perhaps mentioning a selection of scales would have changed the nature of response. ;)
Tip: The quality of polish on the scales can contribute to different color qualities. But, I can't know anything about SAK scales, because of my username.

I toke some, but its hard to capture the crack properly, its at the very top of the scale coming from the middle (you need to zoom it in), i could move it with my finger so i could have broken it off and glue it back, but heck, i have quite a few scale pairs stored away so i just took the opportunity to make myself a Climber Plus :drink:
BTW... I know im a bit picky...

Nawww, I think that would bug me too. Change out! If it were to break away from the house, you would have a pretty sharp edge there. I could see you cutting yourself getting it out of your pocket.

I must admit that while the Plus scales don't really add a much relevant tool to me (pen) ita always nice to have in a pinch. What i do notice is the plus scales feel a little more comfortable in the hand Vs standard ones, and the difference in thickness in the pocket is marginal.
The curious thing is i now have a "bi-shaded" sak, the front scale is the same deeper red as the original scales that got cracked, but the back Plus scale is the current lighter shade. It's not by much, but it is noticeable, kind of unique... :D

Stayglow scales are hard to beat. Only improvements I could see would be offering them as plus scales, and it would be great if they had the metal-inlaid shield instead of the screen-printed one. Here's mine:

Mine is front and center of my avi.
I too wish it was an inlay cross and not screened.

Yes, nylon. I don't like the red either, the cross seems to wear off/not look right to me......

Hm, I guess I'll join this Challenge. The Climber was my first SAK as an adult, but it got a bit sidelined in the past couple of years as my collection started to grow, I guess it will be nice to rekindle our relationship for a month. :) :climber:

I won‘t be joining this time. I just have to much fun right now carrying something else every day :D
I will be watching and cheering though :drink:

Welcome to the forum, Francois, enjoy your time here! And yeah, the Climber is a very versatile SAK to carry, one of the best for everyday carry in my book. :climber:

Looks like the climber has served you well. Most importantly you have a good wife for gifting you gadgets.
-
For me, it's probably my favorite SAK to carry EDC wise. It's a great combo of tools. When I hit the woods I switch out scissors for the saw and I'm ready to roll!
-
Just to keep the thread alive...here's my Climber lineup. Just added the white. Might as well add a few more. In for a penny, in for a pound...sigh💸

I have been thinking about the name "Climber" and what it could stand for other than mountain climbing. Over analyzing things can be boring to others and fortunately I have not thought about the name so much that smoke is not escaping from my ears. When I first heard the name climber for a swiss army knife I imagined it meant spend a little more for this model knife and enjoy the best 3 layer knife money can buy. Climb the steps to a better knife. Of course my thinking could be total BS about this idea. Second point I am not currently a mountain climber or ever have been. I am much more of a couch potato at this point in my life. Sitting on the couch has afforded me many opportunities to watch action adventure movies involving other people climbing mountains. During these epic adventures someone seems to eventually have to cut a rope to keep from diying. And of course someone else falls to their demise. During these tense movie moments the actors do not open a swiss army to cut the rope. They have a knife that can be easily opened with one hand. 91mm swiss army knives take two hands to open of course. I am in no way degrading the virtues of my beloved climber knives. I am not going to list all the wonderful things a person could do with his swiss army knife while on the side of the mountain because people on this forum already are familiar with those things. So is my concept that the "Climber" name is intended to appeal to those people in the world striving for the better things in life or am I just full of it? Please remember the world was a different place when Victorinox first introduced the climber name. There were few super expensive high end tactical knives. Victorinox was considered a premium product then. I still consider Victorinox a premium high quality product. Peace to all.
-
I don't know, but I enjoy the name. I think of trekking into the mountains with mine at my side.
-
Spartan with a scissors.

Swiss army knives are just great tools to use and own. I agree a climber is just a spartan with scissors. The only name that matters is Victorinox. I enjoy babbling. :climber:

The Climber also has a hook!
I can see the Climber being used by a Climber. One tool to open a tin with protein, a cap lifter to open a bottle at night with favorite beer.
A corkscrew to uncork a bottle of wine at the top of the meadow while enjoying the scenery and a picnic, using the scissors to open the dried meat package, and knife to slice your aged cheese. The AWL to add a new hole for the satchel’s leather strap or clean small rocks from the treads of your boots.
The Climber model is very versatile, and a good Climber would have a fixed blade fixed to his gear for easy access in case of an emergency.

I think of it this way, a climber has to be very weight-conscious, and on this level the Climber could be said to make sense - everything you need and nothing you don't - assuming, as you say, that he carries a fixed-blade knife for rope-cutting etc which I imagine is true.
-
I've used the hook to remove stones from tires...

I took one to a boy scout camp a few years ago. I used every single tool on it, including the wire stripper. I never felt underequipped.

They’re Nagatac brand bought off fleabay, they had both Ti and brass.
Very solid, the Ti weigh 40gm and the brass 70gm. Ideally you need a vice to snap them into place but I was able to do it with vice grips, no glue needed

I am a recent convert to the Climber Club. I struggled with the Corkscrew vs Phillips decision but have just recently come over to the Dark side (corkscrew). I would get frustrated by the lack of reach of the Phillips not too mention the awkward use of the T Handle.
The only thing that held me back was the ability to access recessed screws as I would hate that the can opener could be defeated by a little bit of plastic. Once I added a Classic/Rambler to my keychain that problem for the most part is gone and if it is any more serious then that I need a real screwdriver anyway. Not too mention a screwdriver is easier to get then a Corkscrew.

Stayglow of any kind as never been particularly common (here in UK anyway). A look at the Vic site seems to show that the Rescue Tool might be the only one currently in "phosphorescent yellow". :-\
And of course there is always the exception to the rule :P

No Climber though.

Hello, new member here. Can I join the club? I am hopeful that hanging out here will positively affect my SAK addiction!
Here's most of my climbers. One of the best knives for in town carry!

I'm in!
Just one Climber, bought used on eBay. But the seller had a mini screwdriver and pin in it.
I really like the tool load, but have to admit that I don't carry it, preferring the Explorer. But only because I use the mag glass regularly.

I am all for being part of a Climber Club!
On the weekend I always carry my trusty Stayglow Climber . I love everything about this SAK. . The tool I use most is the scissors so I love that I get those great Victorinox scissors in a 3 layer SAK. As a kid I LOVED anything that was "Glow In The Dark" so for me this is the perfect knife. I am shocked how long the glow stays bright, and even hours later it often has just enough glow to make it stand out in the dark. Perfect for hikes close to home or when I go mountain biking .

...any life on the StaGlow ever measured?

I have actually done some testing.
I left my Stayglow Climber near a lamp for just over an hour. I went to sleep at 11pm, and left it on my night stand. It was nice and bright. At 3:15 am I woke up and it was still very bright. Then at 6am I got up and it had dulled but I could defiantly still see it in the dark.
So that means it was nice and bright for a good 4 hours then dimmed a bit. Sure it wasnt super bright after 5 or 6 hours but I could STILL see it in the dark. I have been very impressed.
I also notice on both my stayglow climber and Classic SD it will glow brightly with even just a couple minutes in a well lit room. Often I pull out my car keys 5 minutes before I leave work at 10pm and I leave them on my desk. When I get in my car my classic stayglow on keyring is glowing very bright in my dark car from just 5 minutes under the office lights.
When I leave my home on a sunny day and I am carrying my keys in my hand for just the one minutes it takes to get to my car I notice my Classic SD is glowing bright when I get in my car from just that one minutes in the sun.
As a kid I LOVED everything " glow in the dark" but was always disappointed because the toys were never as bright, and never lasted as long as they did in commercials. This is NOT the case with Victorinox Stayglow. It is far better than I expected

hey, thanks for the in-depth answer! :salute: I may start with the red SAK lanyard too but a P7 clip makes it less notice in pocket.
P.s. love the scissors.

"Old Faithful" is the model itself, not necessarily this specific "unit"... This one is maybe 3 or 4 years old. I've put in some new scales a few months back though... The surface micro scratches doesn't show in the pics.
I'm more attached to SAK models than any specific SAK units. ;)

But no... nothing like that... I don't really buy any SE or LE Sak's... just the good old standard factory stock red classic models. The other scales where basic red too, just a bit beat up... :P

Here's my favorite Climbers Small, a 70s and a 60s. :climber: The 60s has a very slight bend in the tip which annoys me but I am just leaving alone sice it's a lesson learned the hard way too many times. It also has a very degraded blade etching "Ottenburg Basel" which is the family cutlery shop in Switzerland where it was sold originally. The 70s is one I carry regularly.
Sorry for the filter, I saved from my FB since I just started using a real puter again.

84mm Small Climber...
Beautiful knife, especially with the long nail file. It's actually a Golfer, not a Climber. Climbers have always been 3-layer knives.

I just received an early 80s Climber in the mail today!
Once I have a chance to clean it up and oil the joints, I'll post some pictures. :climber:
-
As promised...
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
It's got the cross + crossbow reverse tang stamp. What makes me say early 80s for this one is that there's no sewing eye in the awl, but there's also no beveled tip - it's pointy like the modern version. Also the "v" in "victorinox" is the same size as the other letters. If anyone has any thoughts/corrections about that please let me know.
I'm not carrying it today because of Spartan Challenge reasons but it's a pretty sweet SAK!
-
Marlowe, that's a good looking vintage Climber :tu: :tu:

Thanks! I've been on the lookout for a nice birth year SAK (1982 for me). Given how approximate putting a date on these things can be, I think this Climber is it!

Very nice Climber!! :salute:
Thanks! It cleaned up really nicely and I’m using a picture of it for my forum avatar.
The scissors are really loose but they are old enough to have the slotted screw connection so I should be able to tighten it up.
I also bought a modern Climber (used) during the Spartan Challenge. I plan to carry them both but I like the hook being there on the scissors back spring.

Stay Glow Climber has been retired but there are some still out there for sale. I prefer the model without the Boyscout emblem on it.

Thanks for answering :iagree:
-
FYI - you can get red climbers on sale at Amazon for $28. Deal was too good to pass up for me.
-
Picked this up on Ebay a few days ago...
I just saw this post. I was in Rothenburg last summer, and saw these in a store just down the street from where the picture on them is taken. I didn't know they had numbers on them, or would have got one. I got a Bavarian one instead.

It’s the SAK I always recommend to people for their first and often only SAK (the weirdo’s  )
-
Not my #1 favourite but right up there
I wouldn't call it my favorite SAK of all, but my favorite 91mm SAK
If i had to choose a "favorite of all" i'd have to go with the Small Tinker ;)
2 layer 84's, and 3 layer 91's are the ideals for me.
Now.... if Vic brought the Small Climber, Alumnus, or Salesman back, though.... that would awl change.... 😁

-
Thanks. :hatsoff:
I rarely carry a Climber, but when I do it's a small. I don't find myself using the scissors enough to justify the extra layer, so I more frequently carry a Sportsman or Tourist instead. The custom copper one above is the only 91mm Climber I have and I don't carry it.
-
Sometimes I may choose a Small over a 91mm...
If i had a small Climber i would always carry it over the 91mm, at least for the regular urban EDC.
I hardly see any advantage of the same models 91mm over the 84mm's.
If Vic would bring back the 84mm's with scissors i would only use the 91mm's for Camping or Outdoors stuff
My philosophy when it comes to blades is "the smaller the better", within reason of course... :D
-
*double post*
-
I know...SAK scizzors are probably some of the best but I hardly use them....
-
I actually began carrying a SAK because of the scissors. I'm a left hander and those scissors beat the smurf out of the green handled wonders available at the time.

In my head a small climber with LNF is maybe the ultimate urban EDC. The only advantage I have been able to notice with a 91 vs 84 is grip. With my meat hooks, the bigger the handle the easier some of the harder tasks are. 100mm is actually easiest for me to control in various cuts.
I darkened my tools and added ++ scales including a nail file on this one. [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ] [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

My original Climber and this flattened out roll of duct tape that jumped out of the drawer. Quite possibly one of my most carried SAK's.

Got to watch for those springing duct tapes. You are lucky it didn't go for your throat. Might as well post a Climber photo. Trumpet vine flowers are all gone now. Might be worth showing again. Best wishes. G

It just so happens I have my Climber in my pocket today. Not sure why, I actually don't carry a Climber terribly often. Just got a wild hair I suppose.
Also included - the way I carry duct tape. I carry just a few yards wrapped around an old library card.

Hello!
Am I welcome in the climber club?
The one on the left started my love for SAKs back in 2001 - 2003 when I found it on the school playground when I was in junior high. I dated it between 1992 and 2001 but I cannot be certain.
The one on the right is a 3.3703 Climber in nylon scales, gifted to me in 2014 by my girlfriend at the time (now she's my wife). As it has a tremendous sentimental value for me, it mostly stays in his original box.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
I also bought myself this year a Victorinox Altimeter 1.3705.AT which has been exhibited in a store since 2005. Does it count as a Climber? ::)
-
It has been a while since I posted a Climber photo. In fact I had forgotten that I ever posted one here. Those are some nice Climbers, Peski. I like the nylon scales on the right-hand one, too. Best wishes. Gary
;)

Thank you Gary! I also like the nylon scales very much. Feels more grippy in my hand. I am looking to buy another one, to replace the 1986 Ranger on my desk :D

Love the climber. That one looks like it has been used regularly. Seems to be black, but I could be wrong. Take them out and carry them, I say. Best wishes. G

Black, but it does look kinda brown, or purple, or whatever. My photography skills are nonexistent, I'm glad if I manage to get something in focus... The reason I went Alox is because the cellidor gets dented.

I didn't have to get out a shovel to dig out the Climber Club. I did have to take a broom to sweep off some of the leaves and dirt. How about a meeting of the Climbers for today? Best wishes. Gary
