Title: Buck 192 Vanguard
Post by: ThundahBeagle on January 20, 2019, 12:47:27 PM
How many others of us have a Buck 192 Vanguard? I searched and don't see many threads about them, but I do see some.

This model first showed up in the 1991 catalog for  availability in 1992. I happen to have here a 1992 version of this knife, the blade of which was made of a very sharp 425M steel up until 1994 when Buck switched to 420HC. The leather sheath is lighter colored than today's version and is not embossed like today's is. The rosewood handle (cocolobo dymondwood) is beautiful and features a nice palm swell to help keep the knife well positioned in hand. And being dymondwood, water will not affect it.

Nice brass finger guard and pommel help protect your hand while complimenting the rosewood nicely. It also allows this model to harken back to the Buck 110 and earlier hunter models, while still being constructed of newer materials.

The blade spine is robust, being about 3 and a half mm in thickness. These are also available with a rubberized handle, model 692.

A thanks goes out to Joe the Viet Nam vet, who sold this to me. Same guy I got my 1978 Buck 110 and Western from.

Anyway, here are a couple pics and an old copy of the 1991 catalog ad.

Also, the nice leather "wrap-around" sheath of this 1992 model is lighter tan that today's,  is not embossed like today's.

I've heard that the newer sheaths come with a plastic insert. This 1992 either did not come with one, or it is lost to time.

Perhaps someone with a newer model could confirm the plastic sheath insert?

Made a rather tasty beef stew with it to watch football earlier today. I may not want to baton wit the Vanguard, but it made short work of that Angus beef, I'll tell you that!

Although it is dymondwood, the palm swell helps keep it in the hand. Of course the finger guard helps as well. Oddly, there is that choil that's not really a choil...nice slicer, Nix. Perhaps not a baton knife, but if you skin or prepare meat and vegetables,  or make feather sticks, etc, this will do the he'll out of all of that and more
