Title: Titanium Pocket tool for your Keychain
Post by: dustin on June 18, 2014, 03:18:51 AM
Hey guys -

Made from grade 5 Titanium, the primary purpose of this tool is organize your keys and get them out of your pocket and away from your phone's screen.  It also has an indexed wrench and a small ruler for dealing with some of live's unexpected issues.  There is also the option of including Titanium mini-biners to help further organize your keys.  The mini-biners are great because they allow you to attach and remove keys from your ring with ease.  One additional option available is anodizing which adds color to the titanium.  Available colors are bronze, silver, yellow, purple, blue and green.

Those look really cool and useful, Dustin. :hatsoff:

And thank you for subscribing to our Crowd Funding program. The proper way to advertise. :2tu:

I've moved this thread to the Crowd Funding board manually for now (left a redirection link in the keychain and OPMT board) and added your badge until our tech guys figure out how to fix your account.

I really like the looks of that wrench dangler. :tu: Only the sizes you could turn with leverage of a tool this size, and most used one too.

Are you planing on doing a metric version also?

I've already ordered the mini-biner. Great price. I just hope there won't be any problems with fatigue - some titanium carabiners on Kickstarter have broken, may be a limit of titanium.

enki_ck: Thanks for adding this post to the crowdfunding section - some electron is fighting with another electron and I don't have privileges to post a new topic here yet.

I should have been more clear about the metric option - at the end of the kickstarter campaign, backers will be able to choose between a metric or imperial ruler.

AaronX: Designing a good spring for the mini-beiner required a lot of research and testing. We know which carabiners you are talking about and so it was definitely a concern. The advantage of titanium is that it does not fatigue like steel. This means that a good titanium spring should theoretically never wear out. Everything has a fail point, but we have several of these mini-biners in daily use and have not had any problems.

...

Will metric wrench sizes also be available?

The wrench set it combination of both metric and imperial. After going through a bunch of prototypes, we realized that equivalent types are within .25mm of each other. For the purposes of a pocket tool, this difference is small enough that it does not cause any problems.

I like this one...

To back up ISO vs. metric:

I used my Atwood Prybaby with ISO cutouts to tighten and loosen some metric bolts and nuts. It works OK if you use normal force. So normal tightening and unscrewing is OK, just use brute force, that would damage either bolt/nut or wrench...

For small sizes is perfectly OK to use ISO on metric in my experience.

Have a question. How much weigh can the mini-biner support? TIA

Would it hold a 1 litter nalgene water bottle?

Got my answer. Thanks.

Good question - Today, in the name of science we hung one of our team members from the ceiling of our shop with a mini-beaner. We can now say that it holds one Dustin unit (about 165lbs) without any ill effects. We're curious though how much more weight it can carry before it bends or breaks, so we will probably do some more testing.

For anyone else reading the thread;

The mini-beiner is not recommended for climbing, but yesterday we did a little testing. By the end of experiment I was dangling from the ceiling, and the mine-beiner holding me up did not show any signs of stress.

Today there will be more people at the shop and we will see just how much weight one of these little beauties can hold.

Wow! No bottle opener!  :o

Not that that's a bad thing ;)

I'm not sure how much better this would work than other keyring solutions, but I like the general shape and function on it, and that's really quite a lot of wrench sizes  :tu:

Too bad I barely need wrenches, and for just the dangling I don't think it's better than what I have already. I do really like those carabiner thingies, though :)

Wow! No bottle opener!  :o

Once we reached our initial goal we started working on a good bottle opener, and released it as a stretch goal. Since we are about to reach the goal, I'm guessing there will be a bottle opener.

What kind of dangler do you have now?

Not really a dangler, but for my keys I got another Kickstarter thingy... You can see it in this picture:

Also, I wanted to add that I do prefer the version without a bottle opener, personally. Looks a lot better, really.

Bottle Opener - Originally we didn't worry about a bottle opener because we hadn't figured out how to do it well... and already had several in our pockets. I think we came up with a non-invasive design though, and backers will be able to choose which version they want.

bmot - That is a cool dangler. I think the big difference is that we wanted to make something which easily hooks onto a belt loop. I imagine the one you shared works great for two or three keys, but I find that most people carry more than than this. I also like the fact that my pockets aren't quite as full as they used to be.

It carries my 4 keys quite comfortably, it's more a pocket clip for keys than a dangler, I suppose.

I do like your design, too,  :tu:  It's just not for me personally. I don't come across a lot of hex nuts/bolts. And, I prefer carrying my stuff a bit more solidly in my pocket, I was just being glad I finally got rid of my keyring for something more "in one piece".

I really like your carabiners, though ;)

Your Ti anodize colors look really nice.  Do you do this yourself?  Im just getting into Ti anodize and getting a good green is still eluding me.

Cheers

Thanks! We anodize everything ourselves... and it took a long time to get right.

Best tip I can give: cleanliness is next to greenliness

Its a sensitive process and the smallest amount of impurity will mess things up - especially the high colors like green.
