For a long time now I've used wood burning/hobo stoves, the one I have at the moment is the Ikea cutlery drainer version.
I've recently seen a lot of adverts for the "flat pack" version.
I'm tempted to invest in one as they look to be space & weight saving.
Has anyone any experience of these?

When i saw these things, I decided I'd like to try one, but I'm cheap, so I made my own from some old scrap metal in my garage, and a bit of elbow grease.
I pack mine in what used to be the back pocket of an old pair of jeans.

What I found was that they are pretty dirty. They soot up your cookwear. They're a little hard to keep going, because they create a lot of ash and garbage that's hard to clean out while the thing is going, so you end up with a really short cook time. Good enough to boil 2 cups of water, but don't expect any more.
I don't know the gauge of the metal I used, but I'm guessing it's 'tank armor'. It weighs about 7 oz. It packs nice and flat, though.
If I had to make this thing again, I'd make it maybe an inch taller to get better draft and more space in the burn chamber. I'm sure the commercial ones have better proportions.

nice job Lynn :like:
just to go off topic, been looking at the hobo stoves that kellykettle do for their burners wondering if i could make my own or is it worth the hassle for €11 . . .

Thread Killer! :twak:

Sorry Dave, nothing to add, but I am interested in hearing about these as well.
-
they seem practical. and different designs might offer some upsides. now i do wonder the benefit of such a stove vs some type of multifuel stove or a single fuel stove with having an option to just make a small fire but that probably comes down to available resources and laws (fire bans)

Big fan of my Emberlit Fireant, haven't had Lynn's issues at all. Can easily cook for a good long while, not too sooty, etc Works really well.

You're wish is my command. Sorry it's the only pic I have, when I'm cooking outdoors I usually have my hands too full for pics.

That emberlit looks the business is it worth the £40 odd?
-
pomsbz, what are the dimensions on that emberlit?

Um, dunno and it's in the car. Weirdly the manufacturer doesn't list the dimensions. From the best of my memory it's men's shirt pocket sized when in it's carry case. Wait a sec, I found an answer for this question on amazon answers at 5x3.5".

$35 on Amazon right now for the stainless steel version I have. I bought mine from the US via my dad who lives there.

£35.98 including postage

Amazon has a knock-off version of these from 'Lixada' for $19 if you want to try one for a smaller investment.

There's an even smaller one of these probably equivalent to the Emberlit fireant, but those seem too small, IMO.

Yup bought my cousin one from there. Not quite nice as the Emberlit but not far.

I've watched a number of videos on youtube about the Lixada (The larger one), and 1) it looks nice and 2) I think I know what's wrong with the stove I built.
-
what is wrong with the one you've built?

I think the entire problem is air flow. Not enough in from the bottom, and not enough space for it to funnel out the top, when a pot is on it.
-
you gonna modify it?
-
I wrecked a dremel bit on that thing already. I might get adventurous and add the vent holes on the bottom plate with the high-tech 'roofing-nail' tool. :D
And the top vent holes can probably be done with metal shears. So... maybe?
-
the experience so far has been that when you say maybe and a DIY project is in question you'll end up doing it

Thanks to this thread, I built ANOTHER folding stove.
Here's a thread to the build.

Among the best movies ever. Have fun storming the castle!
(The home made stove looks a little like a tiny castle, see?)
