Having talked with sparky and 50ft trad. I am up for hosting a meet here in Sheffield (ok my back garden to be precise). Thinking Easter weekend as that allows people to travel good Friday and sort there stuff out on the Monday. Anyway pics below show the garden which should be big enough for our needs but hopefully it wont be that cold. Leave your name below if interested.
Thanks
Mark

Although I will have the house to myself (kids and wife will be at the monster-in-laws) so some bedrooms will also be available.

Just talked to my neighbour. When they where digging out for there chicken and duck spaces, they found loads of old knife blades. This could turn into our own version of 'time team'
-
Baggsie first go on the 360 diggers >:D
-
Yep they throw them away because they where old and rusty! I think I can hear Tony crying from here.
-
:D
He'll be researching DIY metal detectors as we speak ... either that or a portable 415V electro magnet which'll instantly rip out anything magnetic buried up to 24" deep on a 8ft radius
-
What kind of knives are we talking about anyway? Billhooks? kitchen knives? pocket knives?
I can't think of any manufacturing that used to go off round you  so I wouldn't think it was that ... dunno though
-
Dont know. Best the guys could say was big knives. Not really there thing. Now get them talking about ducks and chickens and you will be there a long time.
Have you seen the pm I sent you al?

Not sure exactly what's going on family wise that weekend but would hope I could at least make it over for the Saturday.
-
I'm also chucking a couple of calls in to see if there might be something interesting to go and see/do if anyone is interested, as well as the usual eating, drinking, and playing with sharp and shiny stuff
.... still work in progress right now (tricky to get access to a lot of stuff with it being a bank holiday - some places have already been ruled out), will feed back if there's chance of anything that might take our fancy

I think there might be a few of us up for a good car boot sale. :tu:

Axes, Trees, Rust AND a Carboot :salute:
-
Guys, I've been speaking to Farmman a bit behind the scenes and I'm going to be giving him a hand helping out where necessary. We were both thinking it would be nice to offer something a little different to the proceedings, especially if anyone wishes to be here longer than a day, and here's what we have on offer so far.
Food, beer, sharp and shiny things, good people, giggles ....
These all go without saying for the Easter meet :D but I said it anyway :P
There is the potential for other stuff too, and really it's up to everyone how much or how little we want to do besides the obvious stuff above. Here's some of the options we may have available:
Car Boot Sale
Mark's our resident Tony :P and knows where and when the good boot sales are, so arranging that would not be a problem
Police and Fire Museum:
Originally one of the UK's first purpose built Police and Fire stations, but now apparently ...
The Museum is now the Worlds ONLY Fire & Police Museum's and it's Tower is the only still standing Fire Service Tower of it's type in the UK.
Exhibits include vehicles, equipment, reconstructions, history, and there's a crime section ... where I know there's knives >:D
Open Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday 11:00 - 17:00
£4.00 entry
Weston Park Museum & Millenium Gallaries:
Open 11:00 - 16:00 - Free entry
May well be something of interest (Weston Park is a good museum - never been to the other) - but probably not much re knives and tools
Kelham Island Industrial Museum:
A history of manufacturing including the Sheffield steel industry, the 12,000 horsepower River Don Engine (big scary bugger), a Bessemer Converter and the invention of mass produced steel, Grand Slam "Dambusters" Bomb aka Earthquake Bomb (heaviest ever produced), loads of interesting hand tools including a few old exhibition knives and loads of other stuff including:
POTENTIAL EXCLUSIVES :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
The Year Knife is held there under lock and key and is not on general display - primarily I believe for security reasons, and I have been told that we may be able to view this by appointment. Stan Shaw, Sheffields last remaining Little Mester may possibly be in attendance too, and available for discussion and to view some of his work - both completed and in process. This again may be by appointment only and I am awaiting full details. Stan is a octagenarian who still commands a 4 year waiting list for any of his knives, and was one of the few guys who did the whole spectrum of knifemaking - from forging, grinding, treating, assembly and finishing. All his components, blades, scissors even corkscrews are produced purely by hand, and the only powered machinery he uses is a polisher!!!
Open Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday 11:00 - 17:00
£4.00 entry ... but awaiting confirmation on the potential "extras"
Shepherd Wheel:
A Ye Olde waterwheel driven cutlery workshop, historically producing scythes and other "large blades". Earliest records of this workshop is a sales transaction (the workshop was already a fully operational site at this point) way back in the 1400's !!! It has just undergone a full refurbishment and it is officially planned for reopening later in the year back in full working order
POTENTIAL EXCLUSIVE: :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
There is the potential of being granted an exclusive preview of the workshop in operation before being opened back up to the general public. There may not be blade forging being carried out, but there would almost certainly be the opportunity to see the waterwheel and the internal grinding areas in action - powered of course by the refurbished wheel. Details to be confirmed if there is any interest
No Working Factory Visit :-[
Chances of visiting a working factory will be none, as obviously it is a Bank Holiday weekend and everyone will be closed.
I'm hoping to have a little more info tomorrow but that might just be revised contact details just in casewe do want to get a party together and follow up on any of these. I've got a couple of other ideas up my sleeve incase anybody wants to be "active".
Of course, if we all just want to sit around and chill - there's that option too :D :D :D
Feel free to shout up on anything that is or isn't of interest so I can start digging and finding out whose ribs I need to poke >:D or just closing the doors I've got my foot in :tu:
-
By the way ... I meant THIS year knife ...

... as I believe THIS year knife ....
... may already be on display
The Norfolk Knife ...
... will not be available to view as that and several other pieces are in a seperate location we will not have access to over the Easter weekend.
Wenger Giant ... eat your heart out!!

I love the idea of meeting Stan! :ahhh
Thanks for all the work you guys are putting in to this :salute:
-
car boot sales, museums, beer, good chat and multitools? Sounds perfect to me.
-
It would help us if we knew when folks would be here as well as who's planning on coming. I know it's early days yet, but when you know what days you'll be around, if you could update days and interests/preferences to the list it would help us try and see if and when anything should be booked in advance
Cheers :salute:

I reckon I could be around from Friday night to Sunday evening at the least. :)

I will fit in with everyone else. I of fancy kelham island. Car boots are on Sunday mornings and if you want the pick of stuff bloody early. As for when will the house be open well at the very least the side gate can be left open to access the back. More than likely if we split into groups keys can be sorted. I can trust you all right?

Not much interest on Shepherd Wheel thus far so I might let that topic fade out slightly tomorrow and pursue options at Kelham Island. I've had confirmation that Cutlers Hall is a no go Mark (can't remember if I mentioned that before  ) Shepherd Wheel is maybe a little out of the way anyway unless we start adding the Round Walk to the list :ahhh :ahhh :P
-
I'd come up Friday night but would have to leave Sunday afternoon at the latest. Beer, tools and Kelham island sounds good. Is that BBQ getting fired up

We'll arrange a special trip down Attercliffe for you mate :tu: It used to be brimming with steelworks, but there's a whole different industry down there these days :P

Just a little request, does anyone coming have these tools, Wingman or Sidekick, Crunch and an Octane :pok: would like to have a little look, I'll be bringing what I have :tu:

I have a crunch. Used it last night.

I don’t have much interest in Rugby so don’t arrange anything especially for me
I’m going to ask for permission to come for the four days ( I’m sure she will let me out )
I am not bothered about the carboot either way if it gets in the way of other plans :tu:
I will bring the bucket o Axes and some odds and ends, just ask if there’s anything you specifically want to see :salute:

Just had a phone call from Kelham Island with a few little updates ...
They have managed to have a word with Stan Shaw about whether he'll be around. Stan wasn't sure and is going to have a word with his missus to see if they are going away Easter weekend. If not, Stan will be in on Easter Monday (only). I'll find out next week
The 2,000+ blade Year knife is currently part of The Hawley Collection, and they've spoken to Ken Hawley for me. They are having a cabinet made to display the knife, and it will then go on general display. Till then it is kept hidden away under lock and key. If Ken was around we could go and see it under his supervision, but he wouldn't be in until Tuesday/Wednesday so that's off the cards unless the cabinet appears, and then it will be visible behind glass rather than up close and personal.
Shepherd Wheel looks like it should be open by Easter anyway (they hope) so we can choose to do that or not at the time without any prior booking.
It's all looking like things will be there or they won't - no prebooking involved (phew) which means we can do whatever we want, if and when we want to which makes life much easier :D I'll keep abreast of options nearer the time.
-
Cool fingers crossed on Stan. I only expected to see the knife through glass so fingers crossed for that too.
Thanks for the work you are putting into this Al.
-
No probs, it's only a few phonecalls :D
Current thoughts on options open to us:
Kelham Island looks like a goer - Monday if Stan's there, anytime if not
Shepherd Wheel could be nice as part of a fair weather walk. Hop on Round Sheffield Walk, past the Abbey through the woods down to Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, up to the old roundhouse at Ringinglow then up to follow the Porter through Whitely Woods to Shepherd Wheel. Ancient woodland (keep an eye on Tony :pok: ), a few historic sites, and plenty of watering holes on route too
Kelham Island, Police and Fire Museum, and Millenium Galleries could be combined, assuming we're going in a straight line after leaving the Fat Cat
Weston Park would prob be a trip on it's own if we did it
Magna is angled at families apparently ... I wouldn't bother with that for us
Castleton? Devils Arse? Car boot if anyone can be arsed getting up at the sparrows fart
There's tons of options to pick and choose from ... or we could just watch you slave over the BBQ and raid beers out of your fridge >:D >:D >:D
-
Well the wife has struck with the 'pay back' side to hosting this event namely tidying up one of the boundaries to our property. However I have looked on it as a chance to play. Tony hopefully there will be some left for you.

Ah yes the beer fridge. Unfortunately I fear it may be strangely empty when you all arrive, but that does give you all chance to fill it up.

Thanks mate. Tommorrow I get to play with my chainsaw. As much as anything just wanted to see if I could do it. Here is a pic of the full project.

BTW I was just watching Mark William's "Industrial Revelations" and realised that this is the engine at Kelham
River Don Engine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xORE5sA-T40#)
:tu:
-
That's the big one of the two ... but that was it running very slowly!!! It thunders along when they get it going, over 70 rpm and reverses direction to 70 RPM in the other direction in about two or three seconds I think it is. Try this vid instead ... you might need to turn the sound down
River Don Steam Engine, Kelham Island, Sheffield - Europe's largest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOBSfdBWSWY#)
As an aside I know I offered accommodation to a couple of people over Easter break, but I have to withdraw my offer (sorry). There's been developments in the last few hours which have kicked everything into turmoil this end for me. I'll still be at the meet - but I won't be living where I thought I would be :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
-
Sounds like my car :D Even has the same break squeal ::) ;)
-
Update on the wife's pay back project. 3/4 done now. Hopefully finish it next week.
Still left to go.
Tools used ( apart from an angle grinder, chainsaw and loppers).
Wife's Swisstool
Mora clipper
Hand axe.
Glad when it is finished now.
-
looks tops mate. :tu:
-
Just received a phone call from Kelham Island ...
Stan Shaw keeps forgetting to ask his missus what they're up to Easter Weekend ... and I suspect that whatever the "official" answer is they'll do whatever they feel like when they get up that morning, and who can blame them. This means that if we go on the Monday there is a possibility of seeing Mr Shaw - but not definite, the possibility of seeing a special item or two which is not on display if Mr Hawley is in (and be able to question him specifically on multitools - if there's any knowledge on them or items to be seen - he's the man), again not definite. River Don Engine will be running and is well worth seeing in the flesh as it were
On the Sunday there is apparently a Living History Tour at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet which is an 18th century development where scythes and were made by water power (forging and grinding). Looks like it might be a bit "family orientated" (a bit fluffy round the edges) but might mean the water wheels and tilt hammers etc get fired up. Don't expect to see any smelting taking place though - if we go you'll see why :D :D
Shepherd Wheel will be open Sat/Sun/Mon
Nothing needs pre-booking so we can pick and choose as much or as little as we want at the time
-
Thanks again for working on this for us chaps! :salute:
Are we bringing stuff for trading again?
Anyone want me to bring specific stuff to play with?
Wants list here or in a new thread?
:D
-
Last time I was at the hamlet, there was a guy putting an edge on some high end bush craft knives.
As for the trade idea I think we should if people have stuff. For me tony I would like to see your axes/ large bush knife.
-
I will bring more unneeded stuff to trade for new toys and I will be bringing my bucket of axes etc :tu:
Wants List;
Anything by Michael Morris
Al’s new bush knife that he hasn’t got yet :D
-

 You're subtle, I'll give you that  :D
I don't think I'll have much in the way of trade fodder  I think most of the unloved items have already gone. Of course if there's any tools anyone specifically wants to see ... that I actually own :pok: :P ... just let me know :tu:
Oh, hats off to Jeff for withdrawing a couple of tools from the trade forum in order to show 'em at the meet before relisting :D Nice one feller :salute:
-
I thought I would slip that in :D
-
I'm not sure I have much for trade either, but I'll see what I've got. I plan on bringing pretty much all my MT's etc anyway but if anyone has any specific requests then I'll make sure it doesn't get left behind. :)
-
Hey boys, can I just check in with you for some details please?
I'm trying to work out if this is doable or not.
Exactly what day(s) is this all happening, is my Ruby dog allowed to come and is there a good spot for my camper van assuming I still own it?!
Ta very much :D
-
The dates are the 6-9th April. I beleive some are coming for part and others all. Your dog is more than welcome I have a dog that will be around too. As for the spot for a camper van. The main field is my back garden which does not have access for cars. However I do have a driveway including a fairly secluded bit in front of the garage. Are we talking VW camper or motor home? The other option open to all are the spare bedrooms in the house as the wife and kids will be at the monster in laws.
-
Well, having a decent bed in the van or inside is cool with me - very cronky joints not really up to camping these days :(
The van is a long wheel base Boxer, so fairly big. But if we can make it, being indoors and taking the car would be my first choice! It would be Hedge Kid and myself, so a double would be needed or space for a nest that big!
Entirely up to you sir, as this is your home :)
-
I'll be bringing all me bits and bobs that I have left. I'd like a look at these tools if anyone has them, Leatherman Crunch, Wingman/Sidekick, PS4, Gerber Octane, Crucial, any Gerber with the saw/blade exchanger, Dime, Victorinox Cybertool, any model. I have two dogs but will be leaving them in safe hands, would be nice to bring them but they do like a long walk, so best to leave them. I'll be happy to sleep in the garden under me tarp, if that's okay, my little van has enough room to lie down in but I like me tarp :tu:
-
Chrissy pm sent. Jeff I have a crunch and a ps4. If you want to camp that is fine with me. As for the dogs. The attached pic shows how close the local park is. It is fine if you want to bring them. The option is yours.
-
Superb Mark, thank for all the info :D
Ruby is a good dog as the boy will attest, and she mostly wants her ball, cuddles and any spare noms!
-
I have a green light guys, Minty myself and Ms Ruby will be joining you :D
-
Excellent.

That bloody Sparky chap's causing me some agro with my debts so that I've got fun toys to show and share :( Those senior chaps are supposed to be a mentor and good influence for us young whippersnappers, but not that one :twak: ::) :P
I'll not bother with my axes this time if Tony's bringing his arsenal, so I'll bring some other stuff instead. I think Nuph was put out I didn't bring my Lightsaber last time, so that'll be on the list. I'll also bring my MT's, a few fixed blades and maybe a couple of slippies
Anything else people want to see in particular? (just in case it's at the dingy and I have to plan a trip over in advance) No mail from Travis yet Gareth, but fingers crossed :tu:
Farmman
What else do we need to bring?
Fire wood?
Folding chairs?
:salute:
Not long now :ahhh
BEER!!! SAUSAGES!!! SHARP THINGS!!! BEER!!
He's right though Mark, you need to start letting us know what's needed. How you fixed for wood? Is that big upright stuff up for grabs >:D Have you got any seasoned stuff or do I need to start putting some pallets to one side? Somebody intelligent (i.e. not me) needs to start the PM chain with all the insider info :pok: :pok:
-
They only keep me around so there's someone to blame
I don't have as many as last time (someone took a bunch home with them Al  )
Folding chairs? (I can bring two)
Wood?
Food?
-
I was just trying to save you petrol seen as you had to cart all that wood home with you, especially knowing how far you had to go :P Least I could do for you after you agreed to take that bloody horrible LM Pulse thing off me :D :D :D
Are they all secure this year mate, or does Mark need to act as goalie by his windows?
-
Its a bit of a lottery really..... Russian Axe Roulette :viking:
-
Ok tomorrow I will take pics of what is available from a wood point of view. There is at least one small tree which needs to come out but as you have seen in my pics above most have been used for the retaining fence I have erected. However if anyone has a manual chain saw it will be possible to harvest some of the larger branches from some of the bigger trees too. Chairs, we have 4 folders here. There are also 2 park bench type seats and a pub/ picnic table with bench seats attached. Food/ beer. I kind of thought people could bring this if they wish, however within a mile of my house there are at least three supermarkets not including the local coop and cheaper stores such as lidl. Cooking. As well as the bbqs, there is the kitchen although I know when I have camped before I have used my own camp stoves (part of the fun).
-
Ok this is the wood I have. Really depends how big a fire you want and for how long. We can dig a fire pit (I have permission) or go with the incinerator and or chimenea. I have not been to a meet before so i am unsure what to expect.(http://img.tapatalk.com/5284f8d7-3e97-53c0.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/5284f8d6-3ebf-4ede.jpg)

I hope all you guys have a great weekend, sadly i just realised im on my hols on the 9th and working friday night of that weekend so could not of come anyway :-\ hopefully one day ill make a meet :tu: you guys have fun :salute:
-
I can probably bring the Gf's BBQ but we will need a few bricks as its still a bit legless :-[ (I will pull it out from where its 'stored' at the weekend ;) )
@ Mark, That decking should burn well
@ Paul, One day Mate :tu:
-
Really would not bother with the BBQ mate. What I have here we catered for 90 guests at my friends CP celebration. As for the decking ...... The wife will hunt you down and hurt you and not in a good way either!

 I'm a little unsure what you're expecting too :D :D
Camp fire for four days, beer, food, friends, sharp things, giggles :tu: Looks like there's plenty of twiggy stuff there ... I reckon I ought to give the kelly kettle another outing
-
Rofl: yes the thin stuff is the brash from the stuff cut down for my retaining fence work. I suppose should anyone have some wood then I don't think there is such a thing as too much. I am trying to source some larger stuff to keep tony and you happy.
-
Good man :tu:
Brash is perfect for kelly kettle mate. It'll save you a fortune on boiling the kettle for 8 for four days
-
I really love your little aluminum friend Al :dd:
-
I really love your little aluminum friend Al :dd:
 I was ogling the stainless 10 pint (6 litre) version last night ... but £70 is out of my reach at the minute ... far too much other stuff coming in time for the meet to afford it :-[

I can bring my little Ikea bush stove thingy if anyone wants to try it out (probably worth £7 ;) )
-
This is all far too easy what with a kitchen :D
So, just bumping this up to say that I'm getting quite excited about it all now and are you all bring potential trade fodder? I've got a few small bits like sheaths etc, and one or two more pricy items. Hoping you will be doing the same :)
Always up for avoiding ebay fees and postage costs :tu:
-
Excitement is mounting here as well :ahhh
Hot an cold running water :tu: (I am such a girl :-[ )
Yes please Nuphoria
I was wondering if anyone wanted some electrical fittings like 'down lights', there's a watch I got from someone on here and all the rubbish I couldn't shift last year other small trades :D
-
If it is too easy then of cause you don't have to use these things. :-)
I hope everyone had now received my address? If not shout up.
Someone was asking how close to the Peak District the house is. Below picture was taken from my attic window and probably answers the question the best.(http://img.tapatalk.com/5284d571-8bbf-fe1c.jpg)
Looking forward to a good four days.
-
Ooh, that's nice and close.... lovely. If my legs aren't working very well, at least I can still see it :D
Let's hope the forecast picks back up again too as apparently it might snow in the next few days!
-
snow? Mark, we need a bigger fire. Did your good lady put a restriction on the fire pit or shall I try and borrow a 360 tracked digger? seriously though, I can get extra wood, but transpporting it is tricky for me at the mo. If anyone has car space over the weekend and doesn't mind a little trip out, I can get more in. Really looking forward to some chill time with you lot. Bugger all to trade, but looking forward to sharing beers and giggles
-
Well let's hope for non-wet weather and petrol in the pumps :)
Anyone want a wood grenade? Too heavy really to be worth selling due to the postage so if you'd have a use for it just ask.

That or there is always the sofas in the front room.

A friend has just brought some things around for the show and tell. The bayonet is first world war German. Bit rusty (Tony will like that).(http://img.tapatalk.com/5284eec6-467e-6730.jpg)

Full of lurgy ... again  and CRAZY busy at work, so can't go and pick up my order from the Staniforths / Scorpion Knives :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
Spoke to them earlier though, and they're going to get it sent to me at work tomorrow :mail:

Wouldn't blame you at all to be honest :D Wonder if Jeff is still going to sleep under his tarp? Some website saying the nights will be warmer after Wednesday, but others don't. Glad I booked a slot indoors early :P

I am more than happy to pick them up for you Mate >:D

Funnily enough, Mark made the same offer yesterday evening :D The package will be in hand tomorrow as will the final item I wanted to get hold of to try alongside it ... something I've considered trying a few times and finally taken the plunge. There'll be quite a few things to compare and play with come Friday ... a mix of traditional, modern, and just plain weird ... and that's just the guys using them  :D :D :D
-
Whatever the weather I am certain I have slept out in worse. This just isn't supposed to be that kind of trip though. :)
What are we all doing about food, fend for ourselves, group pot or takeaway's?

We have a couple of bods with special dietary requirements me thinks  There's a supermarket (well two actually) not far away, I'm up for takeaways but I know some might not be, or I don't mind doing a food run for day one till we decide what we want to do thereafter. So long as we don't take the proverbial with Mark's amenities, I'm happy to go with the flow.
I vote figure it out when we get there :P

Nice one feller :tu: :D :D :D

In fact ....
Farmman has copped for hosting costs, and the rest of you are getting a good kicking on petrol (particularly the Scottish contingent), while I've got off real easy. :-[ I don't mind getting a load of grub in or stocking up on libations or whatever. I suppose what I'm saying is I'd like to contribute something to share the burden as it were.
Or if we all want to go out for a bite to eat together one night ... it's my shout :tu:
:salute:

very good of you Al, but I don't think it necessary. Personally I'll travel quite far for a good pint and pleasant company. :D
-
I ought to do something to make up for the disappointment then
:D :D :D
-
How about laying in enough tea, coffee and sugar for the weekend? You could keep a lot of people very happy that way and would save everyone bringing their own. :)
-
I’m happy to go with the flow, things all even out in the end :)
-
Good call Gareth. If Mark has no objections I'll get us stocked up on the "basics" ;)

But really, I'm happy with the tea and coffee bit, sounds great :tu:
-
Hi all sorry not really been on top of this, bad week last week. However here now. Al yes of you can get tea, coffee that will help.
What will also help, would you all confirm the days you are coming and if possible give me a rough idea of time? That way I can make sure I am around and you are not sat outside. Food I really suggest taking a day at a time. Really just ensuring we have enough for that day and the next morning. I guess people will be going out to restock personal supplies (beer tobacco) most days. This will allow us to grab what fits best to the day. We may even decide to BBQ if we can keep the charcoal dry enough to cook.
Gareth sleeping in the front room is ok. People don't have to go in there as the kitchen and dining room are seperate.
-
I’m thinking I should be there at 11 or 12am ish on Fri if that fits in with your plans?
(can get there eariler if that suits you)
-
Sorry to hear you've had a rough week pal :-\ I'll grab the basics then (de-caf and standard) and taking the rest as it comes makes sense :salute: I'll be around whenever I need to be this weekend mate. I'll prob give you a call Thursday evening or Friday morning :tu:
If we are going to try and have a BBQ at some point, I'll make a phone call to see if it's possible to get some GOODIES (http://www.oslinc.co.uk/shop/Product_Details.asp?Sun46BWf1jST=&Product=42) in :D :D :D

I should be with you chaps later on Friday evening. About 9-9.30pm at a guess.

Will we be OK for parking? Just had a quick look on street view and trying to park on the roadside without blocking neighbours drives looks tricky :-\
-
Mark DID have a plan for that, but don't know if he managed to have a word with the right person yet (and I'd forgotten about it :-[ )
-
I think we'll be there early friday evening - this depends on how fast I recover from spending the last three days at my parents :ahhh
-

I have parking for 3 cars, my plan is to talk to the pub at the end of the road (mount pleasant, on darbyshire lane). They have a car park. Will call in and see them on Thursday. I think the worded that will happen is we will have to find two more spaces, which is not impossible.

OK, I feel even now
I'm going to take tomorrow off work and nip over to Lincolnshire to grab one of those gourmet BBQ packs ... and if one of the ostriches manages to squeeze one out today, we'll have a rather novel Easter egg too :D :D :D
Last time I got one it fed about 8 people :tu:
On a rather worrying side note ... my parcels I'm expecting today haven't landed yet :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
-
Tiny bit of snow here too.... nothing settling though.
I know I shall probably get twakked senseless for suggesting this, but is anyone thinking that postponing this couold be an option?
*ducks* :D
-
Nope! (obligatory beating) :twak: Been looking forward to this for too long already ... besides getting us all together for four days at another time could be very tricky
I am thinking another meet might be good later on in the year though ... maybe late August or early September time

No need to cancel from my point of view either.

Ug, me manly enough for little snow.

That's good, means I can get home on Monday

Little trip was successful: Various sausages and burgers and a couple of steaks, all a mix of kangaroo, wild boar, ostrich and venison ... and a decent sized ostrich egg too, all sitting round at Mark's :tu: We can't have us all being ordinary now can we :P
I'll get the coffee, tea and beer tomorrow morning (I'll grab decaf too)
Aside from that I've not got much sorted as regards my own gear, so I hope you lot are doing better than me :P Not that I really care, from this point in ... it's chillin' time :D :D :D
-
Well I've just finished packing my gear up, just need to load it in the car now. The plan is to try and get away early from work and beat the rush away from Edinburgh. One more shift at work and I'm on holiday for a week. :ahhh :D

Wow, this all sound great, adds to the adventure of meeting you all, new people and new food stuffs to try :D typical me not packed or sorted anything yet :P first thing I've got to do tomorrow is fix my rear exhaust box, darn bracket holding in on snapped ::)
-
Bucket-o-Axes sorted and too heavy to carry ::)
We will be able to hear you coming BW :salute:
-
I've found myself in a flap about what to bring.... not too much new and interesting but I decided to bring a few lighters I want to sell/trade. All petrol, mostly old and all working :)
-
Ok parking at the local pub sorted. It does mean we need to go in for a pint or two of an evening. I am sure we can work through that pain though.

Ordinary Pfffft! :D Even if we all made a concerted effort I'm not sure we could get anywhere close to ordinary!
I've got a jar of posh instant decaff in the cupboard that needs using up, I'll sling it in the food bag. Not sure if you were intending for real decaff or not.
Farmman - that's the best parking payment scheme I've ever come across :tu: :D
Looking forward to seeing you ramshackle lot tomorrow :)

Getting there.... :)
-
I just need to empty my lungs and sinuses (bloody lurgy  ) and I'm about ready to roll
-
I had a nose like a tap last weekend but it seems to have sorted its washer out now thank goodness :)
So am I best going straight to the pub and walking down? If my mental maths is correct they'll be no spaces left Saturday morning :)
Will I need a special Farmman pass on it to stop from getting towed? :D
I've nothing heavy to carry so no issues there.
-
I just need to empty my lungs and sinuses (bloody lurgy  ) and I'm about ready to roll
NO snogs for you young man :ahhh
-
Hi Neil
I have arranged for you to park in one of the neighbours drives as you are only here for the day.
Everyone else I suggest coming to the house, unloading and then those that are using the pub car park will need a pass which I have just finished printing off.
-
Thanks :tu:

What the price per litre of petrol like around south Sheffield at the moment? Just deciding where to fill up :)
-
I've only now just caught up on the last couple of pages of this... I imagine most of you are on the road by now, if not already there or just about to be. This looks like a great meetup, and a special prize goes off to anyone who can crack that ostrich egg raw and drink the contents! :pok:

well, tony's injuries are only minor and we need some silicone and milliput, but apart from that today was just a matter of getting here really. Badwolf has so far failed in respect that but we have our fingers crossed. Potential of ostrich egg for breakfast before breaking out the hacking tackle and letting the serious injuries commence. Chuckle muscles have been limbered up nicely this evening, and the next few days promise to be damn good fun. More updates later.
-
Tony's already been injured? I hope he silicone and milliput isn't for him!
What's happened to badwolf? Did Little Red Riding Hood get her revenge?

Maybe they met up and ran off somewhere. :P

I have to say, reading who all is going and what they are going to be doing there, this has to be one of the Meetups I am upset at missing the most- right after the Leatherman Factory Tour.
I can't wait to see more pics and hear more about what looks to be a really great time!

Well I landed safe and sound back in Edinburgh about half an hour ago. Had a fantastic time and want to say a huge  to Mark for giving us the run of his house and being very generous with the coffee maker. :tu:

We are all feeling left out. (and bloody jealous....)

Oh my gaaaawd.... we're all home safe but very tired! I shall attempt a brief rundown of events though :)
We mostly know each other from previous meet-ups, but it was great to meet a couple of new faces. HK and I got there on Friday with a few others, and by Saturday there were eight MTO members present.
No major injuries or wild mammalian attacks to report this year, just lots of fine company including of course our host Mark and some of his locals friends who dropped in (but weren't stopping even though they ended up there all Saturday night while we drank and had BBQ in the rain!). There's enough garden space to allow the now compulsory axe throwing and chopping madness that tends to occur at UK MTO meets. This also allowed for some fire related antics and various other outdoor nonsense. It's a great place to meet up, and being welcomed there was an honour :tu:
There was a little bit of trading this year, as usual Hedgekid and I came home with one of Tony's special choppers *snort*. As the economy is a pile of horse manure at the moment, there were understandably less new shinies being passed around, but as usual there were a few new things to play with between us. As we were in Sheffield, we went off on Sunday to Castleton which is about a half hour drive, and surrounded with beautiful landscape. We found a small antique shop where the rather eccentric owner managed to sell us a couple of decent used SAKs, and then preceded to make some of us partake in an unexpected karaoke performance of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On". I kid you not
I believe someone will arrive with photographic evidence of this later. He then came out of the shop after us and asked why the hell so many knife geeks were all together... we explained MTO :D
Monday, despite certain hangovers there were more outings made. HK and I hung out with Mark and tried to make his house not look like something his good lady wife would be cross about before we all started to head home in various directions.
I know I'm leaving out lots and I hope many pics from the others will help fill in the blanks.... I'm far too tired to make a great job of this I'm afraid ::)
Anyway, thanks everyone for making this another great MTO get together and especially to Mark to being a very good sport letting us crazies in to his home
-
Oh yes the singing really did happen. A very bizarre shopkeeper, but he did manage to sell us a couple of SAKs so the weird technique definitely worked. :D

Good round up by Chrissy :tu: I must admit I was too busy having fun to remember to take pics/vids for the most part. The weather was decidedly British, but that didn't dampen our spirits.
Sparky, nuphy and HK's spontaneous little musical number was a wonderfully surreal moment
I got to play with some newly shineys such as the Chris Caine Military Survival Tool, Anton DePlessis Warthog, Cold Steel Shovel, Traditional Leuku and Muela Jabali. Gareth was annoyingly brilliant (as always) with the shovel throwing. Sparky saved the day for me and Gareth today by enabling us to go out for the day without having to worry about breathalisers, lampposts and criminal records, and leave the aftermath clearance to the others :P
I've managed to leave with a couple of nice petrol lighters, a very nice torch, a Vic Skipper, a few kitchen knives (not liberated from Mark's house if anyone is wondering) and a few other little bits from trades and purchases. Sparky also played a major part in getting Farmman the makings together for a home forge. I disappeared from the BBQ merriment for a short time one evening whilst one of Mark's buddies beat seven bells out of my back (bloody hell, she knows what she's doing :o )
We managed to take in a trip into the countryside as Chrissy mentioned, plus some of us managed to get out to an industrial museum and a larger (much larger) antiques shop, but most of us managed to control out wallets at that one. It was good to meet badwolf ... even if Mark did manage to lock him out of the house all night    (Sorry Jeff, got to giggle at that one mate).
Tony proved himself once again as king of the sausages (despite HK's list of 80 suggestions for alternative uses - I particulary liked "a blow up doll for slugs") and also master of the goose egg. HK worked her culinary magic again with a fantastic spicy rice salad and Turkish courgettes (forgot to say HK, I managed to get some second time round, and it was bloody lovely :tu: ), and I just got the easy job of incinerating exotic animal flesh over hot coals. For those who haven't tried it before, ostrich egg tastes like .... egg! There was enough in it to provide us all a breakfast though, once we'd managed to get the darn thing open
:twak: :twak:
It was a great weekend with some great people. Much of it was just relaxing, giggling and putting the world to rights, but this last four days has FLOWN BY!! It was great to meet Jeff as well as all the guys I'd already had the pleasure of meeting before. Over to Mr Sparks now to see if we can find a way of making it happen again later in the year at an alternative venue.
Beer, fire, shineys, sharps, wine, tool tweaks, excursions, shopping, pub, cherry bakewell ice cream, the musical trio's twilight moment, power tools, metalwork, torches, cider, good food, good company, hangovers, and a very generous spoonful of mirth and merriment ... for those who couldn't make it, don't worry you didn't miss much :P
Just a shame I never got to use my sjambok or large feather duster

Ostrich egg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4OIlfkyezk#)
there are one or two smurfs in this so don't say you weren't warned. ;)

Wow ostrich eggs are tough.. maybe a power drill or a hammer and chisel is a good idea?

Wow, no wonder you never see ostrich eggs in a Cold Steel video!
That's one tough egg- you sure worked up an appetite cracking that one open!

BTW Tony, I love this pic. In a rare boastful moment I would also like to say that this was my first and only throw with the shovel and I got an excellent stick. 8) This is also know as "quitting while you're ahead". ;)

That was the rather eccentric shop owner. I have encountered this gentleman's store and eccentricities before (shhh, don't let the others know - but the reason for steering them there was more than just antiques ;) ) and whilst I expected some form of quirky behaviour this chap excelled himself that day :D :D :D
Regarding Q1 ..... we pretty much know as much as you do mate

Just like to thank Mark again for having us bunch of weirdos in his house :salute:
And thanks for the pressies, the food and coffee and of course the company
Like Chris mentioned earlier, there wasn't a huge number of new tools to play with this time but I think the nicest item I handled was Al's Chris Caine chopper survival tool.
It was nice to see a little Gerber Dime in the flesh. I think the price Gareth got it for was about right but its no way worth the UK RRP! Nice bottle opener :D
-
Well I had a blast. Enjoyed meeting everyone and best of all didn't have very far to travel at the end.
Thankyou to all that came, especially those that answered all my questions regarding modding saks and about flashlights both topics I know almost nothing about and realised I must have bored with quite easy questions.
Until next time

I never get bored of question a bout things I like :D
I'm keeping my eye out for a nice AA light for you too.... something will turn up that fits the bill.

Just getting caught up here on last weekend's meet, looks like a fun time was had by all  Sure do wish I could have been there too :) I've got plenty of questions, but the most important one is Who is to blame for not getting a video of this moment?! >:( :D :D

Sorry Bob. :-[ In fairness though it did happen awfully fast and I wasn't entirely sure I hadn't been seriously hallucinating. ;)

Well, at least you managed to snap a still for us Gareth, so all is forgiven. :D
So, surely there are some more photos to be shared of this epic gathering of MTorgers...? :pok: :pok: :)

I know Al got some video, however I think he is quite busy moving house at the moment

I'm kicking myself for not taking any pics  can't believe I didn't, not even one of an mt stuck in a log   oh well, next time. Did have a good play with lots of tools, such as a Logger head tool, Swiss tool, Buck Extract, LM Super Tool 200 and 300, Gerber Octane, Fit and Dime, wow that's smaller than I thought, variety of SAK's, gorgeous Spyderco UKPK rescaled in iron wood  very nice titanium slip joint knife and a LM Crunch :tu: very pleased I went and met fellow members and played with some great tools, saved me lots on what to buy next, thanks all :D
