It’s got nothing to do with the WD40 he’s using. It’s due to the fact that the white washer is now a bigger diameter then it used to be and actually sticks out further then the lock face of the blade. So basically if the lock bar travels the full distance of the lock face the lock bar will take a small chunk out of the washer. Over time the washer will rotate round giving the appearance it’s been nibbled at.

Anyone got an old and new skeletool to confirm this ?

From what I remember, that white washer (i dun know what material is that but it's ultra smooth) can tear. The original pivot hole is very tiny and it a cut out that matches the screw (male), so it's spinning on the screw's thread. So it can cut and wear over time. And, if over tighten, it can get caught on the pivot post and the screw itself. Over prolong use like that, the pivot hole will tear into a size equal of the pivot post but sitting in the position for the screw's thread... It's not sitting in the correct place anymore.. I know my explanation is confusing... I am confusing myself so I am going to give up explaining... :think: :ahhh :poh: Pics coming soon.
Dunc, what you observed is correct. Mine is tearing and soon its going to be a over sized washer not sitting in the correct diameter screw.

Talk about a bad problem :facepalm: Sorry to all the guys that have Skeletools with this type problem :ahhh Warranty is not always an option for everyone and this sucks :-\

I've got the CX with the bronze washer. If I was using the older Skeletol I'd switch out that white washer for a bronze pronto.

I think the CX have the white washer also... The bronze one is below the blade, white one on top between the blade and screw. I could be wrong though..

I wonder if my first production regular Skeletool has the bronze or plastic washer :think: I will check this evening if I remember :salute:

Bronze washer on my at least 3 year old standard partially serrated model. I do believe it might be a bit older than 3 years old. Our Tractor Supply never seems to move Skeletools. And they stopped selling them quite some time ago.
CRKT uses bronze washers on entry-level models, like the M-16 EDC (which is $20). So, why go to nylon on a $60 tool? I've tore them before. I was replacing the clip on my SOG Kilowatt (clip attaches by means of the pivot and screw), and was having trouble getting everything aligned back together. In the struggle, I absolutely wrecked the nylon washers. They're junk. Anyone know of a good source for bronze washers?

All sleletools have one bronze washer and one white plastic washer.
The problem here is the liner lock bar is cutting into the white washer

Some Skeletools must have 100% lockup :dunno:
There's no way the lockbar on my CX could tear that washer.

Your lock bar doesn’t travel the full face of the blade, also you can even see your was in the photo, is it an older model ?

Steve your plastic washer definitely looks smaller in diameter then the newer ones.

I don't have a Skeletool, but I wonder if any other LM tool was fitted with nylon/teflon washers?

Both. And I have the original first run CX. Small brass one between blade and frame and big plastic/rubbery one between blade and screw.

This is the condition of the plastic washer on my heavily used original first run Seletool CX bought in 2008 (I switched the combo blade to a PE one some years ago) .... so no, the bigger diameter of the plastic washer is not a problem and won't become a problem with use. :salute:

This is the 3rd skeletool I’ve seen like this , all were 2018 dated

Looks like they are grinding too much off of the back of the blade tang which results in the lockbar being too far over :think:

Ok, I see it now. Wow, new blades shouldn't have 100% lockup. Not even close. :/ Heck, my 11 year old much carried, much used, much played with blade locks up at about 60/70%.

Lockup shouldn't be 100% on a new one especially :-\ that way it gives a bit of a wear in period :think:
