Title: My Modified Gerber Shard
Post by: Gadget Guy on April 22, 2015, 01:29:53 AM
I've been wanting to modify a Gerber Shard for a long time now but I never got around to it. I never really cared for the phillips screwdriver on the end, at least for keychain carry anyway. I spent about 10 minutes out in my shop and I'm happy with my little creation.  :D  I gave it a simple brushed finish and left a little of the original black finish on for some character.   :tu:  Kind of hard to get a good picture for some reason.

Anyway, here she is:

Awesome job John!  That's the only way I'll carry a shard.  Love it, but that pointy phillips can't stay on for me!

Thanks!  I totally agree... The Shard is great as is if you want to just throw it in your pocket, but like you said, that phillips just doesn't fly on a keychain.

It's funny how times change. In 2006 I had one of the best Atwood collections around, including 8 Damascus pieces and very rare one off's. Peter used to make me whatever I wanted. Now I'm carrying a Gerber Shard.

With the Atwood collection I assume?  I just didn't need all those tools. No matter how cool there were, I just couldn't justify having a bunch of keychain tools sitting in a drawer. I'm not a true collector, I use almost everything that I buy. Right around 2007 the Atwood collectors came out of the woodwork. Here is a funny story... Peter had a piece of scrap laying on the shop floor. He made a little tool out of it and gave it to me. I in turn gave the piece to a girl who said she wanted to start an Atwood collection. She turned around and sold the piece for $700, no joke!!!  >:(   She never said a word about it. Oh well... live and learn.   :D

Cool mod. although the Phillips screwdriver is something that for me personally completes the Shard as one the smallest, cheapest and most useful one-piece mini key chain multi-tools.

I own the gen in Ti Nitride coat but since sourced few replicas for about $2 each and modded them to fit and finish of the original.

It's really hard to tell the Shard I did in stone-wash finish below, is actually a fake.

Great work. I never did like the philips on the Shard as it made it very uncomfortable and weird on a key chain.

Where did you find the fakes for $2?

Adjusted for inflation:

I got mine 2 years ago when they were $2.50 each or $2 each if bought as a set of 3 or more pieces.

Hope this helps.

I have to laugh at Gerber getting ripped off with the fakes since they stole the basic design from Peter Atwood. I hope everyone buys the fakes... What comes around goes around and everyone seems to be OK with people stealing as long as the tools are cheap. I've said it before, I feel sorry for anyone who has a great idea. Why present it to the public when it will be stolen from a company in China and everyone will be OK with it.   :-\

I did the same to my Shard yesterday.  Found that the phillips driver kept catching in my pockets so hacksawed the tip off and ground it down to a smooth radius.
