Title: Polishing nylon scales?
Post by: ghiekorg on October 05, 2018, 11:32:47 PM
Hi everyone
I have a waiter with white nylon branded scales. I really like it. Today, looking at it, I was thinking “would it look nicer without the logo? And with glossy scales?”.
So my question is:
Is it possible to remove the brand leaving the nice texture of the nylon scales? I am afraid to not be able to have the same texture after removing the logo.
Is it possible to polish the nylon to make them glossy like celidor?
Thank you everyone

Why would you want to remove the logo  ???   Although the nylon logos do wear out eventually

Not sure about polishing - I would guess it wouldn't work - But I'm sure someone here has tried it !

Best idea is just to try it!! Ideally on a spare - else on the bottom scale - What could go wrong?

I tried it.
Slow and steadily.

There is a little difference in the surface where the logo was. But this is only slightly visible under certain lighting conditions.

Mirror polish? I highly doubt it ;)

Polish? No.

I find if I rum them down a little with 800grit sand paper, they get a super grippy surface when wet- comparable but very different feeling from wet micarta. Which is why I wish they made nylon plus scales.

Nylon will smooth out over time. About the time the logo wears off they should be rather smooth with a dull sheen. Polished- No. I've never seen white nylon, only black, red, blue and yellow.

'The mirror polish on SAK's is a sort of trademark for Vic. If Vic could get nylon to have the same degree of polish as it does with the cellidors, Vic would change to nylon at once. Unfortunately the surface structure of nylon can not be made as smooth as cellidor.
I have to admit I like nylon more than cellidor. The gripping and feeling is better, and the rougher surface/texture last longer than the smooth and shiny surface of cellidor.

Thank you everyone. It is was a thought driven more by curiosity then need. Maybe i will try something on some old and not nice nylon scale. I don't wanna ruin the only white i have :)
Some days ago i bought i 111mm with a name written on the back scale, maybe i will try to remove it even though it's already half gone)
Cheers
