Title: February 2019 spending spree challenge
Post by: FolderBeholder on January 06, 2019, 05:14:43 PM
I'm wondering if there is any interest in a February 28-day spending spree challenge.
You would have to buy at least one Victorinox/Wenger item per day.  :mail:

I think I could do it, anyone else interested?  My hope is that it wouldn't be too much of a burden, although it may hurt the budget.
I figure if it gets too expensive, I could buy a lanyard or toothpick for a few days to offset so much buying.  :dunno:

At least this is the shortest month of the year.

Anyone on board or plan to watch?

If you locate Classics at $10 each for 28 days you will have spent $280.  Not including taxes, shipping/handling cost, or gas and car expenses if acquire locally.

Then if you purchase more than one on a given day, that is still only one days buy.

Likely need a picture of purchase and receipt to qualify. 28 separate purchases is not the MTo way.

I will watch from the sidelines  If you decide to continue

These last two months have been a spending spree challenge for me, or so it seems ...  :ahhh

I guess it's quite obvious that I'm out, but I will watch others go for it  :D.

Meanwhile, I will wait until the participants start selling their "spending spree" goodies during their "March 2019 in dire need of cash challenge" .

After reading all of the replies I am thinking this should probably have a dunce cap badge if completed.   :twak:
But in my defense, if I were to buy right, maybe I would get some gems and sell off the unwanted ones that were purchased to make a profit.  :dunno:

How about "buy a SAK every day for a year?".

I'd join but I've already bought waaaaaaay too many knives last year (more than a year's worth). Also, I've vowed to concentrate on exceptional pieces and I don't see a way to find that every single day for a month straight :D

Good luck though, I'll be curious about what you purchase (and the total amount spent )
Title: Re: February 2019 spending spree challenge
Post by: cody6268 on January 07, 2019, 02:19:05 AM
With my budget, that would probably equate to going to the local knife store each day and buying one toothpick, tweezer, pen, etc. And even that would still add up to nearly my monthly hobby budget at $1.50 a piece.

Hmm.  Let me weigh my options here.  I could buy a new SAK every day for a month or I can pay my mortgage and utility bills. Boy, that's a tough one.

It seemed like a good idea when I thought of it.
Ya'll got me running scared, but I think I'm going to soldier on and give it a try.  I've been saving up some money, so I have a small SAK fund that should cover this experiment.
I just hope there are nice options to buy when the time comes.

I will start this challenge on the 1st of February.
I've had some time to think about this  and I'm not sure how many consecutive days it will go as I want to be sure I find a suitable candidate each day for purchase and not just buy anything to keep the challenge going.
I will look in earnest each day and it would be great if 28 items catch my eye (it could happen). :climber:

I like this level of commitment! But I like buying ones that each make me happy in some way. A lot of auctions I track from favorite sellers get all bunched up on different days of the week.  I'd have to have a LOT of buy-it-now items in the cue for days that either nothing good showed up, or ended that day. And oh, the horror if you lost an auction...  :ahhh on Feb 27!  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Good luck, and I'll enjoy this one from the sidelines!

Victorinox nail clippers for about $8 should help with the budget, maybe spread out into the cutlery dept and get a paring knife? Just giving some suggestions cause this sounds like it could drain your wallet if your set on completing challenge and lose an auction and need a quickie Vic so you don't overpay on something.

Have you been hired by Victorinox to get fans all ginned up to boost Q1 sales or something?

More power to ya, but I'll just be watching.

Worst case scenario, head over to Def's get em before they go to Ebay thread. You didn't say they have to be new.

Between Def's sales thread and Lynn LeFay's cheapo depot reviews, in a pinch, many could be got for less money than the price of a trip to Dunkin Donuts. Certainly Starbucks

Day 4 - I bought the one shown below today.
I like MiniChamps (they're big Vagabonds to me  :D ) and this one caught my eye as I haven't seen a black scaled one.  Plus it seems it has an LED, so the Midnite version.
I thought it might be a scale switch, but then I can't see any reference to black cellidor w/LED in the SAKWiki.  But then maybe it isn't an LED version.

Pretty sure that is a Midnite Minichamp, there is no place for tweezers and the shield is the light switch. I think the black ones had the red LED, but it could be white if it's newer. Good one!  :like:

That red shield was the first thing that caught my eye and made me think it does have an LED.  You're right, the one I did find had the red LED.

Thank you RR and Wspeed.
I found one that is similar on an ended auction.  It has a red LED and L.L. Bean on the other scale....so when it arrives I'll know if it is one of those.

I think that's exactly what it is. I have a user just like that red LED/LL Bean. Nice to see such a clean copy.  I don't think I've seen a black scaled MMC with the newer, white lites.  I do know that there are some white lites in the old scale style without the swinging battery door.

Nice find either way!  :like:

Holy smokes!

It's day 6 and I'm looking for today's purchase.  I bought 3 SAKs yesterday.  Two from Def's sale and one Vagabond on eBay.  Just love those Vagabonds.

Thanks Vicman!  I should have made it a one week challenge, that's doable, two weeks will be interesting to see if I can stay the course.

Stay the course, FB!  Forget the pens and toothpicks!

Just checked...looks like I'd still be in:

I know it's day 8, but day 7 had some extras.
I bought these two items as well as the Wenger Camo.

:like:
Mystery solved.  Dim red LED.  It doesn't have LL Bean on the back.  It's even in the wrong box.  Box is for a regular MiniChamp II.

It's day 9 and I didn't buy anything on day 8.
I started watching some television last night, fell asleep, and didn't wake up until 1:04 a.m. on day 9.
My first thought was nooooooooooo!  Then my next thought was, okay, that's a little bit of a relief (financially and emotionally).

So, my record was 7 days.  I did find a few I really like.  I was only able to mark off one from my want to buy list, a SwissCard Nailcare.

My favorite purchase was this one:

So what does a 7 day shopping spree cost?  I just totaled it up.  $413.88    :o    :ahhh
At that rate, I was heading towards a monthly total of (if the trend continued): $1,655.52

Nice Nespresso, FB!

Technically, still 'in' for the challenge...but no auctions closing tomorrow that I'm really watching, so I'd probably have to go to a buy-it-now/wishlist type item to stay in...

4 buys today so far and I could have just milked it by paying for one tomorrow. I figured that wouldn't be in the spirit of the challenge as issued.

Nah, I'm only 'in' because my bar for buying is much much lower!  About half of what I've bought in Feb are for serious repair or fodder of some sort.

I did get a NIB '76 Explorer today, but that's one off the better ones.

I just bought another security blanket!
I didn't think I'd ever find another mint-in-box one and I worried that my current one would show wear and now I don't have to worry.  I can continue to carry my most sentimental one knowing a mint one is in the collection.
It's just a silly collecting idiosyncrasy that I have.

Stay the course, FB!  Forget the pens and toothpicks!

Might have to ignore my own advice...

https://tortoisegear.com/product/firefly-variety-8-pack/
(https://tortoisegear.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Variety8pkMIX.jpg)

Not toothpick or tweezers, but still just an accessory, and not an official SAK brand.

We'll see about tonight. Heavy day yesterday, but not much of interest to me up for bidding today.

Lost two auctions that I was really going after this afternoon...so I would've been out or needed to get a buy-it-now item.

I think I need to get off this train!

Trying some restraint today. A seller accepted my offer this morning and I've passed up on the rest for the day.  Did get some Cybertool bits and Vic oil just now, but that stuff certainly doesn't count, IMO.

That's pretty good progress!  I only own 3 of the items on your list...and also have 9 in common on my buy list. And 2 of those are somewhat permanently on the buy list regardless of the copies I own. Crossed off a few of the big ones during this challenge.  One 'high priority' and fortunately low cost item.

I'm still in so far.  Gonna have trouble buying tomorrow as it'll be a busy day...

...

Speaking of Ambassadors, I do want to find a mint one of these:

That's pretty good progress!
Thank you.  Seems I am adding ones that are not on my list at a higher rate.
Bought this one last night.  I seem to like some of the Boy Scout versions ever since the BSA Yeoman.

BSAs are cool.  I got my first during this Challenge...and a glowing one to boot. I keep missing out on stainless+boxed ones I've bid on in the past.

I'm still in, but under a bit of pressure for tomorrow. Nothing I really want or need...might tap the buy-it-now stuff to stay 'in'. Maybe I'll shop late tonight if I don't pass out. I've been on the road for 3 1/2 hours today r/t. and just glad I had time to get the ones I wanted today.

As of today I've purchased 30 SAKs this month, just not one a day.

Lessons learned:

1) Don't try and make a purchase happen, it puts on stress that makes the joy of the hobby not as fun.
2) Some SAKs are going to rarely, if ever, show up for sale.
3) It's too hard on the budget.
4) One positive note is it made me try very hard to find worthy candidates.  I thought if I have to buy one it better be something I really want.
5) You all knew this before I even started, if I just would have listened.

Since I blew the challenge, I thought I'd wrap up with my thoughts.

My favorite purchase for February so far has been:

I know it's a day early, but the final count is probably in and there are invoices that will be generated for me to pay tomorrow for the official close of the month.

And the final purchase count is 50. Not including multiple knife listings. Most are targeting only 1 knife anyway, with the exception of one today where I do want all the knives in the auction.

Just glad it's essentially DONE! Tomorrow's purchases will be the formal closing. But this is the first day in a loooooong while that I don't actually have any outstanding bids or offers. Although there are still some things that might be purchased late tomorrow. I'll add them to the official tally if I get any of those.

 Thanks, VICMAN!  I'm happy to be done. Doing it was more stressful than I thought!

I do have to revise the final count to 49. I bought something else late and had to buy two of the items I was waiting for an invoice separately. The invoice for the remaining two hasn't come in yet. Count is 51 if those are included. I just won't have a confirmation email on them and that's what I've been using for the official tally.

My final ineligible count is 42 items.  A couple of rows have multiples.

Crazy dedication.  ;) Thanks for making February a fun month!   :salute:

Staying in really only required commitment for a few days. I went through January with purchases every day as a normal course, but mostly for stuff to repair or mod fodder.

Still drooling over that 'drawer' find of yours!  I'll learn to collect like you someday...  :)  :hatsoff:

This is the closest existing Challenge that I think would apply:

What do you think FB? Maybe if we start a new thread and show 30 of this month's purchases, we'd both qualify for that.
