Title: Strange Pliers, What are they used for?
Post by: yourbadneighbor on December 07, 2016, 07:01:08 AM
I bought this strange pair of pliers for a whole $1.10 today.  Love the duck bill style jaws,  but what is the use of this shape jaw? I remember seeing this style in the past and talking with someone about them.

All the dental pliers I have seen in the past have had rounded end tips to grip around the tooth,  made that way because flat blades put too much pressure at the high points of the tooth causing it to shatter.

I messaged Bob and he replied he has not seen that style of plier.
So we still have a mystery tool.

If you saw this style before, it could be custom made plier for a special task, as assembly, or die making, manufacturing in your local area.
It does not have a manufacturer mark, handles not finished, just fitted with grips.

I worked for Burroughs Corp at the transition time from mechanical accounting machines to computers.
I was outfitted with no less than a dozen special pliers about the same size and finish, without grips and also no markings.
Some were for tightening rivers on slides, bending over or under tangs on slides without bending the main spline.   But each served a unique purpose and I never adapted them for the newer gear.

Ask around your area, some one way remember using the tool and why.

Welcome and best of luck. I will be expecting a update some time done the road.

I thank everyone for taking a look,  I still do not believe it is anything suggested,  unless it is specialized.  The last pair I saw was a long time ago in California,  my dad had  a pair,  I then found them in Missouri.  They were made in Taiwan actually,  the mark came off while I was using wire brush to clean them up.
They are very solid,  tight joints & well aligned.
I will let everyone know what I find out about the Mystery Pliers.

It looks like you were on the right track!
They are for working with breaking glass along the scoring lines when cutting special pieces.
If you want to learn about these
Multiple plier types and use explanation,  it starts at around 5:00 in or for this type only, start at 8.56 min into the video link.

I learned about 3 other specialty pliers.

I love the curve jaw still and am using it for working on many jobs.  Very sturdy, comfortable and precise.
Thanks,  it was driving me batty.
