Title: UK Meet 2017: 11th - 13th August
Post by: Smashie on March 04, 2017, 11:35:39 PM
Ok time to start talking about the chicken and lard festival, sorry meeting of axe wielding loonies. No that's still not right, Ok got it, the UK meet.

I'm going to propose any 3 day weekend (that's Friday, Saturday and Sunday) in June, July or August.

Now the venue, I still propose the one we've used for many years for a few reasons:

1. No other venue would let us get away with what we do.
2. It's inexpensive
3. The shower now works
4. I mean seriously where else could we get away with the axes, the thowing of said axes, the insane fires and the shooting?

Availability for me is any weekend (meaning 3 days) except the 9th of June, that's my boys birthday. Stop me going at you peril lol.

With A bit of planning I can collect two of the regulars.

Comments below in an orderly fashion please (I know this is MTO and that doesn't always work!)

Lol unfortunately my landie doesn't get into any of the cars parks at Heathrow or Gatwick, it's under their advertised height limit, but they set the bars lower than that as I found out earlier this year when I took the paint off my roof rack and destroyed one of their lights. They did end up paying for my roof rack to be repainted though after a bit of arguing and them sending someone over to measure the car.

It would be good if others could come to the UK meet, we're not all as bad as others seem to think

That sounds like a pain in the arse.  I barely fit in most underground car parks, and it's always a bit puckering when I go under the bar.

Of course I have all but destroyed my CB antenna banging it off pipes, lights and signs.

It may still be available - I know he was planning to sell it, and I haven't seen him since before Christmas (he left the company) but I do need to get in touch with him soon so I'll ask.  It's only an hour north of the usual venue so may not make much of a difference to your drive down.

I'd very much like to come along if I'm still welcome.

Why wouldn't you be?

And if not, is there video of the incident that made you not welcome?  I think I'd love to see that!  :D

And I'm bringing a sword this year. A Norman Sword, or Norman the Sword as we call him round our way. I am hoping to do some real life SAK Knighting of club members.  :D

Most swords have a thing called a handle- it's best to hold that part, then you don't injure yourself  :D I named mine along the same lines: Norman. Poor Norman. He was an efficient postman. RIP.

Mine got a hooked crossguard... injured myself with that, not the blade. Rookie mistake, but the sword is with me for now 10 years.

I'd definitely like to come to the meet, if even for a day.  I'll decide just before the meet and see how my back is at the time.

I'll check my camping gear to be ready though.

Daystate MK3 FTR, though I've taken the muzzle flip compensator off and put a standard MK3 end on so I could fit the air stream suppressor.

I'll dig out my big harris bipod that I have somewhere (I think). It has really long legs that allows you to sit in a chair and shoot with it. Great for sitting in a barn and ratting with catfood/peanut butter mix at the other end of the barn, and perfect for us to have a chilled out shoot with it.

Remembered I gave my tent away last year, so looking round for something to sleep in at the meet, I have decided to try out my Zeltbahn. I have two of them that make up two ponchos or button together to make a tent. They come in a bag with poles, guys and pegs so I'll give it a go.
It's going to be pretty basic so I'm praying for warm, dry weather.

For those youngsters here who have not been in the army, these two part tents are really not that brilliant.

You first need to find someone else, with the other half, so as to have a complete tent (so, if it is 11 of you, you will have a problem.

Then, there is no floor, so you need to dig a ditch (or pile some earth) around the tent, so any running rain water will not flow into the tent. This of course does not stop the various animals/insects from wandering in, from under your tent.  Even if you put plastic sheets on the ground you can not seal the tent.

In addition to that, they tend to be very short, so if you are over 6 feet, your head/feet will stick out of the tent.

During the night, if you touch any of the two supporting poles (and you will, as the space is minimal) the tent will fall on you.

Because of the material they are made from, basically fabric, they are not really waterproof, and if you touch the roof, whilst it is raining, the water will start coming in from that point. you can cover it with nylon, but the water will find a way to come in.

Now, since there is no floor, your weight can not be used to support the tent when it is windy, so it may fly away.

My suggestion is to also take a small, modern tent (something light) as a backup, in case the excitement wears off realy quickly [/li][/list]

Thanks for your concerns dks - you obviously speak from experience and I will take on board what you've said.

I am considerably less than 6ft tall, so will fit in the tent fine (especially as I'll probably be curled up in the fetal position after watching Sparky's nudie rusty chisel dance).

This is the perfect time to test it because no matter how hard I try, my wife and daughter don't seem at all interested in spending the night under the stars in a dodgy length of insubstantial material.

Thanks again for your concern. Maybe it would put your mind at rest if you gave me your phone number and if I'm scared/wet/trapped in sopping canvas, I can ring you for help.  :D

    So what stops the badgers from getting in and biting you in the night when it's dark?   :ahhh

Oh, I see what's happened: Fake Gareth has kidnapped real Gareth and imprisoned him in 'Backwards Land'.

In an attempt to highlight his plight and enlist our help he has taken possession of dks's body (probably the most likely one of us to allow and even enjoy letting that happen  :D).

I suggest we form a posse to travel to Backwards land and save our friend. Unless he and dks are happy with their new arrangement, in which case we congratulate them and continue our courageous derailing of this thread.

I was over at Al's yesterday and we got talking about the meet. I have a big hexaganol day tent that I was planning on bringing in case it rained so we all had somewhere to sit out of the rain. The tent is called the royal summerhouse and is about 4.5m across the hexagon flats. It can seat all of us easily and leave room in the middle for a table.

Shall I bring it?

I'm not tarping or bivvying, I'm going full on comfy camping.  Tent I can stand up in, sewn in groundsheet, the works.  None of this will block out my snoring though  :D

This is what I use, though I won't be bringing the porch section.

So as not to keep hijacking Smashie's thread in the break room, I'll be bringing my air rifle, old pistol crossbow with bolts, and ye olde black widow catapult with 8mm nuts for ammo. The odd shape and hole in the middle makes it more interesting. Anyone can fire a ball bearing straight(ish)  :D

Is that sufficient to contribute the entertainment items?

I know its a month away but I like to plan

Not far at all, they are 6 1/2" crossbow bolts and only went 3/8" into the wood. It was a piece of old dry plywood in my garden and was a lot harder than I anticipated. The first shot I tried I was stood very close and it bounced back at me and I nearly found out adrenalin can be brown and lumpy. Scared the smurf out of me

Damn shame that Gareth  :( Hopefully we can sort something else out at some point  Totally understandable though, especially considering the distances that you have to do.

Yes, maybe we ought to see if we can find something a little further North next year, but something that the Southern members will still be able to attend

I'm very sorry to say that I really don't think I'll be making it this year.  I've got a very full dance card at the moment and yet another weekend where I leave my wife to deal with the daughter and the dog just wouldn't be fair.  I'm sure you'll all manage you have fun without me and I'll be right here looking forward to seeing the pics with the rest of MTO.

Sorry to hear this too. Meet you next year  :tu:

You should be ok, you have to get the mix perfect and it needs to be ignited with at least the temperature of burning magnesium for a sustained period. You wont do any harm. It doesn't explode it just burns at around 4000F. You'd end up with a big hole where the bin was lol

Are you still wanting to set off at stupid o'clock Kev?

What do you call stupid o'clock?   I was thinking to get to yours for 7am ish so by the time we get your gear packed, and accounting for pee stops, get there for between 12 and 1.

What do you think?

Well, you're looking about 3hrs in light traffic with a trailer from mine. Call it 4 hours with a bit of traffic and a piss stop before we leave the M1. If we leave mine at 7:15, we'll be there before Tony  :ahhh :ahhh I recon if you get to mine for 8, we'll still be there for lunch.

Tony, what time are you planning on getting there? If I give you a ring before we leave the M1 to find out where you're at, that'll be about 1.1/2hrs warning before we get there, in case you're still having your cornflakes at Chateau le Sparks.  :D :D

I didn't realise the incendiary brothers ( :P) were going to be getting there so early Kev. If you want to get a head start on the rush hour traffic, we can stick to 7-ish if you prefer. Just do me a favour and gimme a ring before you set off to make sure I've parted company with the duvet  :D  :salute:

The results of the shooting competition, which I had tried to make as fair as possible.

Kev - 8
Al - 9
Tony - 12
Michael (TaxiDad) - 14
Chris - 16
Luke - 19
Peter - 21
Mark (me) - 40

So I disqualified myself.I did say I'd tried to make it fair.

So with a Rough Rider high carbon - Peter

and in last place - Kev with The Ultimate Survival Flashblade Recharge Multi-tool 1.0 (possibly a close contender for the worst muilti next to that one piece bike tool thing)

Thank you all for making me feel so welcome. I had a great time, both fun and relaxing and it was great to put faces to names.

I'll definitely be attending the meets as regularly as I can.

Time for a brew then put the trailer away until I unpack it tomorrow, and car to unpack. Looking forward to seeing all the pics, I was enjoying myself so much I only took 2

I'll do better next year.

As suggested earlier, there was a bit of an incident Saturday morning. Smashie left to take his son home, but a few minutes later drove back onto the field and wound down his window with a bit of a half smile, and said the magic word ..... "Problem" .....

Everyone dropped what they were doing and went to select their weapon of choice from Sparky's bucket of axes, and trotted off to save the day

He couldn't get out. During the night, part of a tree had come down and was blocking the road. Nothing that a group of tea and coffee fueled middle aged men with a modest ( ) assortment of tools couldn't fix.

After applying a couple of coats of looking at, the guys started tormenting it with axes. Tofty challenged it to a duel and started fencing with it....

Once that branch was out of the way, Sparky got brutal with another ...

And the bloody thing still didn't fall down. Me and hiraethus went round the other side, and he gave it a bit of a nudge to dislodge the broken section that was caught up

A couple more coats of looking at were applied, and the lads got stuck in again.

To make it more fun, Smashie had strategically left the remote control for his winch at home  and so Kev and Michael (TaxiDad) rustled up some straps and hitched up the bough to the LandRover.

Problem solved!

As Luke said earlier, Mark had given him a Hultafors axe, and he mentioned that he needed a cover for it, so I got my leatherworking bits and bobs out so we could fix that.

I can't imagine how thrilled all of you were when you found out you'd been trapped there by a fallen tree- almost as if St. Choppy, Patron Saint of MTO had knocked that tree down in the night for your amusement!  Of course, if one is honest, it does look like the Landie would have made it underneath, as I'm assuming everyone else would have as well...  :pok:

But where's the fun in that?  As I was reading about it I'd wondered why you didn't just run the wings around it and haul it down- I suppose not having the controller for it is as good an answer as there's likely to be!

Once again, I am extremely envious of your meetup!  I'm glad you all had a great time, but it wasn't nice of you to pawn all of your extra stuff off on the newbie!  :D

To be fair Grant I did think of driving underneath, however where's the fun in that?  We had also been told that there was a kids football match and another event in the evening so rather than take the risk we dealt with it. Which earned the guys some free beer.

I know that if I had driven under it. It would have fallen on the bonnet, the only part not protected by the roll cage.

That was a great weekend, again. :)  Good to catch up with the regulars and meet some new faces.  Had loads of fun burning and chopping stuff, throwing sharp things, shooting other things, burning food, drinking too much and talking smurf.  Did a bit of wheeler-dealing with Kev and Taxi Dad :tu: and managed to not come away with too much of Tony's rust pile. :D

There was some talk of doing the next one somewhere else.  There's a farm campsite near Kimmeridge (not far from Lulworth) that I stayed at a few years ago that lets you have open fires, so I'll see if I can find their details.  It'd be nice to have one by the seaside. :)

Will they also allow axes, guns, swords, flamethrowers, chopping down trees and will it be big enough for Tonys 5 acre car boot sale?

Axes weren't even the only choice for removal! We could have just as easily set fire to it, (but time was of the essence due to the imminent arrival of a wedding party), karate chopped it, or blown it up.

I see what you did there.

My sunburnt forehead is peeling already.  That's what I get for forgetting my hat and not remembering I have an mto cap in my car till after I suppose.

Next year I'll make a list to check things off

Did anyone 'disappear' with an axe for about half an hour sometime before this happened?  :pok:

OR, it will be like that youtubes video where the bloke see's the lion he was friends with 5 years ago, and the lion recognises him and gives him a bear hug (which is a difficult thing for a lion to do). It will be heartwarming to watch. Maybe you could film it for the youtubes for me.

New vaporiser fitted and all new seals. All the black stuff cleaned off. It works a treat now and you should all remain safe if you happen to be anywhere near ground zero when I light it.
