Welcome back Paul.
It sounds like you need to change your keyboard settings in your control panel.
What version of Windows do you have?
-
Use Alt Gr instead of ctrl + alt

If the " and @ keys are the wrong way around, it's because your computer thinks you have a US keyboard, instead of a UK keyboard. You often find that the # is "swapped" with something else too.
I haven't used XP for a while, but I think if you go into Control Panel, there'll be an option something like "Regional and Language Options", and in there there'll be a tab named "Keyboards and Languages" or similar.
Make sure you have language and keyboard set to English (UK) - I'm guessing at the moment that it will be set to English (US).
I'd be more specific but I'm using Vista, and I actually have a US gaming keyboard, so use the US settings anyway!
Have a play around in there and I reckon you'll sort it out.

That's exactly what happened to the keyboard settings on my hospital ward - they were rather impressed that I knew how to change it back! (Nobody else did)
Just one of the those PITA things that puters like to do to you. Glad it's sorted Paul
