Title: SAK Mods
Post by: sak hiker on April 24, 2019, 10:07:43 PM
i'm looking at making my own custom SAK by using parts from other models but not sure if it can be done or not..... i know between the backers and liners it determines what tools are functional and i do have access to a machine shop so it shouldn't be a problem making mods. so here's what i'm looking for

combination tool from the walker which i think is the 84mm
awl from the alox family, ie farmer, pioneer ect. i believe the 93mm
scissors
pruning blade

possibly or if needed:
saw
large blade

if i can't have the combo tool from the walker than i'd just go with alox awl, scissors, pruning blade and either saw or another blade.

is this possible? would i have to open any holes up ect... any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. yes i know bob lessard does custom work but i can't justify putting that kinda money out for a SAK even though his work looks amazing!

I'm planning something similar, but with a Phillips added, and on 93mm springs. Are you looking to build a 91 or 93mm? That will affect how many need drilling out.

Probably 93 since I already have a harvester and pioneer , would just need the pioneer x for scissors

I wasn't sure if I could put an alox awl on the walker.....

If you want to do a 93mm build than you would need a combotool from a 91mm not the 84mm.  The 84mm one will sit to low, and you will have trouble accessing the nail nick.  You will also have to drill out the combotool to 3 mm if your using rivets.  If it was me I would do scissors on one layer and another layer bottle opener and pruner. Similar to this except swapping the e blade for the pruner blade (https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu-TRGehA6R/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=41eb2j4bnocx)https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu-TRGehA6R/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=41eb2j4bnocx (https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu-TRGehA6R/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=41eb2j4bnocx)

thanks,

curious would you be able to take the awl from the 93mm and put it on the 84mm?

I responded back too. wondering if you could take the awl from a 93mm and put it on the 84mm.

i was just thinking if i could take the awl from the 93mm and put on the 84mm then swap out saw for scissors.

is there a good way of measuring or telling what size an sak is? i have some old boyscout models as well. most have everything i want where i could possibly thin the layers down to just exactly what i want but i hate the awls on them, i prefer the awl on the 93mm for what i use it for

Here's the 93mm awl on my Mega84 mod.

Here's the 93mm awl on my Mega84 mod.

sweet! so it is possible! do you know if you could use a pruner blade instead of the large blade with the awl on the 84?

since my walker (lumberjack) is so small and light it would be awesome to just keep the combo tool, swap saw for scissors and add the awl and a blade

The best way to figure out the size at first is just to measure them.  93mm is alox only slightly larger than the celidor models.  84mm is 3.25 inches 91mm is 3.5 inches.  Once you do a few you can do it visually.  Between a farmer and a pioneer x you can add or remove the scissors and the saw.

Don't know. Might need a tang mod, and probably a spacer

So you want to make an 84mm model.  Scissors for the 84mm can be quite pricey, since they haven’t made them in many years(a golfer is usually around $60).  You may just want to get a compact and replace the combotool with the awl.

Gotcha,  just weighing out options..... what's a compact?

I'm not set between an 84 or 93, just trying to figure out what I can do with what I have vs what I may need to get.  I'm trying have it as supplement tool to my fix blade for hiking and trying to keep it light with only necessary tools.  May later do a EDC or woods bumming or carving version

If you're ok with wenger scissors then you might be interested in this mod. https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=41486.0 Wenger scissors would probably be easier and cheaper to get on ebay than victorinox 84mm ones.
