Title: 1950's Japanese Pocket Knife
Post by: MultiMat on June 10, 2009, 06:52:53 PM: I thought this pocket knife looked a little interesting so I had a go & got it for under $14.The ebay pictures were not very good & I was most surprised as too how small it was.

Scissors work quite well as nail clippers.Interesting little things.

The US seller sent me this info;
I bought it new around 1951 in a gift shop at "Boot Hill" in Dodge City, Kansas. I was 10 yrs old at the time. Hope you enjoy it. It was made in what was then called "Occuppied Japan".

Does anyone know if this sort of knife was based on a Swiss pocket knife from the same time period? The scales would they be bone or plastic?

I know there were a ton of them made and they were mainly produced in Occupied Japan and are fair at best in quality. Some actually LOOK real nice but the functionality is not that great. There were some Hobo versions made too. I might have an old photo of a Hobo version I used to have or maybe I still have it. Who knows. :think: My collection is disorganized at best and sloppy at worst. :-[

This is the Japanese made Hobo knife. Has Kaneaga on the tang stamp. Bone scales. Average quality. I have another almost just like yours, maybe a little rougher in shape.

cliosguy---------------This is a Hobo type knife that splits into 2 separate pieces as shown in the photos.

Well when I an ingrowing toenail, it swelled up and throbed a lot, so does that count? :D
