I had to vote Voyager Lite, even though I'm too cheap to buy one. Better to spend lots of aggregate money on lesser models, eh? ;)

That was an easy pick.  Deluxe tinker!

I voted Other just to be difficult and because the Angler is a fun knife. And because I fully expect the Huntsman to totally dominate this poll when people start voting for real.

What? No Wengers?

 :D

Well my favorite is the Wenger Forester. But the Tradesman and Nomad are also cool.

Also I'd recommend linking to SAKwiki as we non US folks get redirected to our local version of the Vic site (Swiss for me) and can't see what you linked to.

I checked the SAK wiki...

In the 91mm size, the only one I own is...

a SwissFlame!  :ahhh

(Although I think I have a beat up Huntsman in my donor boxes... ;))

I expect the Explorer to be a runaway winner here, followed by the Deluxe Tinker. Personally I voted for the Voyager Lite though. The clock and plus scales have more than made up for the shabbiness of the light on the few times I've carried it. The main reason I don't carry it more is that I carry several items per pocket, which will prob ruin the clock as well as flatten the torch batteries  ::)

Although I do have a Factory made horn scaled Huntsman and Wenger Deluxe Cigar Cutter that are quite nice too ...

The added bonus with this pic is I can wave my Coach Climber under Reinier's nose again  :P  :D

I voted huntsman. It handles most of my needs and the only plastic on it is the scales, if you choose normal ones that is.

Of the current selection I'd vote Mountaineer but I prefer the Forester over the Vic Huntsman.

BTW, what's a Fireman? A Huntsman with nylon scales or are there other differences too?

DeluxTinker got the vote because I end up carrying it more than the Explorer

It's a lock blade model. Has some kinda tactical dreams to it. ;)

Click on the link I placed for it in the first post, and it'll take you to Victorinox's page on it.

Explorer is the runaway winner so far. 'Tis a popular model, to be sure!

Ah, the 111mm one. I assumed you were talking about a 91mm model as all the other SAKs on the list were 91mm. Then you're missing quite a few crowd favorites like the Outrider or Locksmith.

Other...
My soon to be arriving Traveller Lite. :D Absolutely love those digi plus scales.

I stop at 2 layers for a daily carry SAK to be honest. (Compact/Timekeeper)
For big jobs I'd go with a 5 layer or more. I either want just enough or more than I need.

I voted Mountaineer, as the tool I would most like to add to my Climber is a file.  TBH, though, three layers is pretty much my limit for regular carry.

Another vote for the Explorer here, although I also considered the Mountaineer as I'm a fan of the file as well.

Huntsman, partly because it's an regular carry when outdoors; partly because of the wide variety of great handles.

I voted for the Explorer too. I like the Huntsman too for the saw, but since I modded my Explorer with the bit adapter it's proved it's superiority many times.

Chicks dig the guy with the Explorer Plus in his pocket.

It's funny you should mention that. Lemme tell you a story about that very topic.

When I went to visit my fiance for the first time, I had just bought a pocket hanger on the stop before hers. (I was in Taiwan for work, went to visit her in China "on the way home.") The Explorer is pretty chunky in the pocket. On a pocket hanger and appropriate length lanyard? Not at all chunky! But it looks even more dorky outwardly.

On our second day together, I wore it on the pocket hanger. She asked: "What's THAT!?" "A pocket hanger, so my Swiss Army Knife sits more comfortably in my pocket." "Oh, OK then." was all I got. Throughout that trip, I used that Explorer many times to help us out. Knife, scissors, Phillips, even the magnifier to help with a sliver. She gained a little respect for it, and even asked to use it a few times.

It's one of those things she came to expect of her guy.

So, as it turns out chicks DO dig an Explorer in the pocket.  :climber:

P.S. Coincidentally, ( ;) ) I also brought her a Victorinox Classic with Edelweiss scales from Taiwan. At first, she was charmed at my thoughtfulness. Now? She said she uses it all the time, which warms my dorky heart.

I agree that hanging the Explorer in the pocket from an appropriate length lanyard is the way to go. Carrying it like that, you feel no bulkiness.

I use a nylon key chain fob that came with a Tom Bihn backpack that I received as a gift over 10 years ago. It is a black key chain fob, and one end clips to my belt loop on my jeans and the other end is attached to the split ring on my Explorer. You can not see or notice it when in use because it is black and it is flat nylon. If anything it might look like a part of my pants. It's very low-key, and it's definitely not noticeably dorky.

Although some stuff might seem really cool to us SAK geeks, that same stuff probably appears significantly dorky to most of the opposite sex (or just non-SAK nuts).

I picked the Explorer as my stock 'Four Layer Favorite'. The Deluxe Tinker would be a close second. If I had or if I could get a Deluxe Camper, that would definitely beat out the Deluxe Tinker in favor of the corkscrew over the philips back side tool.

I voted for the explorer.  It has all the tools that I use most frequently while still being just about pocketable for me.  In truth though I would really like to get my hands on a scientist and that would be the model I would make if I ever get into this modding lark.  :sak:

I'm thinking about buying a swisscard lite just for the magnifying glass, for those times when I'm carrying a different SAK.  I use the magnifying glass all the time and I couldn't do without it now.  It's really handy for reading tiny writing like the embossed expiry dates on drug packets, and I also use it to check the edge when I'm sharpening knife blades.

the Huntsman is a close second, but pliers are more useful to me than a saw.

I have one and use it all the time. At around 2 ounces, it's not light, but it's made of metal/glass and pretty durable. Put a little dab of loktite on the screws and you'll be good to go.

But really surprised by the results.
Would not have expdected the Explorer to be so far ahead and thought that the Phillips brigade would push the Tinker higher!!

PS. Yes and what about the Wengers?? You are all too Viccy biased!!

 :ahhh
I repeat,  :ahhh  :D

My inability to answer this question (torn between the Huntman, the Mountaineer and the Deluxe Climber) lead me to buying a Vic Ranger (main user at home) and a Handyman (my bag EDC).

Since I had to vote for one, I went with the Huntsman. The metal file on the Mountaineer offers much greater versatility, I know. I find that both these SAKs have a perfect size for me to handle comfortably. Still, it had to be the Huntsman for me, don't ask me why.

Even if it weren't discontinued, I think I'd pass on the D.Climber -too thick and limited uses of those pliers for me.
I'm a little surprised to see this current lifting the Explorer so high.  :tool:

From the SAKWiki list, I would probably choose the Swiss Bianco CyberYeoman but that's not stock. The two tools I need the most are PH0/1 driver (and not as back layer tool) and metal file. None of the 4 layer tools combines the two.

This thread is a bit older, so when I voted for Voyager Lite I actually meant Traveller Lite. Since we got us a dog and I need to go out with him at night, often in a hurry, I really started appreciating the Lite module. I now therefore carry either the CT Lite, the Huntsman Lite or the Traveller Lite in my trousers pocket. Given that our puppy has a tendency of going for my wrissmurfch, I have started to leave it off and use the Traveller's watch instead.

Mine was the fieldmaster, but since I really like the alox world and it has grown since this was originally posted my edc knife is the FarmerX which is four layers, and ever since I got it for Xmas I haven’t carried anything else! Even had a special pancake sheath made for it, tilted and even holds the steel!

The inline Phillips is great.
And the mag glass is so useful - as the years go by - and eyesight deteriorates

PS. I bought my Explorer on my way to the UK MT.o camping meet 2018 - So it has added significance for me!!

Oddly I never quite got the Explorer.  I have one, I certainly don't hate it, but I never felt the love.  Each to their own I guess.  ;)

Huntsman is still my top four layer with the Grand Prix a very close second.

Just voted Mountaineer, while Explorer is a very close second to me.

I would say Explorer covers 95% of what I really need and use, but that 5% of time when I need a metal saw/file, I really do need it bad.  So Mountaineer for me.

I voted Other.  I would have said Deluxe Tinker years ago but I realized a saw would be more helpful day to day and in an outdoor situation.  I agree with the MadPlumbarian that the Farmer X would be my new choice over the Huntsman mainly because if I carry a 4 layer SAK it is going to be for the Outdoors primarily and I want the added durability.  If I need the scale tools I will carry a Classic SD as well.
Title: Re: Which is your stock "Four Layer Favorite"
Post by: Deere Man on July 06, 2021, 07:31:04 PM
I voted Deluxe Tinker, because it's the only one on the list that I actually own.  I have to admit I don't use it much though.  Those pliers add a lot of  size and weight to the Tinker and I just don't use them much. I bought it to compliment my SwissTool and make up for the large blunt plier head, but I find that I don't carry the DT or the ST much, in favor of smaller, lighter tools.  I keep the DT on my dresser and those small pliers come in mighty handy for making repairs to kids toys and jewelry.

I sure see the attraction of the Explorer, and I'd like to try one someday, but I always have a plier-based MT on me.  They all have a good Phillips, so an inline Phillips isn't a big deal for me on a SAK.  I actually like the back spring Phillips. Mostly because I don't like the corkscrew, even with the mini driver.

I like the Deluxe Tinker pliers, so it's my most carried 4 layer (followed by a Huntsman).

The item I least want in a 4 layer, or really any knife, is the magnifying glass.  I already have magnifying lenses in metal frames in front of my eyes, so there's no need for one in a knife.

I think you'll find that many folks such as myself enjoy that layer for the in-line phillips, which I find is much more useful than the back-spring phillips.  Not only is it much less awkward to use, it fits in tighter spaces and properly fits a wider range of screw sizes.  To me, that phillips is worth an extra layer on its own, even if the magnifier wasn't paired with it.  Those that like that layer just for the phillips could also opt for the bit driver as well, but it is a considerably thicker layer.

Of course I realize that people have varying needs, and many likely don't turn as many phillips screws as I do.

I've seen one Deluxe Climber for sale on eBay in the last few months. And it had a bent corkscrew.

I was looking for one myself. They do seem rare.

Your eyeglasses have 8x magnification lenses, like the mag glass on my Explorer? Impressive!

I'll add that the square shaft of the inline Phillips fits a hex bit coupler I have almost perfectly, allowing me to use my SAKs with any 1/4 inch hex bit or socket. No funky-sized bits like with the CyberTools.

Hi Everyone:

I'm carrying an Explorer in my pocket since I recived one as a gift from my wife in 1999. Unfortunately, it was confiscated in a security control in Paris in 2015.
Therefore I'm 6 years with a new one (6x glass lens)

That's great.... but as far as using hex bit adapters, i'd rather use the bottle opener with it. It fits perfectly and you can use it with any Sak that has a bottle opener, and not restrict yourself to one model...

that fit conveniently in my coin pouch, along with coins and keys...

EDIT: Just a side note regarding the Explorer, even if i like the model, i just can't bring myself to justify carrying a 4 layer Sak with a thick layer for an inline philips when i have other more diverse options to have inline philips and other SD types if i need to, the mag glass is irrelevant to me. For that kind of bulk the DT makes a hell of a lot more sense since it gives me the pliers, a functionality unavailable on the other models  ;)

Loving this necro thread and discussion

There's something about those four layer SAKs!!    :tu:

Thanks for sharing your kit, MacGyver. I like the small case and the coin pouch.

I've heard of other people using 1/4 inch drive adapters on the bottle opener.

The hex bit coupler I have came with a Gerber/Winchester multi-tool and is smaller than a 1/4 inch drive. It doesn't fit on the bottle opener, but fits well on the inline Phillips and is magnetized so it "sticks" to the inline Phillips and holds in the bits.

Added bonus - it fits pretty well on the combo tool on my Mini Champ if I need to get into tight spaces.   :tu:

My main daily SAKs are Explorer and Swiss Champ, both with inline Phillips, so I'm set!

Nice!  :salute:

I used to wonder about the tiny field of view from the SAK mag glasses, but then I heard a tip about holding the mag glass up to your eye like a jeweler's loupe and bringing the object you want to examine up to it.

Doesn't work in all circumstances (like looking at scary bugs), but definitely lets me get more usefulness from it.

Never heard that, so I had to try it out.  With my glasses on, it's a no go.  Glasses off, I can make it work.  However, the best view was glasses on, both mag and viewed item held at chest level.   :tu:

Deluxe tinker for me but i also own explorer and mountaineer. deluxe tinker the pliers are quite handy and compliments a swiss tool or spirit with its bigger scissors and a mountaineer compliments a swiss tool RS since it donst have a file. I just wish they had a semi custom platform, i would have an explorer with pliers and no corkscrew in a nano blink.

Keeping in mind that the FarmerX wasn't around when this poll was made, as that'd be my current favourite...

I can't decide between Deluxe Tinker and Explorer.

I'd say the Explorer is more "lovable" -- it's among the best EDCs and the mag glass is more useful to me than I give it credit for. Feels perfect in-hand and one of my favourite looking. It's also one of the few that can come stock with plus scales/tools.

The Deluxe Tinker is such a complete package and I love the pliers. I must admit that I actually don't own one  :ahhh ... I have a CyberTool 34/M which is very similar, and I can't think of a situation where I'd choose the DT over the CT34. But given that my CT has high sentimental value, perhaps a DT is in order for situations where it could be lost more easily...

The Explorer deserves all the accolades it gets.  I used one for many years before I found out a Yeoman is basically the same, with one less layer.  Now I carry a Yeoman.  But if it's 4 layers, stock, I will still choose the Explorer.

:Agree:  Stock 4-layer has been the Farmer X since it came out.

:Agree:  I liked the Explorer, but absolutely love the Yeoman.  The one layer decrease makes it even nicer for carry.

I voted fieldmaster, but that's kind of like asking which kid is my favorite.
Fieldmaster is the best sometimes, or maybe explorer. Then sometimes I grab the huntsman. This is why I end up standing in front of the dresser looking at knives for 30 minutes every morning!
