What do you think about scratches and similar things on your SAKs?
It's almost one and a half year in which I EDC my XLT. It was new when I got it. Now... Not so more. It has scratches on the main blade, a used look on the bottle opener, lost some of the teeth in the pliers, got some dings on the bit driver and the saw is definitively used now, too.
As I have some spare XLTs here that's not really a problem. The more I use it the more character it gets.
How about your SAKs?

Interesting topic. Here are my thoughts.
I prefer mint condition in original box, but that is not always possible especially when buying older or vintage SAKs, so ultimately, I don't mind character marks when the knife is vintage.
I don't mind character marks when I am the original owner and put the wear on it.
When I buy something somewhat modern and it has wear on the scales, I sometimes change out the scales.

and when you use the tools they can get scratches
My SwissChamp is covered in scratches/ marks
As it has been used for over 24 years
And everything still works as it supposed to :tu:

I don't mind scratches, dents, abrasions, etc.
What I am fairly squeamish about is grime on the inside of transparent scales. Especially if it's bits of tobacco, hair, random gatherings of bacteria etc.

:iagree: It is a tool and that is the way i use it. If it breaks, i get a new one.

If you use something, eventually it will get scratched, dented or whatever.
If you have something that is completely new or in mint condition, the first scratch hurts the most. But every next sign of wear that appears will be easier to bear, until the point where the wear is really taking over the whole appearance and "feel" of the tool, and even starts to become the defining element of that tool, and then and only then you start to actually feeling really proud of the fact that it looks so worn!
Because from that point on, the tool has become a part of you, something that you know exactly how it feels when you hold it, you know exactly where the dents and scratches are, some of them may even have a whole story to tell, and you can even imagine exactly how it feels in your hands even when you're not having it with you at all.
Of course i'm generally referring to tools here, because (for me) this is not only true for SAKs but for any other (multi)tool or (pocket) knife as well.

I generally have shelf queens that I keep pristine, and working tools that will get scuffed up.

:climber: If I'm going to go to the trouble to lug a SAK or Multitool around then I can assure you I will not hesitate to put it to good use! And by that I mean proper use / not abuse. Character defines my gear with every nick, ding or scratch :tu:

Most of what I get is previously owned. Many things show some wear and a few show little to none. I used to get bothered when I scratched up my tools but this feeling went away when I saw how lovely they begin to look with use. All that honest wear is appealing to my eye. Especially leather sheaths and pocket worn scales. Blades that have scratches from usage are very appealing to my eye. Patina earned from honest use is very attractive.

I really like Bronn as a character, because he's not the kind you'd expect to have such screentime, given the context and competition others offer.
No, I am kidding. I like the wear on my used tools. I don't mind it. They're doing what I want them to. I do have shelf queens, though not on a shelf. :think: So I do not want those to get scratched. But on my users, no worries.

Users I don't mind scratching the implements, scales can always be switched out, non user queens I think nobody likes marks on. What I don't like is chipping on flashlight anodizing, they chip quite easily from short falls and all my lights get used or have been used many times so I don't really have flashlight shelf queens.
